I was using stock V10G rooted, with nova kernel and GPS Fix.
everything was fine but that rom was a bit slow, so i was testing sometimes marvel since v5, only for a few hours just to see performance differences.
When marvel v8 came out, i installed it among with all my new applications from scratch.
I did not use viber and skype yet, so i was closing/opening wifi just to see how far i can go with my battery.
When i found out that battery life was good enough for my needs, i chose in wifi settings to "never" turn off when screen is locked... having all the time my wifi enabled.
The issue appeared, when i was going from home to my office.
At home, my cellphone was connected all the time even when screen off, viber/skype calls incoming anytime... but when i was going to my office, phone wasnt connecting automatically on the new router...!!
Everytime im going from home to work or from work to home, i have to turn on my screen, wait a few seconds and it connects. Sometimes it doesnt connect but only does it when i open wifi settings. Just open settings without touching anything!
Noticed that everytime that happens, it has the old location wifi signals aqquired... and when i open settings after 1 - 2 seconds it refreshes back to the new location and connects.
Anybody has a clue about what's going on?
I've tried stock ROMs / Zeus rom / Marvel rom without success.
Does the secret menu has any settings that might help?
Does it have to do with hardware failure? (no other problems, works like a charm!)
How can i give a logcat to someone who wills to help?
First of all I think this is a question thread so it should go to q&a subforum
You should select "turn off wifi when screen off" setting. Its better for your battery, I've never had that problem when I select that setting but I'm using cm7 the only time it was when the driver had a problem but after the fix now everything is good.
about logcat you can use alogcat app in play store.
FDN
apologies for wrong category posting
My head was about to explode from whole day's work + this frustration
I know that wifi policy to turn off when the screen does, saves battery, but i'd rather charge it everyday and have viber / msn open almost all the time. Let's overlook that though, because i'm in need to have wifi always on and connected when able to (that's the reason of this topic)
I'm gonna try to capture a log and post it... if that helps
are you sure it is not router related? have you tried the same "always ON" option, while in connection with other routers?
Yes of course i have the "always ON" policy of wireless settings menu.
It's not router related, because in the past, 2.2 stock rom, was working flawlessly.
Besides, since then there are no router settings changed! (Both have the same settings since installed)
The thing is, that under Menu -> connectivity -> wifi , the list is not updated if phone is in sleep mode with locked screen.
When i change my location in example and go to my office, it doesnt connect and ONLY does it when i navigate at wifi settings, while the menu refreshes at that exact time it's list with available access points.
Okay, some feedback about this
(i dont see anyone having this issue? Or noone didnt bother about checking it? :S)
I've done many times a factory reset, rom change, etc... that didnt solve my problem.
"Played" with any configuration file regarding power saving settings, wifi settings, etc.
Let my cellphone chill the f*ck out, without battery in for a day LOL
Finally, i rollbacked, at 2.2 official unrooted (V10G).
Changed ALL possible combinations of my 3 routers having stored in wifi settings!
n o t h i n g c h a n g e d !
When phone is in sleep and changes location, doesnt auto-connect in any of those wireless routers! It only does when i get to wireless settings which refreshes the list, or wait with screen on randomly from a few seconds or till infinite (never).
So, last week, 1st June 2012 i've spoken with LG customer care, arranged a courier transfer for service (not in my city) and waited till 6th june when they sent back my phone.
The authorised service, which does the job for LG phones in Greece reported:
"Wifi turns off when screen off, due to power saving policy"
O, RLY you idiots??? Dont you think i dont know it, or i didnt mentioned that on that f*ckin A4 sized page i've typed out to explain CLEARLY my problem?
Or you think im a retard??
Of course, wifi policy is set to "Never"
LG authorized service center (3rd party company) is totally crap.
I'm going to send the phone again tomorrow.
If they still dont fix the issue, then i'll demand a sure fix the hard way!

