Looking for the perfect rom.... For me. - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Don't worry I'm not asking "Which rom is the best". After all thats an insult to developers and its a matter of preference anyway. I'm asking which one meets my needs or most of them anyway. I'm looking for a rom with the following:
*No annoying "android is upgrading" on every boot
*All animations enabled
*wifi tethering unlocked
*ability to disable lte and use hspa+/Edge only
Other things that would be nice but not as important:
*bloatware removed (I can do this with TB anyway if rooted)
*ASOP notification bar theme, no more gb looking icons (probably can do this with uot kitchen dunno)
*"visual voicemail" button removed from dialer Google voice button instead? (Is this possible? If anything just linking gvoice to it would work)
*Sense 4 launcher or just a modified 3.6 launcher with Widgets in the app drawer (I don't think it exists but I know I could just as well use apex or nova but I love the sense Widgets)
*removed recent apps from notification area (whats the point? I can just hold home anyway)
*configurable quick settings
Also ROM has to work on the HTC vivid on at&t. Quick question too does permaroot mean permanent forever? Like there's no way back? Also I noticed the vivid tools and the rooting ics guide which one should I use? And lastly do I need to achieve s-off or is rooting enough? I apologize for all the questions but I came from the captivate and its stock with an unlocked bootloader and almost designed for rooting and custom roms
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

So you would defenitely want either PGs rum float or (just Google: androidninjas)
Or wild child's from. Google wcxxperia...
As for permroot , it means it is permanent you want loose root on reboot or power downs. But not permanent as in never go back. There are a hand full of ways to go back...
Try using the super guide first. I think In the guide he puts a link to his toolkit. But since you aren't really familiar with this use the super guide. It goes step by step.
Hope this helped.

How about you read all of the ROM's threads, test each one out and see which one you like.

I've been reading up on them but its a bit confusing ATM.

you can't go wrong with the Virtuous Inquisition rom or the wajee ones, search the development thread, there are like 5 new roms.

Yeah gotta admit with the great one x reviews and the gs3 launch I was starting to regret getting this phone but seeing the recent surge in development makes me feel more confident. I originally didn't plan on rooting and installing a custom rom but I kept my captivate stock for all of 2 weeks and its killing me how limited I am to customizing plus I loved using my cappys wifi tether with my flyer and lte is eating my batteries and killing my phone when using Pandora over Bluetooth! If anything I may just root soon so I can tweak the phone
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

Sounds like either the virtuous or Wajee's from would be a good choice for you. They are ports of sensation rooms so all three current ones have hspa/edge connectivity only from what I've seen. They are very slick and quick with running either the stock ics launcher (wajee's unsensed) or apex (virtuous). There might be a few bugs still being worked out but those are the closest to what you seem to require at the moment!
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

Yeah I was looking at both of those. Does hspa+ aka fake 4G work?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

as far as I can tell all signs points to yes. I ran some speed test and they are holding close to what I got stock in my non-lte town
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

Cool. Only thing is I do love the sense widgets and the lockscreen shortcuts. Guess you can't have it all.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

The unsensed beta has lock screen shortcuts, but no HTC Widgets tho unfortunately. That's a sacrifice for such a nice rom. But with beautiful widget you don't really need the HTC Widgets.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

Yeah I got beautiful Widgets and fancy Widgets actually. Bought fancy Widgets when I got my captivate and beautiful Widgets was on sale for 10 cents during Google's 10 days of 10 cent apps. They do a great job no doubt but one thing they can't do is animations. But they do have an advantage with the ability to link custom weather apps because honestly the sense one is meh.
The unsensed one must of borrowed that from cm. CM7 had the rings lock screen where you could add a third ring and add up to 4 shortcuts with it. What is the aosp ics lock screen like? The way Google made it sound was lock screen shortcuts are built in. Honestly as long as I can access my camera I'm good.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

From what I can tell its pretty much the same lock screen then. Camera/phone/SMS/unlock from that screen.one bonus too is lock screen control for music apps . Rdio/slacker is so much better now
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

Sounds good I'll give them a try when I get time to sit down with this thing. My flyer took a bit to get it rooted, lots of adb commands etc. Don't think the vivid will be as bad as the flyer doesn't have a GUI to use.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

Rooting the phone is quite simple. Even doing the s-off is fairly a easy process when it comes down to it. Follow the guide and you should be fine. If you need help post here or jump on the irc, a lot of smart people hang out there and love helping out.

