[Q] Totally bricked - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I put my build number 1106 captivate into total brick mode trying to go to ICS with odin3 one click.. that was a mistake and it put that into a boot loop. I used a jig and got it into download mode, and used Heimdall oneclick because people all over this site fixed theirs with that method. I didnt know this build number made a difference and now i have the phone-!-computer screen. I can't get it to go into download mode even with three different jigs. I have no idea what to do, and any answers would be appreciated.

Not sure if you tried this already or not but I had something similar happen to me before: A method to get it into download mode is to (while the phone is off) hold only the volume up and down buttons, then, while holding the two buttons down, connect the micro usb cable.
This should bring the phone straight into download mode.

Is this with battery in or out?

You can try either way. I have done it with the battery in. However I don't remember if I did it with or without the battery when I did it when my phone was bricked.
Try it out without the battery first.

Isnt that like doing it the regular way? It goes straight to that screen still..

Jig --- make or buy one.
Check my sig link below for directions on where to look for both.

I've had a similar situation, the download mode screen didn't show but some screen did. I pulled my battery, then I used an odin one-click and held the up and down volume keys and plugged in the usb cable, then my battery. The com lit up on odin, and I went ahead and flashed anyway and it worked.

I remember Adam outin saying that you can flash with phone plus computer screen. It has to do with download mode alternate image. Just flash as if in regular download mode even if Odin doesn't see it

I agree with the previous replies. I don't think your phone is "totally bricked", as you say. I'd suggest trying to flash back to original settings with Odin, after getting into download mode by removing the battery, holding down both volume buttons, and plugging in the USB cable. That method has worked for me several times in the past, and I hope it will work for you. Good luck!
Also, when you get back to original settings, depending on your software version, you may want to update incrementally using Samsung Kies to the software version right before the one you want to flash to, because some devices (perhaps most) will not let you update the firmware from 2.1 (Eclair) right to Gingerbread, for example, without first updating to 2.2 (Froyo).
Again, best of luck. Hope you are able to get it unbricked.

[Q] captivate bricked with no download mode

Hi
first of all thank you for so much info.
I spend more than 10 hours looking for a solution on other posts but can't fins a solution.
my phone is bricked and i am not able to get to the download mode or the recovery. before I bricked it I was able to get the download mode with adb with since i tried odin, i have the phone --!-- computer
I am in canada so returning it would be a hassle. any help would be much appreciated to get to the download mode
thank you very much
Download Odin.
Take out the SIM, SD card, and battery. Launch Odin, replace the battery, and plug the USB cord in, and just press down on the volume up and down buttons.
This should boot it right into download mode, then flash with Odin.
This phone is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to brick.
man, i tried that maybe 50 times no kidding!
still no download mode

Hold the volume buttons first then plug in the usb. Thats what works for me. You have to have odin open first like he said.
just tried and still nothing....

Having Odin open makes no difference if his button combo is not working. Unfortunately some people are not aware that there phone does not have the 3 button combo working.
what is your solution when you don t have the 3 button combo working?
The only thing you can do if there is no way to reach download mode is to contact At&t or samsung and see if they can repair the phone for you.
Have you tried using a different usb cable, someone mentioned that some USB cables dont work right with the captivate, try the one that came with the phone.
I know odin doesnt matter, but if he is going to flash with odin it helps to have it open first is all I meant. As far as that screen and no three button combo I think you are done... bricked... sorry, dont take my word for it though.
I could enter download mode with key combination before applying Cog's Beta5.5...
I've returned my cappy for exchange.
I am trying with the cable that came with the phone. I don't have another one.
I just bought this phone out of ebay. I will give it this week end to try and find a solution.
I really don't see any as of now but we'll see...
I will try return the phone to the ebay seller as i asked him before buying it if you could go into download mode! and he said yes!
man, I hope i find a solution!
what happens when you try and start your phone normally -- boot screen loop, anything?
Can you get into recovery mode?
when I try to start it normal I get the phone--!--computer
I am sure I tried recovery mode without any success. I am telling I spent so much time on this forum that my wife is going to start being jalous
How do you get to recovry mode again? I tried so many things, that I don't remember
you can't get the phone to be recognized on your computer? Could do ADB to boot into download.
But the battery trick should work.
Pull the sim, external sdcard, and battery.
Hold down the volume buttons and plug in the USB
Then jam the battery back in.
It might take a few times to get it.. but it should get into download mode. I just restored mine doing this trick when it was stuck on this screen.
Really we need to have a youtube vid of this technique

Hold down both volume buttons then hold down the power button until the boot s screen flashes two times then release the power button.
BTW - although it is a LOOOOONG video.. this might help folks out:

