[Q] ICS: Update or not to update? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok.. I've seen posts cautioning anyone against trying to install ICS on N7000.. supposedly there is some issue with Samsung's ICS which could brick the device. I've seen warnings saying that even if someone has flashed the OFFICIAL German or Taiwanese ICS, they should flash back to GB immediately.
So.. what gives? Should we wait for a third ICS before upgrading..? Are these warnings genuine?

Yes its safer to wait for either a solution from the devs or samsung.

I see you are using Liquid Smooth ICS V1.. was that safe to flash? This whole ICS stuff is becoming very confusing. I actually switched from my I9100G to N7000 JUST for ICS, and seems like will have to wait even more! lol

Yes, very confusing.
And where is samsung by now?? They got our money with the device and again with the reparations!
Last samsung device for me.

Ys im using LiquidSmooth ICS Rom, But i had installed this rom before the BRICK BUG came into picture. I am stuck on this rom for now but i have no complaints as its running beautifully without any problems... i'm waiting for a fix and not using the CWM at all.
LP1/5/6 repack
LPY
LPF
all of the above have the bug.
Try using CM9 as it uses a different kernel. And go through thread before installing.
ICS running beautifully on SGnote but this brick bug is just ruining the party.

Ok CM9.. I see that there are many things which don't run well on CM9.. speaker phone etc.. any comments?

Waited too long for a official ics jow waiting again for fixed ics. .
I cant believe samsung made a mess but still i dont see a better android platform then samsung for a year or 2 atleast. .

hello, i've updated my SGN using the german rom, and till the moment i've not encountered any bug, only that the phone is bit slower...
is it recomended that i return to stock gingerbread??

Better stay in GB & wait for stable official/stock ICS. I flash LPY German & CF Root...my Gnote have issue with bluetooth (keep disconnect/fail when sending file) & date/time keep changing itself after reboot...weird!

if ICS works well it is better not to try , don`t flash anything don`t use cwm and everything should by fine, wait for next release of ICS or fix.
but really it is your decision (the risk used ics but also the risk of a brick note when you try back to GB)
J_Kirk better to wait for a stable ICS.

Thanks netoperek.. I've reached the same conclusion myself.

@ the moment is working fine with no bugs @ all..
wi-fi works fine, with no DC, Bluet.. also, text messeging, calls, games, facial unlock, etc
the only thing i think is a bit slower is the phone it self. for example is not as smother as before when playing for example the fruit ninja.
when i get home will do downgrade again and w8 for next release

I love my Note it is the best android device around (trust me), I am sorry yours started to lag but then again if you start to install lots of programs and random apps it will do this (just a guess you might have unlucky).
I have tried most of the ROMs manly for testing for my linuxonandroid project, and tbh found stock to be the best for me I just love the Spen features (Although stunner in tablet UI is just well stunning).
Correctly I am on the German ICS with root via mobile odin pros everoot and I love it but it will be nice once the bricking issues are sorted for sure.
I recommend a clean install and not using titanium or any other app to restore apps, just re download those you need and I have never had any lag
I have my Note from 1 week now, and i flash a couple of romĀ“s like Criskelo Rom, Kingdroid Right now im running Stock ICS Rooted and no lag at all maybe you do something wrong
Yeah, I love my Note as well and it is fast. I am on the official ICS German (LPY) build and rooted and love it, no problems found so far for me. I used to be on Stunner version .19 and it was one of the best custom ROMs I have ever run.

Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
lost the touchwiz lag by going CM9.
If you still have problems flash stock kk9 which is a very good stock base (well has been for me ) via PC Odin root it nd then do factory reset ect then unless you have some crap hidden from ics leak you should be running a nice clean rom
Also try wiping (format) everything in mounts and storage then flash stock via Odin and root that is the way I do it when want a really fresh install lol

I love my Note. I have had it for 3 months now and have tried nearly ever rom out there. Just due to interest. I find the Stock Roms the best also. GB Roms are very fast. But I love ICS too much. I got used to ICS on my Galaxy S2 before I upgraded. So once I got my Note I quickly jumped to ICS as soon as it was available. I was not a fan of the Chinese Leak. So I went back to GB for a while. But I have been running LPY for the past week and loved having ICS back. I have just updated to LPF Stock and so far very impressed. Its very quick n smooth :-D
I love my Note!

