I am playing with the TV-out function on my phone... I went looking all over for a tv out cable, ended up trying my old Zen Vision:M 60gb (the fat one) video out cable, worked perfectly! now i'm wondering if i could have something different display on the TV than on my screen, like doing a power point presentation, and having presenter view on my screen, and the slideshow on the TV. Playing SNES games on the tv, and having just the controller showing on the screen. watching a movie on the tv and having the play/pause slider bar, on the screen. or EVEN having a video on the tv and using my phone for other things at the same time...
tl;dr - does anyone think i can multi-screen with the TV out on my phone, or is it locked to displaying whats on the phone?

Doubtful because the TV-out is a complete copy of the screen.
It does not process anything itself.
Sorry to disappoint.
NOT TRUE, With some devices you can have only controls on the phone screen while watching video on TV...

Your rude/smartass tone is unacceptable, especially for a first post. Act like that and you won't last very long around here.
This will be possible with the next generation chipset (which was announced recently). For now it can not be done.

Really which devices.
I am not trying to be rude. I'm asking this as a serious question.
It's possible over WiFi using DLNA compatible devices or various less universal remote control solutions. None of those have anything to do with the TV out ofcourse.

We could see this feature in the next samsung phone or TAB. I heard that samsung is working now with nvidia for using the Tegra processor. Maybe it'll have a split tv out feature or similar with the one on computers - secondary and primary screen.
@ sargasso : It's not a dumb question lol . I'm playing quake 3 on my phone (even on network with others) and you say it's to much to ask from a phone ?!? These 1 gig phones from totay's technoloy are no simple devices anymore, they can handle allmost anythig and can do actualy a lot of thing that notebooks do. With a dual screen view feature it's not about "if" or "not posible", but when. And "when" is very soon. Remember that not long ago there were notebooks with less hardware than these phones.
Mark my words (love this line from Matrix) ! - Pretty soon we'll see not only a split tv out but a new feature in wich you swipe the picture from your phone toward the lcd tv(via wifi/dlna) just like in the James Bond movie. Anything is posible. Next year the phones will even recieve a dual core cpu.
Yeah I dug up my old tv out cable which came with my N95 and that work perfectly...
I'd prefer hdmi out though.....
Most likely available before H2 - 2011
...a native triple display controller, and on-chip HDMI 1.3a interface.

Yes i may have put it in the wrong forum, i'm sorry, i wasn't sure where to put it.
It is running on linux, and it has the ability to do multiple outputs, so it was just a matter of asking if the hardware could support it.

For tossing files around, I believe there's already an app for that: Hoccer.
Haven't tried it yet, though.
Anyone ever get any info on this. I'm wondering if it's possible to turn the screen of while using tv out, for example when playing a movie. I don't want to shorten my screens life.

Now I found proof of this concept. That is definately something different on both screens. Now we need a way to control this ourselves.

I'd like to know, since Android is an open platform, if it is possible to have TV-OUT function on the HTC Dream or G1 like in Touch Pro. I teach and I use power points and I'd like to be able to project my ppt. Is it a hardware problem or software? I bought the cable for my touch pro, but I am tired of WinMO and I am planning to make the switch.
Thanks.
It's not out of the realm of possibility for Android as an os, but the Dream hardware doesn't have (to my knowledge) any tv-out hardware.
Hmm.. the only output possible would be the mini-usb port. However, I am pretty sure this port does not support a video out.
So it is a hardware issue. Well, maybe the G2 fixes it.
Thanks..
Mm, it doesn't support video out, as of yet I mean. There is a possibility in the near future it may be able to. However, the signal would need to be converted somehow into the usual composite video most sources use. Then there is the issue that the G1's hardware puts out a video resolution of 320x480, and most TVs are HD now at 1080 x 920 resolution.

