I'm not sure if this is the same as the well known "Nexus One 3G problem". I'm running CyanogenMod 6. I have been having occasional trouble on my home carrier (WIND Mobile Canada) where every once in a while, even though the 3G or H icon appears, I can't access anything and when I try the ping test under Testing/Phone information it fails.
The only way I'm able to get the Internet back is to disable mobile data (via widget) and re-enable. Then it lasts again for a while.
I'm currently on vacation in the US and using a T-Mobile SIM. It seems this problem is even worse on their network. Sometimes I only get maybe 2-5 minutes of a 3G connection before it freezes out like this. I've been leaving it on EDGE just to keep it stable, but this is obviously not an ideal solution.
About two weeks ago I started trying nightly builds of CM6 as I was interested in the FM Radio, and I have noticed this issue much more since then. It might be related, but it could also be a coincidence, and I don't want to start messing around with multiple ROM flashes while on vacation if that's not the problem in the first place. Any ideas on what to do?
Thanks
Charles
its a bug with 2.2.1,my nexus does this too. it will get stuck with the data up arrow lit up when the data stops working, turning data off and back on fixes it. there is even a post in the google bug tracker about it. I know for sure it happens in both FRG83 and FRF91,but I'm not sure exactly when it started. 2.1 roms for the N1 don't do it,and my g1 doesnt on 1.0-2.1,but on froyo roms it does exactly the same thing as the nexus.
I hope someone (google or a dev) can fix this, because its really annoying. my g1 is back to donut because its faster, and I'm considering going back to a 2.1 rom on the N1. I've confirmed the issue on ChromaticDream (g1),CM Nightlies (I've tried 198,200,201,202,203,220),CM6.0.0,Enomther's TheOfficialNexus (10/11/10),and a few others.
I thought I was the only one who noticed this bug. Does it occur in the stock (non-rooted) versions of 2.2.1 as well?
Just an update, although I do periodically experience this on my home provider (WIND Mobile Canada), it turns out that T-Mobile is having 3G issues in Portland this exact week and everyone's experiencing it. So the fact that 3G is nearly unusable on my trip is TMo's fault and not Android's.
UPDATE: I downgraded my radio to the official froyo radio (4.0-something lol) and my timeout problems are no more so far....
I have the same problem but with since I'm using nightlies 215 the problem is gone (i'm using 508 radio)
but lately I'm using nightlies 221 and 223 and the problem is back
I settled on 204 for vacation because I didn't want to fiddle with the ROM 10 hours away from my desktop comp! Now that I'm home, keep this thread updated with which builds seem to have a stable 3G connection.
I just flashed 225 with 512 radio and I can say this build is stable, no more intermittent connection lost. 225 nightlies is fast as well
Good to know. I'm on the 5.08 radio; is there a significant difference with 5.12?
Just wondering how many of you have updated the leaked 5.7.893 weather you were bone stock or rooted. Is it worth updating or should I wait for the OTA? I have no intention of rooting at this time.
Interesting to see who is going to wait and who took the plunge.
I'm rooted and rocking the 5.7.893 and loving my Bionic now. Pretty much fixed all my problems except the bluetooth skips, but I'm hoping the final OTA cures that.
Im rooted and at 5.7.893 love it.

If I were to update to 5.7.893 will I be able to get the final OTA whenever that comes around? I don't want to root so I just want to make sure that I will get the final OTA without having to do something other than accepting it.
I don't think anyone can be 100% certain that when the final OTA drops, we'll just be able to accept it and install. If we do have to take some steps to get it, I'm sure the fantastic bionic devs will figure them out. If you're having big problems, install it. If you're not, don't. For my Bionic the update was the best thing I could have done for it.

