Hopefully an unlocked bootloader, kept promises, and faster releases. Either way, I dont see it being any worse than what we had before.
Expect the worst, hope for the best.

While I understand they want to run Motorola independently, I do hope they have Moto follow the principles they themselves believe in. Only time will tell.
True.
Expecting the worst:
1. Webtop Gone
2. Making slimmer and slimmer phones that may or may not survive a day of usage.
3. Keep on delivering slower than competition technology (pen tile resolution, slower processor)
4. Keep on failing to fulfill customer's needs.
Hoping:
1. As google does not make PC's/ laptops, and strong resources. Hoping they develop Webtop software and push it further.
2. Continue to make phones thick enough to hold firmly and slim enough to not create bulge under ur pocket (ex. razr maxx). 3300mah would be a good guideline.
3. Keeping up with the competition with newest hardwares (processor, GP). Coz to be honest, no phone craves processing speed like Motorola does (with it's webtop requirements.
4. Better customer support.
I will not change to other branded phones, solely because of the webtop software.

pentile doesn't deserve the rap it gets. Yes, it causes some pixelation, but readability outside is important to me. Also, I really don't think Moto phones are underpowered. At the moment they don't really have a 'superphone', but a bunch of newer CPUs just came out...
Personally, I hope Google:
1) Keeps a hardware keyboard model
2) Unlocks the bootloaders
That's it. The latest version of Blur on the D4 does not bother me (after you replace the launcher). The D4 is fast, has a great keyboard, good design. The only thing that is disappointing about it is the locked bootloader. And the non-removable battery. But I won't even get into that...

This +1. These are my only two concerns. Keep the keyboard and unlock the bootloader!
I still fail to understand how there has been a systematic removal of keyboards from almost all phones by manufacturers when there clearly remains a reasonably sized market segment that still wants them!

I haven't noticed the problems people complain about with the pentile display either. I love the readability of it outdoors, even when it's set at minimal brightness.
A larger battery would be nice but wasn't a deal breaker for me, I just bought an extra usb cable and keep it plugged into my computer at work and I have no issues making it through an average work day even under heavy use.

Just want to know who supports the fact Motorola RAZR series sucks. These are the reasons why i hate RAZR...
1. Too thin to hold properly
2. Very Expensive just becuz its slim
3. The value depreciates fast compared to the price first bought
4. Keypad is extremely annoying, hard to press.
and lots more reasons to go....
x2 to all that
I hate Motorola phones, there all to damn buggy!!!
rename this thread MOTOROLA the whole company sucks.
their phones are always three steps behind in technology and their phone os's suck. the only feature i like is that they can lock each individual item with a pin. other than that, motorola's are trash phones.
I x2 the fact the whole company sucks! This AR based corp make a killing off trendy crap, pay there workers next to nothing. I just had to have a bluetooth replaced, I get somone in India not that there's anything wrong with India, however they're given a script & cannot deviate from thar! Hell it only took 4 calls & as many weeks to get it replaced. So yes I'd say they suck the high hard one BIG TIME
Took your advice hiimcliff!
Motorola used to be one of the best phone manufacturer, especially their startac series and brick phones.
It also seems that Motorola tend to love making low end budget phones for cheap prices, however their budget series are not popular because of its sh!tty looks.
I also heard that motorola likes to exploit their labour workforce from my friend However dunno if its true

I still love my D3 despite the "sticking" keys, finicky battery life, and failed Alt key presses that cause me to type things like "dualvcore processor." From what I've read, a leaked update fixed all of these issue and that leak may be released shortly.

i also was a little concered with the low RAM..is that an issue for anyone?
I like it a lot better now than when I first got it. The screen will always suck, but I'll live.
why does it suck? the pentile display you mean?
Silly question.

