Hi,
do any of you guys have experience with purchase and use of the Droid 3 as GSM in Europe?
I live in Belgium and travel a lot. So I need a smartphone with a physical keyboard that can keep up with my professional and recreational needs.(btw: any better solutions?)
I think the Droid 3 is the best solution given its above average battery life.
Can anyone, who went through the approximately the same situation inform me, how to best acquire the device (I don't have anyone in the States nor Canada that can ship it for me...), what the latest roms are that are compatible and the experiences (positive and negative ones!) till now?
thanks in advance.
Hi.
Yes I have the droid 3 in the netherlands.
1) https://negrielectronics.com/motorola-xt862-droid-3-verizon.html
Buy from there. Trusted site.
2) It works pretty well with GSM for me. You might have to make some chances depending on your provider. (needs root, but pretty easy)
Many providers here work instantly if you don't have a very old sim-card but e.g. for vodafone you need to edit 2 files to get data/sms.
3) Pro's: great keyboard! It's all about the keyboard for me. If you don't need it there are better phones available.
Cons: The screen is only average at best (compared to galaxy S2 etc.), but for me it's good enough.
4) About the battery; with custom ROM it's pretty good but I wouldn't say it's something that makes the droid 3 stand out.
5) There's ICS available for droid 3 but it doesn't have video recording and HW codecs.
I use mavrom 4.0 myself.
Hi.
I have the XT860 (Canadian GSM ver. of droid 3) in the Israel.
bought from Ebay .
works pretty well with GSM for me. You might have to set yours provider APN to get data/mms.
use Stok Rom .
If you can get an 862 with a SIM unlocked slot it should be fine. The biggest things are that you may have to do the AT&T/T-Mobile hack and mess with build.prop but there is well documented guides but the only showstopper is it the SIM will unlock.

You don't need to do the AT&T hack for use in europe. The one I linked from negri is SIM unlocked
Probably not but there have been a few posts I remember reading that basically said that they had to for Europe because it didn't work the best.

@DoubleYouPee: so after purchasing it from https://negrielectronics.com/motorol...3-verizon.html , no additional tweeking was necessary to get it work in the Netherlands? except the mavrom (which doesn't have video recording capabilities?)

No tweaking was necessary, but I did need a new SIMcard (note: my sim was VERY VERY old, so you might not have this problem).
With providers like vodafone some edits may be needed.
I use mavrom because it's way better than stock and has no bloatware. Also it fixed a bug I had.
MAVrom does have video recording capabilities. Everything works.

Does anyone have a feel yet for how much Verizon dogged down the Droid 3 with bloatware, bad hardware decisions, and/or just generally screwed up the specs from what Motorola originally intended it to be...?
For instance:
- is the GPS locked so Google Maps can't access it?
- is there Crapware that I won't want yet won't be able to uninstall?
- can't make it a hotspot?
- can't tether it without fees or 3rd-party software?
- are there other things Verizon has "branded" that will make me crazy(er)?
Should I hold out for an unlocked version on Ebay, or go for the one from Verizon and unlock it myself..?
Or...is the locked version kinda ok enough to deal with that unlocking it isn't worth it?
Thanks.

Ok so as about what you asked here is what i see on my system.
There is some verizon apps preinstalled that cant be removed
V Cast Media Manager
V Cast Music
V Cast Tones
V Cast Videos
VZ Navigator.
they do not however seem to bog the system down at all.
it can be a hotspot but until rooted you will have to pay for it i assume. I never use this feature so not sure how all that works
I would also say you cant tether it without the verizon software to do so but again i do not use that feature
Maps uses GPS just fine, i have never heard of moto blocking the GPS from google maps before.
I personally think it is a great phone. i have hated the last couple versions of blur but this one i could live with just would like to have root to remove some of the verizon stuff. The system is snappy i think if you could get a staight vanilla rom like apex it would be even faster but i have yet to see the system lag or force close anything.
I would also be willing to bet someone will find a way to root it in the next couple weeks.
I would get it but just my opinion
XT860?
It looks like there will be a Canadian version on Bell in a few weeks too.
I'm in the UK, and all reports suggest that the Milestone 3 (as presumably it would be called) isn't getting a UK release, so I'm looking at all these other international models and am wondering which would be most appropriate.
My assumptions so far are:
1. Droid 3 is primarily CDMA, and although it has some GSM capability, I'm not sure that it's going to work terribly well in the UK.
2. The XT883 (Chinese Milestone 3) is primarily CDMA too, and will also potentially suffer from language issues, and also things like inability to access the Android market?
3. The XT860 from Bell might be a contender - I think I'm right in saying that Bell operate a GSM network, and obviously the phone will be in English/French out of the box.
I guess the hardest part will be making sure the device is unlocked, i.e. not tied to a network, and will operate in the UK before buying one from abroad.
Does anybody have any thoughts?
Cheers,
Steve.
The Canadians get the XT860 Motorola Milestone 3 4G, or should we say Faux G since its not 4G and everyone knows it.
Unlocking the Droid 3 is a *****, If you do not have account with them it is near impossible all the codes only do not work since the phone goes to a subsidy mode.

