[Q] Queries regarding bootstrap, safestrap, ROM flashing - Motorola Droid 3

I had some doubts regarding bootstrap and safestrap.
Yes, I have gone through various posts and questions that are already in the forum, but I'm still a little confused about the actual process of flashing a ROM on the Droid 3.
I'm familiar with the Galaxy S II's methods of flashing and rooting.
I was wondering if the process is similar?
My questions:
1. What is a safestrap?
2. What is a bootstrap?
3. What are the differences between the two?
4. What is the general instruction regarding ROM flashing?
5. Do different ROMs have different flashing methods?
EDIT:
6. Are MIUI and CM7 ROMs available?
Also, please recommend a few ROMs that are regularly updated.
Thanks!

1) You can boot into safestrap and like clockworkmod you can wipe or install ZIP etc. Difference is with safestrap you can enable "safesystem" which will backup your current ROM (by saving /data I think?). This way you can always return to your stock ROM by turning off safesystem.
2) Bootstrap is like safestrap but without the safesystem.
3) ^
4) 1) root, 2) install either bootstrap or safestrap, 3) wipe data, 4) install ZIP
5) Some require safestrap but it'll probably be noted if it does. Otherwise it's pretty much the same
6) CM7 is, but because android 4.0 came along, it was never 100% finished. It works fine though. I think someone started MIUI port but never heard from it again
I'm currently using MAVROM and i think it's one of the best GB roms, so thats what I'd recommend:

CM7 can be found here, and there's a link on that page to Safestrap downloads as well. Just make sure to grab the one for the Droid 3.
Do check up on whats not working with CM7.. You might wanna use maverick rom instead

Introduction
Welcome to the Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Help Thread. The purpose of this thread is to gather all relevant information into one area, avoiding clutter of the Q&A section.
This thread was started by @azzledazzle, and kept alive by the good grace of @ThaiDai. It has now been reworked to reflect the current status of the device, with a FAQ completely redone from scratch.
I did add noob friendly again to the title, with the following statement in consideration:
Asking questions without first reading the this post and the FAQ will get you shunned and/or ignored.
Before posting for assistance, you are asked to first read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) below, and do Search of the forum using the XDA search feature. As far as I am concerned, there are no stupid questions. However, with this statement in mind, XDA is a development community that requires you attempt to search and find your answer before posting.
NO BEST ROM OR KERNEL QUESTIONS IN THIS THREAD.
WARNING:
The Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 can be hardware bricked by various things you might do, because most devices have a faulty chip (called eMMC) inside. This leads to the possibility to kill your device with some commands used in the recovery mechanisms. As such, it is imperative that you act with the utmost care before flashing any custom ROMs or attempting to obtain Root Access.
To ensure you do not destroy your expensive device, please follow the warnings in the sticky threads, read the introductions of each Custom ROM, and follow these general guidelines:
Never do a factory reset on stock ICS ROM (4.0.4) (Click here for more information).
Never use the cwm.zip, i.e., called temporary recovery which still is shared on some websites (Click here for more information).
Always use safe kernels for recovery activities (Click here for more information).

FAQ: SIM Unlocking and Device Tools
Q: Is there an all-in-one thread with tools for our device?
Yes and no. There is a great toolbox thread Found Here, but many parts of it are outdated.
Q: I installed custom ROM firmware, and now I have a "Yellow Triangle". Can I remove it?
A: Yes. There are two options: (1) use Triangle Away by @Chainfire (free on XDA) if you are able to boot into a ROM; or (2) Use the USB Jig Method (LINK)
Q: My device is SIM Locked, or became locked after flashing a new ROM firmware.
A: Download Galaxy S Unlock from the Play Store
Q: What is my EFS and should I back it up?
A: The EFS stores your IMEI and other information. It is crucial to back it up, as it is extremely difficult to recover if lost during a custom ROM flash. Backup your EFS (using kTool)

