I love my Captivate but 2 things bother me.
1) Why does the music player start every time I unplug the wired headset? I've tested and it's not running BEFORE I plug the headset in.
2) Why do so many apps automatically start in the background? I will use Process Killer to bring it down to 1 or 2 apps running and next thing I know, there are 7 or 8 and I haven't started any of them! This especially bothers me with the AT&t bloatware apps that cost extra to use.
Any info/fixes would be appreciated!

1) I have never heard of this happening to anyone before
2) there are allot of applications and processes that have dependencies on other applications and processes - they will need to be running for your phone to operate properly.
Don't fall into the idea that you need to manage the memory on your android phone the same way you would a windows machine. unless you have installed a bad acting or poorly coded application your android phone will shut down what ever processes need shut when they need shut down all on its own.
The only reason you should use or need any kind of task manager or task killer is to check every now and then to see if you do have a bad acting memory/cpu hog causing problems. too many people use task killers have them running in auto without knowing what they are doing and a dependent needed processes get killed and they can't figure out why their phone acts so buggy.
Thanks for the reply

Well then, Youtube running for no apparent reason at all would be a dependancy of exactly what?
Maybe the only reason YOU would need a task killer is what you stated above, I am using it to see what's going on on my phone and if I am in danger of ending up with charges I'm not willing to pay for. But thanks for the reply.

Using it to watch what your phone is doing learn what's going on is a good idea - but I would avoid shutting anything down until you do know why or what process started it - if you shut them down without knowing why they are running then you will continue to see them restarted for apparently no reason.
As for youtube, if you had been recently browsing the web one of the pages you visited may of contained a link to a file your phone has associated with youtube. Also you may have installed some app that triggers youtube, but just killing it without knowing why it is running may keep you from finding out what is going on and cause some other unexplained strange bug.
I have seen more than one person have their phone go from being buggy to running well when they stopped killing processes and turned off any auto killing functions of their task killer/manager and just watched their phone run for a couple days while letting the phone handle shutting processes down.
But as far as watching your phone closely and learning what it is doing, I am all for this - at the same time I don't want to be promoting paranoid behavior - but being informed and having a good idea what's going on with your phone wil definitely make you more capable of trouble shooting if and when the need arises.
And just be sure to check you bill every month and see what your being billed.
I found that removing the AT&T bloat to be almost mandatory to have a great running phone.
Couple that with the custom ROM's found here - and the device is awesome. I have no need to kill any processes. I do open up System Monitor to see what is going on with the device - but that is the beauty of Android - you can actually see EVERYTHING that is running on it.. and based on any errant process - you can kill it.
But.. there are a million articles on if Task Killers are a benefit or a hindrance to your phone's battery life and performance.
Bottom Line - be smart with your phone like your computer... don't download a bunch of crap, watch where you browse, and keep an eye on your sys monitor to see how your phone is behaving.