Not sure if it will help, but I've also read that you should use the actual motherboard usb ports and not a hub or any kind of "external" ports (i.e. the ports on the front of the tower)
i did all that stuff.
I ended up returning it to the ebay seller who will send me another captivate.
thanks guys
My download was working on cog 2.2 beta before i flashed back to stock using odin. Now when I try to enter download mode i just see the charging symbol. So the only thing that has changed is software. Could odin3 remove my download mode? What can i do?
Its been a rough night for me. I did a Nandroid backup which turned out I needed to restore after something else failed. After restore I did not have what I expected.
Anyway, to make a long story short, I ended up in a situation that no matter what I did, I could not get into download mode. Only recovery.
The good news is that after trying several different things, I finally found I had the original base rom I was using still on the SD card (even though I had done a Master Clear). I guess maybe the only thing that will empty the SD card is to format it.
I have no idea what I would have done had I not had a Clockwork zip on there.

[Q] Bricked phone after flashing with ODIN?

This might not be bricked, but if it isn't it must be as close as it can get. I flashed my phone back to stock 2.1 yesterday, and today when I tried to flash to cognition 8.1 it got stuck on "<ID:0/005> boot.bin" for a half hour. I unplugged it, and now my phone is stuck on the picture in the attachment.
- I can't get my computer to even pick it up with USB. Nothing happens at all.
- The only time it turns off is when I hold power, volume up, and volume down. Even then, it immediately boots right back into that picture. Nothing else happens.
- I can't get into download mode.
- When I remove the battery, it goes right back to this screen.
What can I do?
Happened to me earlier.
Do the following to get into download mode:
1) take out battery
2) put in battery
3) hold the vol up and vol down keys, then plug in the USB cord.
It will boot into download mode. Then try do what you were doing.

This hasn't worked before, but I went ahead and tried it again. It still just goes straight to the black screen with that picture in the center.
Hmm.
Well, I'm sure one of the 3 methods posted in the odin3 thread, on how to get to download mode, should work.
For me, it was the volume up and down buttons together, then plugging in the usb. It would turn on automatically and go straight to download mode.
None of the ones from this thread work:

Look under your battery below the serial numder of you phone and see if your batch is 1008. If it is those batches don't go into download mode. Send your phone in for waranty repair.

I don't see 1008 at all. I've booted into download mode before, even using the three button combo, I just can't now.
Would AT&T even cover this? Will they know I was tampering with stuff I shouldn't have?
Have you tried running Odin as administrator? Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for Odin. Keep trying, remove SIM, battery and external, hold the volume buttons only and plug phone in, keep trying, it should work. Blame the OTA for the "brick" and send it for warranty if you can't get Odin to work.

Try doing this.
You know its interesting to see how many times I see people tell you to pull the battery, sim etc. Maybe I'm just lucky, but when I put my phone into download mode I power it off, open odin on my pc, hold down the volume buttons but NOT the power button and plug in the micro usb cable. Works everytime for me even with the PC /!\ Phone screen.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice, kept rebooting and removing my SIM and battery (no SD), changed USB ports, made sure each USB port works... Nothing has worked.
EDIT: The drivers I used were from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Man, I'm not sure.
Either you're doing the button combo wrong.. since you said it worked before, or you're gonna have to send it in for warranty.
Remember don't press the power button. Just hold the volume up, volume down button, and plug in the usb cable
I'm about to go to AT&T for an exchange. Wish me luck.
In the meantime, though, what's the easiest, least-risk of screwing up way to get a brand new captivate on cognition 8.1 with the z4mod?
I would say wait until the CW issues are worked out with BETA9 and just CW flash it. I've bricked two batch 1008 Captivates from Odin freezing mid-flash today. I even flashed DG's 3ButtonFix first, to make sure I'd be able to do a button combo to get back into download mode, and no dice.

Wow that's interesting. I also have a batch 1008 and when I flash with odin it's fine. But after every time I flash to stock jf6 I lose 3 button combo and just reinstall the fix zip using clockwork. Download mode using both volume keys then plug in usb always works for me though even without the fix.

[Q] Phone Bricked, need help with getting into download mode!

