i presume i need to install CWM 1st? what do i backup before i install above said rom.
is this a safe way with no yellow triangle and binary count and is it easy enough to put back to stock for warranty purposes?

Install CWM recovery by flashing the corresponding kernel to your current ROM from Chainfire's thread, they will be in post #4 if I remember correctly.. Flash using method described in post #2 the "already rooted.bat" method and you will have a working CWM recovery
Boot into said recovery: shut down your phone, press and hold 3 buttons: power + home + volume up and from there do a backup of your current ROM "another easier way would be to use the CWM app that cones with CF Root kernel and make a backup from there"
It is completely safe to flash through recovery, no yellow triangle and no flash counter will increase
The Check ROM will indeed update your PDA and CSC, but I don't think it will update your PHONE "aka modem"..there is a separate thread for modems to choose from and flash what suits you best
Hope this helps
What is the difference flashing from CWM recovery or using Mobile Odin? Sorry, if this is a stupid question. I'm still learning to tweak my Note.

my friend wants to change the rom on his stock i9000
is there a tutorial or app that can root, install CWM, etc so that i can just boot into CWM and flash a new rom?
thanks
EDIT:
from a quick read, do i do this?:
. Rooting your phone and flashing a custom Kernel.
3.1. Download your preferred kernel (the version for Odin, not the one for CWM).
3.2. Open up Odin or Heimdall.
3.3. Put you phone into "Download mode" and connect it to your computer (DO NOT CONNECT THE PHONE BEFORE OPENING ODIN OR THIS WILL NOT WORK).
3.4.1. If you are using Heimdall, unpack your kernel until you end up with a file called zImage. Select that in Heimdall in the box for "Kernel (zImage)" and click Start.
3.4.2. If you are using Odin, select the file you downloaded in the PDA box and click Start.
3.5. After your Phone reboots, go into "Recovery mode" and go to "Advanced Speedmod ULK features" -> "ROOT / Install Superuser".
3.6. After rebooting the phone again, you should have root permissions.

If it's stock, flash ramads jvt with odin. You'll then have a rooted rom with cwm recovery.

Is he on gingerbread, if so follow the above process - you may need to flash a rooted kernel (chainfires would probably be best) afterwards as pda in odin.
If not on gingerbread, it may be quicker to flash milky's rom, it's got odin and full instructions in the download, and gb bootloaders.

your going to have to explain this to me, im really confused now
It's best to flash to the latest stock rom before installing a custom rom. Ramads jvt is deodexed but does not have root - so if you flash jvt, you will need to flash CFroot kernel after for root and cwm.
Ramads jvt does not have gingerbread bootloaders, so if it is on froyo or eclair, gb bootloaders will be needed.
If all this seems a pain, milky's rom is odin flashable, has bootloaders, root, cwm and also has odin and full instructions in the download.
Hope this is more clear.

Hello,
as i have no access to development forum i have to ask here my question:
My current status is:
- have my Samsung Galaxy Note rooted using Zergrush Method
- rom: KKA
- kernel: AbyssNote v3.1
my questions are:
- how to flash newest stock rom LA3, which method to use CWM, mobile odin pro or Odin PC?
- do i have to reflash the kernel to stock kernel of KKA rom before i can flash the new stock rom?
I like to keep my device rooted with CWM if possible. If someone please who got time could give me a detailed guide step by step how todo it. Sorry for my english its not my native one .
You can download CWM or MobileOdin versions of the modem. I used the CWM version and added it I think as a flash update. Just go through each of the options till you get the one that lets you choose the downloaded modem file.

k. am downgrading Firmware to KL3 , and i need procedure. but mainly it should not effect binary counter.
It's not possible to root LA4 directly at the moment, so you'll need to downgrade your device first:
- Download a firmware that's rootable from here.
- Download Odin from the link provided above
- Enter "Download Mode" on your device by shutting your Note completely off, then press and hold Volume Down + Home button + Power button
- Start Odin
- Unzip the firmware (the zip file you just downloaded), and you'll end up with a md5-file
- Go to Odin and click "PDA" and choose the md5-file
- Press "Start"
- Wait
- Done
Now you can root the device and get CWM, so go to this thread and do the "I Want ROOT + CWM" at the end of the first post.
- After you're rooted download LA4 again from the first link in this post
- Transfer it to your Note
- Open CWM on your Note
- Flash it
Done. You now have a rooted LA4.

