Get ready ... DropBox Dropquest II starts May 12

What is dropbox 2 going to provide as a point of difference? Faster syncing I hope.

Fun, promotion and a reflection of how the DropBox team use creativity as part of there company culture
Keeping up the good team spirit eventually will lead to new ideas.
Google Labs is another example how to promote good ideas ...
Sync time is low by design I think, preventing unnecessarily filesharing among the masses (like new firmwares and movies)

F**K!#**[email protected]!!

Been on vacation for two weeks now. Come back from my vacation and with horror i read what M$ have done; No roms on this site anymore......words cannot express my sorrow.........where are we going to
what do you mean ? most of the roms will be relocated to p2p networks, torrents or free filesharing sites
Muahhh!!!
This is what Mocrosoft has rached.
The Scene has just moved to the Underground!
Instead of using the possibilties and advantages of an interested and active
Community they just moved the whole to the Underground.
One time again Microsoft looses 100 Point in my eyes!
Well In the PC area Linux is developing quiet fast to be able to rival with the MS Systems. What a pity that on the mobile Device Scene there isn't the same!
Sorry for my bad english.
!God bless the XDA-Developres!
how to keep track

there must surely be a more effective way to do this. Google is great but not efficient and hence time consuming.
what is a good idea is what explode has done, but i fear M$ will quickly catch on
Well maybe the comunnity should buy a server in Papua New Guinea.
Or a another Country that doesn't like M$

I was thinking of new firmwares and torrent.

Setting up a Torrent (tracker) (openbittorrent?) for new firmwares? Would it be used?
That's a good idea !
Enough of this *upload crap ^^
No point really. The roms are small enough to host on file servers, and they come quite frequently too.

True, but torrents allow for a way faster method of distribution.
+1 for torrent distribution.
i too prefer torrent over fileshare / rapidshare and all the partners and look alikes
torrent is click and go, then you can forget about it.
but all those sharing sites are a pain in the you know where, it's a massive waste of time waiting for those sites and the endless hoops it forces you to click through before it lets you download, and assuming they are not hiding the link elsewhere in another tiny micro text, or some button lost in the massive swarm of spam hugemongeous banners totally ofuscading it.
worse are those times when you downloaded other stuff for other project from those sites, and says you already ran out of the max alloted download for the day, and have to wait like 6 hours before you can try again....
Sure go ahead. As long as someone with decent bandwidth is seeding it, it should be good.

not some one with decent bandwidth, the idea of torrents is to leave it always on, so that many many many people can use as little bandwidth as possible to create a full fast download stream.

I mean the initial seeding, but of course if several people have the file from some other source...
Meh. I actually have a rapidshare account so I can download quite quickly from there
If not that, then I would prefer usenet.
Torrents dont regularly fill my 150mbits ...

No More Dropbox for Me

http://jdsawyer.net/2011/07/02/put-it-in-the-cloud-are-you-nuts/
Well, I sure as hell am not using this app anymore on my phone to help push files to it. And I dunno if devs on XDA will want to continue putting their stuff onto here anymore to help ease distribution. I wouldn't.
Thoughts?
Thoughts? Some legally illiterate blogger misunderstands TOS and starts scaremongering to get publicity.
As one of the comments states there are more serious concerns about storing files on a cloud service, especially with groups like anonymous and lolz secz that would hack it just to show it can be done.
Cloud storage systems are often more secure than personal computers. They attempt seurity. Most of the PC's I've seen you just need the IP and your in. I have yet to find a completely secure system. (My security is just several layers of chroots)

Personal experience
Never had stolen or stole any data from cloud storage systems. But have had friends had tons of data right off their computers. Most people don't put ANY effort into security other than a login password.

You're lucky then.
800,000 sidekick users might have reason to dissagree.
Dropbox is free (2gb) and works just about flawlessly.
Let the the lawyers figure this silly nonsense out, I'm not gonna stop using it. Now, if you upload copyrighted material to dropbox, and then post a public link to that material, that's on you.
I've never used it, but this news article will definititly make me think twice before signing up. Not to say i won't, possibly, someday, but i have no need for it right now, and this "scaremongering" as you put it worked. I'll just stick to uploading things to my google account for now.

Thanks for that!
Now i am in formed of whats going on. lol
i am fairly sure that nothing is going to happen when you upload your music. Just don't link it online to share it with the world.
what a crock. Its a lowball way for companies to get peoples ideas and work without paying for them. I knew cloud storage was too good to be true for long.
Doesnt look like ill be using any of them for this. Oh wait I dont have to since I use website servers to host my own stuff.

What is?
All it does is allow them to do what YOU want them to do with it, such as when you share drop box folders and their content with others, you're giving DB the right to share your data at your request.

