Hi, i recently updated to a new custom rom.(from rocket rom gb v23 to rocket rom ics v1)
Unfortunately it looks like installing the new custom rom made me lose my root privileges on the phone.
Is there a quick way to root the phone again?
Do i need to follow the guides to root the stock rom and apply them to the custom rom or is it different?
Thanks
If I were you I would be careful since RR ICS has a Samsung kernel that might have the brick bug..
You're better of using PC Odin and flash one of the prerooted GB ROMs, get CF-Root for it and then flash RR ICS from there again if you would like
The thing is that i was on a cf-rooted gb custom rom before flashing rr ics v1, but on rr thread, in order to install the ics rom from the gb one, they say to first flash abyss kernel 4.2 - full wipe - and the install the ics rom.
I think that's the passage where i lost root, but i may be wrong.
Would restoring a clockworkmod backup with gb custom rom(rr v23) be ok?
One more question, what's the difference between flashing with odin(never used) and flashing from recovery?
Thanks for your reply
Flashing through AbyssKernel should not cause you to loose root, it just sometimes happens :/
I think it would be safer to follow the PC Odin route and flash a prerooted GB ROM, get CWM recovery and then do your flashing/restoring from there
PC Odin communicates directly to the bootloader when flashing, hence it's safer, while CWM uses the current kernel you have so if you're on an affected kernel you're at risk

i9220lp1 ics repack....So im guessing im on the dangerous leak?
if so here are a couple of questons
what are the exact steps/files do i do to get back to a safe base?
once im on the safer GB rom base how can you flash ics roms? as iirc most of them all say to flash the ics repack?
if im safe already...I do not have root!!!
What is easiest and safest way to get root back?
either way as it stands i have no root and need the safest method here
there are lots of threads on how to revert from ics to gb
the only safe one at the moment seems to the cm9 which doesnt require any repack to get working
Download a stock GB rom.
Flash that rom with PC Odin.
Get root and CWM (if the stock rom was not pre rooted)
Download CM9 and the Gapps zip file.
Reboot into recovery
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
Flash the CM9 rom from recovery
Flash Gapps zip from recovery
Wipe Cache/dalvik
Reboot and enjoy.
There are plenty of topics about all of the above steps if you are unsure.
FYI: CM9 uses its own kernel which is NOT based of the dangerous leaks and is confirmed SAFE.
I am on a stock note with ICS 4.0.3 Build number LP9 and baseband version LP5. I have already flashed franco kernel to get a permanent CWM and I am stuck on this part. There are tons of reviews and also tons of people complaing about getting bricked and I am honestly lost on what I have to do next.
I plan on using paranoid android so I'm trying to revert to gingerbread with this guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jr3DDEh8vyc&feature=plcp
but then I encountered this guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMCHeUWMvzk&feature=plcp
and it's way different on how I flashed CWM on my phone. Do I need CF root for lp9 first?? Or is it already safe to flash away since I have permanent CWM on my phone?
Thanks

All you need is right here, on dr Ketan's sticky thread.
Try using search checking the stickies before going on youtube
- LINK HERE
Just use Odin to flash a stock GB ROM and then re-root it and flash Paranoid.
It's the only 100% safe way. The 2nd, NOT SO SAFE way is by
- Flashing Abyss 4.2 RedPill Touch
- Rebooting Recovery (Advanced -> Reboot Recovery)
- Flashing GB
- Wipe Data
Again, I would STRONGLY recommend using the first method.
I have been stuck at splashscreen and samsung logo a few times. Safest way I have found to flash an ICS ROM is to reflash GB (AbyssNote 3.9 or 4.2) then reboot into recovery (i.e. do NOT reboot phone - but select Advanced > Reboot into recovery) and factory reset/wipe caches. Check out the OP in Rocket ROM ICS for instructions.
hey
im currently running rooted ICS 4.0.3 XXLQ2 that i rooted with the CF-Root kernal.
My question is, is there an Abyss kernal that i can flash over that with ODIN so i can use it instead?i hear that abyss is safer than CF and you can actually install custom ROMs from it. Also, I'd usually find this info myself but everything i can find about it is a bit confused so i would like a simple yes or no answer
Cheers
Abyss is a GB kernel. DO NOT use it on ICS!
Abyss Note kernel is not compatible with ICS.
ah right OK, some folk are saying that it was compatible with ICS, so I take it my best bet for using custom ROMs would be to flash back to stock GB then flash Abyss, yeah?
EDIt: i meant to say, are there any safe custom kernals out yet for ICS that are ROM flashable and wipe-safe?
"ROM flashable and wipe-safe?"
???
once you have a rooted rom with a custom recovery like CWM then you can flash most kernels. Some kernels arn't compatable with some roms but the thread will usauly indicate which roms work best with the kernel.
I most cases when you are flashing a new ics rom it is not safe to do a full wipe.
I have just upgraded to rocket rom v6 i did not full wipe when flashing but once the rom was up and running i just go back to cwn and do a full wipe, seems to work for me.
Hope this gives you some info on the matter.