Joe, where is the System Monitor?
I've not come up with the nads yet to root the phone and remove the bloat. I'm not in any hurry, the phone runs great. As I tried to explain before, I'm curious as to why these applications end up running at random, without my even touching the phone. I will clear all apps from running and lay the phone down and not touch it. On my last look, 2 messaging apps were running, Youtube, AT&T Navigator, Where's my Droid and Gallery. Bear in mind, I had not touched the phone. I just cleared it again and will look after bit to see what has started.
I am also looking for any theories as to why my music player starts when I pull the headset out from being on a phone call.
Although appreciated, I am not looking for opinions on what I should and shouldn't be doing with my phone.
Lol. I just to trying a piece of advice - I know it is your phone and you can do with it what you please.
But go ahead and keep killing processes without knowing what your doing and see if you have more or less strange buggy behavior.
FYI - messaging apps are generally coded to almost continually sync in the background - to see if you have any new messages and will restart every time you stop them - if you want to know instantly of any new messages they will have to run
Att navigator - att is trying to shove this app on you so they have it set to start any time your phone starts any locating process - and your phone will almost continually be trying to figure out its location
Wheres my droid - is either trying to figure out where it is or preparing to figure out where is to be ready to let you know when you ask - if this program did not have something triggering it to keep it running all the time it would be a pretty useless piece of software don't you think
Gallery - pretty much any media syncing process wil start gallery - and allot of media processes have some type of background media sync process
As for youtube - I'm not sure yet
Okay it all started when I updated my original Samsung Galaxy S i9000 running Eclair to Froyo I9000XXJP3 using Samsung Kies. Since then its been really slow and very laggy. I ran around Google for a bit and found some clues about doing a factory reset just after updating to Froyo. To do this I would like to download all apps that can be installed onto and SD card to my SD card so I dont have to re-install all the 111 apps I have after factory reset. It would be pretty cool if someone told me how to backup my contacts, ALL of my settings, my email, basically EVERYTHING on my phone that I would have added on myself after I started using it. Of course I am guessing that the default Samsung Apps that came with the phone and are still available on Froyo will still be available after the factory reset.
My next problem. While someone on these forums tell me how to backup ALL of my data (apps, contacts, media, etc........) onto an SD card before factory resetting I decided I will try to root my phone and apply OneClickLagFix V2.2+. So I used an Windows app called SuperOneClick to root my phone, successfully. After this I installed OneClickLagFix, gave it permission. Then I installed the OneClickLagFix V2.2+, also successfully. After this I tested my phone with Quadrant Benchmark and I got a score of 1956 (which is amazing because I had got 915 before I had applied the LagFix). This is all amazing, but I realised that my battery is draining really fast, because usually if I don't use my phone in the night while sleeping for approx.6-8 hours it drains little to nothing of the battery, but after applying the lag fix I left it on at night (with full battery) while sleeping and when I woke up it had only half of its battery left, so I am guessing OneClickLagFix V2.2+ drains my battery while trying to speed up my phone which is really not helpful (which is why I would like to try to factory reset as a means of speeding up my phone without draining battery).
The third thing, still related to the topic of battery power and speeding up Froyo. I realised that even after applying the OneClickLagFix V2.2+ and gaining a Quadrant mark of 1956, my Galaxy S still did not have the iPhone style smoothness I would expect from the powerful 1Ghz processor in the phone, so please dose anyone have any ways of basically speeding up the phone (with iPhone style smoothness) and not draining battery.
My next thing is not a problem, it's just for fun. I heard that the Galaxy S's CPU can be overclocked to 1.2GHz and 1.6GHz. Could someone post a guide that explained in detail what I have to do to overclock my Galaxy S because I am quite new to hacking my phone and things like that.
So my questions so far:
How to speed up my Froyo phone (make it very fast and smooth like the iOS) without draining too much battery?
How to backup EVERYTHING (like all my downloaded apps, contacts, SMS, etc..) before factory resetting?
How to overclock CPU to 1.2GHz and 1.6GHz?
Hi, I'm still running 2.1 Eclair but maybe i can help a bit. I very much doubt that its OneClickLagFix draining your battery, ive been running it for over 6 months without any problems and so have thousands of others but you could try looking through the OneClickLagFix thread just in case
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784691&highlight=oneclicklagfix
Next thing, are you running a task manager or process killer? they can drain the battery while they kill a process and it starts again and gets killed again and starts agai...... you get the idea
I use AutoKiller Memory manager from the market. This works with the built in android process killer and just tweaks it to work better. I find the moderate preset setting to be good but others have suggested going further so you may need to experiment on that.
Also are you sure you didnt install another 'rogue' app? some apps are known to stop the phone from going into sleep mode and that would also cause battery loss at night.
As for backing your things up, AppBrain from the market will take care of your apps if you make an account with them and use your Google log in. It will remember which were installed and put them back when you are ready, I dont think it will save 'in game' data like saves and such though. I cant help with contacts, messages and the rest, sorry.
Lastly, to overclock it you will need to be rooted (as you said you are) and use an app called SetCPU from the market. But be warned, firstly it is guaranteed to cost more battery power overclocking it and the phone will get hotter in use. It will however speed things up a little IF it doesnt blow up LOL. The opposite would be to underclock and save power but then it would run slower and you don't seem to be aiming for that
Good Luck
Thanks!
Thanks for the help, I used App Brain to sync apps and also backed up my apps using Titanium Backup to my SD card, which also backed up the app data. Also, I backed up my contacts by pressing the menu button on the contacts screen and exporting. To backup my messages I used SMSBackup. It all worked well.
I will look into the battery matter, yes, I am using Advanced Task Killer but after reading your response I did not re install it after the factory reset. I will definitely try AutoKiller Memory manager and look into the battery matter further if it doesnt change things.
I tried SetCPU but it only lets me move the sliders upto 1GHz, not higher. Any help is appreciated. And also I just want to try the 1.2GHz, because I am guessing 1.6GHz will REALLY push things past the limit and might mess things up. If things mess up with 1.2GHz I will put it back to 1GHz, and if you had not told me I wouldnt have known about the heating problem, thanks .
How does overclocking work anyway?
Similar issues like whoosh with my phone too.
Pre froyo (no root no lagfix) - app drawer page transition smoothness superb. No lag or stutter in transitions.
Post froyo (pre root and lagfix) - stuttery app drawer page transitions.
Root and voodoo lagfix have not fixed that problem.
- Quadrant ~1500
- formatted internal sd card.
- factory reset post froyo install.
- formatted ext sd card.
- ext sd card sandisk class 4 16gb.
Any solutions to above issues would be greatly appreciated as i would assume would also assist op with their issues.
Cheers