No it won't.
Just make 1 thing clear. binary count raise only, If you flash any custom ROM/Kernel with PC Odin.
Follow LordManhattan's advise and still once refer Installation guide in detail in post #2 n 3 of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Just to add, Downgrade Firmware shud be direct rootable. (before KL7), N if particularly i specify, I can say Downgrade first to indian ROM KL1, I have flashed this ROM in at least 5 Notes.
That means Flashing Custom ROM using CWM doesn't effect Binary Count rite??
if you flash using CWM or mobile odin it wont if you do using oding from PC it will still not sure about official firmware

Hey,
Dr.Ketan, can you tell me please if there is a chance to root the original LA4 (never changed rom) if I don't have access to a Windows and only to a Mac?
I only want to root it for the basic tweaks and apps. Don't need a custom rom at the moment. I want to root it and use it as is while I wait for the official ICS.
Thanks.
There is no Queston of window or Mac,LA4 is non rootable, to get root, first u need to downgrade older rom.

Thanks. I got ahead of the events. I didn't meant that. I meant if I can do the procedure of downgrading and everything I might need to do in order to root or to install a custom rom or another stock using ONLY my Samsung Note and a Mac.
Q1: I can downgrade using a exclusively a Mac with Lion on it?
Q2: If the answer to Q1 is affirmative, can I root it after downgrade also using only Lion on Mac?
Thanks again!
I have never heard mac pc odin. Plz google for it. So without pc odin you cant downgrade.

Yes, I saw there was one root with mac solution, but works only if the Note is rootable. LA4 is not. So I must downgrade first. )))))
Nevermind, I'll try to do it with Windows, somehow. Thanks!
I am also new to this, and this thread is very clear. The bit I do not understand is what Kernal I should be running. Custom roms available can have a variety of kernals e.g LA3, LA4 etc. Do i have to choose a rom that has a kernal compatible with my phone? is there some rational to running one kernal vs another? I notice that it may be possible to flash a rom and keep a previous kernal e.g a CF kernal. is this advisable? your advice would be very welcome.
You don't need to flash a new kernel. Most of the custom ROMs includes a custom kernel that's good enough, but if you're interested in testing a few of them then you can do it without any problems.

Now is when I am lost. I did all the above (thanks, by the way) and I run KKA now. I had LA4 (Germany) when bought it, then downgraded to root.
Now I am rooted but when I try to update firmware with CWM, nothing happens. I have to put the ZIP in the Note or the MD5? I tried with the MD5 two times.
Is there something I do wrong? Is any other method apart from CWM? I mention that when I downgraded and first booted, CWM said something about "not being compatible and some functions were disabled".
Any ideas?
EDIT:
I couldn't work it out as expected and I went back to my original LA4 (Germany).
Hi,
I am new to Android Phones. I tried to root my Galaxy Note using the above method
2. Long, No raised couter OR Exclamation mark
-Downgrade to Rootable GB ROM and Root it. OR Download This pre rooted GB ROM and flash using PC Odin
-Wipe cache, data and delvic cache from recovery
-Install Mobile Odin Pro
-Copy ICS ROM file in .tar (you want to flash) to Internal SD card (recommended, but you can have it on EXT too)
-Download Odin (.tar) version of custom kernel like Notecore, Speedmod, CF root kernel Or other any with same function. If newbies have confusion to select, here is one for example Notecore V12 std kernel. You can use this. But newer version can be found on link mentioned above.
-Open Mobile Odin Pro
-select open file
but i run mobile odin without downloading the odin version of custom kernel (I got confused, I thought I needed to do thisafter running mobile odin) and now my phone is stuck in flashing mode for about 45mins switching on and off.
What should I do?
Thank you in advance for your help...
Christina
Flash Pre rooted ROm again Wipe cache and data and repeat procedure, that will be safe.
It worked! Thank you!
Just a quick question...
I followed all the steps mentioned on the thread up to installing mobile odin and copying the ics rom....
but I am confused with the odin version of custom kernel...I am trying to find the correct cf-root kernel through the link you provided but I can not find the KJ1. I downloaded the one you have attached below mobile odin screenshots. Is that ok?
And also where do I copy the kernel? Internal or external sd? Should it be in a specific directory in order to be detected by mobile odin?
Sorry for all these questions but I looked around and there is no specific instructions anywhere about this part.
Thank you...