I Had the lag problem initally at first too, I'm a iphone jb user so lag is really new to me. A easy fix is to use something like apex or go launcher and then limit the number of pages to like 3, super smooth now.

Got my Galaxy Note...but...

Hey Guys I got my galaxy note today! it's awesome!!!....but...I immediately tried to check for updates... but after agreeing with the terms and conditions, it says "Registration is failed. Try Again?".
How can I get around this and update my device OTA?
Here's my phone info:
Model: Galaxy Note GT-N7000
Android: 2.3.6
Baseband: N7000XXKK5
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXKKA
have you tried installing Kies on your PC, then connecting the Phone via cable so that Kies can update it?
4.0 isn't available through OTA atm so you'd need to do the Kies thing

I'm doing that right now! Thanks! ... I guess my Galaxy Nexus habits are hard to break! LOL!
Sorry to hijack the thread but I also got my G.Note, but yesterday . Got it from Amazon Germany, and as soon as I took it out and connected it to the Wifi Internet it said that it had found the OTA update for the ICS.
I cancelled the update as I was not sure if it was worth it. I hear so many people saying that Gingerbread runs smoothly but that ICS is a pain. I also hear about all the camera bugs, etc that ICS has.
The question I have is: Should I keep with Gingerbread for a while longer or should I just update to ICS?
Thank you all for your advice.

I have tried Criskelo ICS, CM9, Stunner, Liquid Smooth and various GB roms. Even though I like some features of the ICS rom, I eventually settle for Chrack GB rom. It run smooth with good battery life and I have no problem runing all the applications I needs. I suggest that you use your GB rom for awhile before trying to update.

there were several updates to note (at least on mine, Base/Eplus Contract btw)
before ICS, and since ICS is not yet available OTA i think you can hit update on your phone until there are none left, then you should have the most recent Gingerbread version.
for ICS, see last post: Kies update^^
Sadly i already did the Samsung Kies update to ICS and now i have some battery problems (google cloud service and several other Wakelocks draining like a *****)
apart from that little problem ICS is working fine
Hi all and thank you for your input.
As for the last post from Aiphares, I can confirm that there is an OTA update for ICS for my phone.
If I hit update it says that an important 4.0 ROM is available and that it will be 316mb (if I remember it correctly). If I wanted to update now or later.
So I did hit later to see what your replies would be, as I did not want to be one of those asking for help how to revert to gingerbread because my phone could have horrible battery drain, or any other known ICS bug.
I would really like to have a working ICS on my phone, and hopefully something that would improve the S Pen, so that I could actually use it for my daily annotations (minutes of meetings, etc.).
Why can't Android battery just improve, I remember that from Froyo to Gingerbread the battery got much better. Well we can't have it all with these dual cores running in our pockets.
As for the custom ROMs I first want to try the official ones, and if I am am not happy with them, I'll read and read so to prevent triangles and than I'll try a Custom stable ROM.

Please do you people even read this forum?? If i was you and read all the threads about bugs (eMMC) etc. etc. i wanted to wait a bit more. Ok, you just might get lucky (or not) and wipe the phone ten times but if you're not prepare to go to the store and claim your warranty !!!
Please read the topics about bugs on ICS.

Random reboots

Hi guys
A friend of mine has a problem: his Galaxy keeps restarting randomly for no reason, many times in a day while using it.
What is weird: the phone hasn't ever been rooted/flashed with a custom rom, neither updated, always been 100% original. Just a normal usage!
I'm not much into this phone, so i don't know if it's a known issue or what.. but it sounds strange to me, possible hardware problem? Needs to be flashed or rooted? Other?
I've already done a factory reset and now i took off the sd-card to see if it could be it, but i'd appreciate some advices!
Thanks
Try updating it with kies, might help but can't guarantee
if random reboots happens while using too much mobile resources then its normal for galaxy mini like phone
Random Reboots might be device specific or not , It depends.
But you may want to visit the samsung care center in your vicinity area just to be sure about the latter .
Else just flash a new stock Rom via ODIN (not that it would leave your device impure as rooting does ).

