Need help with installing a custom rom.

Please help!!! I have searched and searched and searched the forums and have come across so many threads on how to add a custom rom to your Captivate.
To start, what I have been trying to do is add a custom rom after upgrading my phone from ver 2.2 to 2.3.3 GB. Some posts say you can just upgrade with the 2.3 on the phone, other posts say you need to take the phone back to the stock 2.1 rom. Then you find posts that say, make sure you have the stock bootloaders and kernals when you downgrade to the stock 2.1.
You can easily see how even a somewhat above novice can get confussed. To take my phone back to 2.1 I have followed posts that say use Odin 1.3. I have used odin before so no big deal. However in this case again you are getting different opionions and versions on this. Some have just the odin .exe and others have the .exe and the MD5 and .ini it the package. I am assuming that the one with just the .exe has everything built in as the size is quite big.
I have tried both ways and after I "Flash" it will not finish with the normal recovery mode and see the linux script. It will go to the ATT window and just keep rebooting over and over. I then will use my JIG and get back in download mode in order to reflash back to 2.3.3 just to get the phone to work again.
Can someone please give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong or direct me to the proper files and maybe some better step by step instructions.

Firmware: 2.3.3
Baseband: I897UCKF1

Build: GIGERBREAD.UCKF1

^ From the looks of what u posted, it looks like u have the leaked i897uckf1 currently on ur phone. If that is the case, then u could Odin the Cognition Beta 2 Kernel and then flash the latest Cog Rom (having already copied it to ur internal sd).
Just flash the kernel through Odin then use button combo (volume +/- and power...release after u see the at&t screen) to get into CWM 4.0.0.5 and flash Cog 5 v 1.00 from there.

Are you plugging into a usb port in the back of your pc? Also, there are several methods for flashing back to stock now, once you upgrade to GB bootloaders you don’t ever want to use the Odin with the button fix because it will only flash the secondary bootloader and the primary bootloader will remain GB and the result will be a hardbrick. Also, some of the newer builds came with Froyo installed and using the older 1 click Odin by DesignGears will put those devices in a bootloop. So it really is dependent on your device and your needs. I now use the method outlined in the Continuum 6.1 thread which will not touch the bootloaders and brings you safely back to 2.1 stock. I always clear user data and cache in recovery, flash back to stock using Cezar's method (not a 1 click) prior to flashing a new Rom. Most devs recommend flashing to stock first because there is less chance of corruption.

Listen, I'm new at this and learned watchin mobiletech videos from youtube. At first I found it hard but now is pretty easy (in my opinion). The first thin I do is back up apps with titanium and paste to my laptop (for me is faster to install them back), go back to stock 2.2, master reset using dialer (no odin), root, reboot, install rom on sd card, using odin i install bootloaders (I9000), flash talon kernel (odin), flash rom (CWM) and reboot. That's how I do it. Now, I could b wrong but doing it that way, in that pattern works for me. Like I said, I'm new at this but trust me....I've done it several times and it works for me. Keep reading and then decide how you want to do it. Good luck..."HONESTLY"!!!

I'm new to all of this and have done a good amount of research but seems like the information never ends and there are a few ways to load a custom rom.
Method one
BACK UP!!!
Flash to stock (FTS)
Wait for your phone to reboot and then re-enable debugging
Hook phone back up to pc and Master Clear (MC) using Odin
Load Clockwork update.zip (DOWNLOAD)
Load FireFly_X-X.zip to phone memory
Remove sim and external SD, and unplug USB
Boot into recovery and reinstall packages (You may have to reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork recovery)
Once in Clockwork recovery (Green Text), select install zip from SDcard
Next select choose zip from sdcard
Scroll down to FireFly_X-X.zip and select the file
This will run the script and install the ROM to your phone
After this is done, select go back and then select reboot phone
This may take a while, so leave your phone and go grab a snack!
Method 2
Load ROM file onto phone
Boot into recovery
Select ROM and flash it
Reboot, wait and enjoy
Wash, rinse, repeat!
What are the differences? Which one is better?
Seems like the first video is very simple and straight forward?
Am I missing something here? I'm already rooted and used titanium backup.
I'm on 2.2 Froyo and wanting to flash to Firefly 3.0

[Q] Bell Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000M firmware upgrade question