Yes, enjoying my D3 tremendously. I still have my old Droid and that phone now frustrates me with how slow (even overclocked) it is in overall use.
As for the screen, love the screen. I can actually use my phone outside in full sunlight/daylight conditions.
I came from my old Droid as well. I agree even overclocked, it just didn't have the hardware to run 2.3 very well. I love my new Droid 3, its got everything I liked about the original only better. The few quirks in the phone now I don't worry about, they'll all hopefully be fixed via updates. The only thing that has me concerned at this point is the whether we'll be able to get what we need to unlock this thing to get custom rom's going. After running Cyanogen and cyanogen based roms for years, going to any stock phone just seems bland. I've made my decision to stick with the D3 and see were it goes (if they unlock it like they alluded that they would), but for me it'll be a deciding factor as to whether I buy a Moto phone in the future or not.
Lemme break it down, moto cliq robbed me of the android Xperience, ran like crap, was promised and update that never appeared, and overheated like a mother! So I upgrade to Mytouch slide for a couple days, felt cheap, screen sucked, and wasn't much of an upgrade to my cliq as the cliq felt more solid and ran just as good when deblurred and Overclocked. So finally I upgraded to SGS Vibrant. I loved it! It was practically unbrickable! Unfortunately Samsung was slow to give updates or support. To have upgrades or updates of merit came with a heavy cost of potentially killing the phone. RFS filesystem sucked and made it run way slow compared to EXT3/4 filesystem phones and required a filesystem conversion (dangerous) ! And of course swype is nice, but in my hands a hardware keyboard is better.
Now for the D3, THE ONLY DUAL-CORE TI-ARM proc, with KEYBOARD, Front Facing Camera, 8MP 1080p Rear Camera with LED flash, mini-HDMI port, SGX540 video card (same as SGS Vibrant, but evidently better scores), great battery life (after update), with guarantees of updates and upgrades on the best service provider in the US! And Moto has given promise to unlock bootloaders.
Needless to say, I love my D3. Its the best phone I have EVAR had and it has crazy potential. Can't wait to OC this thing, deblur it and turn it into the android power hungry demon that it was meant to be!

I cannot wait for the day that we can run vanilla android! I'm already tired of moto blurs Grey-blue, blueish-grey, grey, cyan colored theme.
The Droid 3 exceeds on almost every one of my criteria. I love everything about it except for two things. The awful screen and the Motorola crud. Thankfully there's something that can be done about the later. The former is just a sad decision on Motorola's part. It would have been absolutely wonderful if they just increased the size because even though it has a higher resolution, the droid 2 and 1 still beat it out in terms of clarity. Pathetic. Everything else is upgraded but the screen is downgraded. That's all I have to say.
I love my D3, and I work hard every day to make it even better.
I came from the OG Droid, which I loved dearly until it started to physically fall apart (battery door started getting loose, USB jack was almost unusable, headphone jack started shorting out), at which point I then reimaged my wife's OG Droid (that she retired for an iPhone 4) with my nand backup, thus successfully performing the proverbial "brain transplant". I used that phone for a few months, just long enough to get me to the D3 release.
I was originally waiting on the Bionic, but (a) I got tired of waiting, (b) I didn't want to put up with the notorious LTE battery life issues that were seen on other devices and (c) I wasn't too keen on the $100 premium I was sure would be included in the Bionic price tag (as will all the other newly-launched VZW LTE devices). So, I came to love the D3 and picked one up at lauch via web order.
I LOVE this phone. The keyboard is clearly in a class of its own (better than my old Blackberries, which are generally considered the "gold standard" of mobile keyboards). I'm OK with the Moto BLUR (or whatever they call it now) stuff on there, but I really don't use it. I gave the homescreen a try for a while, but missed the scrolling dock from Laucher Pro+, so I went back to LP+ recently.
The phone has always been fast enough for me (no more disappointment from my overclocked, overly-warm, OG Droid that still can't run heavy stuff smoothly). I was never really concerned about the RAM size, and it hasn't been a problem for me. Now that my D3 is rooted and I've frozen on the bloatware, even more RAM stays available, the phone runs even faster and the battery life improved, marginally.
Ultimately, battery life was the only thing I was a bit disappointed about on this phone. I instaleld the leaked update and now that has been fixed to my satisfaction. So, overall, I am quite happy with this phone. As long as the hardware holds up, I'll likely be keeping this one full-term.
-SR-
PS: I even like the floppy plastic battery cover that some people complain about. I just enjoy messing with it, for some reason. I think I like how it fits so well when I snap it back on, and the texture is good in the hand. Call me crazy (you wouldn't be the first).

My DROID3 seems more awesome everytime I use it. GO PENS!
Yes, I very much love my Droid 3. The keyboard is out standing and I have not had any problems with sticking keys or missed alt presses whatsoever. The screen can look **** some times but as stated before it does view well in sunlight so I guess it's a trade off. The phone is very fast and responsive. Stock launcher looks awesome and has great widgets, but it's laggy. It flies with ADW. All in all, I just want AOSP Gingerbread/Ice Cream Sandwich and I'm good to go.
I'm getting bionic envy with the larger screen and LTE but in the end, I like the keyboard so I know the D3 is the right phone for me.
Before root and OTA? No
After root and OTA? Yes
Why? Purely because of the obvious bugs that went out that weren't properly QC'ed (serious, serious problem with almost all carriers and mfg's these days), poor battery life, and too much of Verizon's forced bloat that should be uninstallable.
Post OTA,battery life is great, performance is snappier and even better when rooted and freezing the bulk of bloat ware.
I started on the OG Droid the day it was released. Then when the Droid 2 came out, I upgraded to that. I now own the Droid 3, and I can honestly say that they pretty much got it right this time. If it was Blur-less, it would be the perfect phone.
I've since rooted to remove all the crap, and put Go Launcher on it. Now it really performs the way it should, and the battery performance has been night and day since I made those changes.
I'm pretty happy with it right now.