Is Froyo the last "official" release or was a Gingerbread leaked/official firmware released? I'll probably try flashing something, don't know yet if a custom rom could solve the problem but still it's a possibility

With mobile resources you mean 3G/wifi or RAM? By the way in both the cases i don't think it's the problem, since there aren't many apps in background and the only one using internet connection is whatsapp!

The last official android update for for sgm was gingerbread based api.
Try flashing the stock gingerbread on the device via odin (google it if you don't know how to.) and then try custom roms.
Also the thing about resources, you already know about our sgm aka lil'g . Its not that powerful as most quad core latest devices boosted by plenty much RAM. So multitask on it wisely.

I'll try with gingerbread when i see my friend, thanks! I own a i9000 and flashed pretty much so i know odin and similar stuff, no problem
And yes i tried the mini many times, doesn't have a bunch of ram but still i think it can't be a ram-lack problem since it did the same also after the factory reset, with few apps installed!
Thanks again for the help :good:
Oh, was forgetting: how does the cyano run on the mini? Smooth? Battery killer or ok for everyday use?
Try cm7 by mebitek. Despite its source code is old and official cm7 is way more ahead of it, the mebitek's cm7 relays on battery & performance like a pro..
by resources I mean more ram and CPU usage
background apps ( they don't play big role as they get closed automatically)
running big games (HD one)
etc.
if you have many apps, cut the .android_secure folder and paste it on your computer.. i had this problem with the stock GB 2.3.6.. reboots reboots and reboots!! i pasted the folder in my comp, delete unnecessarily used apps and VOILA! it was running smooth again.. but now i'm using cm7..
I updated to official gingerbread release, then after putting all the (few) apps into phone storage i removed every android-secure file!
I'll see how it goes with this, if the problem remains i'll try a cyano or go directly to the service center
Thanks again for the tips!

[Q] New 8.9 owner amd noob needs help rooting

So i got the 8.9 last week and am pretty happy so far. My main uses are internet surfing and hd videos from youtube and play store. However one of my only complaints is that this thing isnt the fastest. I upgraded to official ics when i first got the tab and its not bad but still id like to install Asop jellybean and overclock the tab to 1.2 or 1.4. However id hate to brick my tab which i see on here all the time. The only problem is i have no idea how to root, even after reading and searching for the past week. My question is could some one tell me or show me a link to show EXACTLY how to root to the newest asop jb from official ics without bricking and then tell me how to oc it? I am such a noob with this, I dont know what kernels or anything is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure how missed this thread in the list. It's stickied at the very top.

Good thing i didn't go a head and try to root. I have official ics installed and apparently you have to flash so,e cmw rom or something but i have no idea how to do that, i have searched the forums and all the instructions are just kind of bland and not real specific. Sad as it is, i am someone who needs exact instructions and explanations of how to specifically complete each instruction. Sorry that i am being a pain. I just bought thus tab on a amazon credit card and have not even, ade the first payment that is why I am so worried about bricking or messing up the tab. Thanks for any help

Hmm. I'd be careful recommending ROMs just yet. He hasn't mentioned which model of 8.9 Tab he has.
Given that he mentions he's already on ICS I'd assume he's probably got a wifi-only P7310. He doesn't mention any other radio types (3G, LTE, etc.).
@Wrebbs, what model 8.9 tab do you have?

