Phone stuck after the volume + enter + power ? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Really i don't know why i've done this but after reading a blog i tried to see if the volume down+enter+power combination keys works. Now, after about 1.5 hours the phone display shows "Downloading ... Do not turn off target!!!" The phone is somehow hot ...
As i have a feeling, this is not so ok What can i do ? Can i replace the battery to reset the phone ? Will it start corectly ?

No panic ....
Remove battery and start phone normally and all work as before !!!!

Thx, noob here but i'll overcome u all

Long time shutdown
That 's it

A battery pull always works, but an alternative is to simply hold down the power button for ~10 seconds. This will always restart your phone, no matter what state it's in. Likewise, holding down the key combination to recovery (volume up + home + power) for that long will restart your phone in Recovery, and same for Download mode.
This is much better than doing a battery pull, as you dont have to remove the back. Give it a try. And you're welcome.

Take out battery 5 seconds put it back in and just try to turn it on

It won't start, I used the adb.exe to put it into download mode, and tried flashing it! And I think I had a bad flash. Now it won't even start!

OK take the battery out as i said, put it back in, then hold the power button for a few (2-3) seconds and wait like 10 seconds and see if anything is happening
If not take the battery out again and try the Power, Vol Down, and Home for a few seconds and wait
I had difficulties at first too
It could be a technique problem.
Persoanlly, I:
* Hold home and vol down
* Keep them held and add power
* Wait for the download screen before releasing (or galaxy s logo if you are going to fastboot instead).
I can also vouch that the optus SGS works

Tried it does not work!
Battery out, remove the SIM and SDCard.
Wait for a bit then put back the battery only.
Then do the combination. Vol Down + Power On + Home.
The combination works just that sometimes our fingers are pressing one button prior to another and not all at once. Just take it slow and keep trying.
It will work. Patience.
Try not to get frustrated. I have mine from Optus on the $49 Social Cap, but that doesn't matter because ALL OPTUS GALAXY S ARE TOTALLY UNLOCKED AND UNBRANDED. They just have Optus apps on them. =P
As the poster above said, remove the SIM and SD card, and make sure USB is unplugged.
Take the battery out, then put it back in. If you just press the power button then does it go to a black screen with just a small phone and computer icon on it? As this means it can't boot, but it isn't actually bricked.
When I boot into download mode I hold home, then vol, then power (then holding all at once, but starting off with home and vol before pressing power to make sure they're down before it can try to boot normally).
You'll need to take the battery out after each failed try to get the phone to shut off, otherwise it may still be on and of course can't go to Download mode then.
Don't worry, it's extremely hard to brick the Galaxy S. In fact I haven't heard of a single permanent brick yet, as there is always a way into Download mode.
Good luck!

I have advised him of all this on whirlpool...
I don't live to far from him if optus aren't going to be helpful I can try sort it out, I have had the same screen whilst learning all this, and always been able to get to download mode...
I have been having the same problem.
I cannot, no matter what combination, get into download mode on my optus SGS.
I try to hold down, Vol down, home, and power. If i leave all three on, it just keeps rebooting over and over.
If i take the power button off, it just boots normally. Even with the other two kept in. Also, the hard reset (Vol Down, and power) does not do anything either.
I am really starting to believe there is something seriously wrong with it.
you push all the buttons and when the galaxy/optus logo appears take you finger OFF the power button count to 1-1000 (ie one second ) all others buttons are still pressed then repress the power button and hold after the second.
Is the phone bricked?
Can you boot into Android?
I had a similar problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748475
If bricked let it boot to the black screen, leave it until the phone turns off then try to enter DL mode with the key Combo
If not bricked and you can boot to Android, best way is to turn debugging on and use the adb to reboot into download mode
what HSPDA band does that version run?
850/1900/2100 or something else?
Optus version runs
HSDPA
900/1900/2100
EDGE/GPRS
850/900/1800/1900

Help I entered the download mode by chance

How can I come back to my system from that download mode ?
I have yellow triangle and no other options to reboot. I;m noob, sorry but Im stuck.

Don't worry about it. The first time I entered download mode, I was pretty scared too. Anyway, samsung would be pretty stupid if they designed a 3-button combo to brick the phone.

Pulling the battery is the most common way to reset your phone, but this guy has the real answer. If you hold down the power button for ~10 seconds, it will do a soft-reset of the phone (meaning it will restart it). I've pulled off that back cover and removed my battery more times than I could count before I realized I could do this. It saves you a lot of trouble!

No need to press volume up, just power.