Wait, they don't have LTE? Why would that be the case, since it is using a Holiday radio? I personally haven't tested it, as I don't live in an LTE area.
Also, Virtuous is using Nova, which I instantly replaced with the stock ICS launcher.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA Premium App

I don't even really care about lte now. Only real use of it is to show off your download speed to your friends. But it eats your battery alive and causes overheating issues and just pointless anyway with a 2 gig data cap. When I went on vacation a coupled weeks ago I went out of lte coverage and battery life was worlds better and I was still getting 12 meg down. 12 meg is what my home internet is so hspa+ is all you really need.

As far as I've seen the ports don't have late because they are straight ports. These roms don't have lte support built in. You can confirm this by going in the dialer and typing *#*#4636#*#* and under phone information. The option for late isn't available. But like the op said. Its mostly not required while using your phone 90% of the time. It just uses your data a lot faster and doesn't really change much else in your web browsing experience.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA

Hey one quick question. I was looking at the Junopeterbear S-off and it looks kind of complicated...wire trick? Do I need to even concern myself with that or is just unlocking the bootloader and obtaining root access enough? ugh... I have to take the phone apart? Man I don't even wanna mess with that. Hopefully they'll have an ADB method or cwm flashable method in the future. I'll just stay away from that!
Edit: yeah sure enough the screw on the panel I need to pull off has a sticker that says "void" on it. I don't want to void my warrenty. Obviously flashing a rom technically does that but only if they can proove it! Might be different if I ever even once made it through a contract without having to swap my phone out for various hardware failures (Captivates speaker broke swapped it out and 3 months later the power button died on the refirb)

According to cruzin_cruising, the Virtuous ROM still has LTE support. I don't really know, since I don't live in an LTE area.

First Day with Gingerbread Rom

Installed Gingerbread yesterday, and would like to share my experience of the first day.
Here are a few things I noticed.
1. Overall speed of phone is better then froyo. My phone used to lag sometimes on froyo, but on gingerbread it's flying.
2. Battery life is better then before. Definitely better. Last's around 3-4 hrs longer than froyo.
3. One issue that might be in my phone is that movies played with a slight lag, but GB rom fixes this issue as well.
4. HTC Sense 2.1 is good, slight improvement. The new app drawer is better, organizing everything in All Apps, Frequent and Downloaded.
...will continue to bring updates as days progress.
Will also try to post some screenshot or video if possible soon.
How did you manage it get GB on an S-On, in India?
How is the GPS?
Lol. Not functioning on Vibrant. Works fine on Captivate. Ghey right....

Yes ... The update really is awesome

To install GB on S-ON IS i india, just create a Goldcard using this method:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-make-gold-card-for-htc-desire-hd/
Then download the official ROM from the Shipped Rom Section here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033922
I used the Virgin ROM.
And flash as normal. Worked flawlessly here.

Mine shipped with GB as i got mine through Optus Australia. Weird for us to be ahead in the android software..... Aussie carriers are usually slow

Now that you've mentioned it, i tried other HTC widgets too.... result.... The people widgets some times goes blank... takes a few secs to load the people I have added to the people widget. However, working fine for past 8-9 hrs now.
It's so tempted to install this RUU. Just saw an article in Android Advices regarding rooting the new Galaxy S II, and its so easy. Why couldn't HTC do the same.

Would like to know if the keyboard swap faster when you rotate the phone when typing I found it pretty slow in 2.2
I want to upgrade my IS to GB too. But I want to backup the current ROM. Is there any way to do it? My phone has S-on.

Curious about my new project? [UPDATED May 29]

UPDATE ON MAY 29, 2012: I'm sorry guys.
I won't be releasing my project. I'm actually stopping the effort to port the rom. I can't do it, it just is way too complicated to complete.
This means, until I decide to work on something new or find something worth porting, I am not developing for the D3 or Droid Bionic anymore.
I won't be picking up Motoblur + Android 4.0.4 either, so eliminate that question as well.
I hope you guys won't get mad.

