I have been desperately trying to root my son's Captivate after installing KK4 using Heimdall one click. No matter what method I try, either using Odin to flash Corn Kernel 6.03 or Autoroot-Design Gears/stock KK4, I get the same message on Odin:
Added
Odin v.3 engine
File Analysis
Setup Connection
Initialization
Get PIT for mapping
Firmware update start
zimage
Complete (write) operation failed
After the failure I have to flash Heimdall again to unbrick it. I did not have this kind of problem when I rooted my cappy, but it was done with KI3 I believe, before KK4 was officially released. How can I go about correcting this, it's getting quite frustrating. I have 2 more to go after this one.
Thanks for any assistance!
I'm sure you've done this, but try using a different USB port/cable.
also you could try re downloading ODIN
If that doesn't help there's a long method to get to stock 2.3.5 with the right bootloaders which might help. If it doesn't then someone else might be better at helping you.
I've used this method when i screw things up bad many times, but it takes a lonnggg time, but it definitely works.
Try doing a one click to stock, 2.1
Then use Kies Mini, which is samsung's windows desktop application to update your software. Once you have kies mini then upgrade to 2.2, then 2.3 after. Once there you've for sure got the stock gingerbread bootloaders you should re try flashing kernels and what not. there's probably a quicker way to do it, but it's worked for me sure fire many times.
You mention that you have two more to go after your son's. I'd just use the kies mini and update them to ATT's 2.3.5 then go from there...
let me know if it works, i hope this helps.
There a way to do it need to put you phone in download mode then
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386924 hope this helps it has bootloaders with or without it works anytime i need to go back stock already rooted and debloated

Tried several different cables to no avail. Researched Heimdall one-click Apex. After a little reading and You Tube video, I jumped in and kept my fingers crossed. It worked. Was then able to go to the ROM that I wanted. I am surprised that there are not more Heimdall One-Clicks out there ready to be flashed. I've had much more success with Heimdall that Odin. Thanks a bunch!
Same luck with Heimdall. Odin sux on some phones. AdamOutler rulez!

So I am returning my phone to samsung, and need to get it back to stock firmware, but for some reason ODIN is not working. It says 'Can't open the serial(COM) port.'
So I am wondering if there is an .ZIP file of stock Bell i9000M firmware I can flash through clockworkmod?
Thanks!

Stock ROMs by their very nature are provided only in tar's for Odin, as that's how they come from Samsung.
When folks modify them and generate update zips, they typically make them into "custom ROMs" and perform many other changes since there is no sense in re-releasing the same thing.
I would try to get Odin working...make sure you have correct drivers installed, are using a good USB cable, and have Odin 1.3 or 1.7, and that Kies is uninstalled or completely disabled. If necessary try another PC. Odin is the best and easiest way to flash back to stock.
Thank you! I didn't know there was a newer version of ODIN, I was using v1.0, download v1.3 and its working fine!

