My questions:
1. What is a safestrap?
2. What is a bootstrap?
3. What are the differences between the two?
4. What is the general instruction regarding ROM flashing?
5. Do different ROMs have different flashing methods?
6. Are MIUI and CM7 ROMs available?
Also, please recommend a few ROMs.
Thanks!

1) You can boot into safestrap and like clockworkmod you can wipe or install ZIP etc. Difference is with safestrap you can enable "safesystem" which will backup your current ROM (by saving /data I think?). This way you can always return to your stock ROM by turning off safesystem.
2) Bootstrap is like safestrap but without the safesystem.
3) ^
4) 1) root, 2) install either bootstrap or safestrap, 3) wipe data, 4) install ZIP
5) Some require safestrap but it'll probably be noted if it does. Otherwise it's pretty much the same
6) CM7 is, but because android 4.0 came along, it was never 100% finished. It works fine though. I think someone started MIUI port but never heard from it again
I'm currently using MAVROM and i think it's one of the best GB roms, so thats what I'd recommend:

CM7 can be found here, and there's a link on that page to Safestrap downloads as well. Just make sure to grab the one for the Droid 3.
Do check up on whats not working with CM7.. You might wanna use maverick rom instead

Hi I have just bought Motorola Milestone which seems like Vodafone unlocked version. I am new at Android will ask few general questions.
1. How to identify if the phone is rooted or not?
2. Can I flash my phone (Build SHOLS_U2_02.36.0) to Android 2.2 I am currently running 2.1 Update1
3. What should I do before flashing rom?
4. What are Must-Have software applications to "play" (Flash, Overclock, Reconfigure) with on the phone
THANKs
Hi and enjoy your new Milestone..!
1) Check if you have an app "Superuser" installed, with a pirate's icon. If yes, you are Rooted. Or install an app that needs Root and see if it works well.
2) There's no official FroYo ROM yet, we are waiting for it any day now. But you can flash other FroYo ROMs from Milestone Android Development Forum.
3) You should Read carefully..
4) OpenRecovery, RSD Lite, Motorola USB Drivers
Enjoy modding..!

3. Read up in the forums for the details. In general, you need to
A. Flash vulnerable recovery using RSD (requires MOT usb drivers)
B. Install a new recovery (androidiani is most likely best one for milestone)
C. Install the custom ROM of your choice (most newer roms are froyo based, give you root and already overclocked. My fav is CM6.
4.
In to what I listed above, a few must have (or at least nice to have) apps:
A. Setcpu (overclocking gui and profiles)
B. rootexplorer (file manager with options for root users)
C. Google apps (aka GAPPS). Many roms do need come with the google experience stuff like market and gmail). You need to downlaod seperately.

Don't want to open another thread, but someone might be able to help me.
Yesterday i got my phone back from repairs (headphone socket) and decided to try the new Sense Rom. Liked it, but performance wasn't to my tastes. i installed the backup from my normal 2.2 ROM.
My question is, for example if i install the iceandfire rom (which i see is being updated all the time), will i have to do a complete reinstall of the ROM every time?

I am a bit confused...dod you have a milestone. If so, did you mean your 'normal' 2.1 ROM?
The MS does not have 2.2 yet...
In any case, you usually do not need to do a full wipe for incremental versions. I have never tried iceandfire, but CM6 and others work like this. Only major revisions require wipes. Clearing the dalvik cache and cache partition (easy to do from openrecovery) is usually all that is required. This does not impact any of your data...

sorry, i meant the GOT version.
It seems to be the most vanillaish version out at the moment.

Ah...well if by vanillaish, you mean stock...there are currently at least 2 leaked versions more recent than GOT. GOT is actually rather old and buggy.
But your point is taken, it is a Motorolaish release. I prefer AOSP (android open source project) based ROMs. Motorola proprietary files are still used (drivers and kernel), but the rest is all open source/ customized.
IMHO, this provides features and stuff people actually want.

Hi again. I was reading some other posts but I am still confused.
I have no understanding why all these stuff is used for updating ROM on the device.
What is Open Recovery? why is it used and what does Root-ing do?
I also noticed several times in posts saying Nandroid, Downgrading Recovery Partition, sbf recovery....
Can anyone describe what exactly all these things mean and why are they used for?
Thanks.

Please could you give me a detailed explanation. Should I go in quick office, create a new folder, name it nandroid and that's all? Now when I go in recovery menu there if I chose create backup and will it get saved in the folder I've created?
Please help I'm new to rooting and flashing.