I currently own a Nexus S and have found the Android experience great apart from the lack of hardware keyboard. Now the market for quality slider phones in the UK is zero. What I would like to know is would the phone operate in the UK (3G not just GSM). Also how easy is would it be for me to unlock/root/to basically fully own the device? (Having not owned a locked/bloated android os before) .
Or is there another option you guys could recommend? I'm considering the Asus tablet slider or perhaps waiting for a milestone 4?! (Though apparently milestone aren't as accessible as Droid in terms of mods /community stuff.
Any other suggestions or comments would be appreciated
Thanks

Hiya, I'm in the UK and I've been using my D3 for about 3 months here on vodafone, then T-Mobile/Orange (virgin mobile uses both of these networks).
Everything seems to work just fine for me - 3g is quick enough, no complaints.
Be sure to get a pre-unlocked phone, unlocking in the UK can be done, but costs money and it's a slow/fiddly process.
As far as rooting/ROMS go - the phone is pretty much wide open by now, all except the kernel/bootloader, so no overclocking yet.
One last thing - be sure to use TheSolutor's GSM signal hack here :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326310
It helps a great deal in getting 3g to work more consistently.
I am visiting the United Kingdom in March. I will be in the UK for two weeks. I will bring my Droid Bionic with me, even though it's a CDMA device and will not work in Britain. As a Droid Bionic owner, how can I get some use out of my Droid Bionic while in the UK, and how can I get an android, touch-screen smartphone while in the UK, that has voice and reliable data?
I know about the Verizon Global traveler program. If I am looking at the correct list of phones Verizon provides though the global traveler program, they look like lousy phones. I would really like an android touch-screen smartphone with voice and data while I am in the UK.
So, given the above info, what should I do?

Your best option for a global capable Motorola smartphone that can be used here in the US as CDMA and overseas with GSM is a Droid3.
If you don't travel frequently though, then it may not be worth it to you.
The Droid 2 Global or Droid Pro would also work and may be found cheaper than a D3. There are also GSM only models like Milestone 3 and others that would work but without any CDMA capability for US use.
There are no LTE/CDMA/GSM global models despite the fact that the Bionic hardware(MDM6600 radio chipset) is fully capable of handling it, it is disabled in the firmware at the request of VZW.
The GSM functions of their global models are also generally compromised in the firmware to some degree in order to accommodate their global device specifications. USSD dialing codes dont work properly and international SMS and other features may not work.
There is also an unlocked Chinese radio firmware that can be flashed to the D3 to allow both domestic and international use that works great. I am running it on my D3 and have it on a T Mobile SIM here in the US. It is EDGE only data on T Mobile due to their deployment of 3g/4g HSPDA+ on AWS bands here, which is not supported by the MDM6600 chipset.
So, you have many options, but all of them entail purchasing another phone.
My wife travels to Europe quite a bit and she had a Blackberry forever. Last month I bought her a white Droid 2 Global in perfect used condition on eBay for $179.00 and gave it to her. She likes a physical keyboard (it also sports a touchscreen keyboard) so it was a perfect fit for her. She played with it for a few hours and the next day activated it on Verizon and needless to say will no longer even look at her BB Tour.
She is in Eastern Europe right now and keeps emailing me (from her phone) telling me how thrilled she is with the phone. She bought a cheap voice and data SIM over there and it all works like a charm.
I think with all of her use she would end up paying Verizon more than $179 for their lousy global services for the same period. I highly suggest you buy a nice cheap android world phone, buy SIM's wherever you go and and keep Verizon out of the loop.
If you want to use your bionic over there, I recommend downloading an app called GrooveIP.
It will allow you to use your phone to make and receive calls via wifi.
Data and voice would be useless over there. If you give Verizon a call, they can place your voice and data on hold for you while your gone. You can still fully use your phone when connected to wifi with groove IP and your Google voice number for free.
Your other option was mentioned earlier which was to invest in a global phone. With an unlocked global phone, or European one you won't have any problems.

