I'm running Phoenix Unleashed on my Captivate and love it, and while the Gingerbread keyboard is fine, I really miss the predictive text and the functionality of the old Samsung keyboard from Froyo.
Does anyone either know the where I can get the app or the .apk so I can pull it from another source?
I discovered that AxT9IME.apk was what I was looking for, so I uploaded it to my phone. However, it won't install. Can anyone think of a reason why the app won't install or how I can install it? (Before you ask, I have selected the option to allow my phone to install unknown apps.)

Keyboards are system apps, you don't install. Put the apk into the /system/app folder using ADB or root explorer. You may or may not have to reboot to get it to show.

If that doesn't work there might be a lib file in /system/lib for the predictive text dictionary also. All I use is swype and thats how it is with that idk about this one for sure though.
I tried both loading the app and lib files. I tried copying them into the rom file and loading the rom, which failed.
I'm just running a different rom. Life as we know it did not cease.

I have the AT&T Galaxy Tab SGH-I987 rooted but I still can't figure out how to install non market apps. I've looked all over youtube, google and even here. Can anyone help me? I know it's more simple than what I'm making it out to be...
just download the apk (or download from PC and put in the sdcard).
Then use a file explorer like root explorer or ES File Explorer and click on it.
Also remember to check Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources. You probably did, but no harm in making sure.

The AT&T version does not have this setting... Apparently they blocked it. When I try to install from SD card it will not allow... Is there anyway around this without rooting?
Use installer apps like File browsers, Back up and restore apps etc..

To uninstall them you need to be rooted and have a file manager like as file manager.
Otherwise you can disable them in app settings.
Out of curiosity, I see you've been a member since 2008 and have well over a thousand posts so your not a "noob." Yet, uninstalling system apps is a pretty basic question... Is this your first Android phone?
No its not, I usually run custom ROMs. And when I install them usually there are no system apps like this. This is honestly the first phone that I have been damn near 100% happy with stock. Its weird haha
yeha I just went thru and deleted the APKs using RootExplorer.

I'm finding myself in the same situation, not really used to stock but now liking it enough to stick with it!
Just to clarify for the less forward-thinking among us, if you're rooted but on stock android and don't want to re-flash everything should you decide you want those deleted system apps back, it's better to rename them (for instance change crappyapp.apk to crappyapp.apk.bak) than to delete them, so you can just remove the .bak and restore the app instead of having to hunt down the .apk and re-install.
Or just freeze it in Titanium Backup, which is the easiest way. No reason to NOT have Ti Backup installed in my opinion...

My intuition tells me these can't simply be uninstalled in the apps manager, so how does one do a complete uninstallation of an application that was originally installed by flashing its zip? (I suppose my example applications pertain specifically to 4.4.2 based AOSP ROMs but I figured this might be a generalized process)
Well if you can't uninstall it through conventional ways then delete the apk file using a root file explorer.

And what's the path for the root APKs?
Make a back up first and restore it or pick through the installer zip to see what it's installing (the paths will match) and delete the changes. Some installers do more then just drop an apk though.

Yeah I know making and restoring a backup is always an option but I was trying to see if there was an easier, less resource demanding way of doing it. Unfortunately, you're probably right in saying forensically picking through the installer zip is the only way to know where all the installed parts of the application lie. I really wish when people posted these installation zips that they'd also post a backout procedure but you practically never see it. What's with that?

You uninstall them by using Titanium backup. Just long press whatever the app is.

Not every zip is installing an apk, some make file changes, etc also...
Hello, I bought my Nexus 6 from Amazon (US version) unlocked. I joined Project Fi which requires installation of the Project Fi app. Now I am leaving Project Fi going back to Verizon but I cannot remove the Project Fi app. I'm only able to uninstall all updates, and disable the app. Clearing the cache, disabling the app with SIM removed, rebooting with no SIM, etc. Nothing removes it. I also tried to remove it via the Play Store by holding on it and removing it with the X at the upper right. Well there is no way to select it in the play store, it can only be "enabled".
Project Fi support is of course useless. I know this app did not come on my phone unless it was hidden in a system partition until activation?
Any ideas on how to remove this app totally? I want to get it removed so I can get back on Verizon without it causing issues trying to interact with the SIM. Thank you

sure, its very easy, but you need root to remove it, since its a system app. just use a root file explorer to find it in /system/app/, then delete it and reboot. when you boot up, it'll be gone. or, you can perform a factory reset, then boot up first time with your Verizon sim in the phone. then the app will go back into hiding in your system partition.

which will wipe the device. I can then use any root file explorer app to delete the system/app/folder

well.. yes and no. root has slightly changed since 6.0.1. and i mean slightly.
1. unlock your bootloader(which will wipe your device, so move what you need to your computer). boot up once after this as well.
2. flash the twrp recovery to your phone via fastboot.
3. flash any nexus 6 custom kernel with twrp(new step)
4. flash the latest SuperSU zip(for root)
5. reboot.
the custom kernel will let you obtain root, its needed in there as of 6.0.1. oh, then don't delete the /system/app/ folder, delete the google fi app folder with its apk inside. otherwise you'll delete all your system apps.

Ok. So do I still obtain root with the fastboot procedure linked in the FAQ? If not, can you link to a current guide for unlocking the bootloader and flashing the TWRP. I'm also not sure where to get a custom kernal, or which one. After that I think I got it. Thanks.

you can always check if you have root by downloading and installing a terminal emulator app from the play store, then open it and type su. if you have root, it'll return a #

I don't have root, I've never touched this phone. I'm just trying to make sure I understand the correct way to obtain root in 6.0.1. Your post made it sound like maybe that guide I linked wasn't the current way?

no, it is the correct way. I just added that a kernel has to be flashed as well. but chainfire might have fixed that, I heard that a few hours ago. if he did, then the method is correct. I rooted over a year ago, my n6. so its been a while :angel:
I understand. Thank you for making that clear. I can't even root due to USB driver issues...not sure why. I followed the steps exactly.
I've switched to SuperSU 2.66, so I've just checked it, and you don't need a custom kernel for it anymore, just flash ir frim TWRP.

So I unlocked, and rooted with Wugster and SUperSU. I booted first time with my Verizon SIM and project Fi app is still there. I can see it in my apps list, but i can't see it in the system/app/ any clue where it is? thanks.
It's in #/data/user/0/com.google.android.apps.tycho

it has a weird name, not fi. its like tycho or something similar. if you look into that folder, its there.

ok looking in that folder, i see nothing in any subfolder except for a file called "Switching.xml"
Should I delete the whole tycho folder?
The ProjectFi app is "Tycho"
You can also remove GCS (Google Connectivity Services). Only ProjectFi uses it for joining open wifi networks and the Google VPN, among other things. Totally useless unless you're a Fi'er.

You can delete it but I would recommend either Disabling it in Settings > Apps or using Titanium Backup to freeze it. Assuming you're running stock, mounting system rw will cause issues with verity
