WiFi problem - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
My SGS has the weirdest WiFi problem. It connects. It browses. It works fine.
BUT, it does not got to certain speeds or certain distances from the router.
The available internet speed for phones in my university is 10mbit/s, but when i try speedtest, it gives me 790kbit/s.
And the max distance, in every single router I've tried, it's not as far as other phones can get. Even a Nokia E71 can get 10 more meters away from the router than I can.
Example: I can be sitting with my friend, who has an HTC. He is downloading with 5Mb/s and sitting further away from the router outside. While I am downloading at 60Kb/s.
I've tried many ROMs (currently on CM9), and none of them worked.
Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

Speedtest shows 790kbit/s or 790kBit/s ??? As you know 1kb ~ 8kB
If there is indeed something wrong, I would try different modem, not different ROM.

My bad. KBit/s. In either case, my phone is many MBit/s behind. Would a different modem work on CM9?

And what is your current modem?
By the way, ~6,5mb/s from shared wifi access point with speed limited to 10mb/s is not so bad?

It's not bad at all. But all I am getting is 50-60Kb/s of download speed and at very short distances.
How do I know my modem? I only know the official GB modem I flashed using Odin.

OK well in recovery there's an option called devil, then wifi, then u change to the one that uses more battery but gives you better signal

OK, I was wrong with my modem/radio idea
Anyway, if you get speed over 6Mb/s from public 10Mb hotspot (SpeedTest result) your phone is OK! When you try to download something, and it is downloading slow, it probably means that the server you are downloading from has slow upload speed... Result from SpeedTest shows that your connectivity is fine...

Clearly you have got the buck wrong here man, its not only his speed that is the problem, it is the range, this phone is capable of a lot of range, I can reach wifi networks from down the road when I was on gb and ice isn't quite as good and he wants the best he can get.

Sorry for the late reply guys. changing the modem and the kernel didn't work. It is still super SLOW and the range is still the same (even after turning on Devil's fast-wifi)
Any more suggestions?

I got best results on glitch or you may try network tweaks.
Sent using i9000 running Doc's Master 4.0.4

speed is loe because there other people using the same connection. that is open network

Not really. The phone itself is very very slow in stock gb. It is not for my daily use.

Cant get 3G to work?

hey guys
been trying to get 3G to work, but everytime i go into the bank selection, and pressing on the 850mhz band, it says "menu not exsist" so i cannot enable 3G
anyone know wtf is going on here and how i can make 3G work?
thanks
EDIT: it worked fine up until i flashed 2.3.3, then flashed back to darky now i cant
Is the phone actually the 850 or 900mhz version?
If it's the 850 then check to see if you have a compatible modem. May just need to flash one to fix it.
Also check if your apn settings are correct just in case.

Its a 850 version, been using it for ages but it stuffed up when i flashed to 2.3.3 then back to darky
tried flashing JG4 and JL2 which are 850 modems but still not working

Check your apn settings. You may have list them during the flash 2.3.3 flash process. I've added a link in my first post just in case you need it.

These are some of the things I would try in your situation:
-Restore cwm backup of rom that had working 3g (I assume you would have done that already if you had one).
-restore to factory settings.
-flash a fresh / compatible stock rom just to see if it comes back. Then re-flash darkys.
I doubt there is a problem with the phone itself. Just some software mismatch somewhere.

Ok
I just flashed the stock telstra ROM back onto the phone, and still getting 2g, and 3g is there but not going to work...
my other phone is working on 3g fine though so its not telstra
( talking about NextG here to, same thing really )
EDIT: now it says its running on the 850 band under band selection, its the only one ticked. but its still E which is 2g
under service mode, its running GSM900, ****ty 2G
would it be because my phone only has 10% battery?
Well I hope for your sake low battery is the problem.
Hey, I thought I was the only one who flashes roms with such low battery. Guess not!

i dont think your supposed to flash roms with low battery but lol
Got another idea. Since you have 'E' showing then you must have correct apn details.
So now go to mobile network settings and select only wcdma in network mode. That is 3g only. Take it off auto.
Could just be that 3g there but its defaulting to 2g due to low reception.

stupid thing says "menu not exsist" when i go into the band selection
Also
There was this walkthrough thing I saw on here ages ago, about changing the product code the manual way, But can't find it.
It had something to do with using adb to copy over something in the efs folder, can't remember
Do you know what I'm talking about?
Is it possible that when they replaced the PCB in my phone, they did not put a 850 enabled version in there? Cause nothing I do is working.....
Yep, I know what you are talking about but I use another method.
In dialler type *#272*imei# with imei being your imei number of course.
It will show you the available product codes. Just remember that once you change it the phone will automatically reboot and do a factory reset.
Not sure however if this will help with your problem.
Was 3g working after you got it back from warranty?

