[Q] Integrity of ROM Downloads: How can we be assured? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In some downloads we are able to check if our downloaded files are correct using MD5 Hash. There is none for ROMs so far that I can find(correct me if I'm wrong).
How can we be sure that we have downloaded the file completely? Also if the file is correct? If we flashed an incomplete ROM will it brick the note?
Thanks!

Hi!
I'm not an expert, but whenever I flash something I use Mobile Odin. If it's md5, before starting to flash, it will ask you to check the file integrity. Hope this helps.

All stock roms come with md5 checking and some custom roms. But the best root is torrents you cant get a broken download this way as tge torrent client checks the file as it goes

I downloaded both from sammobile and xda the stock rom for United Arab Emirates and they don't have any MD5 hash. please teach me how to check the md5. I use MD5 summer to generate md5 sum and compare it with what the downloads give.....

I have had a few people ask me for this, so I extracted an RUU and packaged it.
Make sure you check the MD5 before flashing.

Thanks adrynalyne, this will come in handy for any people needing to take their phone back to Verizon for various reasons.
Does this help us s-off users?
Depends on what your definition of help is. Only s-off users can use it.
I'm sorry, but I have to ask what the MD5 is and how it's significant. I know that when I flashed FrankenROM this past weekend I noticed that in Clockwork, it displayed that it was doing something with the MD5, but prior to that, I'd not seen it mentioned. I also see that on your website, Adrynalyne, you have the MD5s listed with each of your custom ROMs. Honestly, the numbers and letters appear quite random. What would one be checking for? Thank you.
When you download something, your MD5 hash should match.
If it doesn't, then you have a corrupt or tampered download.
If it does, then you have downloaded the product correctly.
Oh! Very cool! Thank you much.

How do I check if the MD5 matches?
Also would I put the .zip on the root of my microSD and reboot into Clockwork? Or would I unzip and do it through unrevoked 3?
Thanks for this. Might come in handy

The person packaging the file will give you the MD5 hash usually near the download link. You can use a free program called md5checker to verify the hash.
For example the hash for this file is:
MD5: CBE810D1313909B3BF112C7F4A186769
As far as flashing just put on the root of your SD card formatted fat 32 and flash from hboot it will find the file and ask if you want to up date, volume up for yes and after it finishes volume up to reboot.

Thanks.
So is this essentially "un-rooting" your phone? (I know s-off will stay)

Well you would also need to load an unrooted OS before flashing this.

I want downgrade my phone to 2.1 stock. I have radio 2.05, running skyraider 2.5 and loving it. But I want to make sure I can downgrade just in case I need to bring my phone in to Verizon. Anyways, I downloaded the zip file to downgrade, but when I try doing it from the hboot it reads the zip file but then it says "main version is older" and does not let me downgrade. Can someone help?

Firmware downloads

I have downloaded various firmwares from this site but all say file corrupted, somewhere along the line, when I try to extract them. I would like to try these roms but this has happened every time! Is anyone else having this problem?
The firmwares I downloaded are
jetpack v2.1 wipe
Blockbuster rom
Surface
Please someone help me!

u shouldnt extract them u should flash in cwm(clockwork mod).. if u dont have cwm, flash cf root kernel via odin(load file in phone and make sure repartition is unchecked).. then u will have cwm menu after that install the above rom by it..
Exactly....they are not to be extracted, just flashed.
However before you flash ANYTHING it sounds like you need to do some more research and learn what you are doing. Read the excellent guides and FAQs here and educate yourself before you start messing with things. It may be the difference between having a successful flash and ending up with a touchscreen brick.

They shouldn't show as corrupted even though they aren't meant to be extracted, I'd be careful flashing these ROMs, most devs should provide an md5 hash which you can check your download against to make sure it's not corrupted.

Restore factory FW, settings, lose root etc... Odin stuff

Hi,
I know it has been asked A LOT!! But the thing is my tab starts loosing the LCD screen, upper left part is damaged by a very small amount, but it's getting worse, like the screen is slowly losing the stuff inside it... Weird I know...
I have bought the tablet from Estonia, so I grabbed Baltic 3.2 android fw from here : http://samsung-updates.com/gt-p7310-galaxy-tab-8-9-wi-fi/
Do i just put the zip in the .pda field? and will I lose root and all will be stock, so that it doesn't seem like it had Costum rom, recovery, etc... on it... and what things do I need to tick in odin?
(I just want to be 100% sure that I don't mess everything up)
Thanks,
J
You need to extract the .tar.md5 from the zip file. Use 7-zip to do that. Then run the md5 file in PDA. You'll lose root and you'll be stock.
Only tick auto-reboot and f.reset.

[HELP] Flashing/MD5 error

Hey fellow HTC ONE owners,
I am having a bit of an issue. I recently rooted and installed TWRP. (I am coming from the Sensation, so have some knowledge of root & HTC)
I am currently on TMO so I need a ROM using a 4.1.2 base (Either Trickdroid 5.6 or ARHD 9.4) so I can still use WiFi calling. Here is my issue:
Arghhh !!! Everytime I try to flash (in twrp 2.6) ARHD 9.4 or Trickdroid 5.6 , I get the same error !!!
Updating partition details...
Formatting cache using mke2fs...
Done.
Updating partition details...
Installing 'sdcard/Trickdroid_5.zip'...
Checking for MD5 file ...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found.
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/Trickdriod_5.zip'
I am using OSX. I also have NONE of the boxes checked in TWRP. Help.
Bump....anyone able to assist?
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You don't have another error?
However, try to re-download the rom

Turn off the md5 check in recovery options. Recommend you check the md5 manually though.

I have everything UN checked in TWRP. I still get the error. I would try to re-download the ROM, but there is only one link available for each ROM as they are older versions (Need to be on 4.1.2 for wifi calling)
Thanks
BUMP * Anyone out there that can help? It would be much appreciated !!!!
Final bump. Then I'm giving up

Its just corrupted download im 99% sure . Are you downloading straight to your phone or pc then transfer to your phone or external card? Corrupted file cause by bad downloads or when you transfer files from pc to phone vice versa. Download rom and try flashing same file again. Trust me I had exact same problem like that just two days ago it keeps showing skipping md5, no md5 found and shows failed to extract files or something.
