Hey, everyone. I have a question about the hardware keyboard of the Droid 4. First, let me familiarize you with my problem. It's the same problem I had on the Droid 3, and now on my Droid 4. If you press two keys simultaneously, neither register at all for input, or only one of the keys will register. Now, this doesn't apply to all keys; it seems that you can simultaneously press keys and have both register as long as the keys are a sufficient distance apart physically. I'm sure there's a reason for this that I'm not aware of, besides the keys just being far apart. Also, you CAN hold one key and THEN press another and have them both register properly, but I'm trying to instantly press two keys simultaneously and get the proper response.
Is this a hardware issue or a software issue? I wonder if it is a limitation of Gingerbread, so if anyone is running an ICS ROM, could you test this for me? If you press the W and Q keys at the exact same time, do you get both letters? Try it with two fingers just to make sure you're pressing them simultaneously. If anyone can help me or provide information or a solution to this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
Oh, and in case you are wondering, I want to be able to press two keys at once in order to play games using the keyboard more effectively.
EDIT: I've been messing around with the keyboard, and it seems like any two buttons can be pressed simultaneously as long as they aren't right next to one another physically. To me this suggests that there's some kind of feature on the hardware keyboard that prevents the user from accidentally pressing a button next to the one they intended to press, since the keys are so small. If that's the case, is there some way to disable this feature? I'm just making educated guesses at this point, hoping it isn't a hardware issue. Patiently awaiting a response...
Seems to work for me, I'm on AOKP.
BTW, many keyboards have this issue, even laptops and desktops. However in this case, the issue seems to be software...
Thanks a lot for the response, podspi. I plan to wait for the official ICS rom from Moto, so can you direct me to any possible resources that might fix the issue on my current ROM? I'm running the latest official firmware from Motorola.
Just tried it out, stock doesn't allow you to hit two buttons at once. I honestly really would recommend installing safestrap, and getting an ICS build like AOKP if this is really important to you.
There might be a way to get this functionality under stock GB, but I sadly have no idea where to even start with that

The other day all the hardware buttons on my ATT Tilt stopped working - just power and camera would work. The rest would do nothing except sometimes the dpad would open the start menu. I couldn't even answer the phone as the green button wouldn't work. The keyboard would not work either which made email a pain. I did not drop it in water, it just stopped working.
Tonight I loaded the trial of AE Button Plus - google or search XDA for their site. I reprogrammed all the outside buttons on my tilt back to their original use (not hard at all) and even upgraded a few buttons. Now all my buttons work great and the keyboard even stared working again!!!!!
I am not affiliated with them at all, but I saw some others of you with my problem. This is a much cheaper solution than getting another phone. To buy the program it is about $7, but there is a 14 day trial so you can see if it works for you. I was about to replace/upgrade - but now I can keep usingg this awesome machine!
(I do notice some minor lag sometimes with the buttons - but just being able to use them again is well worth it for me!)
Will
hard reset?
if the issue was fixable after installing some software (ae button plus), then i guess a hard reset would have worked also...or better yet, flash another ROM while you're at it, preferably one that is cooked to a medium golden-brown texture by the finest chefs this side of cyberspace...
<Drooling-Like-Homer>MMMMMMMMM ROMMMMMGHGHGHGH !!!</Drooling-Like-Homer>
Maybe I was didn't say it well enough...
It is funny that a software fix would work, my guess is a hardware problem with the phone, but the software is a workaround for it. They keypresses were there, the phone just didn't know how to handle them. If it was a driver issue - one of the roms should have fixed it.
Maybe I was not clear in the first post, but the buttons did not work. When you pushed the power button, keys 'wszx' would type in the phone - evidenced by it searching for a contact that matched every time it powered up - power button or slideing the keyboard out. The only button that worked normal was the camera button. They keyboard was completely unusable - no response on the machine. Soft buttons = nada.
First I tried a hard reset then I flashed at least 8 roms and about 6 radios. Nothing worked. Even started a post on a touchscreen only rom and basically found what would work without buttons.