I have been running CM7 on my HP Touchpad for quite some time. I would like to try other ROMS (CM9, AOKP ICS, MIUI) and I have read completing methods for doing this (return to stock, format, clear cache, flash, etc). Since I am relatively new at this, I wanted to ask a few questions so I know what I am getting into and whether or not I can get out of it should I need to.
1. For AOKP, it specifies "Make sure you have the latest CWM". How do you know what the latest is? I have version 5.0.25.2 (I think -- installed with CM7). Is that late enough?
2. Do I put the .zip files in the cminstall folder on the "sdcard" and flash with CWM (after clearing the caches)?
3. Is it necessary to use ACMEInstaller2 or is that an alternate approach to flashing with CWM?
4. If I install CM9, AOKP, or MIUI over CM7, which ACME Uninstaller do I use if I want to take Android off my TP (the one that came out with CM7 or a later version)?
5. Can I go directly to AOKP or MIUI from CM7 or should I install CM9 first?
6. Should I totally remove CM7 before trying any of these other ROMS?
Thank you for any help you can give me. I know there are discussions on much of this all over these boards but for someone new like myself, there is actually too much info and it gets confusing.
The reason I want to make sure I can get Android off again is because I did have an issue that required return of the TP to HP. I was able to use ACME Uninstaller in that case to remove CM7 and it worked great.
Thanks again.

You can put them anywhere, just remember where you put the zip file so you can navigate to it in Clockworkmod. Also, remember to clear cache, data, and dalvik cache before flashing a new rom, not just cache.
3. Is it necessary to use ACMEInstaller2 or is that an alternate approach to flashing with CWM?

No, that's only for installing an android rom from the start, if you only have webos. Once you have clockworkmod, you flash new roms from there.

I don't think it matters what rom you are on if you want to uninstall android completely. But I would use the latest, which I think is acme uninstaller 2

You can flash any rom you want, as long as you wipe everything first. I would highly recommend trying out cm9, it works almost 100% perfectly on my TP.

As I said above, just wipe cache, data, and dalvik cache before flashing a new rom.

1. For AOKP, it specifies "Make sure you have the latest CWM". How do you know what the latest is? I have version 5.0.25.2 (I think -- installed with CM7). Is that late enough? - If you're installing via ACMEInstaller2, you dont need to worry about this. Otherwise, 5.0.2.6 is the latest version.
2. Do I put the .zip files in the cminstall folder on the "sdcard" and flash with CWM (after clearing the caches)? - The zips only need to be in cminstall if you're installing by ACMEInstaller2. Otherwise they can be anywhere on the SD card.
3. Is it necessary to use ACMEInstaller2 or is that an alternate approach to flashing with CWM? - Its an alternate approach to CWM. ACMEInstaller2 should be used in place of the original ACMEInstaller because the original does not work properly with CM9. If you're not doing a 100% clean install (that is, if you've never ran any version of ACMEInstaller before OR if you've ran ACMEUninstaller) you dont need it.
4. If I install CM9, AOKP, or MIUI over CM7, which ACME Uninstaller do I use if I want to take Android off my TP (the one that came out with CM7 or a later version)? - There is only one version, the original ACMEUninstaller works fine.
5. Can I go directly to AOKP or MIUI from CM7 or should I install CM9 first? I doubt it, but you could always try. Keep in mind that the only way to do an upgrade install is by ACMEInstaller2, if you're using CWM you must wipe data first. Also know that many people who have done an upgrade install over CM7 have had issues.
6. Should I totally remove CM7 before trying any of these other ROMS? - Not needed, but you should wipe data as with any other rom.
Thank you for any help you can give me. I know there are discussions on much of this all over these boards but for someone new like myself, there is actually too much info and it gets confusing.

Hello,
I recently flashed my Galaxy Note with a stock rom and i got it root and also got the CWK installed. Now I want to try to install the Android 4.0.
I read the instructions and it says:
1. Make sure you're on the latest CWM
2. MAKE A NANDROID
3. wipe data/factory reset in recovery
4. flash ROM
5. flash Gapps
6. reboot

You should do some searching and some reading before u try 4.0 if u are not familiar with how to do a back up u should probably leave ics alone for now it has been harder for people to get back from ics to gb then it is to get Ics on your phone in th first place and to do a back up u boot in to cwm go back and restore and choose back up not much to it and gapps are google apps which would be provided in download links in the main page of the rom or already in rom