Yeah Odin 1.0 is junk and doesn't work at all for but 1.3 or 1.7 are all good

Similar to Masterslackers issue.
The phone was originally a stock Optus Éclair 2.1. About 6 months ago I decided to customize the i9000 with a custom Froyo 2.2.1 Rom (Doc's Rom Docs_XWJS3_Wipe-v9_1) from “The ROM Kitchen”. It worked really well and was much faster and responsive..
Yesterday, I decided to look at a move to Gingerbread and cook another ROM @ the ROM Kitchen, this time a Gingerbread 2.3.4 iteration.
The phone was rooted so I used Rom Manager to get into recovery mode where I could flash my new, Doc's JVR_No_Wipe-v8-00-08-22-10-09-4e6a8e4e86718.zip Rom.
All seemed to go well, but after the Flash, as the phone booted the first screen became filled with 100s of random coloured lines, then it transitioned to the normal Samsung start animation, but soundless.
After booting, I noticed that I no longer had a notification bar where battery, time, signal strength etc. was normally displayed atop the screen. I tried several different launchers to see if that was the issue, but to no avail. I tried to enable the notification bar using Go Launchers gesture setting (no go)
I tried rebooting the phone over and over, the notification bar would not return.
I was starting to lament my decision to flash when the following occurred.
I tried to re-enter recovery mode via ROM Manager to install a different ROM, but the phone bypassed it and then hung @ the Samsung I9000 logo screen. I then had to power the phone off before it would reboot into its UI. I could no longer reach recovery mode by any means.
Because I was getting nowhere and I had read that after flashing a new rom, root would often be lost, so I tried rerooting with "XXJVP-Complete-Rooting-Package" from
http://androidadvices.com/how-to-root-galaxy-s-on-android-2-3-4-xxjvp-firmware/ This also failed but it has also left me with a soft bricked phone.
The phone will not boot up or boot into recovery now, however It would still boot into (3 button) download mode.
I have tried various versions of Odin from v1.0 to v4.28 to ReFlash the phone back to life but with no success yet.
Using Odin, the phone hangs with no sign of progress and reports the following when left for 30minutes or so.
<ID:0/003> Added!!
<ID:0/003> Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)..
<ID:0/003> File analysis..
Anyone have any suggestions that might help to get the phone back.
Thanks, TeZ
So you didn't flash stock gingerbread before flashing custom rom? so you should first flash stock jvr and do hard reset after booting. Then you are safe to flash cwm capable kernel and custom rom.
For the odin problems, maybe you have kies running in background? Kill all kies processes and try again.
And I'd suggest reading all guides found in romkitchen thread..it saves lots of trouble. Hope that can fix your phone

Agree with above post, if you have Klies on your pc/laptop uninstall it, and re download the drivers, i have a good 2.3.4 tutorial and root 2.3.4 tutorial, both with Odin, let me know if interested. Also if you have heimdall installed then uninstall it also.
After you unistalled Kies (or at least stop it) and installed the drivers , pick a stock rom with bootloader from Ramad collection http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 .
I prefer Odin 1.82.
If you still unable to flash your phone, please follow steps from this guide to see how can debrick your phone.

Thanks for that, I did install kies after I bricked it, in the hope (probably missguided) that it would somehow help. Uninstalling

Thanks for your input, right now i need all the help I can get, hadn't heard of heimdall before. I guess its one more thing I could try if all else fails. But right now I'm going to try a few more conventional things with odin, like flash a stock rom etc.

Thanks for the info, running out of time today, will try for tomorrow
When moving from a froyo (2.2) rom to gingerbread, (2.3), you need the gingerbread bootloaders or you'll get all sorts of crap when turning on your phone (ie what you have).
Use odin to flash back to froyo, or flash a gingerbread firmware that comes with bootloaders. (I would recommend going back to froyo first to make sure everything is ok, since flashing bootloaders is a bit risky, as messing it up can permanently brick your phone)

Ok, here's where I'm at:
For the sake of simplicity I will detail what gave positive results rather than a tirade of what didn't.
Uninstalled Kies, rebooted
As instructed, went to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
downloaded: Odin v1.82
downloaded: Gingerbread 2.3.3 (Australia and New Zealand)
XWJVN/XXJVQ/XSAJV5/Sbl (CSC: XSA): Download (150 MB) (Build date: Sun Jul 10 11:30:54 KST 2011)
Loaded up Odin and followed instructions.
Flash went ahead as normal and I now have a working phone again, thanks to you DSGE, I'm a very happy man
So I now have Gingerbread 2.3.3 installed and running.
My only issue's now is, that.
1. Half my apps dont work now or force close even after a reinstall.
2. Some apps won't install at all IE; my fav launcher; Go Launcher
3. I no longer have root access so Rom Manager and Titanium backup wont work.
4. My Backup Pro, works after I rewrote the correct path to the External Sd, but do I want to do that just yet? and just how much data should I reinstate so I don't corrupt the new system?
What should I do now?
Install busybox?
do a hard reset?
Flash a different Rom that will work for me?
Thanks so very much for all the good advise.
Cheers
First root the phone, then either a different rom, or format system and re install 2.3.3 or which ever u just installed, i think ure apps are not working due to the phone needing a wipe/reset and cache cleared from clockwork recovery