Greetings from a droid noob,
I have been trying to update my Galaxy Tab GT-P1000M using KIES, but KIES keeps telling me that I cannot update using KIES. I am very frustrated by this. It might be because the Tab I have used to be a display model used in stores. There is a continual demo screensaver that I can't disable either. It might be that there is something custom about it from Samsung/Bell for this functionality. I have never rooted the tab.
I then downloaded P1000MUGKF6_P1000MBMCKF6_BMC.ZIP from Bell to try to update to Gingerbread using Odin. This is where I get confused.
I have made many searches and there appear to be just a many versions of Odin as there are guides for the various phones out there. The instructions do not seem to follow the same pattern. Some say uncheck partition, some say leave it checked. Some use a PIT file, some don't. I really don't want to brick it.
I would really appreciate any help I can get on this. Step by step instructions would be especially helpful.

Follow the picture step by step.
Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Stop there and you will have Gingerbread JQ1
You can continue with the rest, and you will get Overcome 4.1 and you won't regret.
From there you can then try AOKP or CM9, all requires you to have Overcome Kernel with its CWM recovery to flash.

Thanks, priyana. I have actually seen that guide before. However, I am not trying to root. I am just trying to either go back to the "stock" FROYO and get rid of the KIES trouble or update to Gingerbread using ODIN.

Not trying to root.
Read the guide images, it is exactly doing what you want. : flashing GB using ODIN.
BTW, no harm using the guide to apply your version of fimmware too.
Just use it as a guide for ODIN, what to put in what fields, what to tick, etc..
Also, it is good to hop on to GB stock safe first because that will get rid of bad bootloader, since some Froyo has locked bootloader.

Here is a step directly from the Guide section titled Preppin’ The System…
[REQUIRED FOR FROYO-BASED TABS ONLY:] Your Tab must be rooted.

Followed the pictures but I think I now have a brick.
My tab did not reboot itself as in the instructions. Instead it stayed in download mode. I rebooted manually...got the new start up sound and then got to the Samsung screen. It has been stuck on that for 10 minutes now.

Not sure if this is a good thing but I just saw the Samsung logo flicker.

Hmm.. did you get all steps passed in ODIN?
No harm redoing it again, but make sure you follow every steps (i.e. parts that let it reboot itself, etc)
Edit: I missed that bit that you said it did not boot itself.
I think it is essential, could it be that you didn't wait long enough?
The good thing is I think you can reach download mode, meaning you have not screwed up the bootloader, likely the bootloader were flashed correctly.
Power down the tab, and re-enter download mode and re-flash but make sure it completes itself.

Here, a very easy to follow going back to Gingerbread stock, follow carefully:
You can download any official firmware at http://fus.nanzen.se/
1a. Download Fus Check Downloader 2.1 from the above site. Using the Fus Check downloader, download a Firmware for your region. It will automatically decode the .enc2 file to.zip file
(For your case choose GT-P1000M)
1b. Download Odin3-v1.85
2. Extract the .zip file generated from decoding file to a folder and you will get
tar.md 5 file.
3. Start Odin - put the .md5 to PDA
3a. If your last firmware was gingerbread, leave everything else as is (No .pit file, leave repartition unchecked).
3b. If your last firmware was NOT gingerbread (get pitfile, and check the repartition) Note -- open up the.md5 package to check if there is a pitfile included,
as well as dbdata included. If they are included, you don't need to find pit file again, you can use it for your flash.
4. Go to download mode on the G-tab, connect it to your computer,
and click start on Odin. It takes about 6 to 7 minutes to do the flashing.

I am on step 3b. There was a tar file but no MD5. The tar file included a pit file but no dbdata.
I am going to try this. Fingers crossed.

Looks like I need that dbdata file as there was an error to that effect on the tab. However I did get further than last time. The tab is still stuck at the Samsung screen.
Where can I find that dbdata file?

The issue was the dbdata.rfs file missing.

Too many people asking where is dbdata.rfs, factoryfs.rfs, pit files etc when using other method.
Could your problem stem from using dbdata.rfs from different ROM?

Yes, of course, but he specifically wanted a non-rooted stock, and most likely from his region (and probably is ready to sell the tab for the newer tablet )
@ThiesWindu: one more step, and you should be done! (Hopefully -- Unless Priyana's fear is true... then the dbdata might not be for your Tab
go to Recovery Mode, and do a Factory Wipe and a Data Cache wipe.