Listen to Bionicblue's advice. If you have problems that interfere with phone usage, either return it...or do the leak. If you do not, wait for the update path.
There is no assurance using the leak will be able to return to the update path without doing something. Generally updates are tied to some kind of stock. Sure, the awesome devs on XDA do get around to the updates and do wonderful jobs. So root and futurecooked roms will be an option.
But, if you can wait, wait. If you just gotta jump in...do it with a smile on your face...not that one...a real smile. I've been here going on 5years. Never once has there been a failure.
Stock 5.7.893 with webtop. still ocationally getting no network warnings but I think someone said that was a sim card problem and that a sim replacement fixes it.
I did

I did the three updated ending with 5.7.893 and i have to say i am starting to love my phone the way that i had hoped i would when i first got it. It's so much faster and more stable than before. And now i can enjoy having 4g. That's working so much better for me now.
Is anyone here having the dreaded no 3g connectivity issue? Just took the plunge and updated from 5.5.893 to 5.7.893 with webtop rocking Shift3r 2.3.1 ic3 blurry everything was last night now getting no 3g or icon stays white. 4g our blazing fast. Hopefully I can get a new Sim card and be fixed
I did the update from stock to 5.7.893 and love the change. Camera is wicked fast now and over the phone seems a lot more stable. I have the frequent data drops but I had that before the update (tried all of the recommended fixes with no real improvement).

I just started having this problem yesterday, too. I am on 5.7.893 stock rooted +webtop. 3G connects, sometimes, but never turns blue (what is that, getting an IP address or something?) so there is no connectivity. 4G works just fine.

At first I thought it was just a Verizon issue, but my daughter's LG Ally seems to be working just fine on the 3G.
Do you think they're blocking the new radio, perhaps? I would've thought more people would be reporting problems on this forum if that was the case.
I really don't think it's a SIM card issue, because the SIM card is for 4G. The CDMA radio inside the phone is what controls the 3G, to my knowledge.
I'm trying to restore back to Liberty 3 (based on 5.5.886) but obviously that will not downgrade my radio firmware, so I really don't know what that will fix. I will post back with results of that.
EDIT: Restoring back to Liberty 3 on 5.5.886 didn't work. Going to try stock fresh of 5.7.893 and see, but something tells me this is a Verizon issue with the Bionic. Luckily most of the VZW reps have Bionics so they should be reporting the problem.

I talked to a Verizon rep and she said all LTE phones have the connectivity problems and have been slow fixed and that it is a software issue and not the SIM or hardware or verizon.
She also stated that Motorola phones when you pull the battery you should leave it out for a minimum of 2 minutes per Motorola or you are not really fixinf the problem just post poning it when a battery pull is required

So it is a software problem that they're rolling out OTA updates, or that we should try to solve this software problem by doing a 2 minute battery pull? I have kinda been afraid to ask a rep since I have rooted and installed these OTA leaks. With the new OTA that blocks root, I feel like there is some super nerd in the back room just trying to **** with us for getting off stock.
I'm stock, unrooted and installed the leak several days ago. I concur with the feedback given in this thread. My phone is fast and stable and I haven't had a single data drop (I'd only experienced dropped data once or twice since launch day).
The problem I'm chasing now is fringe signal hopping and the leak did not address it. What I'm seeing is that my wife's thunderbolt will easily hang on to a weak 4G signal as my bionic flips to 3G. This isn't a huge deal for me as it only happens a few places in my home yet it's still frustrating. The phones will sit side by side on the same coffee table both with 4G connections and suddenly the bionic flips to 3G.
I'll give credit where credit is due. HTC's latest gingerbread update on the bolt along with a mature radio version has made it a solid phone. Battery life on the bolt is now every bit as good as it is on the bionic. I wouldn't go back to it but it's nice not having to troubleshoot problems on the wife's phone. It just works.

Sometime's something obvious is overlooked, if it's a night time issue verify via battey & Data manager/ battery mode is not on nighttime saver, as most custom roms come with this as the default

Thanks. Night mode was on, but it wasn't the culprit. I changed it to Performance Mode. Data Saver is also already unchecked. Background data is on, Data roaming is on. The 3G is "connecting", and even in Phone Status it says it's connected, but the icon never turns blue.
If you aren't sure what I mean by turning blue, here's what usually happens when the phone changes connection modes. It is consistent through 3G, 4G, and Wifi.
For example's sake, I take it out of airplane mode, then this is what happens.
3G appears next to the cell signal icon. It is white.
4-5 seconds later it turns blue and you can now browse and sync, etc.
Same thing happens with wifi and 4G. The problem here is the 3G never turns blue. It just stays white and no apps can browse.

