I have to be missing something somewhere. Following instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2300132
I get my HD+ to boot to the sdcard. In recovery I install cm10.1 and gapps. Both run successfully(or at least say they do). I reboot and it just goes back to recovery. I've gone thru everything over and over and I have no idea what I can be doing wrong. All I can do it boot to recovery or stock.
Please help!

I've flashed roms before on various devices and it seems to me that its happening too fast(about 10seconds). Could be wrong tho.

That is too fast. It means that it is failing and not giving you an error message.
Did the SD boot twice when you first booted it? It does that when it creates the partitions. If you had a ROM on the SD before it would not do that. It sounds to me like it did not set the partitions right.
Start over by getting SDFormatter free on the web, doing a full format with overwrite and size adjustment, and reburning. Then reboot and see if it boots twice.
If it does, then reflash and see if it takes longer.

It didn't boot twice. I thought that might be the problem but this was a brand new sdcard.
I'll try SDFormatter and report back.

Well, that should be working. After you reburn and reboot, look at the SD with MiniTool partition wizard (also free) and see if it is partitioned.

Burn it again. Sometimes the burn does not take right. Also try plugging the cable into your PC when trying to boot. You may have one of those HD+'s that does not boot to SD reliably. If that is the case you may want to move to verygreen's emmc version. But that replaces stock, so you may not want that.

Yes, but those stubborn HD+'s do eventually boot to SD, just not reliably. It may boot once in 10 tries. That is the case with the device I am typing on. The only solution I know for them is to return it and hope you get a better one, or run stock or CM10.1 on emmc.
If you want to do it, follow the dummies guide in general and do everything, including flashing the emmc CWM, in one session. That way you never have to boot to SD again.

No, the only advantage I know is the nook reader is better. But not good enough to justify keeping stock.
And of course warranty. If you install CM10.1 to emmc, be sure to follow the advice to back up stock first in case you have warranty problems and need to go back.

I don't even use the nook reader. Been using Aldiko for years. I might have to just bite the bullet and install CM10.1 to emmc. I liked the idea of dual booting but if its going to be a pain to boot to the sdcard every time its not worth it. Plus I know the performance will be better running from emmc over sdcard.
Thanks for all your help
I started reading the Installing CyanogenMod 10.1 for Dummies post and it mentioned to use Win32DiskImager. I reburned the sdcard using that and now its booting to the sdcard again. I guess it was a problem with Winimage writing the sdcard.
I got CM10.1 installed to the sdcard and its booting to it right now. How long should it take to boot the first time? Been over 5 minutes at the loading screen.

The first time, a little while, minutes. Try shutting it off and rebooting again. If it sticks the second time, it probably means the /data folder did not create properly on internal memory. Is your stock rooted?

ok! I reimaged the sdcard again. This time it took way longer to flash the rom and gapps. I'm finally into CM10.1!! WHOOP!
Thanks again for all your help.
Installed "NookHDplus-CWM-6028-for-internal-memory-rev0-(05.24.13).zip" and I am able to to hold power and n buttons to get into CWM recovery, but if I let the nook HD+ boot up into stock rom, recovery reverts back to stock recovery. I have repeated this several times, flashed CWM recovery to emmc and after boot up it reverts back to stock recovery.
I guess my question is, it appears that the nook HD+ stock checks boot and restores stock recovery on bootup. Is this the case? And how can this be prevented? I have no problem booting CWM recovery from SD, but would rather have CWM recovery permanent in emmc.
I don't know why that is happening to you but I can tell you my HD+ does not do that. I have CWM installed and it does not reflash.

Stock does have a mechanism built in where it can rebuild stock recovery if it thinks it is necessary. That is how it installs the new stock recovery after an update to the stock ROM.
I'm not sure I have tried my internal CWM when running stock on emmc. Why do you want CWM on internal if you are running stock? There is generally nothing to flash after the initial set of mods are done. And stock needs the stock recovery to be able to update itself if need be.

That is not a bad idea, but I'm not sure stock will let you do that.
Have you added any of my zips to stock before you put CWM on internal memory? If you flash either extras or root to stock, it should remove the ability of stock to rebuild stock recovery. The file is in /system/etc/install-recovery.sh. I reuse that file for my purposes by symlinking a new version.