Tiny ram is a pain only because the bloatware fills it up. If the phone were running AOSP, it would fly.
There are many devices out there ranging from low to high-end.
Even though there's a huge selection, wouldn't it be nice to make a phone which you want?
I was just day dreamming and thought about custom phone building.
It would be like a PC where parts can be selected by you, such as:
Processor
Camera resolution and optics
Display size
Battery capacity
GSM or CDMA
Android version
Outer design (By using current devices of course, designing it by scratch would take to long and cost to much)
Decals (such as name of the phone on the back)
Etc.
Wouldn't it be cool if you can go on a major manufacturers website, build your phone to your specifications, get a quote, and place your order? I doubt this will ever happen but I'm a dreamer.
Any thoughts?

A few select Chinese companies can and will do this for you.
I think it's cool too. And furthermore believe we will live to see it happen one day.
I think it could happen some day. However, I wished the same thing for notebooks, and that didn't quite happen yet - seems manufacturers like the power to say 'I think you want this' and make products. Not a single laptop out right now meets all my specifications, and the same goes for phones, but I still needed to get one, oh well...
Hrm.. I can see it now... the Alienware NotaNexus 9000
Get your SLI Nvidia Tegra Chipset with 2 Gigs of RAM and a Terrabyte Raided Super Air Cooled Titanium AMOLED 7" screen phone. With External Battery!
All you Droid 4 owners, how is this thing? What does the future hold for the Droid 4?
I like it a lot...and now that the fastboot files have been released I like it even more. Having said that...I think this will likely be my last Motorola device. The locked bootloader has hindered development activity and that is a big part of what makes a device worth owning. I won't continue supporting a manufacturer that is so development/mod unfriendly and lies to us repeatedly about it.
But you can't deny the fact that the hardware is top notch. How is the battery life?
You can deny it. The 4430 1.2 is a very weak dual core, as well as the SGX540. All old hardware. Not *top knotch* more middle end.

Even with a few stumbles, the Droid4 is quickly becoming my favorite phone. The build is sturdy enough to handle the abuse of working construction, but its not limited in its hardware or capability. I have had a few shortcomings with battery life, but this has been expected after going through a few phones.(Droid X, Incredible, DevourLOL)
The devs have put ALOT of work into this phone and its only getting better. Release of fastboot files and ever improving 4.0 builds are really making this thing a keeper.
If you have the patience to go through every direction, step by step and really make sure you're absorbing all instruction the devs are providing, you should have no problem accomplishing the impossible.
simply put, if you need a keyboard this is your phone. Even pure stock this thing flies. Battery life is not as bad as some claim again pure stock I get 10-15hrs on a charge dependant on usage. On gummy ics I have gotten as much as 1day and 16hrs with lite usage (6hrs was when I was asleep).
Development has just begun now that the fast boot files were released so its only going to get better.
As far as the locked boot loader is concerned, it has its drawbacks but when you compare it to the benefits of a sturdy phone and excellent reception I will take the latter. Besides the boot loader has never stopped development and I don't see that changing.

I don't know what people really complain about with this phone. I have it and I love it. There should be no complaints of speed on this phone. As someone else pointed out, even on the stock firmware, the phone is extremely responsive. The biggest complaint seems to be about the screen, but I don't know why. It took me about a week to get completely used to it, and I don't have any complaints. I can tell you it seems to have been a good choice on Motorola's part; I had the phone screen on for about an hour and a half earlier, and the battery was still at 60%. Keep in mind that the Pentile display was chosen because it excels at being visible in direct sunlight. The extra white pixel makes it brighter and increases contrast without requiring a much brighter back light.
The keyboard is great, the cameras are actually both quite good, 4G speeds are excellent, build quality is fantastic, and even the stock firmware is quite decent as far as stock firmware goes. It has a notification LED, HDMI out, and all the other features you would expect of a good Android handset.
The development community has been wonderful, and we have 3 active ICS ports in progress (I am running one of the AOKP nightlies right now). There has been a little work on Gingerbread ROMS but not much because all the work is going to ICS.
Despite the people that are complaining, I think the Droid 4 is a very solid phone that is well built, has great hardware and features, and a very bright software future as well.
I hedged forever before deciding on the D4. The biggest problem I had when I checked one out in the store was the screen. Good resolution (at least for me), but the ghosting was very distracting. I'm very glad I chose the D4 now because it is awesome. I've become used to the ghosting and everything else is awesome. Of course, I really like having a keyboard which was my main reason for getting this phone.
Best keyboard ever made. If you need a keyboard, it's the best phone available.
Screen isn't particularly pretty, but very good in direct sunlight.
Battery life is good but not outstanding (stock).
Browser performance is mediocre like every other Gingerbread phone.
I believe ICS ROMs are currently lacking video camera support. (this could be Droid3 only, but thought it applied to both).
Signal quality is very good, just like the Droid 1, 2, and 3.
Camera quality is decent but not amazing.
I've found Blur can be me made tolerable with nothing more than a third party launcher capable of hiding apps. You don't even need root.
Opera Mobile is a solution to the browsing issue. Sadly it does not work in ICS yet (no hw acceleration) but... then you get the faster ICS browsing anyway...