Did absolutely nothing and it just resolved itself. I think mine was an issue with the Verizon towers and/or network. Hope yours was that easy, too.
luckily mine was that easy too. I texted a friend at vzw and he said he never heard of the issue (obviously since he doesn't fart around with rooted phones and OTA updates that aren't released yet). I told him I was going to come by and grab a new Sim card and last night I tried disabling 4g again just to see what would happen and sure enough 3G kicked in, turned blue, and everything was A okay. Maybe the update just needed a day to settle down?

The official OTA should fix the $G lte network connection loss when switching between 3g and 4g.
The battery pull is for anytime you need to pull the battery for a problem or to assure you are recieving OTA. She also said that if you pull the battery for the manufactured recommended time your device will find OTA faster if they are rolling them out.
My Droid 4 seems to have issues maintaining a wi-fi connection to some networks.
At home, it will connect and work for a while, but eventually stop passing data. It will still show connected, though. It will stay in this state until I turn wi-fi off and back on again.
At work, it often has issues connecting and will show "authentication problem" even though the credentials are correct. With enough trying, it will eventually connect, but won't stay connected.
iPhone, iPads, PCs, Macs and other types of Android phones work OK on these networks.
My old Droid 3 had the same issue.
On some other wi-fi networks, it seems OK.
What gives?
I'm currently a recent build of CM9, but it did the same when it was stock 2.3.6.

Ugh, me too and it was driving me absolutely crazy. I'm on AOKP now (think the build from a few days ago) and it (WiFi) works perfectly now. I know this, because mobile data keeps dropping (argh) but I'm still getting e-mail, etc (but I can't send MMS at least).
Most days I am in solid WiFi coverage, so I am dealing with dodgy mobile data in exchange for stable WiFi. Anybody know if eclipse fixes this issue?
Edit: I'm glad you made this post so I know I am not crazy. Part of the changelog for the 219 update was a WiFi fix, and I was very disappointed when it didn't seem to help...

I've been on Eclipse since it was first ported and I have never had any data issues on 4G/3G or wifi. But I've only connected to 2 or 3 wifi networks so I could just be lucky there. 4G/3G connectivity is perfect.

Yea, I really do have to check Eclipse out. The only thing holding me back is that I'm getting (what I consider) stupid-good battery life with AOKP. Plus, I just did a factory reset on ICS to fix notifications, which means I just set everything back up
Have you spent any time on Wifi using the stock ROM? I'm lucky to get half an hour of Wifi connectivity before it just dies (but still pretends to be connected). No problem with wireless tethering (AOKP or stock). Sometimes I am convinced they don't actually test these things before pushing them out...

I never had any problem with stock either. I would run it on wifi all day at home on a Saturday and never had any drops. I just set up a new router last running dd-wrt so we will see how that goes.
You should definitely check out Eclipse. You lose a few of the ICS goodies but it's totally worth it in my opinion not to have to worry about data dropping out. Battery life has been phenomenal for me on Eclipse. I've been getting through a whole day with 40% - 50% battery left when I finally plug it in a night.
Just backup up your current ROM in safestrap that way, if you don't like Eclipse, you can just restore your backup and your back on AOKP with everything just as you left it!
I've used AOKP for over a week and I don't recall having wifi issues. Which build were you on? I used nightly 29/4. Now I'm back to stock because of BT and Camera. Other than that I had no issues.