Its actually different from the G1 hardware. The G1 has an ARM6/7 processor while the zeebo has an ARM11 (I wish we had this in the G1) processor.
ahh okay, how much different would the code be? since the g1 chipset and zeebo support tv out, would it be possible to use the zeebo sdk to figure out how the system calls would need to be executed?
edit : wikipedia list the g1 as an arm11
my bad haha, yeah arm11 processor, but the supported instruction set is arm6.
Been doing some research on this... please be gentle, just thinking out loud.
I'm fascinated by the capabilities of the G1 w/ Android. I'm also very excited about where Android may end up w/ the release of new phones and netbooks in the future and what the great minds of xda-dev will do with it all.
I've been applying some gugl-fu to the idea of routing output to tv via miniusb. The results of said "fu" have led me to some interesting discoveries.
This page has some interesting info:
Original in French: http://android-france.fr/2009/05/11...e-du-htc-dream-une-porte-ouverte-aux-hackers/
Same page via Google Translate in English: http://tinyurl.com/m3rsoe
That page also has a pic of a hacked miniusb -> VGA cable as well.
So I applied some "fu" to G1 miniusb to VGA cable and found this for the HTC Touch Pro/Pro2: http://www.inkino.co.uk/zen/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2460
From what I understand the hardware supports TVOUT but Android either does not take advantage of the feature at this time AND/OR the hardware capability is there but crippled/disabled during manufacture AND/OR all the hardware capabilities are there but Android does not support the feature and if it did output would be practically unusable because of limitations on developers put in place by Google's dev team...
So which is it?
Is development actually an option at this time?
If an app can be created to facilitate TVOUT or a build created to take advantage of the hardware capabilities will we simply need to purchase one of these cables, or hack together a miniusb to VGA cable?
And, if all this is possible, will video output be good enough to stream vids from LukLuk or the SDCard to a TV or will bandwidth limit us to simpler tasks equivalent to powerpoint presentations and slideshows?
I'm having a lot of fun installing the new builds and adding HERO apps to JFK builds etc. and am impressed by how well the xda-dev community works together. The TVOUT function has simply piqued my interests and I felt compelled to ask.
Thanks for any answers you guys may have. - Cheers!

Or keyboard...hadnt really thought about it before, but i used to use a keyboard for gaming on my PC all the time. Anyone doing this?
So i went ahead and ordered an iControlPad and I will report back here what it can or can't do on my VZW gb tab.

Edit: just read in the comments for the 'Bluez IME' app which supports all of the controllers noted in the subject that it supposedly does work on a galaxy tab 7. Guess i will know first hand soon enough
yes! I thought I was the only one, I use my bluetootg keyboard witg enulators, and other games? Love playing doom and prince of persia in ADOSBOX. I recomend trying this out, thinkgeek has a pretty nice keyboard case for it which I use for gaming and typing this post, it does require getting used to. (i really recomend trying adosbox, it is great for classics. all Ive been doing the past few day.)
I was starting to wonder if anyone else had any interest in the subject. Still waiting for the shipment. Will probably look into keyboards soon...I would love to try some descent on my tab.

I ordered an iControlPad too and waiting for it to arrive. After it does I'll post an update on how it is. I plan to use it with fpse, gameboid and n64oid. I have heard that not many android games support buttons via bluez-ime.
My iControlPad came in today. Watch for a post of my impressions this weekend, maybe a few pictures while I'm at it.

Sorry, no time to make a youtube video, but the steps are simple enough.
Once you have a control pad and the free BluezIME app that is available from the market, you basically just treat the ICP (iControlPad) as an extended set of hardware keys in the game/app that you would like to control with it. This means that the ICP is not actually recognized as an ICP, but in simple terms, as a set of 20 hardware keys. Once your pad is recognized and connected through the BluezIME app you just go into the custom button settings to assign what the function of each button is. I did this successfully with both FPse and snes9x EX, and I am certain that many of the emulation apps would be able to do this.
I was not able to get any applications that natively support the ICP to recognize it as such, which I am assuming is because of the restrictions/limitations that Samsung has built into the bluetooth protocols of their devices. EDIT: latest version of FPse did recognize the ICP without BluezIME! BUT, the fact that I was able to work around this with the BluezIME app and custom button settings in my apps of choice makes me very pleased with the purchase.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not much to say about the product itself. It seems well built and I noticed no delay in the controls or problems with gaming situations that require pressing multiple buttons at once. It is about the size of an old NES controller and has 20 programmable buttons when used with the BluezIME app.
My biggest gripe with playing emulators on my tab in the past was that button combinations were very difficult with on-screen controls, and your hands just get in the way of the experience. This device eliminates both of those glaring problems. If you are into emulation, skip the wiimote drama because this is what you are looking for. Personally, I feel that this little device adds a ton of value to my tab.
I got one too and its great. Also I can use it with other devices like laptops and desktop pcs.
Can anyone confirm if this works with the wifi only version (p1010)? I received mine yesterday, and can't get it to connect. I've tried blueZ as well as some of the other modes for the device. Maybe you guys could help?
So I'm hoping people with a little more knowledge than me in PCs would help me figure out this issue I have at the moment with my computer.
Is there any way to block an app/program from detecting your external display? In other words, still use my Vizio as a monitor, yet fool my computer to think it's my laptop's actual monitor?
The reason I'm trying to figure this out is so I can use the Optimum for Laptop app. It only runs on laptops and will not work if it detects that you're using an external display. I have no choice at the moment to use one, since the screen on my Dell Inspiron is shattered. Any tips/advice is appreciated
Try mirroring your display instead of just choosing the external as your main display. Therefore you have both the display on the laptop and on the external screen. If you choose the external as your main it cuts off the feed to the laptops screen. You will probably have to leave the lid open or go into your power settings and
choose do nothing when you close the lid. Hope this helps.