Probably not. T-Mobile's and ATTs 3g bands were different frequencies (1700mhz vs 850/1900). However, in some places T-mobile has started to use 1900mhz and unlocked ATT devices will work. This seems to be random right now and even T-mobile support may not be able to tell you where.
Or you can do what I did, and get nrvate's CM10 build for the i957 (I'm a noob so no links for me yet) then flash this radio: Tmo_SGH-T989_UVLE1_radio.zip (Google it). I get full HSPA+ and have clocked DL speeds up to 19000kbs. Of course YMMV, and no guarantees that it will work for you, won't brick your tab or kill your pets.

Yeah it works well with the only problem being the power usage is rather high, and drains faster in idle. After looking at logcat I think this radio doesn't go into idle mode properly so keeps sucking power when not in use. Running it's a little less usage (maybe 30 min less) but on idle it drains in 24 hrs. Turning off 3g helps but for me I can live with this to get 20mb down. When ICS for the i957 finally shows up it should be possible to see a better radio get put in CM10 (which is still in early development, but that's what the ROM below is based on).
I'm using TWRP for recovery. After Clockwork being kind of wonky I have seen the light and use TWRP on all my devices. It just works.
The ROM is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867579 and go to post#2. There are some issues but it runs remarkably well for being like 3 weeks old.
This is the radio I used from a Galaxy SII. Google Tmo_SGH-T989_UVLE1_radio.zip and get it from Dev Host. I found out about it looking at radios for similar hardware and found that the Note is close so I took a chace and did it. So far so good!

This is great to hear. I am going to hold off for now, as I would have to open a TMobile account, and I really dont NEED to have this until I start traveling in a few months.
Now what would be AMAZING, is if somehow this tablet could work on verizon. I have a huge corporate account with them and it would cost me next to nothing to add the tablet to the account, assuming it would work. I didn't think it was possible, but then again, I didn't think TMobile high speed connection was possible either.
Any idea if there is a way to get this working on verizon? Or if anyone is even trying?

I can tell you that is impossible. T-Mobile uses GSM and Verizon uses CDMA. You can only put a SIM card device on GSM carriers (TMO and ATT).

I could not tell you as T-Mobile doesn't have LTE yet. TMO will use a band that the i957 can support, but it will probably take another radio (if any) to work. I've seen 21mb down from HSPA+ so even if I never see LTE I can't be too disappointed

Yes it is. The device was locked at ATT and AFAIK there is no other way other than going through a unlock service. I used cellunlocker.net. $25 and your IMEI gets you a code in a few hours.

As I said that is impossible because the carriers use incompatible setups. SIM card carriers (GSM) will only work with other SIM card carriers. Verizon uses CDMA with no SIM cards. The networks themselves are completely different and hardware cannot be hacked to work. Most of the world uses GSM with SIM cards and if you travel overseas, you'll need a GSM device to use unlocked devices on any networks. Blame Verizon for picking a standard that 80% of the world doesn't use
Has anyone tried flashing the tmobile high speed radio but on the current rooted stock ICS rom instead of the cm10 rom?

I still do not know how to get FastBoot_SU working on my XT907 so these things are just experimental.
Verizon XT907 Razr M US with US T-Mobile using NON-HLOS.bin from AUSSIE ICS
I know Edge and Voice is working with my Sim.
No idea how to get FastBoot_SU working so i did this a bit different.
You will need:
VZW_XT907_4.1.1-9.8.1Q-27-2-4_1FF.xml (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017200)
RSDLite6.1.4_FLASH
MotorolaDeviceManager_2.3.4 DRIVERS
NON-HLOS.bin from AUSSIE Razr M it is 102.400KB compared to the US 49.xxxKB (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8648738/NON-HLOS.bin)
WinRar or any Zip Program
1. Navigate inside VZW_XT907_4.1.1-9.8.1Q-27-2-4_1FF.xml using winrar or winzip and find the original NON-HLOS.Bin over write this with the Aussie Radio 100kb one. Make sure its packed normal again.
2. Use RSDLite, make sure Phone is in Debug mode, flash the new VZW_XT907_4.1.1-9.8.1Q-27-2-4_1FF.xml with the modified Radio.
3. Let the update do its thing, once done insert SIM and enjoy GSM reception.
4. Find a way to gain root access ahhahahaha bc this should wiped ur root access.
There is a way to use FastBoot_SU somehow but it does not work me ...
This is the same modification done to ICS to get it to work with US carriers, except you are on JB or in this case i used JB to flash the entire device.
Some one feel free to clean up these steps or improve this for easy use of tutorial ? You are welcome to edit LOL
followed the steps. but it seems the radio is problematic, because att signal is vey vey weak. I couldnot place call.the same micro sim had 4 bar at my hd2 win phone.
any fix?

