So who all out there, when you get a new phone and are ready to root it for the first time, get even a little nervous about bricking your new toy, even if the method is solid and sound? I know I almost have to pump myself up to root my new devices, and then realize I'm doing it, and think it's rather silly. Just wondering if anyone else does this.
Rooting? Nah, no reason to be nervous about that at all. Even the first time I flashed a Rom I simply made sure it was a day that if I messed anything up I could go without the phone for a while if necessary.
Just a tiny bit, but more excited than anything. It's pretty fun imo

But now I just don't know if I wanna do it already, or keep waiting for official ics and root from that. Not sure if I'm waiting for a crap ics, or if one of the custom roms would strike my fancy.
So yeah, nervous nelly here...

well im not nervous about the rooting but more when you play with the custom roms, because i want my device to be able to work all the time and im not happy when im missing sound or a tool or cant call or something like that

There's nothing to be nervous about. As long as you carefully follow instructions, you should be fine. It's actually quite difficult to brick a device. I still don't understand how people do it.

Because we have a pretty good device, and development was great for a while but the bootloader has kept this device from being truly great for a long time. i think if we can crack it it would bring back some development. and not only that but if we can find a way to crack this maybe we can put our information forward to other motorola devices with the same issue. id love to have the kernel options, and variety of roms available ive had on past devices. the og evo was awesome for that one reason. and i honestly believe its possible....

An unlocked bootloader would make no difference. With kexec we can bypass and use a custom kernel anyways. However the custom kernel is still in development as motorola never released an ics/JB kernel

I think it would be great to crack the bootloader. However, has any phone with a locke bootloader been cracked without a leak from the manufacturer?
Moto must be using pretty large bit keys to lock the bootloader. You'll have to be lucky to crack it, not good.
I don't really see the actually bootloader lock changing in anyway. As said above kexec is a good system, just have to be patient.

I know that we have Kexec on D3, but I'm going to try an experiment on the Bootloader this weekend to see if I can unlock it. Reason being other devices do not have kexec and something crazy happened last night at work. In short, I cracked an AES encryption on a Motorola Radio(the ones Ambulances use). I know that may not sound like much, but I think I might have a way to do the same method on the Bootloaders for our Motorola Phones. I don't wanna go into too many details on it, but I'll try to get you guys a response next week sometime.
Please lol no trolling, I just like trying things. Chances are the method may not work.

Not trying to "hate" but I have talked to some of the best unlock devs there are and they are having extreme trouble with getting the bootloader unlocked. Sue me if I'm skeptical that someone, who hasn't really done much of anything for the AHD (no offense), unlocked the bootloader.
If he's truly unlocked, then all he needs to do is snap a photo showing that.
He hasn't produced one yet, so we're all skeptical. Thread should probably be closed until OP can show some proof.

BTW, if the bootloader really gets unlocked, i get rid of my RAZR i in the fastest time possible and get an Atrix HD (I smell CyanogenMod 10.1 or 11 on the future )

OK I have a birthday tomorrow and as a present I am moving on to the Galaxy SII (yes, it's FINALLY my turn to say that!). $199 was too good to refuse, especially with 4 flexpays of $50. Two years of battling the Exhibit are enough, wouldn't you say? Anyway I will miss the forum around here a bit, even though we've had a number of departures over the past year. If it wasn't for the good folks in this community the Exhibit would have been retired LONG ago for me. Frankly without a custom ROM/kernel it is a POS device. No other way to put it! At least we have one or two new guys on the block to carry on for those who still have this phone or just got it. I wish them luck. As for myself I can't wait to try all the things that are available on XDA for this device. Hope I don't flash more ROMs than I did for the Exhibit or I will have no life left, LOL.
Anyway for those who are interested, go here for the deal: http://www.hsn.com/products/samsung-galaxy-sii-no-contract-smartphone-t-mobile/7334966

Thanks man. Unfortunately HSN just raised the price back up to $249, same as they have it on Amazon. Man glad I didn't procrastinate anymore like I always do. Funny thing is I watched the video presentation they did on TV and I'm thinking how many more they could sell if they promoted the fact you can root & get the latest ROMs out there. Of course if they did that people would know they can get rid of that bloatware! Just think of the poor sheep who will just keep stock ICS on it.

I think that rooting is beyond the scope of most people's interest. As it also voids any warranty, the manufacturer would be slightly against HSN promoting the practice, is my guess.

They said 4.0 on the commercial and on the website. A friend of mine has one and it has ICS on it. No matter because it will be rooted and updated when I get it. Question will be whether or not to go with a 4.2.2 rom or KitKat. So many apps need to catch up to ART and the whole 4.4 OS system.

hah hah! Congrats sir on the new phone.
I went ahead and plunked some coin for a Nexus 5. It has some sound bugs (some sound is fine with some apps and not others) and the vibration isn't as strong on key presses (but in other areas is fine and a tester app I found shows the vibration motor is fine). Meh, the speed just kicks butt! Also, having 2G of RAM is ..... awesome. The quad core ... anyway .. you get the idea.
I am still thinking of which ROM to put on ... I had cyanogenmod on my other phone and I loved it ... but they're not quite ready.