I haven't really tweaked it or anything. No undervolting/underclocking or anything like that. I have the 4G toggle installed and switch 4G off when I'm sitting at my desk at work and I'm connected to wifi when I get home in the evening. I don't do anything special other than that. I am still running version 1.3.7 as a couple of people have reported that 1.3.8 broke auto capitalization and not having that would drive me nuts.
Guess I wasn't clear enough. Both on AOKP 29/4 and stock 219 I encountered no WiFi issues. And I use it a lot. I have to because when I switch to 3G for faster internet I loose audio (GSM 3G not working yet). So what I mean to say is, not sure what your problem with WiFi is or where it's coming from. I ran AOKP for at least a week. And I've been running 219 since I got my phone (except for that specific week that is). Not once has WiFi stopped working or glitched for that matter.
I was trying to update my phone to malladus 2.0 from 12b stock rooted. I must have screwed something up along the way because it was soft bricked. Wouldn't boot and when connected to PC it showed as multiple drives with nothing on them. I was able yo restore with .tot method. Ever since then I can't hold a 4g connection. I tried flashing other radios. And now I'm on xdabbebs 24a ROM. Still the same.
Anyone else know of a similar situation or have any ideas? My only idea left is to try restoring to stock again.
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
*update i found info somewhere online saying to do a factory reset after the tot restoral. I did and kept a 4g connection through the entire night. i just upgraded to 11B (tot restoral is only to 10B) and after doing so i started dropping back to 3g again after about 5 mins of sitting idle. i just tried another factory reset to see if it will help. these factory resets are through the stock recovery btw. if this doesnt work i guess I'll start back to square one and look for a non OTA upgrade path.
I'm having the same issue. I have 3g constantly, but my 4g only works for a short period of time. If I turn on airplane mode and turn it off it connects to 4g for a while, then drops back to 3g. I did the exact same thing you did, soft bricked my phone then downloaded the stock TOT and did OTA upgrades to bring me up to the current Kit Kat software. Any more luck with this?
*Update. I tried the reset with; No change
No luck on my end with the same. I've been through a bunch of things, gone from 12b to 24a and back again, run 4.2 and 4.4 ROMs respectively, and nothing has helped it. As soon as I lose 4G through areas, it just will not pick it back up until I toggle Airplane mode. I hate to do a reset, very much so, but I'm getting to the point where it might be my last resort. I go back and forth through 3G and 4G areas every day, and I can't keep toggling a dozen times every day.
The last Carbon nightly was the most "stable" in that at least the 4G to 3G handoff didn't interrupt data. But still...
And that's assuming it comes back as I write this, because my last attempt at going back to 24A and the Carbon beta, and I lost all data connectivity altogether. No network at all...and of course, not enough posts to ask for help in the Dev section. Gotta love it...
I'm having major trouble lately with my turbo switching from 4G LTE to 1x, 3G, or even no signal or data signal at all. It seems to happen more when it hits 15% and the battery saver comes on. But when I turn battery saver off or hook it up to a charger it doesn't connect back up or do anything. I'm getting really frustrated by this because I cant seem to get my phone to re connect to 4G no matter what I do. I put it in airplane mode and even restart my phone; it wont work no matter what. I think its mostly because of the update to lollipop and its a glitch. I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue and if there's any way to fix it besides sitting there for a half an hour wiping the cache and not being able to use the phone.
I'm not experiencing that. Did it start right after you updated? Have you done a factory data reset since upgrading to the pop? Onethng you could try is going into setting and switching it from the factory global mode to 3G/4g and see if that helps. I haven't ever needed to with the turbo but others have and successfully avaoided doing an FDR. Lemme know if that works. We'll get this figured out.
Well I came from a rooted 4.4.4 so I had to reset it back to the original in rooted 4.4.4 in order to update. So technicly yes I did do a factory reset since the update. No I haven't had any trouble since the update until recently for some reason. I've got a signal booster at my house and wondering if my phone isn't trying to switch between the booster and the actual tower, causing it to take more power which makes it loose connection because it can't decide which one to connect to. But I have perfect 4G signal with the booster so I don't see why it would want to switch.
I wouldn't imagine that it would be the booster since you're signal is solid there, but it could always be a possibility. Have you tried switching from global mode under network settings to CDMA/LTE? That solved all the network issues I used to have with my old Razr Max HD. Also, have you taken the OTA that was pushed yesterday? Some people were seeing an increase in signal strength.
As a matter of fact, I updated right after I posted that comment. I didn't even know there was a update till I was looking at Google now and saw there was a small update out. I havent had any issues with connection since the update. I'll post back here if I do come into problems. Thanks for the help though.
Any time buddy! I sincerely hope that solved the issue!
Well I was using navigation earlier today and for some reason, not only did I completely loose my 4G data but it said I lost GPS to. My maps app continued to run but it didn't look like I was moving on the screen, even though I was. Guess the glitched didnt get completely fixed.
It's almost like it does it just at night and when I'm using a lot of data over 4G.