Just tried flashing following your instructions and got stuck.
RSD Lite v5.6 Multi-Flash reports:
Failed flashing process. 16/19 flash "cdrom" -> Phone returned FAIL.; phone connected
Please help!!! Phone now stuck in Fastboot Flash Mode...
Thank you
I did not use 5.6
Also make sure ur battery is above 50% I did have issues flashing when my phone was at about 30-40 ish %
It will show up as low battery.
Get the Stock Verizon JB reflash it with 6.X and up.
Then use a clean version of JB with a modded PJcon Aussie Radio.
And reflash it from there.
To get out of there just Reboot by holding all buttons Power and Volume until reboot.
Thank you!
It only works with version 6 and above.
All is good now.
BTW I just traveled through the documented refarmed areas in Chicago and Cleveland and still no 3g.
yeah same here.
We still figuring out how to get 3G or 4G
Just to add some "fuel to the fire"...a year or so ago I got bored with my Defy and got an Atrix 4G online from the US (I live in Australia). It was AT&T branded and locked so had to purchase an unlock code. When I got it going on Telstra, the reception was just never that good. People always complained they couldn't hear me and I had similar experiences with hearing them. I even gave it to my bro on the other side of the country and he had the same issues.
I suppose what I'm putting forward is that even if it is 2100mhz band or 850mhz band which the Aussie radio does (I don't know what AT&T/T-Mobile run on), it's possibly more than that? I recall reading a VERY interesting article about how much work carriers do to get phones to work on their selected band - no disrespect to any Devs intended, this is just my thoughts as this may be a ghost we're chasing?
Or is the Electrify M XT905 going to work any better?
Works perfectly fine in Germany though Germany uses Stock Rom for XT907
I am getting Super strong signal everywhere better than my iPhone 4, I am using Aussie radio.
I even get better signal than the AT&T users. So it maybe the area, AT&T been getting worse bc they share some towers with T-mobile now.
By that the same tower rent space T-mobile is allowed to put up their Antenna gear, which sometimes decreases signal strength of AT&T.
Which happened alot in my area, alot of AT&T users loosing more signal... and running a modded phone is probably isn't helping the matter.
But T-Mobile seems to have few more frequencies after the refarm ? Maybe that's why ?
The XT907 Definitively is able to get H+ on GSM with Stock Rom in Europe.
H+ we managed to get it to 2.xMB but her normal area we only get 1.5-1.9MB ish
She also picks up E and 3G here and there.
This is on O2 Germany (DE) in Munich Testing to Frankfurt.
Using Stock Verizon Firmware un-modified stock radio.
I will test Aussie Radio next week in Germany see what happens.
But right now She is enjoying H+ with GSM on a XT907.
Hi guys,
I've read the threads in Q/A and this one about different sim cards in RAZR M, and I must say I'm pretty sad because it doesn't work.
I like this phone very much. It's the best phone I've ever seen. But I won't buy it because I don't have money to pay for expensive plans to Verizon (nor I will be in the US for 2 years which is the minimum contract time), and it doesn't work on T mobile which I would like to use. I guess I will have to stay on my Defy and wait for some new unlocked version of Motorola (never gonna happen imo).
Or should I buy it and try this method so I can use it partially with T mobile? Please advise.

I am using it with this method with T-Mobile.
Though when i am in Germany I have to take the mod out to get onto 3G in Germany.
With US-T-mobile we only managed to get Edge Connectivity so far.
I like it because i dont use much data and edge is enough for geting GPS to work smooth and surfing is slooow.
Else all is well =)
Thanks for the info~~~!!
It'd be really cool if the dropbox link worked. Unless im doing something wrong. Unless i can pull it out of another stock/rom file
Great info. Is the dropbox link down for good? I cant seem to find any mirrors :-/
This method has been made obsolete by the discovery of a much simpler procedure that edits a single bit in the radio NVM that enables full service on US carriers.
I wrote up the updated method in the Q&A section.

Can someone please reupload AUSSIE RADIO as Radiocomm method is not working for me!

Hi guys,
I've read the threads in Q/A and this one about different sim cards in RAZR M, and I must say I'm pretty sad because it doesn't work.

Yes it is.
Though I am not sure if it is possible on the 98.18.78.
Earlier ones will work.