Hello friends,
I have been a silent follower of this forum for more than 5 years and I never needed to post anything because I was able to find everything and I am very thankful to all the developers out there.
But today I couldn't get something done with my phone. I had samsung captivate (at&t) which for some reason couldn't start up so at&t had to exchange it for me ( that was few months back). For past few weeks I have been trying to root this new phone ( also samsung captivate), but I cannot get it to root. I searched all over the place and tried to root the device for nearly 5-7 times using odin, but no luck.
Today I used the easy root by red_81 (corn kernel 7.0a). Again it was an unsuccessful attempt. The installation freezes at the zImage step during the kernel installation.
Help with this will be really appreciated.
MY PHONE INFO:-
Model number- SAMSUNG - SGH - I897
Firmware version - 2.3.5
Baseband version - I897UCKK4
Kernel version - 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489
Build number - GINGERBREAD.UCKK4
Also I read it in some post that there is some info under the battery it says 10.07. I don't know if that is helpful but I just mentioned it so.
I will be waiting for the reply. Thanks in advance.

U could also just flash KK4 Corn Kernel (i recommend versions 6.03 or 7.0A) through Odin or Heimdall, because u can get Root through the CWM Recovery that is included with these kernels.

Hey treygrizzard, I tried the option 1 from the link you provided but it didn't work (again it freezes at zImage) and I also tried option 2.
surprising think happened with option 2 I downloaded cornkernel 7.0A (odin flashable) and it finished all the steps but when I went into the recovery mode it didn't have "root" option, and the kernal version didn't change in my phone ("about phone" option). I don't know what should I do?
Did u look under the "advanced" tab while in the cwm recovery of corn kernel v7.0A ? The option for Root should be under that.
The name of the kernel may not be changed under About phone because it might not have been built in by the Dev, but it has been in some of the newer versions.

Thanks

The problem has got to be something with the micro usb/usb cable, usb port...or something in relation to these. U need to get a different cable and try. Also be sure on ur pc that u r using a usb port that is in the back of the desktop. Don't use a usb hub. Check the micro usb port on the phone to make sure it is clean of dirt, etc.
Also u could try a different pc. And u could look into using Heimdall instead of Odin, if all else fails.

Ok so far I tired flashing the same .tar file you attached in previous post using heimdall (followed instructions from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide).
It didn't help either, it showed an ERROR and than session was ended.
I also tried using different port on my laptop.
My next try is to use desktop computer with the back usb port. I don't have an extra micro USB cable so I have buy another one, so till then I will try to use my desktop computer and see if that helps.
I will keep you posted. Thanks for all the help so far.
at the risk of repeating some of the instructions from other threads . .
have you tried removing the battery and sim card, then without battery or sim in phone, going into download mode with vol up-down keys held while connecting usb?
that was the only way I could get my cappy to flash properly with the design gears kernal rooting method from stock gb kk4. then I flashed corn successfully, when already rooted.

