Hello. I installed V20B rom with root and installed first item here. While composing SMS, Turkish characters(çğiöşü) took size of 7 characters. I assume this is same for all input areas.(While saving a sim contact I can enter maximum of 15 characters. If I enter a Turkish character this size decreases by 6 characters). How can I correct this issue? Is there an input character encoding setting somewhere? Thanks four your help.

Can confirm this bug. In Spanish languages (there are 4 official) are used the following letters: çüñ and vowels with accent. In some cases if I use some of these letters in a SMS there are lost of 100 or 90 characters in the count down from 160 chars and split the SMS before it’s necessary. Real strange haven’t note this till now!
Have to say I am now using v20Q (out now in Spain), the newest version of Ginger now.
Realy strange behaviour!

Radio will not affect this.
I have just tested this and actually if you use 2 or more characters like úőóü your limit of characters drops from 160 to 70. I'm not entirely sure why this is the case. I'll have a wee look/search and see what I can come up with
I am not sure but...
Tap Menu ---> Tools ---> Options ---> Choose SMS / MMS ---> Check "Use Unicode when necessary"
Good luck and best regards,
Justus

It's very normal in Vietnam. Whenever user types Vietnamese symbols , you will be allowed for sending just 60 symbols.
Hey there,
I have this weird issue since day 0... Every time I try to send out SMS's with some special characters like ~ and ç, the available characters drop to 62, or close (instead of the usual 160). What's even more nerve wrecking is that if you do send the message, the receiver will end up with a bunch of squares or chinese characters. Right now I'm using HTC_IME mod v27 to get around this issue...
Does anyone know why this happen? I read somewhere that it has to do with the encoding used on android's and that most "normal" phones can't decode it. Is there any fix planned?
Thanks
Hi people, i have a problem with my Note.
I just tried to send my first message after my note returned from service. I added my language(Greek) and i noticed a very very annoying issue.
When i write the second character of my sms the 160 character limit reduces to 70.
Does anyone know what the hell is wrong? I have seen this issue before on a different phone, but with my note i never had this issue until now.

You are probablly using some greek character o something like that which is reducing the limit. It is the same when I'm usin polish letters like: "ś" or "ć"
I found the culprit!
My firmware is czech, so i figure it must be some sort of setting.
I read on the internet that encoding of the letters is what occupies more space and this gave me an idea.
i went to sms app, pushed the menu soft button and entered "settings", then i went to "input mode" and checked the setting, it was on automatic.
I tinkered a little bit and i finally changed the setting from automatic to "GSM alphabet".
Problem solved.
Good that it's solved but I had a same problem when I was using BlackBerry Curve 9300. Each message could only contain just 70 characters. It was annoying as 'you know what'!
Sold my curve, got a S2, lost it in 9 days!

Hey thank you.
Thanks for coming back and writing a reply to your own thread too btw. So many people don't do this, they just go "Oh well found what the problem is" and then just leave it at that. Thread dies.
I put in the search (always search before posting) and you just saved me a lot of time of decompiling and recompiling and app
Another Fix
install GO SMS Pro,
go to GO SMS Pro settings --> Advanced --> Send&Receive Settings --> scroll down --> select Split large messages check box --> scroll down --> Select Enable customized SMSC --> Customized SMSC number --> enter your service providers SMSC number.
you can find SMSC numbers for operators in the following link

It does split the large SMS in chunks but those chunks again consists of 160 character. There is no way to set to to be split in 80 character chunks
It is not about the characters. Its about Korean phone SMS limit on GSM. It must be done within the ROM. GoSMS or any app will not be able to bypass the system's limit
The best advice I can give is change your language to English-United States, i once had this issue in xxltc rom.. I don;t know which english(country I chose) but language does seem to increase the word count!

problem solved indeed! except now greek are stuck in CAPS mode and cannot change it no matter what. Grrrrrr samsung xcover 2 and android 4.1.2 JB......any other ideas?
It's an encoding problem
The message size limit for sms is 140 (8-bit) bytes. Normal encoding is a modified 7-bit ASCII ('English'). If you do the math, that gives you the regular 160 character limit. Some less common ASCII characters get encoded as two 7-bit characters.
Outside of that, your ENTIRE message is encoded as 16 bit Unicode.. thus the 70 character limit.
If your phone starts in Unicode, then you are stuck with the 70 character limit.
My phone starts in 7-bit mode and only switches to Unicode If I go outside the 7-bit character set, so I get 160 characters per message unless I use "weird" characters like "ç", "è" or "¤").
When im typing sms it splits messages at 70 characters. I use only english letters, so no special characters. There is no option for changing encoding... does anyone have solution for this?
it seems that capital letters are responible for that...
Using the graphical smileys often seems to be the root cause for that problem. What keyboard language are you using? Perhaps that keyboard layout uses letters that are rendered similar to the ASCII ones but they actually are different unicode characters (e.g. kyrillic).

US keyboard, and no smileys... i'v wrote 2 same messages, one with all small letters (everything ok, 160 char.) and one normal (this is when it splits messages at 70 char.).
"In this case it splits messages at 70 char. And im going crazy!"
"in this case everything is just fine. all 160 char can be used for sms."
Is there any solution how to fix this problem to use all standard characters and have 160 characters?

Check with your network provider- in some cases your provider will restrict the lenght of SMS/text msgs.

provider is not problem here. i have just call them. its the phone... :/
I noticed too that the number of character was small and I think that it's because of capital letter being rendered by using some special ascii-like character which takes way more than one character. But since we all have unlimited texts in my country, I don't really give a ef about it. But I just wanted to let you know that you're definately not alone.
Using the French and the English (US) keyboard.
Sounds like something is causing the phone to want to switch the encoding to Unicode. What are your regional settings?
Also, do you have the Nokia-specific Network+ setting? What is the SMS charset set to?