In my search for the fix in the last two weeks, I basically came to the conclusion a new phone was in order. Now I have a bit more time
Hi all, please can you help me with this!?
Firstly when my phone boots or is taken out of sleep mode it immediately activates voice record as if this button has been pressed. It then opens the dialler and types ‘EDFC’. If I open pocket word and then wake the phone up it also types ‘EDFC’ before doing the above.
My keyboard is not working and the only hardware buttons that function are the power button (only for a while), the camera button and the silver select button in the middle of the d-pad. The jog wheel and silver directional d-pad buttons occasionally come to life. The others don’t work (green call and red end buttons, ok, windows etc).
When I use the standard keyboard SIP on the screen the directional buttons and delete do not function?!
I’ve reverted to a stock ROM to make sure this isn’t the problem.
It appears as though my Kaiser thinks these buttons are being depressed, but I’ve checked them and they click normally and release when pressed (even though they don’t perform a function) so nothing is stuck down etc….
I’m going to use AE Buttons to try and unhinge the button functions for now, but it would be great if someone has any suggestions!!
Thanks in advance.
Update - AE Button won't unhinge the buttons or change their function to anything else (e.g. nothing). I can't stop this from happening every time the phone boots/wakes up!
Help!
Mine got the same symptoms last week except it opens quick something or other, and then the dialler dials 2547.The screen for my pin then comes up,which I can enter normally.Home screen fires up normally but the keyboard will not work or any buttons except the silver one in the middle.Searched a bit and this problem is very common although I cannot find a solution anywhere. Can someone please help
AE button didn't work?
When mine did that, I reset all the hardware buttons (not the keyboard, just the buttons reachable from the outside. A soft reset and viola!
That's the only solution I have. It's worked for me 2x.
Also try pulling the battery for 20 seconds or so and restarting. That has fixed my touchscreen not working after it gets spashed 3x. Yeah, my phone is old and abused, but keeps working.

Thanks for your replies - I've got Orange sending me another one in the morning now and sods law it's just stopped happening.... Taking the replacement anyway in case it happens again.
For my knowledge, how did you reset the buttons? I deleted some registry keys to completely stop them working (although I couldn't find the registry keys for the red and green buttons).
Searching on Google there are quite a few reports of this, but no one has ever posted the cause!
I am having the same problem... please help. My phone is going crazy. I did a hard reset but still didnt solve the problem....
I am also having this issue. Phone starts typing EDFC and then initiates the voice recorder. I reflashed various ROMs and regardless of what was flashed.. initially they appeared okay, then it started happening again. I also tried hard and soft resets. Nothng has worked so far.
I resorted to disabling the keys and some of the applications which I dont use which appear to be getting started/run (Voice recorder for one). So far I havent had the issue, knock on wood.
I think this is more than likely a hardware error. My tilt is actually pretty old so I wouldnt be surprised. If someone finds either the cause or a workable solution please post. Im trying to hold off until January when my contact expires to get a new HTC.
I searched and searched but found no solution for this and ended up getting the phone replaced.
HTC seemed to know nothing of such a problem....
Have you tried whacking it?!!?
Hope you get it sorted.

Hmm, yes, but I don't see how that helped my phone.
lol, all jokes aside, my friends, I ask in this thread as well,
what is causing this problem? I ran into this issue after ALL my buttons stopped working (except for the power).
I installed a new rom (I forget which one), and still nothing works except for power button.
It would be even better if someone knows the solution!
-Calling for Help-I'm still convinced it is a software/registry problem...
Okay, so there's no solution available for this weird problem of ours.
On the bright side, however, it is amazing that we can still use the phone, even after it requires servicing (some way or another). I have accepted this handicap that has been placed on my phone for now, simply hoping it will grow out of it one day.
But something isn't right. When I looked in the registry (trying to follow some directions I found within the wiki for when your keyboard STILL doesn't work properly), there was a discrepancy between what was supposed to be found in the registry and what was actually there. It wasn't that the values were wrong, it was the names of the values that were different. Why could this be?