Since I am new to the android platform phones, I think it will be better if i explained what my objective is so I won't confuse you too....
I want to be able to install and use rooted applications like titanium back up. I read that in order to do this I have to root my phone.
So what I want to do now is to root my phone in order to use ie titanium black without upping my flash counter.
Also I do not care to have a custom ICS, I prefer the stock one for now until I become more familiar with all these.
I followed the steps but the customn kernel things has confused me.
My phone is as mentioned before a galaxy note with ICS 4.04 before I started the procedure, now I have Gingerbread 2.35.
What should I do?

Thank you for the quick reply!!!
Just to be sure, when you say first method you mean the one below
1. Short, easy - requires to reset counter
-Download Odin (.tar) version of custom kernel like Notecore, Speedmod, CF root kernel Or other any with same function. If newbies have confusion to select, here is one for example Notecore V12 std kernel. You can use this. But newer version can be found on link mentioned above.
-Flash it using PC odin for PDA tab.
-You will get exclamation mark and raised counter, which can be reset with Triangle Away
-First time opening triangle away application, it will ask to download file(flasher), let it complete. then choose to reset counter, it will restart in special recovery an finish job.\
If yes, then this brings us back - almost - to my original question....how do i use the custom kernel (cf or notecore) with odin? I know it uzips to a zimage etc but how do I use it which odin? Also which cf kernel -if iuse this one- is correct for my phone? Is there a link you can provide that explains all these?

My apologies for the noob situation (new to Android tho a veteran iphone jailbreaker) but I did try my best reading lots of threads to seek the exact info I need:
Things I've done:
1) I got my N7000 with stock ICS 4.0.4 (Kernel: ZSLPM) yesterday
2) I followed some online resources in my local language forums and used both CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip to "root" the phone
3) I then started researching for ways to flash to JB rom but found out info regarding possible bricking hazard with stock ICS kernel and CWM.zip
appreciate if anyone could point me the safe way to :
either
1) Remove the CMW.zip and Su-Busybox-installer.zip to unroot the device and make it back to virgin state? so I can start everything over again and follow Dr. Ketan guides for rooting with safe kernel (I read we could flash the unstaller but that also need to put me back to Recovery, safe to do this under CWM.zip?)
OR
2) how could I flash my current setup (rooted already with CWM.zip) with a safe kernel ?
Thanks very much for any guidance.
Regards,
Anthony

So you mean after I root my N7000 with CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip I have actually already flashed my kernel and rom in the phone already? I thought I have only rooted it but the kernel and rom are still untouched? please advise and thanks for responding.

You can go to Settongs>>About Phone & under "Kernel version" you will be able to see which kernel you are using (for ex: my Note shows HydraCore_v5.34 which is a custom kernel).
So, if you are still on Stock (i.e., un-safe kernel), use PC Odin & flash custom kernel (use Dr. Ketan's guide). Make sure *NOT* to wipe/factory reset when you are on stock kernel. In case if you want to unroot, then also you have Dr. Ketan's guide in the same post.
Start using thanks button rather than posting thanks.
Even if u r on stock rom and stock kernal to unroot flash them back using odin

CWM.zip is a tenp recovery.. it doesnot stay in the system after reboot. thou su-busybox stays... but if the phone has booted up that means u have root access now...
just install the philz kernel from here for ur rom. this is a safe kernel and u will be able to do wipes. this kernel can be flashed from stock recovery.

Thanks for the advice.
Things are all good now after I got stuck with my first attempt flashing to Abyss which I later found out it doesn't support ICS then I flashed it to Hydracore then after that flash it to RocketROm and I'm now one happy user

Next time do not use CWM zip to root your phone. Use Dr Ketan's method of rooting, because its dangerous.