The tab is working. The dbdata file seems to have done the trick. The tab works fine just takes longer to boot than before. Had to re-install a ton of apps though. I guess there are different versions for the different droid versions.
Is the slow down on boot up of concern? This is the first time I have done this.
Why would the stock not include it?

First boot after flash always takes longer time. What happen is android is installing and configuring your device for the first time.
Dbdata, pit and bootloader are not always included in a packaged stock because some Releases are meant for 'upgrade'. Since these files rarely changed from version to version, it wouldn't be included.
That is also why Priyana directed you to Team Overcome's GB-Stock-safe, because they include everything in the package. But because they have complete package, sometimes it's overwhelming for some people to follow the instruction.
Perhaps now that you completed flashing your g-tab, if you go back to team overcome website, you will have less difficulties following their instruction.

It seems to take longer all the time. Once booted it seems smoother and faster than before.
I have a 2nd Galaxy Tab that I can compare the times to and then report back when I get home tonight.

updating your Canadian P1000M tab to android 4.4.4. or whatever other ROM you wish
I didn't want android 5 or up but the most stable Custom rom on my tab which only had the 2.3.3 update on it.
The problem with all the custom ROMs was they wouldn't work on the P1000M sim card model as only made for a P1000 .
There were a few threads about converting my current model to a P1000 but somewhat confusing about exactly what to do and where to get the downloads needed .After two days of playing around I found the guide and links in this thread as the most helpful they worked :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1881981
Once you install the GB Stock safe 5 tar file as per PDF instructions(which you need to read a few times ) use the JPZ Modem folder as per instructions on PDF –this is an Italian modem bin file but it will convert the P1000M to a P1000 which then allows you to complete the rest of the installs with the overcome wipe files and at the end of all the installs ,put your chosen recovery rom on tablet internal memory and flash using whatever custom Rom for a P1000 you wish (as there isn’t any links or availability for a P1000M except for gingerbread).Its a long process to get to using the custom rom but it works and seems to be the only way to go. I used omni nightly4.4.4 plus the gapps files and and updated SU zipfile.
Unfortunately once the omni ROMwas installed I kept getting the android process media has stopped message constantly so used the following to fix that issue :
Go to your app settings page (Settings > Applications > Manage Applications) and open Media Storage. Hit clear data.
If you have a custom recovery installed (most custom ROMs and kernels do have it), boot into it and fix permissions. In Clockworkmod Recovery, you can find it under “Advanced”. TWRP recover also has a similar option. Being a Linux-based OS, permissions are of paramount importance to smooth functioning of Android components.
In Manage Applications, open Google Services Framework. Clear data.
Open Google Play Store. Hit clear data. Note that this will clear all play store data, including your Google sign in. You will have to login with your Google / GMail account again the next time you open Play Store.
Open Download Manager, and clear its data too.
Backup your data and format SD card. Make sure to backup all data on your SD card, including media, apps and other files, before formatting it. Use FAT32 formatting, which is preferred for Android. This is because android.process.media is related to camera, gallery and other multimedia components, and SD card errors may cause this force close error.
Try a different SD card. Many SD cards, particularly those of class 6, 8 and 10, have been reported to not work reliably with Android devices. Class 4 seems to be the safest option .
Now running 4.4.4 on my tab P1000. thank goodness.

Tab GT-P1000 Which version of Clockworkmod do I install?

I have a non branded GT-P1000 Tab. Trying to follow instructions at http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-tab-gt-p1000-android-4-0-4-ics-aokp-rom-97483/ to install AKOP.40 ROM
Need Clockworkmod installed.
Installed Rom Manager then attempted to install Clockworkmod - It asks me to choose my phone type. Closest options are: Galaxy Tab - ATT, Samsung Galaxy Tab - T-Mobile, Samsung galaxy tab - VZW.
What do I install, or is there another version of Clockworkmod for non Branded TAB somewhere?

From Manager is not compatible with P1000
You may brick your device if you force install cwm recovery of different device.
The only method is to flash via Odin, a kernel that contains cwm recovery.
overcome kernel is one of them.
In fact it was recommended in all ICS rom install guide you find here.