That;s exactly the same reason I am trying to put CWM recovery on stock. Just a convienience for backup/restore, but keeps reverting back to stock recovery after I bootup into stock nook. The only think I can add, is that this is a brand new HD+ with the latest software update.

I can verify that I have not flashed extras or root, and that makes perfect sense, that was my next step to see if if would stop it from rebuilding stock recovery. Thanks for the help, I appreciate the info.
I did flash both your extras and root. I have made backups I guess now I need to test them to see if they work. I am currently running rooted stock and boot able CM on an SD card. Both work really well.

Besides mine being just slightly older than verygreen's, mine has been modified to protect any hybrid files that may be on internal memory. Verygreen's does not. That way if you choose to run hybrid on SD, it will not be effected by any CWM actions you take on emmc. That is more important to users that run stock on emmc and hybrid CM10.1 on SD.

Hello,
Kudos to all the nice folks here for the CM mod and updates.
My Nook HD+ has battery issues and was told to send it back to B&N. I took a backup of the stock ROM before installing CM but I'm unable to find it :crying:
I've searched a lot for this and would really really appreciate a link to download the ROM and copy to the microSD card.
I believe I just need the "clockworkmod" folder on the microSD card, right? If not, it would be great to have quick steps.
Thanks again for your time..
You can get the plain stock zip that is flashable with CWM from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. Item 6. That will take you back to pure stock so you can deal with B&N.

Thanks a lot for your prompt response, leapinlar.
I downloaded "NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6028-for-stock-4GB-rev4-(05.15.13).zip" and extracted it to get "NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6028-for-stock-4GB-rev4-(05.15.13).img" which I burned to the microSD card using "Win32DiskImager"
And then, I copied "NookHDplus-factory-2.1.1-plain-stock.zip" file to the card. I tried inserting this card to the Nook HD+ device but it just boots to CM instead of showing options to restore.
I believe I'm missing something. I'm so sorry to bother you but would greatly appreciate if you could spare a few moments to point me in the right direction. It would be immensely helpful.
Thanks so much again for responding.

Thanks again, leapinlar.
I tried the alternate procedure and did the following:
1. Used "SDFormatter" to format the card and used "EaseUS Partition Master" to make the single partition on the microSD card "active"
2. Copied files making sure to copy "MLO" file first before copying the rest. (Please refer to attachment for the files that were in the card)
I was able to complete the "install from SD card" option and it finished with the following message:
Code:
Random Offset: 0xcb
Boot Files...
Boot Files...
Install Complete.
When I tried rebooting the device, Nook HD+ seems to load stock but gets stuck at 99% forever. Not sure how to proceed now. Can I just go ahead and return the device or should I bring it to working condition?
Thanks again for sparing your time, leapinlar.. Greatly appreciate it.

Hi. I am selling my nook hd+ and would like to restore the B&N stock rom. I am running CM 10.1 stable. Based on this thread and leapinlar's advice in his CWM thread, I have the following steps:
1. Place the backed-up nook rom zip in the CWM folder.
2. Reboot into CWM recovery
3. Wipe data and rom
4. Flash the stock zip file
Based on leapinlar's advice in his CWM thread, it is my understanding that flashing the zip will fully restore the unit to stock rom, including stock recovery. Is that correct?
EDIT: Sorry, but perhaps I was mistaken. The stock rom zip has to be loaded on the bootable CWM sd card?
Appreciate all input. Thank you.

Restoring the backup will only do the ROM and not recovery. You must flash the plain stock zip if you want both replaced. And yes, you copy the zip to the SD. And just do the factory reset, no other wiping.

Hello guys, I would just like to add to this- I actually wanted to restore to stock rom as well.
I remember using the img burn method as outlined before to get to cwm recovery. I actually tried the new method involving just formatting and copying the 5 boot files and copying the zips as well. However, with the sd card in the slot, the device just boots to the stock rom.
From reading leapinlar's guide, I remember saying that it will take about 10 boots to boot into cwm recovery- however, I did over 15 times now and with no success- is there any other way to get to recovery mode quicker?
I actually ended up running into TWRP recovery and there did the flashing of stock rom, but it didn't get rid of the cyanoboot screen- I think I need to go through one more factory reset in order to get rid of the boot screen, and therefore will need to access the cwm recovery.
Any help will be appreciated. thanks

yes! I actually flashed the rooted stock. So then the next question I have is- is it possible to have no cyanoboot logo yet have the device rooted?
also, I am still wondering as to why the cwm recovery is not showing up when I use my sd. is the method using img recovery still valid?