Yeah I say mirror the display as well. If that works, just toss a black shirt over your laptop screen so the light doesn't leak through.
I tried that, but then it would not stream the channel. Like it knows.....
Thanks for replying though. I appreciate it.
try enabling only the external monitor (if you haven't already) using your video card/driver software. i know this is possible in software like catalyst control center and others.
So here's what happens now. The warning about me using the external display doesn't pop up anymore when I change the display to clone on both monitors. But the channels will not load, unless I unplug the VGA to my laptop. Then the channel will start playing. I'm trying to figure out any way to still use my monitor but at the same time my laptop doesn't detect it.
I have the same exact question as the OP.
Have you found another solution to this? If I clone my display, the max resolution to my monitor is much less than I want it to be (monitor is capable of 1920 x 1080).
Thanks.
I have the same issue has there been any progress?

do i need to be a member to reply to this? (I guess so lol) Optimum STILL doesn't support external display of their optimum for laptop, or thru the optimum app. It's RIDICULOUS! I subscribe to the basic tv but have no cable boxes since I only subscribed to lower my entire bill as I got a promotion for a year. I watch tv now and again on my iphone 6 or on my rca 10" tablet. I have antenna and get all the major channels but when it's really crappy weather out I will watch on tablet or phone. Would be nice if I can cast the picture to my 40" tv instead of watching on my iphone 6. Now that Altice has bought Optimum and doubled our speeds maybe they'll support external display. (But I doubt it....)

You can probably call up samsung and send them the serial number to make sure it's real or not.
If it's the real one, I keep reading all over the forums that the format of the hdd/pen drives might be the issue. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find them. This was usually when people were buying the 64GBs cards and had to reformat them to get them to work. I'm assuming it might be a similar issue.

Tv reports 1080/30p. Using Maxthon browser in full screen mode and set for smallest letters is a pleasure using on bigger screen. Most (all?) applications are not optimized to utilize higher resolution output and simply mirror phone screen. Netflix app has a problem with smart dock. When video is played in full screen mode - hdmi is formated 4:3 instead 16:9. Other video apps output in correct ratio.

Hopefully this isn't mentioned some where else, tried searching around. But, I'm using note 9 with hdmi, a lot of games and even some apps look low quality. From what I can tell the UI of Dex looks normal and a few others things like web browser stuff. Even a small handful of games appear to run with no quality issues, and most non-game apps. But when I switch to screen mirroring, everything looks perfect, so I don't get the issue. I also had an extra question about screen mirroring, is there a way I can have the screen off or show all black? That way I can play games on my monitor without leaving the screen on? Let me know if y'all need any example images of games looking low quality, to be clear, a game will look low quality even "full screen" in dex while in screen mirror it looks extremely sharp and high quality like it's on the phone screen itself.
Hi
What type of USB-C to HDMI adapter you have?
If it is not Samsung DEX then picture quality is poor, by purpose. Samsung wants you to buy/use their adapter.
I have few cables/adapters but full resolution works only with DEX stand I bought. It was made for Note 8.
Screen mirroring works with any cable.
Go to shop and test...
My very old Samsung S2 and even Note 3 accepts any adapter.
Good luck.

Seems from both comments, official dex cable will be needed. My monitor is 1080p, shows its on 1080p in settings, picture is full screen. Browser looks normal, videos like youtube play what appears to be perfect quality, which is why im so confused.
Could you try a game like pokemon masters ex? Its one of the ones thatll show normal size, but looks low quality, very pixely, then switch to mirroring to see if theres a difference? Cause if i switch to mirroring it looks how it should on my 1080p monitor.
Thanks for the help so far. If swapping adapter is the solution then awesome, i really want to use dex and like using it at the same time haha.
Edit-- What type of USB-C to HDMI adapter you have?
Its an 8 in 1 hub from amazon and brand is bqypower, goofy name but yeah. It has hdmi and vga out, tried both and got the same results.

I have the official Samsung DeX cable: https://www.jarcomputers.com/Samsung-DeX-Cable_prod_CABPTSAMSUNGEEI3100FBEGWW.html
I tried 3 games that I have on my phone and ran them both in DeX mode and in Screen Mirroring via the cable. Below are screenshots of the DeX mode running these games. Obviously I couldn't take pictures while in Screen Mirroring but the quality was the same in both. My phone is set to FHD+ and my TV has a FHD resolution screen as well.
Like on 8 ball, in Dex mode it looks rough and pixely. Then when I switch to screen mirroring it looks a lot better, even compared to it on Dex in full screen. Is this really because of the cable not being from samsung? Here's an image of the balls in full screen on dex. Just seems weird how it looks better in mirroring compared to dex on the same cable. Even the mouse in dex mood looks a little off compared to mirroring which it looks like a high def mouse with no rough edges or anything.

Don't really know as I've never had a quality problem here. But also never tried any other HDMI to Type-C cable so can't be sure if that's the cause either.
