[Q] How do I safely revert to GB from ICS without bricking - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
The recent rash of hard bricks and fried eMMC chips experienced in ICS roms based on leaked ICS binaries has got me spooked. I want to revert to Gingerbread in a safe way.
Current rom setup is: LP5 base, LP5 kernel, LP6 baseband and imilka's CM9 v3.
Current options at my disposal:
Nandroid backup Gingerbread 2.3.6 DarkyROM v3.3 accessible through CWM
Mobile Odin, for flashing stock .tar's
Other? Open to suggestions
Various users have reported hard bricks after invoking the full wipe command in CWM on leaked binary kernels. I believe my options displayed above are fairly safe but can someone confirm this, has anyone succesfully reverted to GB after flashing a .tar in Odin or using a nandroid backup?
Many thanks,
mcmaddcatt

Follow the guide, it is quite simple and cohesive.

install abyss kernel 4.2 and then restore your backup
worked many times for me

That's all fine. But what do we do if we are on ICS and want to go back to Gingerbread when we don't have a Gingerbread backup from earlier?

1. Download any custom GB Rom (Darky, Cassie, whatever)
2. Flash Abyss 4.2
3. Reload recovery
4. Do your wipes
5. Flash your custom GB

The safe way would be to flash a stock ROM with PC Odin, or flash a safe kernel with PC Odin and do your flashing with that. The methods outlined above don't sound very safe to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

From what I understand, flashing anything with the leaked kernels is not safe.

I thought the problem was flashing anything with the leaked repack ICS kernels was where the risk of frying your emmc came from, so wouldn't flashing abysskernel from an ICS recovery carry that same risk, hence the recommendations to flash a GB ROM via PC Odin?
Or have I missed a step somewhere ...

How to roll back from CM9 to stock properly ?

Hi everyone,
I would like to know what's the best way and the cleanest to roll back my note from CM9 to stock ICS or GB. I like the work done by CM crew but I really miss smemo.
Can anyone explain me the steps, or show me a link where it's described because I haven't found anything serious about it.
Thanks a lot.

You need to be on GB in order to flash CM9.
Now, if you had a nandroid backup of a GB ROM, and then flashed CM9, then yes you could restore the GB ROM from your nandroid backup.
Last question, if I do the flash to GB from mobile Odin and the GB rom isn't rooted, pure stock. Will I exposed myself to any problem or it's safer to do the flash with Odin PC ?

Lol make sure stock is for your csc region.
Most stock are nonwipe, and so you will have to do factory reset and wipe caches from restore.
Cleanest is go to recovery, and factory reset, and wipe cache, and dalvik cache, and then in mounts format data and system. After this head into download mode and pc Odin your rom on it. But if you get a little perform a repartitions to when flashing. You will lose data this way.. All at your own risk
edit: do cleanest from gb or a safe kernel only.

see, if your phone was bought unlocked from Malaysia then you can flash any Malaysia stock rom using odin, no matter what rom/BB you are currently on (stock or custom) but I always suggest flashing stock GB firmwares as you can wipe them in stock recovery if required immediately after flashing through odin.
So now, if your phone was bought in Malaysia then download any of the 2 Malaysia GB firmware from post #2 in the link I gave you and flash using odin or mobile odin as per the instructions given in that thread.
tq

If you are on cm rom then flash gb first. If on stock gb then wipe and flash stock ics using odin.
If you choose to flash ics over cm and if it stuck in bootloop then you wont be able to wipe in recovery because of emmc bug, so gb is best.
Stock GB rom from your region will most probably allow you to update to ics using kies, or else you can flash via odin later.

Mr. Sahilarora2003 guide will be the best and safer way to downgrade to gb.
After downgrade to gb, you will facing some fc problem when setting up the phone at 1st boot. Dont panic, just turn off the phone, boot into stock recovery and do full wipe, then you will be fine. Good luck mate.

Gb roms are safe to flash... Ics comes with bricks. Never ever wipe with stock ics kernel.. Since u want to downgrade u have to use odin as it is the safest way to flash.