Exactly, if you have files stored in dropbox, no one can use the file unless you copy a link and share it... i mean its not like 4shared where you upload something then can search the site for files like copyrighted material and what not... The only way someone can access your stuff if you share the folder or link with them....

Unlike dropbox, the app Minus offers 10gigs of free space!

Minus offers 10gigs of free space, unlike dropbox and zumodrive. I just wanted to share the application with my XDA friends! Here's the link!
http://minus.com/rajverma3135http://minus.com/rajverma3135
SO Enjoy
@rajverma nice find
Another alternative is SugarSynch.com which offers 5gb free.
Also for those that have their own storage/server somewhere this is what i did.
I used iqbox-svn as synch software on the clients and VisualSVN As software for the server.
It doesn't have any web interface or recovery like dropbox has but heck it's all free and if you got the space/server might as well utilize it.
Ps: Sry for thread jacking
omg, i rly think i will use this!
i just registered.. with one single step, without even a need of email!!
holy ****, all registrations should be that fast xD
Minus.com is taking over the world
Seriously though, it seems to be a far superior alternative to Dropbox. Good for hosting files too, with no Bandwidth limitations. I'm sure a lot of people here will use it to share their dev work.
Thumbs up from me!
CX also offers 10GB free space and it works on all phone / desktop models just like dropbox
this minus, only works for android, iphone, and windows
not as useful as the other 2
Nah man, I'm good with dropbox. These alternatives come with a catch of MINUS the features.
nice, almost filled my dropbox, thanks
meh
it is a lot more initial storage, but i have almost 16gbs free on dropbox from referrals. on top of the reliability and capabilities of dropbox, i find everything i need satisfied that way.
That is a nice find. Is there a way to organize the files with folders like Dropbox?
The big selling point of dropbox is not the size of the space but the ease of use. Their app works easy, site works easy, etc.
I gave sugarsync a try and their website was some CSS/javascript clusterfuck, everything required loading and had to be fancy. Dropbox on the other-hand is a simply file tree, and everything is right there.
Sounds interesting. I will give them a try. Thanks
I simply created an ftp server using iis on my pc and made the root directory a folder on my 1tb storage hard drive. Than used dns redirrection on my website to have it a named server ftp.
Though not all people have the resources i LOVE it.
I have as many files/movies as i need at my disposal on my phone and can link without the worry of getting my links shut down.
Sorry if i'm a little off topic i just thought i'd throw my 2¢ in.
I thought google was doing something similar ????
How is the upload and download speeds

What about resume support?
Yep, I've been on minus for a few days, and I like it more than Dropbox. Got 12 gigs, and if you want more storage use my referral link in my sig. Both of us will get an extra gig.

Depends on ur ISP really.
that is quite generous of them to give 1gb per referral, I think dropbox only gives 0.25gb.

SkyDrive FTW
25GB for free, and no limit for Office files and photos! 5GB can be sync'ed.
And all you need is a Live ID or Hotmail account.

Skydrive offers 25GB Free Storage (Limited Offer)

I use Sky drive a lot more than dropbox since I have Windows 8 the intergration is good. Today they are offering a free upgrade to 25GB of Cloud storage. Just login to Skydrive select Claim your 25 GB and click on Free Upgrade. Done

don't use it either, i use DropBox and i'm waiting for Google Drive. I might use it once microsoft gets off it's back side and gives us a proper android app
Bloody hell, nice one! I've got more cloud storage than I know what to do with at the minute
At least we got some integration to it thanks to HTC though! And unless I'm mistaken , it looks like its forever, instead of just 2 years

I can't find it. I can only see the pay alternatives.
Is it only for some countries?
Damn
I didn't know about it until I read it here.
Just upgraded my account and I am feeling ... excited
3GB at Drop box
50GB at Box.net
25GB at Sky drive
Fock Yeah
Thank You so much to thread maker who made us aware of this great moment.

Did you already have an account? The wording suggests it's for existing customers (but I can't find any T&Cs anywhere to confirm that). I can't see why it would be country-specific though.
Cool, thanks for the heads up! I upgraded, and so did my girlfriend, she needed a 21 gig+ free online storage for backing up her pictures

Apparently I didn't have Skydrive on my 1nd account, but on my other older one I could receive it. So it works.
I upgraded now .. thanks for that information ...
can't complain 25GB with dropbox and now 25GB with SkyDrive
So now i have 25GB of Free space. After installing Win8 and therefore opt in Skydrive I haven't used it at all. But with Dropbox its different story because Iam using it everyday and have almost 31GB now
Great! thankyou for letting us know! an extra 25gb of storage will always come in handy
Thanks for the heads up on this, never used it before but will check it out.
THanks... though i use Drop.... but why not keep it on the safe side