Yeah I tried that way but it did not work.
And I'm 99% sure it was.
They replaced it with a regular one, I put my Optus sim in there, and 3G works. So they replaced it with a Regular 900MHz version, not a NextG version
You have got to be ****ing joking....
Oohh! That hurts man! I'd be pretty pissed too. If it shows as 900 then they fu**ed up.
I'd be going to see them Asap. Problem is you'll be without a phone again until fixed.
Give them an ear-full man.

[Q] [POLL] What's your favourite MODEM so far?

There are a lot of Rom's out there, stock or not. We've seen Semaphore, CF-root and Galaxian.
But what about the poor old Modem?!
Does latest mean best, or simply latest?
What's the best modem you've used for I9000 2.2/2.3?
Main points to qualify with;
- Battery usage
- Signal quality / strength
- GPS
- Country and carrier (Thanks Slaphead20)
- other!
Vote away! I've tried to include all those i've heard of being good, I know there's another thread over at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391
but I though a big poll for couldn't hurt.
Flake x
JVO is the best for me, plainly because the signal didn't always drop like the newest ones.
Jvq or jpy
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
For me hands down JV6.
Best call clarity that I've used. Love the battery life and GPS Lock too!
Every modem I've tried was better in one area or another, but JV6 gives me the best balance of them all, and I'm really liking the results...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
JPY and JVQ were good modems for me, as far as I can remember.
But to be fair, the experience is vastly different between regions, countries, and carriers, or we wouldn't have all those different modems.
Now I'm testing JVS and JVT, and so far JVT seems like a good modem in terms of balance.
vote for DXJV9.
Good signal & easy to Lock GPS
Kind of pointless thread as modem performance is related to area/carrier/terrain etc!

Missing sms

Recently my phone isn't able to receive some of the sms text, not all but some, I wiped data/cache and reinstall cm7 but the problem continues? Does anyone know what's wrong?

Do you have auto-retrieve enabled? Sounds dumb, but sometimes the most simple things go right above our heads.
Also, it would be of great help if you provided more information. What sms app you are using, carrier, modem, etc.
Just made sure that auto retrieve is on. I am on at&t And the radio band is T959tljl3. I'm using cm7 stable mod. It never happened before and it only started recently. And I'm not using any sms app Thanks for the help btw

Do you get a lot of text messages? One of our users on the Legend thread had the same issue. We suggested lowering the amount of messages from 100 to 50 before they are deleted. The user reported back that the issue was resolved after doing so. Not sure if cm works the same but worth a shot..
Yes I do, I will give it a shot, the weird thing is that it never happened before.
Thanks for the advice though

Get on over to the "soggycashew.weebly" website for modem dance and also find which modem is best for your area via map location. I just did the dance again the other night and fixed my phone. I'm using the T959tljl3 - radio-cm7-ics-captivate-tljl3-signed.zip download/modem. Works perfect up in Ottawa.

Contrary to popular belief, the modem does not affect your Wi-Fi signal, that is handled by the kernel.

There is something that can improve the perceived speed, but at the end it comes down to the raw network speed. And many times it's not the connection slow, but the sending server that is slow.

We're talking about the network speed, not the phone's. My phone has already been buttery smooth even when I was on ICS.
But showing speed test results aren't gonna help you anything with this phone. Your network speed is a 'given' situation where you don't have control over it unless you're willing to pay some more money to see improvement. I'm one of the lucky dude in my country to have constant 12 mbps network speed but I don't need to boast that here as I don't think it's gonna contribute anything to other users. Unless we come up with some tweaks of this phone to improve your network speed, I've always thought this kind of thread is useless.