Hi all,
My phone is now bricked with the phone--!--pc symbol on bootup, and I tried to search for solutions everywhere but no go. Please please help me with this as I don't have unlimited warranty on this phone... and won't be able to exchange...
So, the root of the problem is that the normal hold down volume + plug in cable OR hold down three buttons until it reboots twice to go into download mode will not work on my phone! nothing happens at all when I try that, (I even tried every single button combination and holding them for a period of time...)
Here is what happened:
I wanted to get Froyo running on my phone, so I tried to follow directions using the Froyo leak.
I tried to get it into download mode when the phone was running and operational. None of the normal methods would work (volume button OR three button combo)
I eventually got it to go into download mode by using adb, and typing command adb reboot download.
adb got my phone into download successfully, i see the shovel, odin sees my phone, i was happy and started the odin process on my computer.
3 hours passed... odin was stuck at DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET message, phone was still showing the shovel
I thought something must have gone wrong and tried to start the process again.
This is where I am now, adb will no longer recognize the phone, and none of the button combinations will get me to download mode, all I see is the phone--!--PC symbol on startup.
I really have tried to search everywhere for a solution to this, but other than the 2 buttons+plug cable OR three button reboot twice, I can't find another way that will either allow me to get into download mode and try odin again, or just do a factory recovery.
Thank you guys so much! I really need some help on this one....
I don't suppose your battery is dead? Something to try - put the phone on your charger for about half an hour, then take the battery out for about 5 minutes. Make sure your sim/sd cards are removed, then install the battery, hold both volume buttons down, and connect the usb cable from the pc to your phone.
You can also make a download jig, which I'm told works wonders.

The way I have been doing it is by getting Odin running, hold the vol up and vol down then plugging in the usb. I'm sure you may have already tried it that way, but just in case you used the pwr and one of the vol buttons instead, I thought I would mention it.
I know there have been problems with some people's hardware too, so there is a possibility of that.
not every phone has the button combo for download mode. it sounds like your boned, you should of talked to a few people before trying this kind of thing, its not hard but can easily be done wrong.
Look up on my posts in my profile I help a lot of people already going to download mode without using 3 button combo.

[Q] Bricked Cappie?

Hola fellow XDA-ers...
I have searched and can't find a solution...and seems that I might be perma bricked but some forums indicate I am now. So help!
My phone will not enter into a download mode. All I get is an exclamation mark triangle connecting a phone and a computer icon.
I have tried both volume down and both volume buttons for power and to enter into DL mode, but it just goes back to the icon screen with the exclamation point.
Any help is greatly appreciated...I was trying to flash back to stock using ODIN to update my Cognition because I got stuck not being able to update it through CMO.
You need a jig... http://goo.gl/0p52o
First: wrong forum, you should be posting in Q&A
Second: remove battery, hold volumeup+volumedown+power and insert battery. Remove your finger from the power button after you see it restart the first time. If it does not enter download mode after it starts and restarts, press the power button again. Keep your volumeup+volumedown buttons pressed during this procedure
Noone ever needs a jig. Jigs are a money making tool.
I've flashed bad kernel after bad kernel and have never once required a jig.

Only other suggestion i can make is to pick up one of connexion2005's jigs. 8 bucks- forces your phone into DL mode from bricked/off standpoint. I use it all the time and I have never bricked!

I back you up Coreym, 110% I bricked my phone more times than I can count (or my wife cares to hear about), and I've always been able to fix it.
I just run odin one click, pull battery, to kill boot loop, put battery back in, hold down volume buttons, and plug in usb, to get into download mode.
Once odin reads phone, click start, and it flashes default at&t kernel. Then go through odin3 reload your cwm and boom, back to flashing.
No JIG used.

Hey man,
You mean update through CWM?
Anyway, not sure if you found a resolution to your issue as of yet.
If not, try this, it really couldn't hurt at this point...
Apparently you have Odin and I'm guessing you're on a PC (Windows)
I'll assume you already have a stock factory ROM and PIT file (For Your Device) - if not you need to acquire these first.
Ensure you have the correct version of Odin. Some are recommending v1.7 or v1.52 - I personally use Odin v1.82
"Pluck" or Pull the battery from the device, remove the SIM and any external storage card (if any). *I just felt like using the work "Pluck" out of the context of harp playing...
Ensure the latest Samsung Drivers are installed on the PC (assuming you're on a Windows X86 or X64) and bounce the PC (reboot) Driver cache sometimes sticks...
Plug in your USB cable to the back panel of the PC (USB v2.0 or 2.2 is preferred but USB v1.0 will work) - Plugging into a front panel (for some odd reason often finds a way to disrupt order amongst the driver pool and creates havoc within Mass Storage in the DM. (Device Manager)
Now turn your device on.. (Just kidding...)
Open Odin first - then - plug the cable into your device and withing a few seconds Odin should detect a com port: (any port is fine - 3, 5, 4, 2, etc...)
Once the com port is seen, select the correct PIT file from the PIT menu in Odin and automatically the format partition check-box will populate. (I say to re PIT the device with correct PIT (should be a 512 PIT) because it sounds as though there may be some damage to the boot loader and the respective system partition. The PIT file is supposed the restore these partitions back to factory defaults provided you select the correct PIT file.
*Note - I wouldn't recommend using the PIT file for "every" ROM flash they you do, but at times it is necessary when flashing certain ROMs.
Now select the PDA (ROM you wish to flash) from the browse menu in Odin.
Make sure the check box is selected for reboot after flash.
Let the process take place - complete the flash and wait patiently for the new image or ROM to calibrate and load. (It may take a while)
Once loaded unplug the USB cable, replace the SIM and Ext Memory card then the battery and fix whatever settings you need to (ie: ATN, efs, WiFi, WAP, etc...)
Give it a go and see what becomes of it...
HtH
Peace-

He has (I think I remember telling him to do the same thing a while ago). He's most likely using a Cappy that's 1010 or greater.
This is why some people need the "3 button-fix" and whatnots as well. Right now at his/their current state, only a USB Jig will work since none of the combinations work properly.

