So I'm hoping people with a little more knowledge than me in PCs would help me figure out this issue I have at the moment with my computer.
Is there any way to block an app/program from detecting your external display? In other words, still use my Vizio as a monitor, yet fool my computer to think it's my laptop's actual monitor?
The reason I'm trying to figure this out is so I can use the Optimum for Laptop app. It only runs on laptops and will not work if it detects that you're using an external display. I have no choice at the moment to use one, since the screen on my Dell Inspiron is shattered. Any tips/advice is appreciated
Try mirroring your display instead of just choosing the external as your main display. Therefore you have both the display on the laptop and on the external screen. If you choose the external as your main it cuts off the feed to the laptops screen. You will probably have to leave the lid open or go into your power settings and
choose do nothing when you close the lid. Hope this helps.

Yeah I say mirror the display as well. If that works, just toss a black shirt over your laptop screen so the light doesn't leak through.
I tried that, but then it would not stream the channel. Like it knows.....
Thanks for replying though. I appreciate it.
try enabling only the external monitor (if you haven't already) using your video card/driver software. i know this is possible in software like catalyst control center and others.
So here's what happens now. The warning about me using the external display doesn't pop up anymore when I change the display to clone on both monitors. But the channels will not load, unless I unplug the VGA to my laptop. Then the channel will start playing. I'm trying to figure out any way to still use my monitor but at the same time my laptop doesn't detect it.
I have the same exact question as the OP.
Have you found another solution to this? If I clone my display, the max resolution to my monitor is much less than I want it to be (monitor is capable of 1920 x 1080).
Thanks.
I have the same issue has there been any progress?

do i need to be a member to reply to this? (I guess so lol) Optimum STILL doesn't support external display of their optimum for laptop, or thru the optimum app. It's RIDICULOUS! I subscribe to the basic tv but have no cable boxes since I only subscribed to lower my entire bill as I got a promotion for a year. I watch tv now and again on my iphone 6 or on my rca 10" tablet. I have antenna and get all the major channels but when it's really crappy weather out I will watch on tablet or phone. Would be nice if I can cast the picture to my 40" tv instead of watching on my iphone 6. Now that Altice has bought Optimum and doubled our speeds maybe they'll support external display. (But I doubt it....)

I am playing with the TV-out function on my phone... I went looking all over for a tv out cable, ended up trying my old Zen Vision:M 60gb (the fat one) video out cable, worked perfectly! now i'm wondering if i could have something different display on the TV than on my screen, like doing a power point presentation, and having presenter view on my screen, and the slideshow on the TV. Playing SNES games on the tv, and having just the controller showing on the screen. watching a movie on the tv and having the play/pause slider bar, on the screen. or EVEN having a video on the tv and using my phone for other things at the same time...

Doubtful because the TV-out is a complete copy of the screen.
It does not process anything itself.
Sorry to disappoint.
NOT TRUE, With some devices you can have only controls on the phone screen while watching video on TV...

This will be possible with the next generation chipset (which was announced recently). For now it can not be done.

Really which devices.
I am not trying to be rude. I'm asking this as a serious question.
It's possible over WiFi using DLNA compatible devices or various less universal remote control solutions. None of those have anything to do with the TV out ofcourse.

We could see this feature in the next samsung phone or TAB. I heard that samsung is working now with nvidia for using the Tegra processor. Maybe it'll have a split tv out feature or similar with the one on computers - secondary and primary screen.
@ sargasso : It's not a dumb question lol . I'm playing quake 3 on my phone (even on network with others) and you say it's to much to ask from a phone ?!? These 1 gig phones from totay's technoloy are no simple devices anymore, they can handle allmost anythig and can do actualy a lot of thing that notebooks do. With a dual screen view feature it's not about "if" or "not posible", but when. And "when" is very soon. Remember that not long ago there were notebooks with less hardware than these phones.
Mark my words (love this line from Matrix) ! - Pretty soon we'll see not only a split tv out but a new feature in wich you swipe the picture from your phone toward the lcd tv(via wifi/dlna) just like in the James Bond movie. Anything is posible. Next year the phones will even recieve a dual core cpu.
Yeah I dug up my old tv out cable which came with my N95 and that work perfectly...
I'd prefer hdmi out though.....
Most likely available before H2 - 2011

Yes i may have put it in the wrong forum, i'm sorry, i wasn't sure where to put it.
It is running on linux, and it has the ability to do multiple outputs, so it was just a matter of asking if the hardware could support it.

So I saw on reddit a nice clean looking install of an Asus tab in a BMW 335i and thought "I'll do the cheaper version all around". I went for the nook color installed in my 325i. Same method, so really the credit belongs to X-ception for his original concept. Nice work buddy.
I took it one step further and this cheap little tablet can be mounted either horizontally OR vertically and still be fine while riding. The downside of this is it most likely wiggles more than the transformer due to how I mounted it to allow either orientation. Also the transformer has some more weight to it.
Right now the audio is only connected via AUX cable, but I will be going the bluetooth route as well once I can manage to save $50 or so. For now it is a fun proof of concept and it can handle whatever kind of driving I've thrown at it. Again minimal wiggling and this is my first test with the nook in the car. For the minimal work required I'm certainly very happy with it.

