[Q] Transfer mkv files to note? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just got my note and when I copy a .mkv file to it, windows explorer crashes. Same thing happens when I try to transfer to micro sd card. Any way around this except having to rename .mkv to .mkvv?
Edit: Video showing problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU14QXjGqTQ

I transfer mkv files all the time.. never had any problems. Have you tried using Samsung Kies?

Tried transfering a 1gb mkv file now with kies but it automatically converts the file to mp4 and takes forever to transfer. Any way to just transfer a mkv file to the note?

Anyone know?

I transfer.mkv files all the time. Never had an issue.
Try android commander if doing a power cycle on your computer doesn't fix it.

How large is the file? You might be going over the 4 GB max file size of FAT32?

Nope if you past the 4GB max filesize of FAT Windows will tell you that it doesn't allow you to transfer. I have a feeling your computer is too slow to buffer large video files. How's your com specs?

Yeah the files are 1-2gb. I have a quad core cpu at 4.6ghz and 6970 crossfireX, so shouldn't be a problem. I made a video showing what happens here:
Might have to watch in 720p to see the letters.

I can transfer .avi and other file formats fine, but mkv just doesnt work for me.

A guess...I reckon it might be due to MTP and the WMP <-> Explorer handler not working for mkv files, i.e. it tries to convert/handle the file and cannot so dies.
Are you on GB? If so, use USB mass transfer mode instead. The speed difference kicks ass.

I think it's the codec installed in windows crashing
It is trying to generate a preview during copy. Try installing latest k-lite codec

It worked fine to transfer mkv files using my laptop now, so its my desktop that's the problem. I installed K-Lite Codec Pack 8.7.8, but still explorer crashes. I also tried different usb ports. I use windows 7 on my desktop and laptop, so weird that I have this problem only on desktop.
Edit: Did a reinstall of windows 7 and that fixed it. Thanks for all the help guys! Really appriciate it.

I installed Android Commander and I did all the Phone and Computer Requirements:
I can start Android Commander, it sees my Galaxy Note Rocket ROM ICS LPY v4 + Speedmod kernel, but I have no root acces. What am I doing wrong?

False external SD-card
For months I've tried to transfer mkv-files (<4gb) to my external card.
I tried to watch mkv-files (>4gb) via USB-stick (NTFS formatted) via OTG using [root] Ntfs Mounter-app. No problem watching it.
I tested my sd-card, it has a storage of 4GB...scammed! Better scammed than a not 100% working Galaxy Note

How to play files larger than 4GB ?

Is it possible to play big .mkv files of 5-9GB on the Galaxy Note ?
If yes, can we just format SD Card to NTFS and the phone will recogonize it... OR do i have to do sum rooting and sum complex stuff for the phone to identify the card?
Also, can we play big files frm phones internal memory ?
I dont have the device myself, but by using lots of different Android devices, I would think it wont read NTFS drivers. I have used some Honeycomb tablet that had modules and custom apps to mount NTFS drives.
I think the device should support EXT2 formatted card, but if you were using linux with that filesystem already you wouldn't ask this.
I use softwares like AviDemux to split the MKV file. Also is there actually any Android software that provides hardware acceleration for MKV files, otherwise I would think HD MKV files would struggle to play smoothly.

Hull 1080p, works fine. Many videos on youtube!
Note can't play files over 4gb. Use an mkv splitter instead.
Using Es file manager network access + dice player worked well watching mkv files > 8GB over a network share.
Of course this approach may not be suitable for everybody.

What software actually just split the files and dont actually recode/encode them, so that the procedure is completed in a minute? please suggest a few...
Also, are you referring to this software?

Sproxy,
Tht seems too complicated to sum1 who never used android before!
Sry Double post
I am sry but i have to bump this, as i am still looking answer to my last post above ^ [#6]
You can use MKVToolNix to easily split without re-encoding the files...

Seconded, with mkvtoolnix it's actually very easy to do this, just load up the file, give a new file output name, set the file to split every e.g. 4000M and go.
It will take a while, but you get a serially-named group of files which are (as far as I can tell) exactly the same as the input, but split into 4000MB chunks. Dead easy.
Pity that the siyah kernel does not work on the note yet.
Siyah Kernel supports NTFS mounting of SD and USB-Storage.

File Transfering

Is there a faster way to transfer files? I downloaded the infamous Kies but that didn't even run after being installed on my PC. When connected it shows up as a tablet and takes EXTREMELY LONG TIME to transfer any to almost all kinds of data. Is there a work around on this?

WiFi is the fastest, I there are a few apps that will handle both paid and free. Also dropbox is excellent for copying files too and from. And you can use the comp. Or es file explorer for ftp and shared devices as well.

why dont u change usb setting to mass storage and copy files using data cable. its faster
You should try AirDroid, work really well. Install app on device and client on pc.

Computer doesn't see movie stored in Download folder

For some reason my computer can't see the MKV movie stored in the Download folder of my Nexus 7. I've used 2 different file managers which clearly show that the file is actually there, and I've played it numerous times. Why the movie doesn't show up on my computer is beyond me.
What movie is it???
How did the movie get there???

Open folder options, select show system files and apply.
If this method makes ur pc see files then u need to download attribute changer and change attribute of file from system to non system.
U have connected ur nexus to some virus infected pc and it changed its folder options.

restart the tablet.
Its will be there.
I am not sure the accurate term for it. But the way how android these days works.
Its has to update the index for it to show up. and a lot of times... it does not...
sometimes you see duplicated files from a computer when there is only one.
Restart will re-index it.

Cant sync movie to my LG optimus 4X

Hi XDA forums,
Ive bought my LG for quite some time now and I've finally stopped worrying about battery life and started to want to watch movies on my device.
However this all came down crashing onto me when I tried to transfer a movie file (705mb) onto my phone.
I get this specific message when I try View attachment 2143251
The same thing happens when i use PC suite, View attachment 2143252
It seems like it doesn't matter what file it is, I've split the file in 2, 375Mb and 325mb and transfered that way but still no use.
In the past i have however successfully transfer photos and videos OUT of my phone onto my computer to free up space on the phone.
I have no sd card, using internal memory 16gb.
I am with Wind.
Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't copy files to SD card through USB

I'm trying to copy over files from my Windows computer to my Note 4 so I can quickly view things through the Gear VR. I have USB debugging turned on and it connects to my computer in camera mode. When I navigate to my SD card and open up the Oculus folder I see all the folders (360Photos, 360Videos, etc) however if I open any folder they all say 0 items and are blank and it won't let me copy files into any of these folders. Anybody know what is going on here?
Thanks.
I think mass storage feature was removed from android long time ago. If you use external drive and otg cable you can copy files from drive to memory card using Note's built in file manager (my files)

My steps are little different. Im using one of those sandisk memory sticks with usb connector on one side and micro usb on the other. Copy files from pc to memory stick and plug in memory stick to phone and transfer files using My Files app. I know it is extra step but allow me to have few movies on stick and load them when needed

I personally downloaded one of many apps that enable sd card writes. I believe you need root though. Now, I just copy with a usb to the computer. No need to take out the sd card. Make sure you download the Note 4 usb drivers for your os. Also, make sure your sd card is exFAT so you can copy files larger than 4gb. I have many 10+ gig 3D video / movie files I play with the Gear VR. The only issue is sound on some of them as it won't play. What I do is play the file on my computer and on the Gear VR at the same time. Good luck!