Hi everybody, new to the forums and new to droid - I recently upgraded from the Propel to the Captivate and so far I am loving it. With all the reviews and forums I read before deciding to buy most of my answers have been answered, but not all.
My phone was loaded with 2.2 and when I registered it with Samsung it showed a build date of feb/11 so I'm hoping that my phone has alot of the big fixes already loaded. I have noticed that the gps code listed on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030
Does not work on my phone, I enter *#*#1472365#*# and the last * just clears the code out of my dialer... no sub-menu, no options, nothing. Any ideas how to do gps testing?
Other question, I spend alot of time off the cell network and I need a gps that works - which app would be good to use? Searching the app store there is quite a few ranging in price, most seem to have mixed reviews. Google does nothing for me since it needs the network to pull up the maps. Basically when I load up the gps it shows me in a sea of nothingness and trying to scroll the map gives me an error 'need network connection' type of message.
Also, I've noticed what looks like 2 small led's one the face of my phone, just to the left of the speaker and the ugly logo. Are these notification leds or something else?
I don't plan on rooting or flashing my phone for a while... yes yes I know, stock sucks, but like I said I was using the Samsung Propel a couple days ago and now the Captivate - I've got alot to learn and alot to get used to before I switch things around. Yes, one day I do want to switch off of stock software just not right now, thanks for the suggestion though. lol

As for needing a GPS on without using Data there are a few but to be honest if you need it for reliable GPS, then you got the wrong device. The captivate is known for having terrible GPS and it is unrelible at best. Good enough to help you learn a new town but not good enough to get you where you need to go on time everytime. The led are the light sensors. No led Notifications with the captivte at all unless you rom a custom rom and get BLN from the app store that will light up your 4 bottom keys when you have a message.
I do have a stand alone gps, I was just hoping I'd be able to free up some pocket space with the phone - so far, it just shows a blank screen with a blue indicator and says it's accurate 'within 10 meters'. I was hoping I could find a app that provided maps and maybe help tune it a bit. Next time I'm on the network I'll play around with it and see what kind of readings it gives - even if the gps is low end, I'm still liking this phone so far... a whole lot better than the propel.
Thanks for the update, zelendel

One is a proximity sensor and one is a light sensor.
Thanks for the info, I got a couple gps test apps I'm going to mess around with in a while but, I found a new problem that is driving me crazy...
I bought a usb wifi adapter - Asus n13 (b/g/n), in the hopes of using my internet for data and my phone will not connect to wifi. Even driving around town to places that offer free open wifi, my phone will not connect. It finds the wifi hotspots, pulls up the ssid, says connecting, then gets to 'assigning ip' and freezes. On my pc wifi setup, it shows a new connection and 2 seconds later disconnect.
In the phone wifi settings, it keeps showing wifi -connecting....disconnected, back to scanning, connecting in an endless loop - but it never connects. It has the ssid remembered but I cannot delete it or reset it. WPS failed to connect from either end.
Sleep Policy is off
Use Static IP is off
This is a big issue for me since I'm on the cheap att data plan.. I've tried various settings on the pc side of things, all with the same results, I've browsed the internet and done a bit of troubleshooting (ie, different usb ports, different drivers, turning on/off services, etc etc) - I think the problem is on the phone since it does not access any wifi... maybe I missed a setting somewhere?
For now I'm going to dig through the user manual again...
OK, playing around with some of windows wireless settings I've hit a new roadblock... my phone says connecting... Obtaining IP address... Disconnecting... Scanning...
That is one small step closer I think, because it wasnt trying to get an ip address earlier, it was just connecting/disconnecting.
finally! I figured it out!!!
Just for future note.... You have to go into your windows network settings, highlight your broadband AND wifi together - select bridge... restart your pc wifi software and then connect your phone, it should start right up!

You say you do not want to root the phone. But try Launcher Pro anyways to access the LbsTestMode.
1. Sign up/in to the market.
2. Download and install Launcher Pro (it says Pro but there is a FREE version, so dont worry).
3. After install, go to home screen. Long press and choose "Shortcuts"
4. In menu, choose "Activities" (yellow icon).
5. Scroll down and expand the menu "LbsTestMode". Under this is a submenu. Choose the first "LbsTestMode" under this. Yes the main menu and submenu have same name.
6. Choose Ok or whatever, and the icon will be on your Home screen.
7. If you get this far, then you are good.
Open LbstestMode:
1. At the moment you probably should just leave Application Settings to default.
2. Under "Supl/CP settings". And change as follows:
Server: supl.google.com (no "www.")
Server Port: 7276
Secure Socket: OFF
AGPS Mode : SUPL
3. Return to previous menu.
4. DELETE GPS DATA just to clear all previous data.
5. Run "Get Position Test" on top of menu.....
Good Luck !!