camera is good but not perfect need some software fixes...the phone is great and smooth but need more software support
if bootloader unlocks devs gonna make the best of this phone
DONT
i regret it.
bootloader and crappy lg support messed it up
One X all the way..
onex is good but have some serious touch problems and high temp overheat...
read my friend...
and this phone is new...give it some time
onex got almost morethan 1 year of rom cooking
i Hate Samsung for there bad quality in production "i have alot of problem with them" second thing both company have slow software support in my region
but at least Samsung have unlocked bootloader and HTC is very Overpriced here.
4X heats on gaming too..
and one year of rom cooking? they can. we cant.
my advice, go for s3.. or wait till someone uses an S4 pro chip and go for that..
but not optimus g.. that'll suck **** too
I'm still cheating on it with my p1i. But if you need an android phone, you can do (a lot) worse than this one. Battery life is good, when comparing it to other android phones I've tried... also compared to other tegra 3 devices.. Standby-time tends to be measured in days, which is as it should be (even if that hasn't been obvious for designers for a while for some reason). And battery life while running low-power apps also is good because of the companion core, and lack of in-built apps that use active focus, or keep requesting busy services too fast, etc. So playing music or streaming in the background, and so on, actually didn't draw much power.
So then you have basically the standby time of the second generation iPhones, while still also having the low power-draw while running modest tasks, or flipping through the menus. Seems to be intelligently set up when it comes to using cores when accelerating video, and running on hdmi out as well. That it's not pushing every core to full burn, and balance the running cores. I expect that this is not specific to this phone, though, and happens transparently on the chipset (and that it's the lack of active in-built apps in the background that makes the difference between this and the onex that I tried). On top of that you have apparently the best 3d performance in the shop, without the thing becoming a glowing hot potato in your hand after two minutes.
Menu system and standby screen with the circle unlock (that opens up directly to the app below, etc) also works well, imo. Would wish they did a bit more with it and let you customise it a bit more, though.
Did I mention it has a stereo-plug connector that's not in conductive rubber? That's lovely. Screen and edges I like better than the iPhone I was forced to use for a short while.
Also, optional and removable sd-slot. Thought that was standard nowadays, but no.
Negatives are.. no led blip when getting new messages. Is a bit strange, but saves me a lot of stress, strangely enough
Has no keyboard. And it's fricking huge (relatively speaking.. it's smaller than both the galaxy 3 and the onex.. :/ which makes it the smallest in this class.. fail.. ). If you open it up, the widest component is the module with the home-buttons. Next is the external modules for antenna, I think. The actual core chip with the bus-interface is less than half the thickness of the device. Battery is tiny inside the chassis as well. They could easily have fitted a slightly flatter but larger lithium-polymer battery inside that casing, and had twice the battery life on this thing.
So maybe one day, we'll get a device like this in a credit card sized ips panel. Grey or Tegra4 maybe? Should be possible in the current design as well, though.
Other than that - no odt text editor in Android yet. But I can spam twitter and facebook with every touch of my fingers. Otherwise, format support is good, and this phone doesn't force you to use specific applications via annoying vendor registry settings. Which is a mercy since the boot-loader is locked.
But lacking that smaller phone... since there unfortunately ARE NO PHONES LIKE THAT ON THE MARKET WHATSOEVER. Smaller phones also tend to be thicker. And the different manufacturers are competing with themselves on who can make the most iPhone-like iPhone copy. And have apparently decided that slide-out keyboards are evil... So with that in mind, this is probably the best you can get at the moment, since it's also the cheapest tegra 3 phone on the market. Frankly agonized a lot over buying it, but I'm not unhappy with it so far.
Also, a thing very very important with me, is that since its plastic and with patterns, I dont have to put it in a case, which will make it even bigger. I just use a screen protector and I am done!
even that i'm fully aware of the locked bootloader, i still bought it, because it has excellent hardware with a good price...
for the camera, im not using stock apps, and it is good