Hey, erm, I thought the Galaxy S has 512MB of RAM but the RAM manager is 300 and something MB of RAM. Maybe thats why it is so slow, because i would expect iPhone-style smoothness from a 1GHz Processor and 512MB of RAM, but looks like it has a cap on. Is there anyway we can fully uncap the RAM usage, so all the 512MB is used? that would be helpful
problems fixed
I used the power of my rooted phone to titanium backup (pro recommended) and then backed up all apps with user data. I factory reset my phone which speeded everything up A BIT. then i discovered Darky's ROM 5.5 (maybe higher by the time some read this post) and installed that following the CLEAN guide written very well (video too) on his forum (CLEAN recommended to upgrade from normal galaxy s firmware to darky's ROM then EASY guide for upgrading from past versions of Darky's ROM).
After following the guide, everything booted up perfectly (amazing gingerbread experience, it feels and looks a lot like it, just missing vibration from gingerbread keyboard and some gingerbread icons, also if darky reads this, maybe you should integrate the new Nexus wallpaper in, but its not that hard to install it yourself either so its fine).
I set the phone up, redownloaded Titanium Backup and it took about half an hour to restore all my apps (with all data). Also note that before I had installed Darky's ROM 5.5 it had taken me 1 and a half hours to restore apps using Titanium Backup so you can see how significantly fast Darky's ROM is. It is amazing!
Well done!
Is there a way to select which apps you want to start up and run when the phone is booted? Since I've rooted I've had a lot more apps running right after turning the phone on (15-25 apps running). It is sluggish at start up, I'm assuming this is because the phone is trying to start and run a whole bunch of apps at the same time as well as obtain signal, check verify media on the SD card etc. and the processor is bogged down. Is there a way to select which apps I'd like to run at start up?
If you want to reduce lag try roms. Any app that tries to control what Is starting up will largely be ineffective
Any speculation as to why I never experienced this until after I rooted my phone?
Rooting should not cause programs to just start running.
Are you certain you have not added something else since root that may be causing lag?
I wouldn't describe it as general lag. It's only at start up. Once everything has loaded it runs the same it did the day I got it. It's just that it takes longer to boot initially. And when I use my task killer once everything is loaded it typically kills off 20-25 apps. Before I rooted I had a max of 6 apps running at start up. Currently I have 80 apps installed. Before I rooted I might have had 10 less apps.
Go to market, put startup in search, you should find several apps that claim to help with this
Thanks, I'll give that a try.
Startup Auditor. Works for me, give it a shot.
Hello guys, it is great to finally find some place like this online!!!
I have a LG Revolution by Veriwon Wireless, and as you can see in my nickname, I really hate LG Revolution because I cannot delete any of stupid bloatwares that have been installed on my phone nor call or go to different menus within two seconds.
The phone is getting slower and slower and I'm almost about to have a mental breakage... I once thought about throwing this #$#$ out and get a free, txt and camera (no video) only LG Glare or something....
Guys do not direct me to weird codes and all that but can any of you here help me through the process of rooting the phone and putting? flashing? the ROM please? T^T
I once tried to do one-touch rooting or whatever but my phone kept on connecting back and forth while after I ran the one-touch rooting program.. and nothing worked. My phone is just too slow to do anything and it takes 5 seconds to actually go to a call function.
I paid freakin 300 for this and I wanna get some use of it.....
How do I root this and put on gingervolt or whatever???? T^T
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SAVE THIS POOR KID!! T^T
And just FYI.. I have a Windows 7 64bit Desktop which I tried to root my phone with but ended up failing.