Yeah, Google Maps requires a network connection.....BUT when you go into Navigation mode - via the Directions menu and turning on navigation, you get navigation. YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD VOICE SYNTHESIS from the market to get voice guidance. This a good first try, IF YOUR GPS WORKS !!
Or try NAVIGON for Android ....you can buy it but also check here www.mobilism.org (ahem..ahem). I use daily, and I think it is the best routing....
EDIT: Well...about google maps, I think you need a data connection jsut to open the damn software, so you will need Navigon, Igo primo or similar...I AM ASSUMING YOU WANT ROUTING DIRECTIONS and not hiking type positioning. Then take a look at this http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/android-gps-software AND here http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/
Thanks again for the updates, but it seems like either Samsung or ATT has locked out the Lbs Test mode feature, both of the codes have the same result - after entering the last character it clears it out. I did get LauncherPro and am really digging it so far, but even the lbs tests dont do anything, it goes to a blank screen and just sits there... I have the status bar at the top and a totally blank screen. I even set my phone down on a box out in the yard for 30+ minutes and nothing ever came up - using the google and stock settings for the test. I'm guessing if/when I root my phone the tests will work
I started using GPS Test from Chartcross Limited and GPS Status from EclipSim - both show that my gps is accurate between 16.4 and 32.8 feet - depending on which the way the wind is blowing. I've been browsing some of the other gps/map apps but for now I'll just carry around my standard gps when I need it.
Even with the gps issues, I'm really liking this phone alot. I havent really ran into any other problems yet
Hello,
I'm a newbie regarding Android, I just got a Milestone with MIUI 1.9.9. and I have some problems. First my RAM memory is 0.00 bytes and I don't know why because I'm using only email right now. Second I a have problem with WIFI, I changed the slep policy, and when I activate Wifi it's starting scanning for nothing, no wifi Network appears and when I can connect, after a whie it's disconnecting itself and doesn't reconnect.
I've read that CM7 is the best to install but I don't know how, maybe someone will help me with a turorial, I want to keep MIUI but I have these problems with it.

Try installing the app Script Manager from the Market and running Zeppelinrox's supercharging. A simple search will give you the thread.
What kind of wireless router do you have? What is the encryption?
As for CM7 (and any other ROM), you need wipe your data and both caches.
To do so, you will need to reboot into recovery, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache partition and then wipe data. Then, you flash CM7, wipe both caches, flash the google apps addon, wipe both caches again, change baseband and reboot.
I tried CM7,and now downgrade to CM6 and still no Wifi connection, it's scanning but doesn't show anything. I use a D-Link router, it's open connection. I've read somewhere that on 2.2 or 2.3 based Android versions wifi it's not working. Does anybody know a solution to this issue?...
I really need my WIFI connection.
P.S. The hardware it's ok, I went to a mobile service and they told me it must be software problem.
I'm trying to update to Eclait Teluslite but I have problems in openrecovery with and I get verifying md5 then all failed and E: Failed verifying checksums. Someome told me that with eclair solved the wifi problem
The only wifi problem we have is with the sleep policy
Try to reboot your router.
If it doesn't work try to see if you can get a connection with another one.

It's like this, I installed again MIUI, I like the interface, sometime(rarely) or only one time I can connect to my router, all working, but in a while it disconnects and after that the phone is scanning but it doesn't show me any network, just not in range. And it's doing like this in any MOD. Sleep policy is never, 13 channels, proxy on/off...nothing seems to work to find again the wifi and connect.
Check my signature, and post a kernel log, when it does that.