Yes, my root methods before rev3 used the old way of rooting, without the revised boot.img. But those versions did not have the /system file protection removed. But I removed it from my site when I published rev3.
And yes the CWM SD is still valid using both methods. But sometimes the img method is harder to achieve.

That is correct, there is no cyanoboot logo with rev2. And rev2 works perfectly as root.
What I mean by no removed file protection is that with rev2 you cannot change any files in /system without it being detected and on the next boot it resetting itself to pure stock with no root. With rev3 that file protection for /system is removed, but it shows the cyanoboot logo. It is a trade off.
If you want rev2 I can repost the link.

the nook hd is used by my five year old and i heard her saying i am going to wipe minecraft
didnt think anything of it and tonight i powered up the nook and it has gone back to completely stock firmware
would the erase and wipe from the menu return it to stock even though cm was installed?
was i very lucky ? i didnt have a back up of the nook hd but i do have a back up of the hd+

I'm not sure what you mean by the permanent sd card method. Do you mean using an sd card to install CM permanently to internal memory? If that is what you meant and you did not install CWM to internal memory, then it is possible that she did something to make it fail on boot and keep trying and the 8 failed boot procedure would kick in and reset the device to stock. The 8 failed boot reset fails if you have CWM on internal memory.

hi
i used this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317500
didnt know about the 8 failed boot method , the nook was the wrong way round in the case and everytime it booted the power button was shutting it off
so it looks like its gone back to stock that way
ah i understand now , re reading the guide the cwm doesnt get installed to the internal memory only stays on the sd card
pretty handy for people wanting to get back to stock easily

If you read the guide carefully you will see that CWM does get installed on internal memory. It says to download and install three files and one of those three is CWM for internal.

Hello,
i am new here and have a big problem ..
i have a nook hd+ with cyanogenmod cm11.
the update worked great and everything was fine. i used some nightly updates.
after one the boot sequence was really slow and android was nearly unusable.
i updated the cwm recovery to v6.0.4.5 and nothing where flashable anymore.
can not change the cwm update or downgrade
can not flash the android
bootloop
with a bootable cwm 28 (to stock) it was also impossible to flash the factory rom .
it showed a random offset and installation failed. (see image)
what can i do ? i tried it so often and nothing help.

Download the newer plain stock 2.2.0 and try to flash that one. But before you flash go to mounts and storage and format /system.

Try flashing the stock recovery from item 5 and then try doing the 8 failed boot procedule. Just interrupt the boot by holding the power key for several seconds until it powers off. Do this 8 times in a row and on the next boot it should try to reset itself to pure stock.

thanx.. the problem is that i cant flash any recovery.
after install from .zip, cwm 6.0.4.5 tell me "done". but when i boot into recover it is still the same.
so the 8 times boot technique didnt worked for me.
i am going mad a little... :cyclops:
close to throw that nice thing out of the window. damn.

Sounds like it is bricked. You might as well throw it out the window.

Did you try flashing recovery from SD-based (rather than your current internal emmc) recovery?

Sounds like a nightmare...
So, I've had my nook hd+ for over a year and I'm finally considering rooting and installing cyanogen... but this post has left me fearful of bricking my nook, while it's a little old now, I still need it for school, work, etc... Is there anything in particular that the poster did wrong that I myself should avoid? I want to know that I can safely restore to stock if necessary and I've read the materials and watched videos to feel relatively comfortable... but then I read this lol. Also, I've been wondering how you create a duel boot disc so I could maintain stock unscathed internally and be able to have all the advantages of cyanogen and android when I have a sd card inserted? I've seen that some pay for sd cards out there do this but haven't had any luck finding a tutorial for that itself? Thanks for any info, I really appreciate it.
P.S. to the original poster, I'm super sorry about your nook, that sounds like it sucks.

I would say his mistake was choosing CM11. Many CM11 users have reported bricking. Even some users running CM11 on SD have reported emmc bricking since even SD installs use a little of emmc (/cache). I recommend CM10.1.3 stable. I can't think of anyone bricking with that. Go to the dummies guide linked in my signature for instructions.