[Q] Restoring the phone after using CWM.zip and SU-Busybox-installer.zip

My apologies for the noob situation (new to Android tho a veteran iphone jailbreaker) but I did try my best reading lots of threads to seek the exact info I need:
Things I've done:
1) I got my N7000 with stock ICS 4.0.4 (Kernel: ZSLPM) yesterday
2) I followed some online resources in my local language forums and used both CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip to "root" the phone
3) I then started researching for ways to flash to JB rom but found out info regarding possible bricking hazard with stock ICS kernel and CWM.zip
appreciate if anyone could point me the safe way to :
either
1) Remove the CMW.zip and Su-Busybox-installer.zip to unroot the device and make it back to virgin state? so I can start everything over again and follow Dr. Ketan guides for rooting with safe kernel (I read we could flash the unstaller but that also need to put me back to Recovery, safe to do this under CWM.zip?)
OR
2) how could I flash my current setup (rooted already with CWM.zip) with a safe kernel ?
Thanks very much for any guidance.
Regards,
Anthony

So you mean after I root my N7000 with CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip I have actually already flashed my kernel and rom in the phone already? I thought I have only rooted it but the kernel and rom are still untouched? please advise and thanks for responding.

You can go to Settongs>>About Phone & under "Kernel version" you will be able to see which kernel you are using (for ex: my Note shows HydraCore_v5.34 which is a custom kernel).
So, if you are still on Stock (i.e., un-safe kernel), use PC Odin & flash custom kernel (use Dr. Ketan's guide). Make sure *NOT* to wipe/factory reset when you are on stock kernel. In case if you want to unroot, then also you have Dr. Ketan's guide in the same post.
Start using thanks button rather than posting thanks.
Even if u r on stock rom and stock kernal to unroot flash them back using odin

CWM.zip is a tenp recovery.. it doesnot stay in the system after reboot. thou su-busybox stays... but if the phone has booted up that means u have root access now...
just install the philz kernel from here for ur rom. this is a safe kernel and u will be able to do wipes. this kernel can be flashed from stock recovery.

You Can use odin but be mindful because you might end up bricking your phone its better to flash first dbdata.rfs....before flashing it to stock gingerbread rom

Actually, no, it doesn't matter in which order you flash it in. You can flash the stock GB rom first- you'll just end up in a bootloop. Then just pull the battery, insert and get into download, flash in dbsdata.rfs.tar.

Not sure about going straight to custom GB- but sice they're just modified stock roms, yes, I believe it should work.

I have done this few times... just flash CM7 over any JB rom, reboot recovery and then flash CM7 again.. after that you can go to any other rom you want.. :good:

[Q] Note Stock restore

Hello, I'm currently using a G Note on [email protected] ICS, Build Number IMM76D.XXLRK.
I'm thinking about updating to the JB leak for The G Note but im worried about bricking my phone can anyone tell me what the chance of it bricking is? and how id go about changing my firmware from this rom?
Thankyou.
Flash Philz kernel.
Full wipe and flash whichever ROM you want.....
Also, use search as this question has been asked many times in the past
If you have speedmod kernel the chance of bricking its 0... And if you want the ODIN official JB leak just go Odin mode power+home+volume down then flash.. You don't need to wipe going from Ics to JB TW

No, you should allways follow the installation instructions in the specific thread for the JB Custom Rom you want.
If you choose the XXLSA leak from sammobile.com (that was the base leak for all following XXLSA/C Custom Roms) then you can use Mobile Odin - I did this many times without problems.
OK thankyou

Mobile odin and pc odin is similar.
The only different from what I know is.... with mobile odin you can keep ur root, and flash custom kernel.
Whereby with pc odin, all will be brand new. No root, stock kernel.
If ur device is rooted alrd, and u have cwm recovery installed, why don't u choose custom rom, and just flash it from cwm recovery?
Easier, fast, no headache.
Custom rom has some tweaks that might improve performance.
But choice is urs. Good luck mate.
Sent from my GT-N7105 at the corner of this rounded earth
I prefer Mobile odin if already rooted as this way we can change the kernel at the time of flash to be safe