ok, I hope I got it right and this is the log. Wifi is activated, scanning but my network doesn't show up. I have a N900 that is working just fine with my wifi router.
Accidental call hold (upper-left corner touch issue)
Hi,
I find calls are often put accidentally on hold, as my ear touches the "hold" button on the upper left corner of the touch screen.
The functionality supposed to prevent this (the promixity/light sensor near the center of the upper border) does work when I test it manually, but apparently I tend to keep the phone at the left ear in such a position the ear doesn't cover the sensor all the time.
This has been a recurring issue on the Milestone, both the original firmware and now with cyanogenmod 7.
I remember others commenting on this when the Milestone was new. Anything in Cyanogenmod to resolve the issue? If not, a couple of alternatives come to mind
* switch the phone program to something other than the Motorola original
* if source is available, modify the phone program to have the hold button in a different place, recompile & install the modified phone program
* other suggestions?
UPDATE: Solved the issue: there's an option to hide the Hold button in cyanogenmod 7:
From general settings menu: settings --> call settings --> Hide Hold button

ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): tiwlan0: link is not ready
sorry for late reply. i had problems.
but if it starting to do that by itself "on and off" it's already been discussed as hardware related
does your wireless router has ipv6 enabled ?
try one more time this (without kernel):
logcat -f /sdcard/KernelLog.txt

This morning I found wifi, connected, working very nice and after 5 minutes it disconnected and scanning but network not in range. I restarted the router, forget the network, tried again but nothing.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5QA31IIP - KernelLog.txt
I've tested this with a3.5, Xron and Miui and they all get this problem. Maybe installing certain apps trigger this to happen but wifi will eventually slow down when trying to connect to a signal and will be essentially non functional since the OS will basically freeze and then tell you to force close wifi and it requires a wipe and fresh install to fix.
Has anyone else run into this problem?
Check this and see if it helps you.

I don't think its the same issue. In those instances you can still try to change which wifi signal you want to connect to, I think it just loops from connecting and it would disconnect. I think this issue is common and dropped connections occur as well.
But I'm talking about a situation where if you even try to enter the wifi options it will force close.

Before I changed it, it would take forever to get it to release the connection. I just kept hitting "Wait" rather than "Force close" it would take several minutes but would eventually come up and allow me to Forget the network.
It sure sounds like the same, not saying it is, but very similar.
I experienced this problem for the first time yesterday in area where was about 20 WIFI networks. Never ever it happened in my house on A2. A3 A3.5 or XRON2.8
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13779-now-i-believe-that-there-is-wifi-problem/
I have the same issue today, Wifi setting is forced to close, and cannot connect to any Wifi signals. I think it's a bug and it related to the time or date. Because I didn't do anything and it just happened.
No new apps install, no setting changed, and the device was keep on, so it just happens.
Hope someone can find out where the problem is...so sad this happen on New Year's eve....
i have this problem also, the solution i found was letting the touchpad go dead and than begin to connect wifi again.
Similar wifi comments here: rebooting [or maybe toggling/other disconnect] with wifi on/remembered would get it into a state where it was scanning and connecting over and over without really ever working. this was only happening once it was 'remembered'. Going through the wifi settings to forget in this state involved hitting 'wait' a few times and then i'd reboot and readd. 1st wifi connect is always solid for me.
I've found: market.android.com/details?id=com.brilliapps.wifiandmorefixer
Does the same thing except it is one click. I rebooted after the first go, but now no longer. i run this and then readd wifi - all set.
Unfortunately since I installed GB stock rom my GPS apps don't find satellites at all. Anybody knows a fiy for this? it worked perfectly on froyo.