Nandroid = backup: boot into CWMR and hit Backup and restore/Backup
gapps = Google apps

hi there
just that you know so far ICS roms for galaxy note come all from a leacked ICS version who is quite unstable....so you need hard work (if you are not confident with odin) to install ICS, hard work to use it and hard work to return to Gingerbread.....when you will be fed up...
i did it and now after 2 weeks of testing on ics i returned back happily to Gingerbread....but many of the folks around even bricked their note on ICs so i recommend a lot of care prior to do any ics stuff.....
if you accept an advice....wait for ICS rom ....when a proper ics with souces will be released for our note dev will work on it and it will be ok
for now install Leomar checkrom v6 who still is gingerbread and add from kitchen their huge ICS domination theme.........you will be happy and with no big worries.....

1. Pretty Explanatory!
2. NANDROID Backup: It backs up your CURRENT system as it is. All the settings, applications, everything is backed up! If you ever experience any problems, you can restore to this backup through CWM Recovery menu or the CWM app. I really recommend you to make a backup of your stock ROM. Always create backups!
It is pretty easy to do so too. If you have the CWM app, just open it and create a backup through the backup option. Alternatively, open CWM Recovery, scroll to backup and restore, hit backup and your backup will be created!
3. Before jumping from one ROM to another, ALWAYS perform "wipe data/factory reset". It clears everything on your phone so you won't have any problem in installing the new ROM. Also, go to advanced and perform "Wipe Dalvik Cache".
4. Search for any ROM for your note. TeamRocket ROM, RoMow ROM are some good ICS ROMs. Download them, put the .zip file to the root of your sd card and select "install zip from sd card" option in CWM Recovery AFTER you do number 3.
5. Flash GAPPS. This is just a .zip file to download all the google apps to your phone (market, etc.). Google for it! But, apart from CMX ROMs, I never needed to do this. TeamRocket, RoMow, CheckROM etc include GAPPS by default.
6. Reboot your phone through the recovery menu.
7. Enjoy! XD
Hello Guys!
I just bought a droid 3 unlocked, are in Italy.
I have noticed that I have a software version .906 (The last I think), following some guides I installed Rom manager and flashed the recovery from them.
Now I wanted to ask, I can put that rom without incurring risks and fully functional?
And what is the procedure?
Thank you so much guys!
You'll want to install Safestrap 3 from Hashcode which is the latest recovery for the Droid 3 and allows you to install ROMs that use a custom kernel with kexec. Look in the development section for the thread.

moto phones are pretty safe to root and rom, just be prepared to flash a .sbf to recover
but safestrap, makes flashing roms and restoring stock, too easy
cm10 has several things that just don't work, cm9 is better
steel droid ics 5.4 is good or steel droid GB 4.5
with safestrap 3 you flash 4 roms plus stock, and go back and forth just with a reboot
you need to remove rom managers cwm first
edit:
several how to videos here
How to Video's Root, safe strap, kexec, and much more

I'll try my best to help you out here but..
1.) The stock based builds of cm9 had a working camera for pictures only, but those builds are gone and no longer compatible with safestrap 3, otherwise development is focused on kexec.
2.) You should be able to uninstall it from rom manager itself I believe
3.) Sometimes, only for something really major like new codec or something, sometimes but its not always necessary and your stock system will be fully protected.
4.) I don't know what that is, lol i'm new here.
5. There is CM7 but it was never worked on nor finished so don't bother with it really.
6.) I really don't know but I highly doubt it.
Otherwise i'm glad to help you out.

no issues that -I- know of.... all radios work
you SHOULD have the stock safe using safestrap
-cm flashes on slot 1 only or it will not boot
the first time you flash yes you will lose stuff BUT use TB to back up your stuff first
root and install safestrap 3.11 first and then we will talk.
download it from here

I think he was talking about leaving his stock ROM intact and flashing another stock ROM in another slot... (I do that to perserve pure stock)
my setup is as follows
Slot-0 = Pure Stock with the ability to uninstall Root
Slot-1 = cm10.1/PAC/Carbon (A.D.D and cannot decide lol)
Slot-2 = empty
Slot-3 = Liquid
Slot-4 = Stock with permanent root
The reason I have it set up this way is if I need to bring it in or deal with anybody I can instantly switch to any ROM I choose.
select Slot-0 and uninstall/hide root and uninstall SafeStrap BAM! the phone has never been touched. Reinstall SS3.11 and
switch back over to Slot-4. I need something tested.... choose Slot-1
so as you see it is like using Boot Manager...