First of all thanks for your advice and I tired the way you said but it didn't help. OK so now my phone is successfully rooted. Thanks to everyone who put in their advice, especially 4.2ndtwin. I really appreciate your help and answering all the questions.
So basically I think my laptop USB ports doesn't allow me to root, I used my friend's laptop and it work very well and my phone is now rooted using corn kernel. My next step is to install serendipty rom. How is that rom for captivate? any advice on good roms out there that I should try it on my phone. I will also search around the forum to see other people's responses and my choices.
Hi everyone,
I was on stock Gingerbread UCKE3.
I tried installing Speedmod kernel so that I could flash Cyanogenmod 9 using this method, however it didn't work and the phone was softbricked. Which was still alright, because I could still unbrick it every time with One-Click Unbrick.
So I decided to flash back to stock JF6 with Odin one-click, and it was stuck at sbl.bin for an hour. So I unplugged the phone, and it wouldn't power on anymore.
Almost every, if not all, unbricking threads I've read in this forum suggested flashing back to stock ROM using the very same Odin one-click that messed up my phone.
Right now I still can get into download mode, but I'm not sure whether I should flash it back using that Odin one-click.
Any idea? I really don't want to hardbrick my phone.
edit: I understand that the bootloaders are now messed up (primary = Gingerbread, secondary = Eclair). Would it be a good idea to flash back to stock Gingerbread UCKE3 (or even UCKF1)?
U were really really close to being hard bricked. The jf6 boot.bin had already flashed and apparently, thankfully for u, the sbl.bin had finished flashing even though it showed to be stuck there. Whew !!
If ur bootloaders were mix matched... GB / Eclair, u would be hard bricked. If u can still get in download mode then u r not hard bricked.
If it was my phone then i would use Odin or Heimdall Stock GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 One Click or the i897ucKK4 Full Firmware (whichever works best for the phone--some models don't like the one clicks) and flash it to Stock GB i897ucKK4 with Bootloaders. And then after that u don't need to flash a stock package with bootloaders again. And if u ever want to go back to Stock again, just go back to Stock KK4 with NO bootloaders.
Be sure u have a reliable micro usb/usb cable, constant power source to ur pc, use a usb port in the back of the pc, not u hub. And take a look at jmtheiss' stickied thread in the General forum ---Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help.

Hi 4-2ndtwin, thanks for replying. I had actually hardbricked my phone before your reply, so I sent it for jtag, and it's now back on Gingerbread UCKE3.
My main concern now is to root it and to upgrade it to Cyanogenmod 9. I can't seem to find any root method that doesn't mention upgrading to UCKF1 first. I had tried zroot and this anyway but they didn't work.
I'd be willing to upgrade to UCKK4 if it means I can root it later, though I'm unsure whether I should install bootloaders or not this time, because I'm coming from UCKE3. After all, mixed up bootloaders were what bricked my phone, and I really can't afford to hardbrick it again.
See TRusselo's Guide that is a stickied thread in this Q & A forum.
There is no need to get Root in order to flash a custom Rom. That guide will help u get to CM9.

Ok so using Odin oneclick to unbrick my semibrick samsung captivate its all set and good, but then i root it. Thats successful as well, but then i try to use odin 3.07 to install the GB Kernel after installing the rooted MUGU into it and when my phone boots it INSTANTLY glitches and i have to go back to Odin oneclick to bring it back to 2.1 which i believe is Eclair.
Any help would be appreciative and thank you
I believe ur problem is that u r trying to flash a GB kernel on Eclair firmware. So...
Update to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread here...Stock GB i897ucKK4
You will need to use a one click with the GB Bootloaders. Heed all warnings about flashing BLs. U do not want to break the connection during the few seconds that the bootloaders are being flashed, i.e. power, usb/micro usb cable. And once u have flashed the Stock GB KK4 one click with bootloaders, there is no need for u to flash back to stock eclair with its bootloaders. If u ever need to flash back to a Stock firmware to fix something or whatever, just use one of the KK4 one clicks without the bootloaders included.
Get Root and/or KK4 Corn Kernel that has CWM Recovery included so that u can move on to flashing Dev Roms here...[Utility] KK4 Easy Root. See post 4 in this thread for a working download link.
Read carefully. Read some more. Understand what ur doing and the risks involved. Proceed. Enjoy. Be sure to at least hit the Dev's thanks buttons because they have worked hard and spent a lot of time doing what they do.
Ok so if i remember correctly(i am not on my comouter right now) odin 3.07 has a BL slot and the PDA slot. If i input the GB BL into the BL slot and the KK4 into the kernel slot would i be able to run them under the same odin setup or would i have to run the BL restart my phone into download mode and THEN run it again? Sorry im a huge noob when it comes to flashing, i onlt found out about it from my stepdad who put Darkstar on his Note

The Odin or Heimdall One Clicks that I linked above will do it all for u. There are instructions included in those downloads.