For me "GPS status" (market) helps in these situations (topogigi says the following in the FAQ of his thread, but it should work for you as well):
"If you want a quick fix, you have to sit down in an open space with a large slice of visible sky above you. You should have already installed on your phone a really valuable app called "GPS Status". You haven't got it? Fire up the Market, search it and install it: it's free for everyone. Then turn off wifi and turn on wireless data. Ephemeris data download and position data based on cell triangulation are available only with wireless data enabled and they are inhibited by a special setting in the gps configuration file when wifi is on. Tap the app icon, then look at the status bar: is there a small icon radar-shaped blinking on the status bar (upper part of the screen)?
CASE 1) Yes, I see it! It's blinking continuously!
CASE 2) No, nothing changed.
If your fall in CASE 2, there is really something wrong with GPS on your phone. You can try the following workaround, but if it doesn't work there's no remedy other than filing a bug alert in the thread and patiently wait until the bug will be solved.
WORKAROUND:
- Enter Hidden menu typing 1809#*990# on the phone pad
- Select "GPS Test"
- Go to "SULP Settings" and create a new SLP Server with the following parameters:
name: Nokia
slp address: supl.nokia.com
port: 7275
leave certification file and TLS settings as blank
- go back, and flag "SLP Auto provision" as enabled
- select your APN for SLP from "APN Settings"
- go back 2 times and select "Get position"
- select menu-> start
- at this point, you could notice that no satellite appear. Dont't worry, carry on....
- select menu-> Settings then change some parameters as "Session Type" and "Oper Mode"
- go back and select Stop and Start again
- repeat the last three steps until you get a fix and the gps icon in the status bar remains steady after the fix.
If you fall into CASE 1), look at the yellow bars indicating the number and the signal level of each satellite. When the bars will be more than 4 and the length of each bar will be enough to get a fix (the longer the bars, the stronger the signal), the bars will turn into green and you have got the first fix (how lucky you are, huh?). The time it will take is not fixed, though: it depends on weather, correct download of ephemeris data, radio interferences and so on. So, the bottom line is: BE PATIENT! There is no rule of thumb for measuring the time a fix will take. In some conditions, you will get it in a few seconds, in other conditions it will take minutes. Now that you've got a fix, try to move a little bit around. The radar-shaped icon should be steady now and the bars should remain green. If you see the icon disappearing after the fix, you are falling into CASE 2). Try the workaround mentioned before and if it fails, file a complaint into the thread.
DO NOT FILE A BUG ALERT ON GPS WITHOUT HAVING ALREADY TRIED ALL THE PROCEDURES LISTED ABOVE! It will be simply ignored."
Your device is rooted? Then you could try this with CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1066933
Ive had this problem too, on Stock GB ROM.
what I did was installed the 2.1.6 MIUI ROM and edited the GPS settings from there.
The settings I copied was from a Nexus ONE MIUI ROM.
Now it works like a dream.
Thanks for the answers I'll try gps status

And no surprise I have got this issue to, since I updated the stock rom (oh joy, thank you so much LG). However, it would get a lock, then drop the lock (within seconds) then search again for a few minutes.. get a lock maybe.. then drop it within seconds.
Now today in the open air, I cannot get a lock.
So.. I downloaded "GPS Status & Toolbox" and because I cannot stand adverts.. I donated the small amount for the program patch to remove adverts ('GPS Status Donation').
I'm now just running this on my phone (but by a window.. to try and get a lock).
Hopefully I can get it working
Many thanks for the tip, I'll let you know either way #
EDIT: Well... it seems I may have been hasty, as I just turned off the wifi and I think that was stopping the GPS from working lol. But anyway.. is there a hack to get the wifi and GPS working together?
hi
I had the same problems as you, with GPS (and some other) issues - I have always been on stock Rom.
then I got fed up with this and decided to try Temasaks Cyanogenmod7 Kang ROM last week - and have not looked back since!
GPS is working within seconds, new cool lock screen, and everything is running much more fluently! Other problems I had are also gone.
battery time is equal or better, as stock!
/René
Well... I don't know what I've done... some fiddling with the GPS options in the hidden menu, and now it is working flawlessly.
Also... I'm on the google supl, and not the nokia one... and it still works fine.
I have made some other changes anyway.. but regardless it basically just seem to take some fiddling with it to get it to work. I now get locks within about 5 to 10 secs even indoors (10 sats seen, 6-8 locked INDOORS!). Hopefully that won't change if I reset the phone.
My settings are:
GPS session type: 'Tracking' (not single fix)
Oper Mode: MS-Based (to help with initial lock, but then use GPS completely)
Horizontal Accuracy: 30 (Stock was 50.. I think this is in metres)
SLP Auto Provision: Enabled (I don't even know what this means!!? lol)
SLP Server Setting: OPEN(Google) (Although I added the nokia one as well)
Auto Cold Start: Disabled
UPDATE: You know what... I thought it was working... so I reset my device with GPS off. When it came on, I tested GPS, and it showed that it was working and see's the satellites. BUT.. in GPS Status Tool, I see that the GPS symbol dissappears, and the 'update' time does not update. So basically.. it's relying on the cell towers rather than the GPS towers. I turned the phone off with GPS enabled... turned on again, and now it's working correctly with GPS doing it's thang. AFter my experiences in being in an office with a terrible signal... I reckon that there is a setting in the code somewhere that doesn't allow the GPS to be used, or it's forcing it to only use tower's and wifi as a means of location, and ignoring the GPS. Very odd. But it works now, as everyone has seen, it's just a shame that what really is quite a fundamental feature of the phone, LG decided not to fix.
It works, thanks. It is wery cloudy but i got gps in 15sec