I'm all for options, but Sense just isn't my cup of tea. Not to mention it would be Gingerbread based (I don't believe any HTC device currently has ICS), and many people (myself included) would see it as a step back.

What exactly has you hung up, as far as ICS is concerned (just a question)? Everything works, with the exception of face unlock, and some spotty bluetooth issues. Granted, I'm not overly familiar with the GSM builds and their respective bugs, but most people really seem to be enjoying the 4.0 builds...

it's will be great if it contains a RTL & BIDI languages as well.....
I'm definitely interested. I prefer having full functionality for my phone, so the ICS ROMs are out for me for now, and I prefer the GB ROMs to be unthemed. It seems that all of the themed ROMs have something that I think looks mediocre (bad fonts that make it difficult to tell normal from bold, or that flow badly; on screen button elements that do not work right; mediocre battery indicators on the status bar; unattractive notification pull-downs; etc.)

Here's an update:
This rom is a pain in the ass. It really is. So the chances of me completing this, with school and other things have gone down to about 20% from 70%.
But here are some details:
Gingerbread 2.3.6
Later Software from another device (I'm not naming it)
No GSM compatibility
Sorry GSM users, there isn't a way GSM will work on the rom until the device I'm porting this from is updated later this year.

Are we near the end?

Well, i just have a feeling that the total happy modding flashing days of the IncS is coming to an end
Every day i check these forums & the quantity of posts have diminished, not much development either.
i guess the last stop would be the ICS official release (if it happens) post which am certain there won't be any further updates for the IncS...
the shelf life of the phone seems just to be over a year...
all good things must come to an end
and that makes me quite unhappy
Well, if you saw the evo 3d had no action, and the ics leak brought it back to life
Hopefully that will happen to us, but it seems more and more people are selling and buying something else :/
Still, looking forward to a stable sense 4
Once ics is released things will pop back to life. No one wants to spend time on an old os. It's much much simpler to mod a official release than a ported one. All I want is a senseless version of the official with trebuchet and ill be happy.

True, but I bought a HTC over a samsung initially because of not only sense, but the fact that it has more ram. 768mb is more than enough for ics
Whats the "Plus" in sense:
-The animations that you wont get in any other Android mobiles like Samsung, LG etc..
-Launcher looks
- Extras like Weather animations. (That made my friend who has a S2 jealous of me)
- HTC sense integration with internet.
- There are many other plus point in sense.
Minus: It makes the phone lag sometimes. But i never experienced the lag. I see my phone lagging only when i try to play a 720p movie and i try to skip some scenes it takes some time to load which didnt happen in Sense-Less ROM's.

Can you tell me why you are not rooted. I'm just curious. I've seen a lot of people that say they are not rooted and or rooted but not running a ROM. I've done it a lot on my gnex but have not found the need to do it on this phone.

rooted but still using stock ROM
After rooted you can install so many useful apps (e.g. CWM Recovery, Titanium Backup Pro, Market Enabler, Root Explorer........)
Everything is good here, so why put development software on it.?
There's no reason to not root, or at least unlock the bootloader, when you first get the phone. It'll save you a ton of hassle down the road should you ever decide that you want or need root

Ordered my Nexus 4 on Nov. 13th. Still waiting.
Yeah I'm unlocking the bootloader as soon as it arrives, I'll probably leave it stock for a bit but my last 3 devices I bought with the intention of leaving them stock, then decided to root later, and 3 devices I lost data on. So yeah just unlock it when you get it to leave the option open

I'm not rooted because:
1) I have no need to be. Stock does everything I want it to do.
2) Having root doesn't allow some apps to work such as Google Movies & TV.
3) I got sick of flashing ROMs, making backups, and restoring everything after a wipe.