I think I just bricked my phone

I recently got a Captivate for my sister and decided to root it using AIO program from the development section. After rooting the phone and installing CWM I tried to flash Apex 9 ROM. Since I'm used to my Inspire ROMs that will automatically wipe the phone before flashing I flashed it on top of the Stock ROM which resulted on the screen becoming glitchy. Removed the battery and tried to reboot the phone but it just keeps on bootlooping. Tried to start CWM but the phone won't do it. Tried getting into download mode by holding the volume up + down button and plug in the usb cable but it freezes. I'm desperate. Has anyone else experienced something like that before?

How can I get in straight into CWM? If I could get there I could just wipe the data and flash a different ROM and I know i'd be good. But right now I don't know what else to do
Before you do anything else, stop and read the op for the rom you're trying to flash. Apex 9.x needs GB bootloaders first. Try holding vol down while inserting the usb cord.
If this works, use odin1click and flash back to stock eclair.
Unfortunately, you learned the hard way that flashing a Captivate is different from flashing an Inspire.
Please, for the sake of all of the devs, mods, and more experienced flashers, please read the posts.
And get yourself a jig.

Yeah, sucks for me. I tried holding down the volume buttons. It just won't work. All I see is a a round sun, like when a flash website is loading, but nothing else happens. I'm reading about the jig but I already own a cheap micro usb cable, I don't have a solder. Why does it have to be so complicated? In the Inspire when something goes bad you just boot into CWM and do a nandroid restore but in this I can't even access CWM. Just tell me one thing. Is it fixable?

It is fixable, it just may take some legwork and a little money.
Have you tried taking out the battery, holding V+/V-, inserting USB cable, and then putting battery back in (that's the alternate froyo/eclair combo)?
If you hold Vol- and power (no USB insertion), you might get download mode (that's the GB combo).

Not working. If I plug the usb I get the damn sun. If I press the power button it will just start booting ove and over again. I think I just screwed up. I just can't understand how flashin a rom can mess up the download mode. Doesn't make any sense.
On I9000 gb bootloaders, volume down + power is download mode

My initial guess is that you may have gotten a phone with the 3-button issue. Before you flashed, were you able to confirm that download mode and CWM were reachable with button combos?
Just to make sure we've covered all the steps, what button combination did you try to use to get to CWM? The only thing I can think that's happening right now is that the kernel you're using is for Gingerbread, and because that's not lining up right, it won't let you get to CWM. That doesn't explain the download mode issue, though, which leads me to believe it may be the 3-button phone issue.
Something you might be able to try is to grab the Android SDK and use the adb tool to force your phone into download mode. It might take a few tries, but it's possible.
The other option is to buy/make a jig. That's pretty much 100% guaranteed to get you to download mode.

Gosh! 3 buttons issue! What other issues could this phone have? I have the worst luck ever!
I tried all of the buttons combinations: holding volume up and down and pressing power button, volume up only and power button, volume down only and power button. Volume up and down + pluging usb. And same with one button only. I think I might get a jig and go **** myself because this phone got on my nerves. But before, how can I use adb to force the phone into download mode if there is no phone-pc conection at all? The won't even turn on. Would it work if I use it while the sun appears?

I know this is exceptionally frustrating - I've been there myself. All I can say is to be persistent, and you'll get it back to good working order.
When you plug the phone into your computer's usb port, as long as the phone shows some sort of response (even if it's just the charge screen), it's likely to have a connection for data use as well. If you can get your phone bootlooping while you have ADB open, you might be able to issue the "adb reboot download" command in that brief window and get to where you're going without a jig.
One other item to try - One Click Unbrick. With this one, you'd start the phone up bootlooping and run it (I think). With any luck, it might get you somewhere you can get to download mode (or have a wider window with ADB).
And it probably won't work while the sun's showing, as it hasn't really booted up yet, although there's definitely no harm in trying.
i was reading over this and i got my phone into download mode but odin doesnt work

Are you getting your phone to download mode first, then opening Odin on your computer, and then connecting it?

Have you tried changing the USB port you're plugging into? It would be best to use one that's directly connected to the motherboard (not on the front of the PC).
Also, are you using a PC, Mac, or Linux machine?

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers on the computer side? If it's not recognizing it at all, that's one possibility. Another is a bad USB cable.