FAQ: Hardware and Connectivity Issues
Q: I am getting poor reception and/or data timeouts; can anything be done?
A: you can try flashing a different modem (baseband) from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25890442
Q: I am getting NO reception, help!
A: MARKER - bad IMEI or wrong network
Q: I am getting cellular reception but my data doesn't work, how can I fix this?
A: MARKER - bad APN
Q: I am getting poor battery life, and/or my screen flickers; what can I do?
A: there are two possible scenarios:
(1) You have kernel wake locks caused by a "rogue app", which can be addressed in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31352080
(2) If your battery is over a year old, it probably needs to be replaced. This is especially evident if your screen flickers when the battery is low, and/or the battery itself is actually bulging. Many people are satisfied with the Anker brand batteries sold on Amazon.com.
Q: Why is my phone NOT CHARGING properly, and why does wiggling the cable make it charge?
A: There are two potential problems:
(1) You need to clean your USB socket. Please look at this thread for more information: MARKER
(2) You need to replace your DC-In board. Please look at this thread for more information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45319225

1. Reviews will be inside the ROMs thread, some ROMs have video reviews in the OP, so that would be a good place to check, see what the users have to say.
2. What do you mean by OTA update ? Do you mean official Samsung OTA, Or has Criskelo tweaked the OTA to update his ROM versions? Anyway, You shouldnt use stock OTA's on Custom ROMs, If Criskelo has tweaked the OTA to update his ROMs then it should work, Thats something only he will know.
3. Stock OTA's *can* remove root, Just simply re-root if that is the case (tip: SuperUser has an OTA survival mode - Experimental)
4. Pop up play app - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686165&highlight=pop+up+play

-My kies getting this and this msg, / It says This firmware can't updated
-If i update manually, what happens when my country gets update? will I be still get update?
-If i update this ROM, May I still get JB?
-I can access system file but cant modify it

It *Can* be done, But it has mixed reviews, Theres a lot of risk involved and ODIN is not official for Mac, Only Modified.
For mac users, Heimdall seems to be the safest way. So i would suggest to learn and use that (or get a windows PC ) to avoid the risk of bricking your Note

Actually when I installed criskelo ROM v9 the initial set up wanted me to opt for OTA update. I was surprised for this didn't happen for v7 , v8 so i wanted to know whats the fuss. Some at the criskelo development thread made it crystal clear that stock ROM will not get OTA update.
Thank you
This question has probably been asked a thousand times in this section, but it would be good to have 1 Correct answer on this.
Since the Note has the eMMC Brick Bug on the Stock ICS kernel, how does one Successfully flash a Custom ROM using CWM without a chance of Superbricking the device?
And also some clarification an why you should flash Abyss 4.2 lernel before performing a full wipe.

To flash a Custom ROM (and avoid BrickBug) you must first flash a safe kernel, You can do this either in CWM or ODIN, People recommend Abyss kernel because it is / was popular and known to be safe, However most kernels now are safe, But make sure you check before hand.
I always use speedmod or any Kernel derived from Speedmod.
If you have CWM already, Download a Safe Kernel (CWM Version) place it on your SD card and reboot to CWM Recovery and install it.
If you prefer ODIN, Download the Kernel (ODIN Version) Open up ODIN, Find the Kernel in PDA section, Connect phone in Download Mode and hit start.
You can also use Mobile ODIN too.
Hope this helps
Inspire to Note noob
Ok...I used to switch roms on a daily basis on the Inspire/Desire platform. Now I've had my Note GT-N7000 for months now and I've REALLY been itching to get the latest ICS since I'm still on stock 2.3.6. My CSC is KK2 (TPA) from 1saleaday.com. I live in the US...not Panama...so I'm thinking that there's a fat chance of me getting the ICS update OTA. Is that a fair assumption? If not...I can possibly wait for another week or so. I've been checking Kies on a daily basis...no update for me. Is there a noob friendly guide that can show me step by step how to get the latest stock ICS by rooting? I've read Dr. Ketan's post...kinda confusing. I don't want to lay a brick. Is there a way I can install the stock Germany rom and change my CSC to Germany or something and be able to receive the update on Kies to make sure I don't foul it up? I'm pretty afraid that I'm going to forget...and accidentally restore to factory settings or something when JB comes out and have a brick.
It's possible to use the German version, since they have android 4.0.4 already, you may need to flash a different radio too, It depends if you want to stay stock or not.
If you download the required odin firmware along with odin itself, then place the file in PDA section, if the firmware comes in 3 files then add them to their respective sections, such as phone, pda, csc.
You may be able to get csc from a firmware for your region and replace the German one with it.
Then put phone in download mode, connect to pc and hit start.
I'd also advise you to flash a safe kernel straight after the firmware to make full wipes safe.
If you flash speedmod kernel you will be rooted with Cwm and safe from brick bug, then the choice is yours whether to stay stock or move onto something custom