Sounds like this is your first smart phone. To try and help speed out and stuff get Advanced Task Killer this will help kill the apps once you're done using them. Use the link the guy above me provided to root it once you're done You'll be able to get into CWM once you're in there make a Backup before you do anything. Once you're there then you can install a ROM such as GingerVolt which the link for this is here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326542 For the first couple of days after you've flashed GingerVolt your battery life won't be as good as it is now until the Phone is use to the new settings which you should notice more battery life once this is done sometimes worse.
Yeah, root it (follow directions EXACTLY !!!), and then Gingervolt it. NO Bloatware & once you have done both, you will have the confidence to use the Stock app installer to replace anything from the stock ROM that you want to.
Ed
I did mine for the first time last week and if you follow the directions its a snap. You will be amazed at how the phone will perform one you install gingervolt rom.
Just be patient and follow every step. Don't be like me and forget to put the phone into USB De-Bugging and Internet Connection.
Welcome. This is a great forums, and most people are here to help. Good luck with rooting, as mentioned, if you follow directions to the letter it is very hard to break anything...and if you do, these guys are awesome at getting your phone back and running in no time at all....

Follow this, except don't use a task killer. It will actually just kill performance because your phone will just restart everything the task killer closes, which drains the battery and lowers performance. Task killers are evil and for people who don't understand how android drops apps into inactive mode when they're not displayed on screen and doesn't use much of the phone resources (unless of course the program has been killed and the phone has to actively restart it).

It all depends on the permissions that are set for the app. Like I play Cut the Rope on my phone once I'm done I'll kill it with my task killer but it won't restart itself since the permissions aren't set to re-run the app once it's killed.
If worried about apps restarting get Gemini and change the startup permission. Have to be rooted though.

I'm not worried about them restarting, because 90% of the apps that a task killer would kill are apps that I use on a regular basis anyway, so they would be restarted by me launching the app. My point was that if a program isn't on the screen, it's dumped into the memory and remains idle until you go to use it. It uses very little phone resources, so killing the apps doesn't improve your phone much. Using gemini prevents apps from starting automatically, but they start and continue to run when you open them. But since it wasn't idle in the background, certain apps take forever to start, and that's even more annoying. Bottom line, root your phone, add GV2.0, don't use task killers or gemini. They're just a hassle, drain your battery, and provide no improvement to your phone.
I still use GV and my phone starts to get laggy. I use Gemini to kill apps and clear my cache alot.

I posit that doing that is why your phone gets laggy. I'm on gv2.0 with zram enabled and using rom toolbox pro to set min/Max to 245/1501 with smartass governor, and i have had 0 lag since flashing 2.0. I flashed it within a few hours of MT posting it too

My phone isn't laggy at all and I use task killers to kill apps frequently on a daily basis. I'm on GV2.0 1501/546 or something not sure of the exact number for min. But my phone runs perfectly fine when I kill apps with a task manager.
Anybody recommend a certain app to set Cpu with that's free?
So after you are rooted, and swap out your ROM with something decent, then lastly I suggest a name change...

I may seem like a noob, because I am. I just got this phone recently, installed a bunch of apps including blackmark (free apps) but ever since my phone has slowed down drastically, and unless I have no tasks running answering a call takes forever, and by then the phone usually just freezes up and makes it impossible to answer a call. I'm not rooted, but I have thought about rooting but it seems too complicated.
Please any help would be nice!

Root would not solve the problem. Look in settings/apps/running and see of there are any background processes hogging cpu and memory, then uninstall them. The stock apps shouldnt cause any issues, user apps just uninstall from the launcher by hitting the settings icon in top right corner and hitting the app you want to delete. Failing this perform a factory reset, but backup anything on your internal sd you want to keep as it will get wiped