Power button is broken? How to reboot to download?

Power everything was working this morning
Noticed that my power button wasn't working...the screen stayed on. Pulled battery, put it back in and the phone booted without pressing power.
Was like "wtf?"
When it booted, I couldn't turn off the screen.
So I just left the battery out and took it home.
Put a new rom on phone, thought "This will fix it."
Wrong.
Had to flash using Rom Manager because in recovery the power button doesn't respond.
When it began to boot "AT&T Screen" wouldn't disappear and show me some Doc's v4.
I can manipulate it to boot into recovery but the power button doesn't work still.
I can NOT get it to go into recovery.
Can someone helps me?

have ODIN open, and battery removed from phone... hook up usb, hold both vol keys, while inserting battery... you should get download mode fine even with a busted power button... what you do next is up to u....
Once more, I can NOT get it to boot into recovery in that fashion.
I cannot place batter in the phone without it attempting to boot
(doesn't not get past the AT&T boot screen)
I cannot plug it up, hold volume buttons and then put in battery because it will just charge. If I unplug the phone, the phone still thinks it's charging actually.
My question really is Can I 'fix' the power button, or can I reboot it into download mode through command propt? I've never used ADB to access my phone, so that'll be new.

Dude... recovery is useless right now, you have a busted power button... and because of 'said busted power button', none of what you're trying to do is going to work... like youve said...
You are down to trying to force download mode with USB cord, holding the vol keys, and inserting the battery... ADB cannot run commands to a phone stuck at the boot screen... Thread title says, how to reboot to download, and with the button like it is, all you can do is what i've posted...
As to fixing the power button, i don't see why that's not possible... do u feel it press at all?

Yeah, it 'presses' and 'clicks'. I mean it worked most of the day, it got low on power and it just quit working.
Any luck forcing download by puttin the battery in while the usb is hooked up with the vol keys pressed in?
I was having the same problem with my power button and eventually the power button stopped working completely even though i could still hear it click. I sent it to mobiletechvideos and they fixed it really fast and it was a great price.

goes into boot-loop like if I were holding the volume up/down and the power together. That's what doesn't make sense.

And I could buy another used Captivate for $50. I have an upgrade in less than 3 weeks and this happens
It happened to me once before after flashing a bad kernel. I just did what B-Naughty had suggested. Remove battery -> plug in USB -> hold both volume buttons --> then insert battery. Put me right in download mode and Odin it back with a working power button. Unless it's really a hardware problem, then you're out of luck...

Oh in that case imo i would get another used captivate and wait for the sgs 3
Maybe if I went to a store and sucked up to them they'd let me upgrade a month early (especially since I was initially supposed to upgrade in October)
Might be down to getting/making a USB jig if it don't come up... but if you upgrade to gs2, the jig will work for that model as well so won't be wasted...

Maybe a jig would work. But easier, funner solution is adding a line for a Moto Atrix 1 for just a penny plus the $36 fee. Problem solved. Thanks for the help for what could just be a hardware failure. I'll upgrade my other line later when the SGS 3 comes out

[Q] Phone can't boot, vibrates once, then twice

Hey guys, I need some help...
Long story short, I wanted to restart my phone one day after a Market app wasn't working, and when I turned it back on, it would load the ATT screen, show the Galaxy S screen as well, but then the screen turns black and about every 15-20 seconds, there would be 1 vibrate, a pause, 2 consecutive vibrates, and this would continue to go on forever until I took out the battery or the phone died. I had 2.2 but cannot get into recovery mode or download mode, even with the 3 button combo. Am I screwed?
Thanks for your guys's help!

You probably need to build/buy a jig and use that to get to download mode. Otherwise, try this:
Take out battery
Plug in usb cable
Hold volume+ and volume-
Pop in battery
This should take you straight into download mode. You'll could try doing a factory reset while in download mode but you'll probably just have to flash a new ROM/Stock Image

I agree with this technique, although in my experience, you should hold down both volume buttons BEFORE plugging in the usb cable to your phone. It should take you right to download mode, and from there, I'm sure you know your way around. Best of luck.

Actually that particular order doesn't matter. It works both ways. All that matters is when the phone receives power (battery put it) it has the USB signal, the vol+ signal, and the vol- signal.

if your problem is about fixing the power button i think that you have to go to the assistance...if you're looking for a different way to turn off your phone and have the reboot menu then you have to search into google play. There some widgets like shutdown widget and so on that should work.
EDIT: Reboot menu is free and has the whole menu.
thx i'll try but if it doesn't satisfy me ill go for assistance