Just wanna introduce myself. I'm Matt, and I just picked up my G-Flex yesterday at T-Mobile. This is my first LG but not my first android. I've been rooting, unlocking, modding, theming, bricking, and recovering androids since the DROID 2 days. I'm not claiming to be a dev, but I do know my way around android/ Linux. I am a crack flashing android whore. I was on the RAZR maxx when it came with Gingerbread 2.3.4 and stuck with it through JB 4.1. Moved on to the RAZR HD MAXX on ICS 4.0.4 and followed a couple of the best devs Hashcode and Dan Rosenberg. Was one of the first to profit from Dan's RAZR HD MAXX bootloader exploit. Big props to the first ever to crack a Motorola bootloader.
Shortly after I moved on to the Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-I337. I can't count the soft bricks I recovered from before Loki and Odin files where released. Bad thing was my phone being rooted was able to be my hot spot, so when bricked I had no way to look up or ask questions. But I some how through trial and error recovered.
I now have the G-Flex on T-Mobile and within a few hours of purchase I'm rooted thanks to the IoRoot method. Thanks to the cat that posted the thread on here for that one in this same General Forum section. And needless to say I've already bricked it twice tonight. Just recovered it and got booted back up and set up.
With all that said, I'm not afraid of testing or helping with any development. I'm not afraid of brick, cuz I'm sure with all the talented devs on xda and myself, I will recover.
Luckily I made a back up of my build-props, system, and recovery so I was able to restore and push thru adb. Also wiped cache, dalvik, and system via adb. And reboot back to stock out of the box. But still a little puzzled how I kept root. Not complaining just puzzled.
If there is anyone working on a TWRP or CWM and Loki please message me and let me know what I can do to help. Like I said I'm not a dev and not claiming to be at all. I'm just brave. And mainly don't know where to start with porting a recovery much less Loki. But I can test and I take instruction well.
Hope I can help excited with the potential of the G-Flex....

nice post man:good:
I think we are pretty close to a recovery here, as a few folks are working on it.
Just like any new phone, it takes awhile for it to "catch on"; especially when all the "reviewers" have been slamming this phone for various reasons.
That makes people slow down jumping on it, but this phone is really fantastic, EPIC battery, great display, fastest phone out right now, and, the more that people ignore the idiot reviewers, and grab this thing, the sooner the development will take off.
The "problem" is that it's so awesum stock out of the box, that there isnt a sense of urgency to mod it! :victory:

I have no issues stock with root, i already debloated it and its running like a champ. I have the inverted mms app and am loving my phone right now.

I'm loving it too. I'm rooted still and have installed XPOSED installer with "App Settings", "Xtheme engine beta 5"( with HUE theme) , and "Xblast" I've got the same inverted MMS. And I used APP Settings mod to changed the system UI, stock browser, and MMS ppi to 260. And used HUE theme for that AOSP blue feel. Used xblast for nav bar color change. I like the blue / Vanilla look. I guess that's cuz I'm a product of ICS and motoblur. I'm user android tweaker to speed things up a bit and to smooth out scrolling. And Android Tuner Pro to trim on boot and manage things a little. Snap dragon's Battery guru has always made a substantial difference in battery life, but its still in initial learning so I can't give a review on it for the G-Flex. But can't wait to get custom recovery for it and feel lot more comfortable diving into the modding/theming a good bit more.
I've noticed the stock launcher and settings, well really most the stock lg apps are very similar to Touchwiz. I've already tried out the Google Now launcher and "OK Google" does work from the home screen. You don't have to hit or exe any part of Google to be able to take advantage of the hot word command.

I I'm using an app called WIFI TETHER Beta 3.3. It seems to be working just fine. Doesn't ask or check account for subscription.

Nice post @Matt. You probably seen me over @droidrzr.com , I ran the site for the first two years. I picked up the Gflex for ATT a few days ago.
TBH i love this phone. Yeah, its not running the latest version of Android and it has a few quirks however, the reviews from all over the net are killing this device imo.
Tethering, have you tried the good ole SQL hack just to see?
Sent from my LG-D950 using Tapatalk
fortunately, many of the smarter folks out there, that use XDA, dont pay alot of attention to what a bunch of DB reviewers think about phones..I had a one maxx b4 this, and it too was a great phone, slammed by most reviewers.
this phone is tons of fun, and we're pretty close to custom recovery, and a flood of roms.
Yes I have. The hack with SQL by going to settings storage/settings/ then change the authorization line (forgot exactly what it was called. I would know it if I saw it) from a 1 to a 0? Yeah I went looking for it. The way I understand it is they have figured out how to make that one obsolete. Seems as if its a little deeper into the their end of the monitoring rather than the phone just check account subscription. But I using the good ole "WIFI Tether beta 5" apk from a couple years ago and it seems to work. Hasn't added any more data to my WiFi tether usage. And yeah man I remember you. And droidrzr.com. those were the days when I was a crack flasher and barely knew my way around a RAZR. Don't know how many of those I bricked by not reading you couldn't install custom recovery except safe strap unless you had dev edition. Lmao. The RAZR forums always had cool devs willing to help and teach. I went to the GS4 and wow it was like a an ego fueled pissing contest between the biggest smart a$$e$ on the web. No one seemed to want to help just wanted to argue or try to point out that you don't know crap and they know it all. Glad to be out of their forums. And glad to see all these cats on the g flex forums have all been super cool and helpful.
They way it should be.