Thanks for your prompt reply. The instructions for flashing overcome seems to have multiple steps and "IF's", with multiple opportunities to go wrong.
The android authority guide seems straightforward, and I have gone through some of it - except the guide makes no mention of how to get CWM.
Is there a simple way to get the right version of CWM installed, or something else that will do the same steps / functions.
If not, were exactly does the install part start and do I also have to install Odin?
Sorry for so many questions / uncertainty.

That is to flash a kernel that has CWM Recovery.
Either cf-root kernel or Overcome Kernel or Redpill kernel.
It is dead simple.
Download the tar file
Connect to Odin.
Flash.
Now, lets start by telling us what you have. P1000 running Froyo?
Rooted?
BTW, if you follow the complete Overcome guide, 99.999% you won't go wrong, if you follow every steps.
So read it 10 times if not sure.
The GB-Stock-Safe package mentioned in Overcome and available on their site, it contains the correct version of Odin (1.7) and the USB driver for Samsung.
32 bit and 64 bit driver for Windows.
Absolutely nothing else extra is needed. All there.

Actually you can flash a CWM.zip update without installing a kernel after you root your device.
But again, installing kernel with CWM included just like Priyana said would be a lot easier and simpler.

The tab is completely standard, never touched until a few days ago. Followed the instrictions at Android Authority to Root using z4Root
How do I know if it is rooted? (Ie was z4 root successful).
Did Wipe Data/Factory Reset, and Wipe Cache Partition - then realised I did not have ClockworkMod recovery installed.
That is where I am now.
I hope you do not mind me asking clarifications for your instruictions. Your guide said 'jump to .. flash overconme" - where does that part start.
The quide mentions downloading a gb stock safev5.zip , an Oversome Kernel.tar and 7 series wipe.zip
Note the gb stock.zip mentions Gingerbread Based - I have Fryo (what are the implications)
But your last reply just mentions downloading the tar file and using odin
Can you see that for someone who is not familiar with all this Android jargon this is all very confusing.
I am quite competent in following instructions, but most instructions assume certain conditions (without telling me if my Tab meets those conditions), and assumes I know what eg "odin sees it" means, where is odi, where do I install it, how do I use it.
What I really want is a straightforward guide that will tell me how to install AOKP ROM Build 40 onto MY Tab, without 'go here' and 'go there' and only do this IF ...

Hi ColinK,
Unfortunately there is no straight way to install AOKP.
I am afraid you have to follow the guide to the letter, sort of.
This is why.
Some froyo from for our tab has locked bootloader.
So if you are on froyo there is a small chance you had a locked one.
You need to root your tab then run an app to check and to patch.
(I forgot by now whether you need root to check... to patch definitely yes)
Now, that is why Overcome guide said if froyo you need to root.
It is not strickly necessary.
Now, let's assume you don't have locked bootloader.
You only need to use Odin and flash GB stock safe v5 (which is actually Gingerbread Samsung version JQ1 Italian rom)
So, you need Odin.
Unpack the gb stock safe and you find Odin and USB driver.
Install USB driver first, then plug in your tab and your PC will detect the new device.
Unplug your device.
Install Odin.
Launch Odin, put your device to download mode and plug your device in to PC.
I am not a big user of Odin. I use heimdall in Linux which is simple and just work, so my memory is sketchy.
Odin will detect your device. There will be messages on screen.
Line up the files according to the guide and flash.
If no error your tab rebooted and you have GB ROM.
that of course isn't the end because you need cwm.
So continue with the guide.
It asks you to use Odin to flash overcome kernel tar.
Do it and you will end up having cwm recovery.
That is the end of guide.
You don't need to flash overcome rom.
Just follow my other thread reply to get AOKP.

Addition info: The easiest way to check if you are rooted or not:
Download and install 'root check' or 'got root?' from google play store.
If the rooting failed, you can try the doomslords rooting script. It was my favorite root script up to GB2.3.3
Once you succesfully rooted, continue download the bootloader patch for froyo.

I have been on AOKP for so long, all this rooting, bootloader and all are a blur now.

I can feel you. I can't even 100% remember if gb-stock-safe is pre-rooted or overvcome kernel gives root access for it.