Or even if you have moment of time, and you have an AT&T Tilt, and it works perfectly, maybe you could write up a run down of what you have hanging around in that section of the registry?
Hey, just so I can be sure, is there some place I can cross check what I have in my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP with what is supposed to be there in a fully functioning AT&T Tilt?
Well I currently have a rooted g1 phone, but it is completely useless. Every time I use the keyboard or any keys on the phone(Menu,Home, Power, action, call) button. the buttons were programmed to like press other stuff, for example I press the menu button and it turns off my phone, if I press "I" on my keyboard it erases everything. And If I press the end button it automatically types" u345". What exactly is this? Is this a physical issue? or Is the g1 itself that is messed up? I can barely use the phone! All the buttons type different stuff?!! please help! Hardware problem? or Physical? And idea's of fixing, thanks for reading.
I have a similar problem but not as severe. Almost all buttons work ok, just the buttons in the middle of the hw keyboard like y, h, b and space sometimes print other stuff, b sometimes writes a few characters and opens up the search, n sometimes writes some characters with an 'enter' in between etc. and these random outputs are usually the same, ie I get the same stuff by pressing b over n over again. They work fine after some pressing, and I've noticed if I press these keys immediately after pressing something else, they work fine. The problems has persisted through rooting, flashing, radio change, bootloader change etc. Anyone know what this problem is? Is it a hardware issue should I get it checked? The hardware guys here charge so much I have to be sure before I take this to them. Any way I can correct it myself? Any help would be appreciated.
Your best bet to completely wipe and reflash a stable rom (like Super-D). If problem persists - you have a hardware problem. Sounds like water damage to me to be honest.
First of all, thanks for the devs' great work on getting ICS to the i9000. After trying 2 different kernels, I experience a persisting problem with the physical keys on the device. The home button is not working at all (no response in debug mode in recovery) and instead the back button is set to "home".
I've tried using buttonremapper (both versions) and managed to get the back button working properly, but the app doesn't seem to recognize the home button as even existing.
The mapping in both kernels was off, but in a different way (in one kernel, the volume up and down buttons were swapped, but not in the other).
I've tried re-flashing 3 times while wiping all data cache folders, but without luck. I must admit, I havn't read through the 550+ pages on the ROM threads, but using search I could not find an answer and the problem did not seem to be widely known.
Anyone out there who can enlighten me? Thanks in advance.
Are you sure you have an I9000? I've heard that some of the variants (captivate) have the physical buttons mapped differently
Hi,
First time poster as I've only just registered but I've been playing with the ROMs that Stona, SamerD, Anders, Lexmaster et al have been posting. Big thanks to you guys for putting together these ROMs.
I was a bit confused about the differences and advantages of one ROM over another. At the moment I've installing them and finding out which one I like the most. I'm actually a massive fan of Sense but those ROMs all share the problem of muting the call whenever a message or other notification comes through. So I've had to move to one of the others. I've been using Evervolv for a while and really like it. It seems fast and pretty good. I use my headphones to listening to music so all the AOKP ones are currently having issues. It would be good if there was some comparison between ROMs. I was planning to do something myself, e.g. a table with features, but then got distracted.
Anyway, to another point. I've ordered a new Power button for my phone. Under a number of the ROMS, Stona, SamerD, and Evervolv it doesn't lock or unlock my screen (thus why I've bought a new power button). However, I've got Vanilla Rootbox on there at the moment and the button seems to work most of the time. What it doesn't do though is bring up the power off menu when I hold the button in. I'm running CWM recovery and used the advanced function to do a key test. It outputs a code with the up/down buttons and the other keys but not the power button.
Has anyone else seen power button issues that change dependent upon ROM? I'm having to rely on volume wake or plugging into USB if it goes off to get the screen back.
Thanks.
Broken powerbutton?

Now I'm no pro but I'd say that your power buttton is broken. I've tried most of the above roms and had no such issue
I have tried pretty much every rom here except Paranoid android(gonna try of course) and never had such a problem.
