I am in Stunner now and I've known that it involved a leaked kernel that would be dangerous. I want to go to to Stock GB then upgrade to latest release of 4.0.3 stock. What is the safest way to go?
Thanks for answering!

Direct flashing to ICS won't get bricked??
I just did that. Just flash your stock rom after backing up all ur data. You will have stock rom, kernel etc.

The easiest and quickest way would be this:

If you get a bootloop after the flash, do this:

If you don't want pre-rooted, it's even easier. Just download any flash using PC Odin any stock Rom from Dr.Ketan's thread.

Is it recommended to backup on unsafe ICS kernels?
No, cause that is pointless. You cant restore that backup safely.

Agreed, there are other ways to back up valuable data, and it's easy enough to get back to unsafe ICS if there is ever reason to without maintaining a nandroid backup with potentially fatal results.
In the result of an eMMC failure brick it is safe to assume that a backup which includes an unsafe ICS kernel will do nothing for you but cause potential for problems if you ever lose track of it and get it mixed up with good backups.
I was not exactly referring to nandroid backup, I don't even think about entering recovery mode on LPY.
Titanium Backup is OK?
pc odin flash stock gb
and thn update to ics
I don't know about backing up apps in ICS and moving back to GB. I always just consider it a loss and move on. If you have a way to offload your important files to a computer, then I would just do that.
I have tried using TB in the past, but ran into too many issues to consider it worth it.

Using PC Odin you'll be able to flash a gb rom if you like. You'll have to go into download mode and flash from there.

you can revert to stock GB via ODIN (the safest way)
if I were you I wouldn't install LPF ROM yet! It's not confirmed safe, it could damage your emmc storage if you do wipe in recovery!

Yes it will.
But better use safe kernels.
DAFUQ, Franco kernel version 3 and above, SpeedMod 3-3 are safe ICS kernels.
You can use CF-Root 5.6 (only 5.6, not older versions) as well.
CF-Root 5.6 is safe to restore backups and perform wipe data/factory reset but Don't flash something that contains FORMAT command - esp custom ROMs / Update.zip.
And better read the forums before you play with it.
Don't quite understand what it safe kernet. Is stock Rom unsafe? But thanks. Mobile odin won't work?
Stock ICS ROMs are not safe. I recommend you to use a CM9 kernel and also flash a CM9 or AOKP ROM. This way you won't have any problems. And yes, it can be done with either Mobile Odin or CWM, but you must root your GB ROM first.

Task easy.
First choose an ICS Rom of your choice, and a safe kernel. Then check Enable everroot, Inject super user in mobile ODIN to make sure that you have root and SU after installation.

It is interesting. May be I'll wait for a while with ICS.
I'm being a right pain in the bum now ain't I!
Been searching the forum and it seems I have to go back to GB to install another rom?
I thought it was the stock kernel that it was unsafe to flash from, so I installed Franco kernel thinking it would be okay then...but apparently not?
So is there a rom out there that I can flash nice and safely with ics on Franco?
my suggestion is: until you feel perfectly safe, don't take shortcuts (unless explicitly suggested by ROM/kernel developer),
I mean, flashing full GB to flash another ROM, may seem a waste of time, as there are faster methods (e.g.via abyss), but why take the risk?
to answer your question, afair franco kernel should have the fatal command disabled, but check in his thread to be absolutely sure

I wouldn't know what I should be looking for tbh, does he still post on the thread? I guess I could ask on the thread, as I assume it has hundreds of posts on there to wade through lol thanks
It's just my initial thought was it's the kernel that makes it dangerous, and not ics itself...

Quite a few custom Roms require you to install from gb, not because of the kernel issues, but for other reasons which I'm not too clear on. For instance if you flash paranoid over Ics rom with safe kernel, chances are you'll brick. Always follow the rom threads directions, never try shortcuts and 99% of the time you won't have any issues at all.

Alright, but don't you have to flash GB using PC Odin, or can I use mobile Odin? Or can I use cwm?
It's recommended to use PC odin although I think it's okay from mobile odin also. I wouldn't use cwm as that utilises the existing kernel.

You do not really have to flash the full rom. Just flash via mobile odin the abyssnote 39 or 42, reboot to that kernel and flash your custom rom via cwm.
I have flashed stock gb and/or ics back and forth from within mobile odin without issues.

This is a custom Kernel which includes root and cwm recovery, ROMs includes their own kernels, so you do not have to flash kernel every time unless you need some kernel of your choice.
The method which you want to follow is the safest method to root but it will raise binary count and yellow triangle, which can be removed using triangle away app by chainfire.
---------- Post added at 09:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:32 PM ----------
Yes you can flash any rom after rooting and flashing cwm recovery but make sure you flash some safe kernel before performing full wipe in recovery, I recommend using Abyss GB kernel for that. You do not have to download any kernel for Rocket ROM, it has its own kernel but make sure to flash Abyss kernel in recovery and then reboot to recovery and perform full wipe before installign Rocket ROM.
Speedmod kernel is good and will work on all TW ICS roms.
Follow the instructions given in Dr ketan's thread in Android developement
This method seems the quickest and its done by cursed4eva on youtube. You dont loose no data or apps. It only works for ics 4.0.
You flash cwm and then superSU and your rooted. Lastly you flash speedmod kernal by mobile odin and thats it.
This method takes afew mins and does not mess up anything. Video tutorial is great but from your replies, when i go onto flashing roms etc i just flash them in recovery as normal right??

Do not use this touch recovery method, this has been reported unsafe, you will end up with a brick in your hand. It is better you use custom kernel to root and flash cwm recovery. Flashing custom kernel does not wipe your data.

Okay, lets start, i used few short word as was using note to write,
Best app to backup apps is titanium backup but dont think it can restore odexed apps (apps on stock rom) so i prefer root explorer to remove apps from system and save them on sd card.
All newest custom kernels are known to be safe but better you go through kernel threads to be sure, since you are rooted now so can use mobile odin to flash kernel.
Best way to flash custom roms is cwm recovery.
And there is no best custom rom, as all are best, it depends on your choice.
Yellow triangle doesnt affect anythin except claiming warranty.
Hope this helps

Can u flash stock roms thoe also?
As for the backups of all data, cant a nanroid backup be done? Titanium says it backs up everything but then their is a appp called mybackup which is for root and says it does the same thing. Damn maybe your way might work but 2morrow i will flash a new rom for sure so all help is welcomed....thank you kindly.
Yes you can flash custom roms but just make sure you are on one of the latest safe ics custom kernel (go through kernel threads), you can download your stock firmware as backup and backup downloaded apps using titanium backup, thats it.

What do i use to back up my stock firmware? Is that the nandroid back up in recovery
Yeh for the apps i might just use titanuim or my back up. Both of em seem to work for that purpose.
Mobile odin seems like a great app but it seems ppl just flash kernals with it but that can be done in recovery right.
Yes you can flash kernel through recovery but custom only, for stock you have to use odin/mobile odin.
Yes you can do nandroid backup but it was not recommended so far as it was not safe on ics kernels but now some custom kernels/cwm recovery are safe for it. But I personally dont use it, i have my stock firmwares on my pc as backup, best for me.

Downloading stock gingerbread for your region as backup is best in my opinion, you can always flash it through odin when required and can update via kies or OTA, You can download latest ICS as well and keep it on your PC, your wish. not sure about nandroid backup, never used on Note.