Well Colink, I must say.....priyana's guides are one of the best ones for installing roms ...it's just perfect...I flashed my tab with aokp without even getting a single error....read the overcome guide perfectly ...I know it's a bit confusing but read it ten times and u will be just fine

I too am trying to get the Tab up to ICS via the overcome procedure, links are down on overcome and not all the links on the tabfirmware are working, specifically the Overcome_Kernel_v4.0.0.zip doesn't work, with a nice <This file does not exist, the access to the following file is limited or it has been removed due to infringement of copyright.> message.
There's also the link to the full overcome site as a screen capture or something in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20974872, but it's now giving a 404, so my confidence level for doing this is now low ;-(
Any help appreciated. pls, pls, pretty pls.

I recommend first upgrading to 2.3.3, then flashing chainfire's modded cwm via odin:

and then flashing overcome via cwm:

Ok so thanks to all who helped out with links to roms and guides.
I now have a lovely Galaxy Tab with ICS from AOKP.
And for anyone who would like to try but hasn't yet it really is surprisingly easy, just take your time and make sure to do it right, you won't regret the upgrade to ICS

[Q] Rooting i957r lte troubles

I am having a dilemma, and google is not forthcoming with relevent results, nor was searching the threads here.
So here is my issue, I have updated my sgh-i957r lte to the stock 4.0.4 ics, and cannot find a plausable way to root.
All of the guides on flashing I have found are either for honeycomb, or a leaked version that is not compatable.
The adb guides I have found are also for the previously leaked versons of ics or honeycomb.
So I suppose my question is, how would I go about rooting this update?
I am a fairly new android user, and this has me stumped.

Anybody? I would really appreciate some input on this, even if it's just saying if it is even possible or not.

Go to the i957 development thread, then look for the root method.
Ignore kernel stuff, download the Odin package and the clockwork recovery.
On a windows PC, unzip Odin, and put the clockwork recovery in the PDA slot and run it.
Then, on your tab, download the TWRP 2.1.1 package and install it from clockwork recovery.
That will get you a really good recovery, but not root.
AFAIK, there is no root package for ICS as a standalone zip or Odin tar. But you can then try out danno 2.0.6 and go from there.
Its a telus base, but that doesn't matter as long as you don't use the rogers apps. This will get you rooted.
You can also try nrvates cm10 or dannos AOKP, which are both excellent.

[Q] Flashing & Upgradation of SGS I9000

Hi All,
A very good morning to all.
As the title suggests, I am requesting guidance in step by step manner. Since there is so much information that I am confused & hence creating this thread.
Below are the complete info of the phone:
Model Number: GT-I9000
Firmware Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: I9000DDJV7
Kernel Version: [email protected]#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.DDJVB
My phone is a stock phone & has been never flashed before.
As per my research, its said that I should have a custom recovery in place & Clockworkmod recovery is the one of the best. I want to install the same using ROM Manager rather than using ODIN. I have got it from Google Store. But after clicking on install/upgrade "Clockworkmod recovery" then confirming my phone model. Then when I click Flash Clockworkmod Recovery I get this error - "An error occured while flashing your recovery".
I am not using ODIN as I can't delete update.zip file from my SD Card. Hence I am avoiding that approach so that I don't have any issues with accidental deletion of update.zip.
Requesting guidance.

Now, I have found an app called root checker. It is giving me the below info:
SU - Not Found.
Root Access - No Access.
Please guide me on what should I do next.

Hey there,
So the reason why ROM manager isn't working for you is precisely the thing you discovered using Root Checker. You're not rooted, and ROM Manager needs root access to work. (ROM Manager doesn't install Clockworkmod properly either, so you may want to refrain from using that).
So you need to root your device first.
The easiest and safest way of doing this is
1.) Flashing XXJW4 using Odin (if you're unable to use Odin for whatever reason this step isn't easily done).
Then
2.) Flashing Cf-Root made for XXJW4 (the thread is in these forums) through Odin.
This will root your device and install CWM onto it, so you can flash away.

It may but I do not recommend it. I have done that a couple times but with xxjvk and I think xxjvo. If you gona try it do it at your own risk. Rather download the cf root for ddjv7

Hmmm, I don't think one was made for DDVJ7. Chainfire stopped making them after JW4 so a lot of newer firmwares are missing.
I wouldn't recommend trying, but you SHOULD be able to flash in a stock rom or stock kernel again should something go wrong.
But as I said, I wouldn't try it for the sake of safety.
Easier to flash XXJW4 instead because at least you know that the CF-Root made for it will obviously work
