Well i was in development today for trying to find a way to root the latest firmware from LG that locks out a lot of the phone for flashers like me who dont use VZW service ne ways i have officially achieved root on VS910ZV8 and VS910V9 without having to downgrade it. Basically I used the LG Esteem Exploit found by djrbliss the link to his blog about the esteem and the zip is attached just execute run.bat and after a few reboots enjoy root without all the extra time and effort of downgrading
http://vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/15/re-rooting-the-lg-esteem/
Anyone try this yet?
Nope but I just spent an hour downgrading then re-rooting then upgrading again lol! I just saw this when I refreshed the page to get Broken out. Thanks for finding this though!! I'm sure it will help a lot of people!
I did
I actually did that monday when i recieved my replacment...didnt know there was issues rooting still..iv only used that one to root sence it was posted..work'd with 0 issues for me..was teathering again in no time
Yes this works fine.
may be a dumb question, but if you root with this and leave the stock recovery on, how would you go about unrooting without flashing a .tot and removing all traces of root?
i have always used mt's unroot .bat to unroot

From what I read in the .bat all it is doing it pushing the busybox file, the su file and the superuser.apk. So essentially, all you would have to do is delete those 3 files and you should be unrooted If I'm correct.

idk if it will be that easy, it added a ton of stuff into /system/xbin
but i can confirm that i am successfully rooted!

Have you tried the autorun from the phone that has the driver install included with it or look in the system folder and pull the iso and unrar it to get the exe to run
anybody able to cwm on after using this method? how'd you do it?
Polly could do the flash_image process and rename recovery from boot.p in the file system

If you don't have those options on the phone and computer can't communicate I made that mistake when i first got my phone too.

I made this thread in order to discuss possibilities of how to root the latest software for our phone. It's about v20N mainly. Let's try to keep this one clean and root our phone
You can already find a procedure for V20B here: Root V20b
FIND ROOT FOR V20n HERE Root V20N
Methods tried and fail:
http://www.unlockroot.com/? not clear yet...
unlockroot (not clear yet...)
Gingerbreak different Versions
SuperOneClick 2.3.3
Blackjack 1.2.0
adb push wont work for me at least...
SoC
z4root
vipermod
thrill
doomlord all version
androidnerds.net/2011/10/08/lg-esteem-oneclickroot-now-ready/
Gingersnap Root Itility tells me it succeeded, but root still aint present...
adding that ratc exploit
Working so far:
adb install *.apk
According to Redpik: "Superoneclick 2.3.3 was able to copy busybox into /system/tmp but couldn't find the glitch."
Local rooting, since some apps like rootchecker show our phone is rooted
As it seems, Unlockroot also works for some with v20n, maybe even others, if they disable the LGE Modem.
I somehow managed to root it by aproxymately doing this:
Enable debugging mode
Disable LGE Modem
Plug in USB cable
open UnlockRoot
click root
REBOOT and DONE!
Code:
-edited-, cause it didnt work with the method posted before.
Kill adb server
Starting adb server...
Get online devices
Try LGE shell rooting...
push file to device : rootutility
chmod file 755 rootutility
Restarting debug mode...
Waiting for debug mode...
push file to device : busybox
push file to device : su
chmod file 755 busybox
push file to device : Superuser.apk
Rooting, please wait...
Root Succeed!
Root finished!
Noone could reproduce the root till now, but I'll keep on trying.
It somehow worked and I made a nandroid of this. Link below...
How to flash it:
1. unzip the file
2. Take the whole folder and put it on ur SD card under sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
3. You need a rooted phone where you can access recovery by either using a app like RomManager or by adb shell via: adb reboot recovery (thnx to gabwerkz, since I didnt know)
4. reboot to recovery either via command or APP
5. choose backup and restore
6. choose restore
7. choose the foldername u just put onto ur SD card
alternatively (PRO USERS ONLY)
go till step 5
and then choose whatever you wanna have
Thats it so far. Maybe a MOD can take this thread and moderate it, since I hardly have time (but if possible also gimme right to edit it).
You also will find the solution in this post, as soon as any1 made it
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seems like I made it
here is the link to a complete NANDROID BACKUP