Hello there, hope you are having a nice day
hope this is not a wrong place to ask..
i have got two questions.
1)I'm actually on stock ICS 4.0.4 rooted and im planning to venture into custom ROM world to be precise the CM9 ones, please guide or point me through.
(Why CM9 you may ask it is related with Question 2.)
2)I'm having idea of connecting a USB Webcam into my note, this feature will be very very useful in my work. Please guide me on this..
( i have done a lot of googling, the nearest i can get was this https://bitbucket.org/neuralassembly/simplewebcam/overview, being a super noob myself im actually lost on this. But im not giving up.

1, To flash a CM9 Based ROM you will need to revert back to GB - So grab a stock GB firmware (links on FAQ section, 2nd post) Flash it via Odin, then flash a kernel (abyss / Speedmod) do full wipe, then flash the CM9 ROM in recovery.
2. Im not sure how that would work, I did recall someone else trying to do this (maybe it was you?) as the webcam would require some sort of power supply and i dont think the phone is capable of that. Anyway, Cant you just use the FFC instead ? I know its not perfect but its better than carrying an already big phone around with a big webcam attached to it lol. (people will think your a Martian from another planet)
I hope I may post my question concerning bricked or not here. If not, please be nice to me
I was on ICS LQ2, Goatrip Custom ROM with Goku Kernel. Yesterday I tried to flash GB before flashing a different custom ROM (didn't come that far).
I tried to flash the KK9 Stock GB ROM from the Stock Thread here (one file .tar.md5, Repartition _un_ticked). Flash stopped at several percent flashing factoryfs and nothing happend anymore. I pulled battery and tried again, no success. Now battery ran out and the Note is not charging as the only thing it say is "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue...". I cannot enter recovery, nor download modus as battery is low (download should work with charged battery). I am buying an external charging station later the day to revive the battery.
Is there a chance I bricked the device or is it just a bad flash (why?) which can be solved with a new flash? What do you say? I thought I cannot brick it with Odin, just by doing a factory reset in recovery with an unsafe kernel?
Your welcome to ask any question you like here This is why i created it.
You can brick with ODIN, you run the risk of damage by making any modifications, Usually getting stuck on Factoryfs is not a good sign - but we cannot confirm you have a brick until your battery is charged.
When you get the battery, report back and let me know if you can get into Download mode, If you can, We can fix this
You shouldnt have encountered any issues with a GB firmware, Did you have the Firmware in the correct section of ODIN ? along with NO pit, NO repartition ?
Well I should have put it into the right section in Odin, as it was not my first time I used Odin and normally I check at least twice that everything is alright. I am absolute sure about NO pit and NO repartition. BTW: this goatrip custom ROM used a pit as I flashed it previously. Does this maybe cause the trouble?
I already downloaded a pre-rooted GB from here, three parts this time and I will give it a try this evening. My hopes for download mode are good, as pressing Vol-Down resultings in the "can't download, bat low" message, but I will see later.
Thanks for your help, I hope I will get it running again.
Well the phone IS responding to download mode so that is good news. However using pit files with out repartitioning is not something you want to make a habit of.
Theres a chance that could have caused some issues, If you do use pit files you should tick the re-partition box, But also be sure that you are using the correct pit files, i.e 16gb / 32gb
You should be ok to flash a full stock GB firmware, 9 out of 10 times it fixes everything So make sure to report back and let us know
Good luck :good:

[Q] Need help with my 4x

hi
first of all i apologize for my retarded questions , but i'm late to the android party as this is my first droid
Loving the phone so far other than the horrible battery life that's why i thought about roms and kernels , but then i got very confused and i have a few questions.
Do all roms require root or unlocked bootloader ?
I read a thread saying that the new cyanogenmod is rooted , Does that mean that it automatically root the device? , if so how do i install it exactly ?
Do i need root to install kernels ? do i have to install a kernel with a specific rom ? can i install a customized kernel on official rom ?
I read someone saying that i need to wipe cash before installing a rom , again how do i do that ?
Sorry i asked so many questions but i tried to read about it and i got overwhelmed , if there are any guides that i missed kindly point me to it and i'll be glad if anyone can recommend a rom and a kernel for improved gaming and battery life
thanks a lot
please bear in mind that i have no idea what adb is or kdz or any of this stuff , i hate myself right now
There are many wonderful guides for all of your information just a few clicks away.. But anyhow..
1. Stock roms - firmware (from LG) do not require rooted and unlocked device.
2. Yes, CM is already rooted.
3. First you need to upgrade your phone to 4.1 (v20a) Jelly Bean Android, root it and then unlock bootloader. After that, you have to install a recovery like CWM or TWPR so that you will be able to install roms, do backups, restore, wipe partitions etc. Easiest way to get CWM for example, is to install it via Rom Manager app.
4. Yes and unlocked BL.
5. Every rom has it's own kernel already but you can install a different one. (Which must be compatible of course and made for the device specifically)
6. Yes, but only on a rooted and unlocked device.
7. It's advised/needed to wipe CACHE not cash hehe which can easily be done by selecting "wipe cache partition" in CWM (recovery mode)
About roms, I would recommend either CM 10.1 RC1 + WerewolfJB kernel or just WerewolfJB which already has that kernel installed. (There are also some other nice roms and kernels but I did not try them yet so I cannot tell you. I just tried those 2 and they are great)
Read some of these guides.

1) Look for AutoRec for the vs980, install the app on your phone, run it, you'll get a recovery installed.
2) TWRP 2.8+, there's a modified version in the Dev section (gotta search the threads for it) for our phone that handles the processor better.
3) There's other threads on this topic, personally, I just run stock rooted with Xposed, I like having XCam.
Thanks!

[Q] Confusion over recoveries and AOSP

As content as I am with my tweaked stock rom on my Note 3 (AT&T variant...) curiosity has me looking at custom ROMs. However, when I look for information on the AT&T Note 3, most sites say locked bootloader. Which would tell me that I can't install ClockworkMod/TWRP recovery to install an AOSP ROM (probably CyanogenMod since most others seem based off that anyways). Correct me if I'm wrong, but that would mean I'm (we're?) stuck with factory-based ROMs.
However...the instructions here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_hlte mention nothing about the AT&T variant not working.
And I found this: http://www.teamandroid.com/2014/09/...-att-galaxy-note-3-n900a-kitkat-custom-rom/2/ where they have the ClockworkMod installed. However, in this case, search engines have been unhelpful in finding more information about the "Internazionale" ROM. The only thing I've seen is that it's based on official N9005XXUENC2.
Will the hlte instructions work on an AT&T Note 3? I don't have a warranty on the phone anyways, so voiding it really isn't an issue; I'm simply not interested in bricking the thing.

Will the hlte instructions work on an AT&T Note 3? I don't have a warranty on the phone anyways, so voiding it really isn't an issue; I'm simply not interested in bricking the thing.

Take the time to click on just about any thread and you'll find the answer to your question. The bootloader is locked on only the AT&T and Verizon variants so only stock kernels will work. Only ROMs based on the stock ROM will work.
I have been reading threads here for the last week. I know how people who ask seemingly dumb questions get attacked here. I almost didn't even post the questions to begin with cause I knew the repricussions of asking questions.
So...only factory firmware with the locked boot loader. Next question...can we run a non-odin recovery? In the one page I posted it looked like they were running CWM recovery, but everything I've read here says to use the safeboot strap.
Safestrap 3.75 is the ONLY option available to us on the AT&T variant. It does use a modded version of TWRP, but as previously stated, only roms that use the stock TW kernel will work. So far the best rom I've tried is DynamicKat.