try this too,
turn on your GPS.
reboot your phone (with GPS ON)
try again. see if it can lock faster.

That's what I suggested in the update. It's obviously a flaw in the code (thanks LG) that you have to turn the phone on with the GPS enabled for it to work. Now major issue really to leave it enabled anyway, hardly takes any power when not in use, I just wish I knew why this was the case, that you have to have it enabled at power on time. Bizarre.
It's not about being able to 'get a lock', it's about it working at all. If you use GPS status, you will see that it can see satellites and attempt to get your position.. but I reckon what it thinks are sat's are actually the cell towers (When you haven't enabled GPS at boot time).
It's my only gripe with the HTC One.... When the phone's connected to my router, it flies!!
But... if I put the screen off and put it in my pocket for a while, then get it back out to do something else requiring net access...WiFi's switched off (and yes, it IS set to 'always on' in the WiFi sleep policy btw...) and I have to wait until it re-connects to the router again (which seems to take ages if you're waiting...)
I've been doing some Googling on this and it's quite common with HTC phones apparently....not everyone has it obviously, but I've found no real helpful cure yet if you DO have the problem.
I was thinking of rooting and installing a custom ROM to see if they're any better for me, but the last I knew, if you're rooted, you can't get Sky Go, and it's something I use a LOT, so that's put the blocks on that idea
Any suggestions?
There is two options. One in the power saver and one in the power menu in settings that disable data when the screen is off including wifi. Turn those off.

I hope this helps when I'm at work. I work at a hospital and having my connection to WiFi helps when I walk through areas with no singal I can then switch to WiFi calling. My phone unlike my galaxy s3 always disconnects from the secure guest services. My sgs3 hardly ever did that unless I didn't use it all night. I have to constantly re sign in every time my phone is taken out of my pocket.

Nope. Unticking BOTH options hasn't made a difference. Still having to wait for the phone to re-establish itself with the router after periods of inactivity....
I'm having this issue too has anyone found a permanent solution to the problem?

I've found after updating OTA to 4.2.2 today, the problem now seems to have gone....hopefully (might just've been lucky so far...dunno really yet!)
Have you updated too yet?

I am still on 4.1.2 and I'm in the US so we don't have the update yet.
This was one of the first things I noticed after connecting my HTC One (Sprint US) to my home Wi-Fi. It would hold the signal for a bit, maybe a few minutes, and then it would either simply no longer transmit data or the Wi-Fi itself would turn off and back on, with the subsequent connection never establishing a usable data link. Oddly enough, I got my wife an HTC One at the same time (subsidized upgrade for contract renewal), and hers appeared to be working fine, so I was concerned that I had a faulty device. Also, our previous devices (Moto Photons...) worked fine with the Wi-Fi at home as well.
After trying a myriad of settings changes, I found that only one thing worked reliably well: toggling the Wi-Fi off and then back on always resulted in a successful re-establishing of good data throughput to the router and back to the device. I decided to try and see how it performed on other Wi-Fi networks.
I took the device to my place of employment and without fail, the device stayed connected to the Wi-Fi there for the entire 8-10 hours, which only seemed to confirm that there was an issue with my home connectivity with my device only. As annoying as it may be, I am reduced to toggling the Wi-Fi off and back on when I use the phone at home, and I will remain optimistic that this 4.2.2 update fixes my problem, and if not, then I've done enough tinkering with the router at home as well as the phone to be satisfied I tried everything within my power to remedy the situation.