I've tried various roms and liked cm10 very much. Had to flash stock 3.2 via odin to get rid of the garbled screen issue and decided to try update OTA to ics that worked and i'm running stock ics on my dutch 7310 now this works fairly well, so i am going to wait untill the battery drain issue is being fixed on cm10 and try again then

Not happy with the stock ICS version of the Tab? Did it upgrade over kies? Are you in the US? I am in Europe and have the 3G version. Have to use a ported rom from 7500 to get ICS.
The ICS I have runs really smooth! Price was good aswell. Strange that your TAB is slow...
Only problem I have is that Adobe Flash gives me some trouble in HD and on some sites.
I tried HC 3.2 Stock, CM10 JB 4.1, SafariKing ICS and ported ICS from 7500 v2 and honestly - If I had stock original ICS I think I would stay with it! The Jellybean ROMs still have issues. in Alpha Beta stages.
The Tracid rom mentioned might be the next rom I try, but still happy with the ICS rom I have. If it aint broke don't fix it... (Itchy though, flashing roms is fun.)
Take it from someone whos hard bricked before, take your time and do your homework. Make sure you know the rom is for your specific device. You're not going to see drastic speed increases even if oc'd. So take your time and re-read everything. Your going to have to flash a recovery first, cwm or twrp through odin. Again, make sure it's for your device. Then you can root or flash a rooted rom. Once again, make sure it's for your device.

[Q] Gingerbread Stock Rom or Cyanogenmod 9

Hello guys
I need you help to decide either to stay to my stock gingerbread rom or root my phone and install cyanogenmod 9 on my Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000
Please tell me which one is more stable and better to use..
Thanks in advance
Should just go with Cyanogenmod 10 Nightly. I use my phone every day and get no random reboots, stability issues or incompatible features/apps. Everything seems to work great. I can't see much of a reason to use CM9 since CM10 works so well
I moved to CM10 from XXJW4 2.6.4 and have no plans on rolling back.

Go with CM10! very recommended!
if you want, here there is a tutorial that shows you how to ROOT
your Galaxy s1 stock ROM 2.3.4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k274AsTleAc&feature=plcp
I've been using CM9RC2 for a few months now and it's good. I find it a lot more stable and a lot faster than stock. However, I find I miss a lot of the small things about the stock ROM that just aren't in CM. The Contacts app is poor (can't link contacts, no Facebook integration) as is the stock Calender and the default music player that comes with it is atrocious.
If you can live with those, or are willing to pay for some appropriate replacement apps then I can definitely recommend going with CM
I'm always on gb, lately JW7 gb rom, ext4 format, Semaphore 2. 7.4. Reliable and fast.
Since a week I turned on a CM10. I like a lot, it's stable but very battery drainy and no faster than my previus gb JW7.
I think GB is still the best for our poor i9000...
Inviato dal mio GT-I9000 con Tapatalk 2
I switched from Samsung GB to CM9 when it became stable mi-August (now I'm on CM9.1).
I don't plan to switch to CM10 until it is stable (or at least in RC stage) => and I hope it will become stable before 4.2 goes open source and pawitp starts working on next CM!
For me, my phone is much better with CM9: less reboots (I only had one in two months instead of one per week with GB).
My phone is generally more enjoyable: it is difficult to point specific functionnalities (there are many), but the user experience has been a big focus for Google in ICS, and the result is really great for me. I like stock applications a lot (even though contact app may indeed have less functionnalities than Touchwiz one). One the other side, I could not say if the phone is faster or not: so it your main concern is speed, the switch won't change much (unless you go with CM10 which is supposed to be faster). Main drawback for me is that MMS don't work anymore, but I guess it's a problem very specific to my case as I didn't find other people having my problem (and as I didn't use MMS a lot, I didn't take time to investigate heavily the issue).

Can any one help me out ... I m very much tensed Please please help me....:crying:
Just pull out the battery and then insert it after couple of minutes. Then power on while pressing 3 button combo and go to the download mode. Start Odin 1.7 in your PC and try to flash any stock gb rom.

You need to use Odin to get gingerbread bootloader before you can flash custom gb roms

I've installed CM10 after I was on CM9 for almost 2 months and I can say my phone works much better compared to GB and CM9. Everything's much faster and much smoother.
Gingerbread with root is very nice !! But me i use Macklay Rom ( jb)