ITS rooted V20N GB software for p970.
THIS IS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP! UNPACK IT AND FOLLOW GUIDE ABOVE!
IF you want a flashable zip, pls go to Redy's thread, he repacked and added some tweaks

Big thanks to Redy!!
Or use Zeus ROM by huexxx: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454274
DO A FACTORY RESET AFTER FLASHING, WILL FIX SOME PROBLEMS!
Mick2K suggested me to post, that you should install busybox after the procedure and update su binaries, so that everything works fine.

This may be a long shot as I am not sure how the exploits work but...
It seems one issue is with not be able to set read/write to the systems folder.
I have been unable to mount the systems folder as writable. I think this is where the fundamental issues seem to be.
Superoneclick 2.3.3 was able to copy busybox into /system/tmp but couldn't find the glitch.

Thinkpad root has been achieved and released by djrbliss who we all know and love. If you were part of the bounty, please visit his page and thank him with your pledge.
The details are best left in his words, so get the exploit from here: http://vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/01/22/rooting-the-thinkpad-tablet/
Thanks JCase for being so quick with the recovery for the tablet. Get your recovery image and directions in this thread:

I have a Prime and my wife has the ThinkPad. I would say that between the two, the ThinkPad can take the beating for sure and I'm definitely jealous of the stylus, however I would love to keep what I have and just add the stylus ability. Either way, I would definitely agree that the ThinkPad is still a kick-ass tablet.
Congrats on the root all.

working for me on my 1839 USA TPT. doing my first titanium backup right now! hopefully we start seeing work on roms, or is the bootloader still locked?
Not sure but it appears that you can't have your tablet encrypted and get root. Mine is encrypted and during the process it just hangs after the first time you press a key to continue. Tried several times and at one point gave it an hour but nothing.
That being said, I did a factory default and was able to get root no problem. I was also able to encrypt it again after and I still have root. My tablet finally has full potential.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!
I removed basically all of the Lenovo apps by brute force and other than having to reboot the tablet twice due to some force close loops that occurred when deleting certain apps, everything went fine.

Did you manage to fix everything? I can send you my unedited SystemUI.apk if you would like so that you can replace your broken one.
This tool is based on the original D4 Utility with additions and rewrites by me. Doing any of this is at your own risk.
08/14 Tool Version now 2.0 !!! THE JUMP TOOL IS DEAD!!! No reason for this now that we have ICS Fastboot files.
08/31 Tool Version now 2.1 Here's what's new
10/25 Tool Version 2.2 corrected minor script error and updated to safestrap 3.05
1. Set of instruction included within the tool. Once you open the tool select menu 1 to display them. This is a .txt file so you must have some reader (I use notepad++).
2. Safestrap 3.05 (Thanks Hashcode)
3. Latest Superuser (3.1.3) and binary (3.1.1)
4. Restore to 6.16.217 ICS or upgrade a GB phone to 6.16.217 ICS with option to save or erase data
5. Unroot script - This will remove superuser, the su binary and busybox. However if you boot into recovery it will still indicate root or at least past root (qe display in recovery). Even a fastboot with data wipe will not reset this.
Where to download: http://d-h.st/users/jsnweitzel
Add the ICS fastboot file to the lite tool to run menu 11 or 12. Get it here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/cdma_maserati/list.php Then unzip it and add the files to the "files" folder of the tool.
If you have trouble connecting your phone be sure you have the latest drivers installed from moto:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_detail/a_id/78460/p/30,6720,8302
Use this tool at your own risk.
Can't wait to try this to go from .213 to .215! Will let you know my results. Right now, there are too many bugs in .213 for me to use it on a daily basis, hope .215 is better!
Edit: nevermind, d-h.st is back up again!
Edit 2: update went very smoothly, thanks!
Edit 3: fixed my issues with a data wipe - almost got bricked, but your tool saved me again! Now I'm back in action with .215 and having the best phone experience ever. If I could hit 'thanks' multiple times, I would!
Works just fine! Thank you very much!
..
Works great!!! Thanks
I just pushed this to my phone and now it is running soo much better (mostly due to the new build of the ICS leak) I was missing a home button and the lock screen, but so far not seeing too many bugs and I have root again. Brilliant! Cheers!
Just giving post a bump, updated tool.