Yeah @Matt if your not a complete moron and ask the same question over and over again peeps around here are cool.
Yeah, the razrs where the good ole days lol. I went to the note family about 2 years ago and have a note 3 too. I like the Gflex . The pure fact that we have fastboot access is a good sign. I've been talking to hashcode and a few others to see what van be done.
Also, most of the Gpro xposed stuff work on the Gflex if anyone was wondering.

I came from samsung note 4 and rooting is a breeze! just install custom recovery and flash a kernel you are rooted already!!! but with nexus 6!!!!! jesus christ!!! its like reading thousands of pages for medical examination!!!
download this and that, open terminal command, write those bla bla bla in the command and with one mistake your
hard earned money will be gone!!!!
all posted links are not updated for god sake!, all posted links instructions are hard to understand!!!
anybody here cant explain simple instructions! you have to read 1000 paragraphs to learn simple things!
CANT YOU GIVE SIMPLE INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO UNLOCK BOOTLOADER?
DO I NEED TO RELOCK IT OR MUCH BETTER I WILL TO REMAIN UNLOCK FOR LIFE?
This is the worse phone ever!
So, it's hard to root because you can't one click your way to glory? If you think rooting a Nexus phone is hard, I'd hate to see what it takes to be easy. The only reason there is any difficulty is due to security changes in Android itself.
Sent from my Nexus 6
its extremely easy to root any nexus, as in i have no idea what world youre in.
1. unlock the bootliader via fastboot. the code is fastboot oem unlock. the setting in the developer options has to be set to oem unlock.
2. fastboot flash twrp recovery.
3. flash any custom kernel(for marshmallow) and the latest supersu in your new twrp recovery.
4. reboot and have root.
Wow. No wonder the android community is going to hell in a hand basket. Laziness is just overwhelming. I've rooted every major android phone make out there except for huawei and nexus is the easiest along with Samsung to root. If you don't have patience to read what you need to download then have fun with an unroofed phone. I'm sure if my turtle had opposable thumbs, it could root this phone with ease.

i dont even think that having opposable thumbs is even needed here..
Its easy once you get the hang of it. As said before, changes in android versions make things difficult.
Or, you know, you can use Nexus Root Toolkit and one-click your way to glory.
I would guess its so "hard" because computers are incredibly complex devices that work on the culmination of decades of combined development and advancement, and you are insistent on remaining ignorant.
The command to unlock the bootloader depends on your setup, but is literally just "fastboot oem unlock" or "fastboot flashing unlock"
Then you need to install recovery using 1 other command
then you need to flash a kernel, and supersu.
That is literally it.
If that is too hard for you, you should probably leave it all alone.
Worst phone ever??? What?? I rooted , decrypted, installed custom ROM in 6 minutes. Try that on sammy

This!
Easy guys, the users guide for rooting was like thicker than a thesaurus book if you print it on paper! Long, complicated and un necessary! Cant you produce instruction with image or video and with few bla bla bla!?
by the way just to inform everybody here, i bought a nexus phone because i thought those tech reviewers on youtube are real! Holy cow they are just a paid troll! They lie to us that this phone is ultra fast compared to other android phones in the world and i thought theres no need for me to root it. Because all i want is a fast and responsive phone not mr stutter nexus phone! The performance is comparable to 5$ china android phone! I cant believe it!

No you can't, at least not with older versions that don't know about Marshmallow security stuff.
But that's just good that way, rooting phones and installing stuff was never for the lazy and ignorant, who are not even willing to google stuff first. They just borked their phones with "easy on click" solutions then ran here crying for help.

Also the OP is the epitome of what's wrong with XDA nowadays. He does nothing just bursts in guns blazing, and demands solutions to his problems ASAP or he will break his toys.

You can root Marshmallow just fine with the latest version of NRT.
I used toolkits in the past but once I learned the fastboot commands and got use to them its just as fast if not faster; imo. I feel more confident and accomplished using fastboot; makes me feel more involved.

And brick it with the version before that, that people still try to use, then come here panicking.
The problem with rootkits it that they give people the false security that someone else instead of them knows what he or she is doing. And while it might be the truth, it's only valid until a new version of Android come out with even stronger security measures and people start bricking their phones without any clue why it's happening.
Click -> click -> brick.
I think the best way for you to root is just to go outside dig a hole in the ground and bury your phone right there.. Sit down just wait a week or so until it catches root and your golden.
On a serious note.. Go away. people like you OP really tingle my fist reflex .