Damn you guys are fast. In the time it took to fix the pics I already had 2 complaints about them haha.
You get the mount here: http://www.proclipusa.com/ Just buy the mount NOT the device holder (they don't have one for the nook color).
Then you buy the "pad tab" mounting system here. http://www.thepadtab.com/
The cool part is I now have one extra pad tab mount (comes with 2) so I can mount my nook somewhere else as well like my wall or something. I'm trying to think of something more creative though.
I know you can't tell from the pic, but its a 6 speed standard transmission and the nook being in the car in NO way interferes with my driving or it would have been pulled out immediately.
Very nice install and use of the PadTab. We love this stuff. We saw the other install on this site and are impressed with the creativity here!

Nice work!!
I'm trying to figure out how to position/mount the nook in my Jeep without getting in the way of anything else, and without blocking the windshield. It would also need it to be within easy reach of the driver for those days when I go 4-wheeling solo.
I think it would be very neat to use with off-road trail apps and an external GPS.
Any ideas?
Here's what my cockpit looks like:
Honestly? Give windshield mounting a try. I do it in my Tacoma, and unless i move to look at it, the nook does not block my view at all, nor has it caused legal issues (i know it has been seen by officers). Having it mounted right above the center console makes it really easy to use as well, all by my self.

I have a blueray player that has an ethernet port. My question is besides using a hardwire. What is the simplest way to connect it to my wireless router?
I thought of several, like a ehternet bridge to my laptop, a wireless ehernet bridge, and the adapter that runs internet threw the powerwires.
Which way is the easiest, lasting and permenent solution (besides hardwire).?

They're all usable and good solutions, but I'd personally go for going through power lines. I don't have it myself but plan to get it very soon. A friend has it and he strongly recommends it. He gets speeds round his whole house that wifi simply could not compete with.

Its like an extension box
You plug it into a socket, and it converts the socket to a socket + Ethernet port
So for e.g.
You plug in one where you place your router, and connect it by a cable
Next, near your TV/DVD player, you connect another, and then connect the cable
And then just you need to do so more setup, cant remember now, a bit sleepy, will post tomorrow
From my fingers to your eyez
It sounds like lies, but it's true!
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/power-network.htm
My mate picked up 2 for a fiver in a charity shop, so he has one in a socket near his router and then can move the other one round the house as required.
I've been advised that there are 2 different types - 85Mbps and 200Mbps. As long as you get the same type then you can mix and match makes, but he got a real bargain. The cheapest I can find on ebay is £32 for 2 200Mbps ones. If you're not too fussed about the bandwidth then you can get them cheaper.

The range is supposed to degrade anything over 300m, so that's quite a lot. Yes, obviously security would be an issue if the communication wasn't encrypted, but it is. You can set the encryption keys yourself, so it's down to you if it's not secure.

From the ASUS site:
"World’s first 7” quad-core tablet delivers an advanced multimedia experience with up to 9.5* hours of battery life".
*"Battery life may vary by use. Stated battery life measured by playing 720p video at 100 nits brightness, with an external microphone, Wi-Fi turned on, Gmail logged in".
Weird part about that note is the external microphone.
Would never have considered running with an external mike,
and that should have no effect on battery life anyway.

No, look at the panel at the bottom. It's using the tablet panel and not the "3 button" phone panel. Indicates tablet launcher.
The nexus 7 panel only shows 3 buttons (back, home, multi-task) even when running apps in tablet mode.
Furthermore in this picture there is no notification bar at the top, it is contained in the panel at the bottom like in the tablet UI.

If you don't care about bulk archos has some massive pmps. I have a 4.8 in 250 gb but I can't use it for anything other than in my car just because its so large.
Cheers, good shout - what do you think of the Archos 48?
It's alright. Nothing special (and the resistive screen sucks after being spoiled by capacitive screens), charging (through a proprietary cable) is slow and the GUI sucks, but you can't beat the price for the capacity (I got my 250gb for like 170 a year ago).
I should add that the battery is fairly long lasting from a full charge and that in order to play movies and certain file formats (you'll be fine with mp3s) you have to buy format packs (which I find to be an obnoxious and money hungry practice that Archos should be ashamed of).

It's alright. Nothing special (and the resistive screen sucks after being spoiled by capacitive screens), charging (through a proprietary cable) is slow and the GUI sucks, but you can't beat the price for the capacity (I got my 250gb for like 170 a year ago).

Yeah 500GB for £100, seriously tempted - £26 (independent site) to repair my 160GB iPod but like I said, something else could just fail as it has received heavy use. Had a look and it doesn't look like there are any ROMs for the 48, would be nice to pump it at least up to froyo... from the dimensions the 48 doesn't look too bulky, still pocketable?
Pocketable-maybe, but the weight is a pretty big factor. Not to mention that it's almost an inch thick (doesn't sound that bad until you have it right in front of you. I can post pictures for comparison to my Xoom or Nexus S if you're familiar with either.

I'm not 100% but I can guess what the nexus is like - pictures would be appreciated buddy!
Alright, I had to take the pictures with my Xoom so the size is a bit wonky but here you go.

Cheers, don't seem to be loading though?
*EDIT* Also is there a model (that's similar in price/storage space) that you'd recommend over the 48?

If you're on mobile it might take a while (they're in UXGA resolution).

Cheers, I see what you mean about the thickness... doesn't look much thicker than my classic though thinking about it? Guess the speaker on it's crap.
Has anyone come across any custom ROMs for the 48?