what i meant by wipe safe and rom flashable is that im not gonna brick the phone by doing a factory data wipe or by flashing a custom rom, from what i have read if you flash from pretty much any ICS kernal to a custom rom its an insta-brick
You had the right idea at first. Some ics kernels (eg Franco, cf and speedmod) are probably safe to wipe with. I say probably because they have had the emmc wipe command removed.
But to be guaranteed, reboot into cwm (assuming you are already rooted) then flash abyss 4.2 GB. I use the red version so I can be sure I am flashing from GB.
Then reboot to recovery. Do not reboot the phone - it will not work - but it will happily boot to recovery. You are now in GB recovery and can wipe with no risk of brick bug at all. Flash any cwm flashable rom. Just make sure you had copied it to your SD card before you started this process!!!

Hi,
i came from CheckROM GB to ICS ROM.Initially tried both Criskelo's and Kingdroid and got stuck in nandroid backups and install zip into system.Hangs.Found out that the problem is partial root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828538.
Tried to reflash ROM with CF kernel, install SuperSU,superuser all failed
So right now i am going back to GB first to install ICS ROM then custom ICS ROM to get full root.
I looked at dr. ketan's thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 and downloaded the pre-rooted ROM SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip. I would like to claify something before i proceed.
-Currently on Kindroid + CF root kernel.I can just go ahead and start flashing the pre-rooted GB ROM right?safe?
-So after installation,"Wipe cache, data and delvic cache from recovery"-Wipe everything from recovery meaning factory reset?
-Copy ICS ROM file in .tar (you want to flash) to Internal SD card (recommended, but you can have it on EXT too)-any ICS ROM?

1-As such there is no issue to flash any GB ROM on Any stock/custom ROM. yes it is safe.
2- yes it will be factory reset, when you wipe data.
3-This step is righ if you want to use Mobile Odin Pro for stock ICS (for custom ROM you need to use CWM, not mobile odin)
Thanks for quick reply.
As by searching i am going to follow this step by step guide>http://www.geekyandroid.com/2012/05/how-to-downgrade-ics-on-samsung-galaxy.html (Have to turn OFF USB debugging?)
Does this pre-rooted ROM come with CWM?Once i factory reset it,does it retain root?
Yes said prerooted ROM having CWM
And hard reset doesn't erase root/CWM
Humble request, stick to XDA. Difficult to give opinion on all guides around planet.
Ha,OK..just randomly searching ard on google for downgrade steps.
Do u have a step by step guide on the GB downgrade part, the one i saw on yr sig is after flashing back to ICS.thanks for yr help!
Post #2 of first link on my signature have guide how to Install rootable GB ROM, here same way you can flash prerooted GB ROM.
OK just successfully flashed back to GB..Thanks!
sorry can i ask i can download any ics ROM?is there any recommendation?
For kernel selection,is it safe not to select CF root?will be get the partial root problem again?
You can have any stock ics
Use notecore kernel.

Ok.thanks.So thankful for yr patience and help!
In summary
I downloaded ICS stock ROM + NoteCore Kernel, open Mobile Odin,Flash them.So I would have Rooted ICS with custom kernel
then if i would like custom ICS ROM,i flash in CWM after install stock ROM:
-Need full wipe?
-is abyss kernel essential for flashing?
-OK to flash kernels other than CF root for custom ROM,root will stay intact?
Hi
I want to return my Note to stock. When I first bought it I rooted it and made a nandroid of the stock ICS rom that was on it.
Since then I have installed Alliance Rom on Jellybean. Can I just restore the stock ICS nandroid straight over the JB rom or will this brick my phone? I've read that there's something about ICS stock kernels that can cause bricks so I'm a bit nervous about how to go about it.
I have already downloaded the two files from the unroot thread to remove superuser and binaries, do I just flash these after restoring the ICS nandroid? Also, how do I get back the stock recovery?
Sorry for such basic questions but I'm new to the Note and it's a bit different to flashing things on the One X which I came from.
Thanks x
yes.. you can restore the stock rom nandroid.. but i am not sure as Alliance JB LSZ use TWRP recovery and the backup you made may be using CWM.. so its better to install a CWM kernel on the rom... Like philz and then restore the rom,, for stock recovery you will need to install stock kernel..
but why go into so much trouble ... just install a stock ICS rom using pc odin.. (no wipes after installing stock ICS rom).. make all the wipes while on a safe kernel

Thank you very much for explaining, that's a big help
The Odin way does sound a bit easier, I'll look into it. Thanks for explaining about the ICS wiping problem.
Much appreciated