Oh nice. I'm glad they fixed that.
This is going to be my first android phone as I'm coming from blackberry and I was doing some research as to rooting my device. That's probably the direction I am going to go but I just had one question. What are the potential drawbacks of rooting your device? I read that some apps don't work such as banking apps and things along those lines. Just wanted to get all the possible information. I'm located in Canada, if that relates to any location specific apps.
Thanks
EDIT: Found some tutorials and threads, thanks
I did unlock the bootloader and I'm rooted, no ROM. I to got tired of flashing and making back ups and redoing my home screen multiple time a week if not every day. That's fun for awhile. But for me all the Roms are all the same for the exception of a few things. My phone runs great and I do get very good battery life. I can understand why some do it but I think android is at that point to where it does and have everything I want. I'm even thinking about unrooting my phone. Haven't needed any thing that requires root yet. I did have the display app for awhile for my screen but I've not used it that much and have not noticed that my screen is slightly yellow. My flickster app won't work when I'm rooted so I think I might unroot it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I stayed unrooted for 8 days which is actually a record with any Android device. I liked stock and had no problems with it, but there were just a few features in Cyanogen that I love that aren't available in stock. And they're actually small things such as the volume toggles and the percentage number for battery. But they were worth it. So far my Cyanogen experience has been just as smooth as stock, so there really haven't been any drawbacks. I'm also using the Faux kernel which seems to have improved the wakelock problem the device was having on the stock kernel. I was able to get somewhere around 20 hours of battery life yesterday when I was getting around 12 on the stock kernel. I still haven't calibrated the display to my likings yet, but I'll get to that. Needless to say, I'm really enjoying having a Nexus 4.
I liked rooting my vivid because sense sucked, but I went with a aosp ROM and was very happy. Though, what I like more is messing with new software updates (official) and not being rooted just makes that easier to download. There's nothing I miss from rooting. Everything I did was to make the phone as smooth running as possible and that's what I got now.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Not rooted. The entire reason I rooted my old GS2 was to get AOSP on it. This has it in its purest, best form stock.
I root because I want to block ads, use titanium backup, Franco Kernel, AOKP (I have my menu and search button back plus the nav bar ring has more options than just google now). I use TWRP for backups in case I mash my phone and Google doesn't have images up yet... I can at least restore mine LOL. I use lots of tasker tasks with root. Use Datasync to auto backup and restore games and other app data on each device (not just when flashing ROMs. I mean I play a game and put down phone pickup tablet and data is already synced on there.). There's just so many things to do with it!
I will eventually, and most likely roll to CM, but until that time I just have no need for it.

Having decided the s4 still suffers from a laggy touchwiz from playing with 2 store demo models last week, and being impressed by the ones smoothness in another store; I'm seriously considering buying a one having had a galaxy S1, 2+3.
I have a few questions if people don't mind answering:
1. I'm not sure if I like blink feed and read you can't disable it. Would using a different launcher or will only a modified rom sort this?
2. Does adding a few widgets to your home screen cause any lag in scrolling?
3. Anyone had an s3 and can tell me what battery life is like in comparison?
4. I like smart stay, I gather there's an app that does similar. How well does it work on the one?
5. Is rooting as easy and safe, ie hiding for warranty returns?
6. Any previous s3 users really noticing the contrast difference ie not so good blacks? I've had amoled for 3 years now
Sorry it's long but thanks if you can answer.

1) A different launcher or rom would remove BlinkFeed.
2) No lag. I have 6 screens and 15+ widgets and I don't see any lag.
3) I've never had an S3, but looking at the data, the HTC One battery is better than S3 but not as good as S4.
3. Check the anandtech comparison between the one and s4, they have the one ahead. The browsing time is excellent on the one.
4. Is smart stay the feature that stops the screen timing out if you're looking at it? If so, it's built into sense.

At the moment, there is no way to disable BF on Sense. I don't know of any ROM that has this yet either.
A new launcher will remove it though (and enable more than 5 screens)

Can't comment.

Easy and safe yet. But hiding for warranty?
Once you unlock the bootloader, it will say TAMPERED in HBoot. There is no way around this as of yet. If this voids warrenty, I guess it depends on your carrier, or how HTCs view on it.

I had a SNS before, it had a AMOLED screen, but obviously not as good as the S3. Personally I haven't noticed anything bad that makes me not like the screen. It could be that it doesn't bother me/I don't use it for applications that require top grade screens/the jump from SNS to ONE is big enough to shadow the display technology.
This is really subjective, you'll have to try them out your self.

SmartStay is not available on sense. The phone will turn off whether you look at it or not.
I think, this is the only feature I'm missing.

Ahh, so there isn't a sense equivalent? I actually meant a 3rd party app on play store, looking at comments though they all seem to crash the camera doh!