Thanks for the heads up. Fixed the link.
So let's see I'm reading this correctly.
I installed the 217 leak file today (got tired of waiting for the ota soak test) and lost root.
To get it back I just need the lite version linked above, is that correct?

It look like the install of busybox and superuser were skipped (failed is probably more accurate) for some reason. Did you have the phone set to "MTP" or "PTP" mode. You don't want to run it in mass storage.

I have only seen an issue with the mass storage mode. Check in the tool files folder and be sure that a copy of Superuser.apk is there. If it still doesn't work I can't see why. As a last resort you could try installing it from the market.

Thanks for the help, the superuser is there in the files folder.
I'm debating if I should try it from the market or just try fastbooting the phone and see what happens.
I only want to root to get rid of the bloat, not sure if I'll install custom roms or not yet on this one.
You can "disable" some apps without root. Looking under settings and apps. Select one and hit disable. For some you will have to uninstall updates first.

I'll look into that.
I'm going to try downloading the full tool and try that, I was just using the lite version. It shouldn't make a difference but I figure it doesn't hurt to try it. If that fails I'll try to decide what my next step will be.
I tried to install superuser from the market but it wouldn't let me.
just get the one on the market and update the binary and it should work fine.. tib wiil fix the perms when you run it the first time. tried it b4 and it works fine

Are you talking about the superuser app from the market? I tried to get it and it wouldn't let me install it, claims it's already installed but it doesn't show up in my app drawer.
---------- Post added at 11:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 AM ----------
I GOT IT!!!!!!!!
I had an idea based on the comment about getting from the market so I tried the idea and it worked.
I copied the superuser apk file over to my sd card, I installed it from there and said to go ahead and replace the file that was there. I opened it directly after the install and updated the binarys (said it was current but did it anyway) now my root apps ask for and get super user permission.
So it looks like I'm up and running.
Thanks,
Brent.

No go my friend.
This method is for the Droid Razr ICS 4.0.4 and does not work on Atrix HD you will get permission denied when trying to move Batch from /data/local/12m or when trying to move any file like su to the directory.

No mkdir failed for tmp, failed /data/local permission denied. Still no go not sure how to get permissions for the /data/local folder.
Do I just replace the files from that new folder in ICS ROOT from the first one too test?
And where can I find the drivers? I donwloaded it from motorola but I am still not able to detect my device.
I am running VMWare on my macbook pro and made sure sub connects to that.

I found the drivers at Motorola dot com and queried on USB Drivers and found the Motorola Device Manager.
I can't post links just yet.

We are getting though! I Believe in you:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
Seems we need to figure out how to access /data/local directory this is where the problems lies with permission's. I have been trying for a day on and off due to work and have had no success so far. I will continue to help as much as I can.

I am not trying the auto script, I am working on finding the exploit to allow the proper setup for rooting and permissions is our issue right now.
Try a new cable or rebooting your computer and see if it sees your phone then.

1. use flash tool - click PADLOCK icon
or
2. use x8toolbox

how do i install
X8_drivers??
turn on usb debugging then use superoneclick, try newer version...if u'r using newer then use 2.1.1..it worked for me.....have u installed gordon't gate drivers?
if superoneclick 2.1.1 not working then install gordon gate drivers then use flashtool for root

no need for flash mode with x8toolbox, you just connect it without doing anything, with usb debuging on
