I wanted to have my mobile with the default local Indian language. I want it to be Tamil.
The real problem is that i can't open Tamil web sites. Only boxes are shown. I tried Opera mobile. Even that doesn't have a feature for Tamil font. I want my mobile to be in Tamil completely.
Also, my mobile is unrooted (s-on) and I'm running stock Android 2.3.5.
Suggest me a good way

Check my thread in my signature. If you have rooted your phone, It's the best option....
For Tamil to display in menus, main screens home screen & app dtawer, translation is needed, which ithink, is not available, as yet, so you are forced to accept English interface. However, SMS text, emails and browser text can be displayed if you can replace the droidsansfallback.ttf font file in your /system/font/ directory with the font file akshar.ttf from my thread. But you need to root your phone first.....

thanks ragapa. But, i don't want to root my phone. Is there any other suggestion. I know this is stupid, but anyway, i don't want to root until my warrantee expires.

As HTC don't support that language, there is no way without rooting your phone

Hi, I installed this in JB by manually copying and renaming the file. I'm able to view Tamil perfectly in Chrome and Dolphin browsers. But I get only blank spaces in twitter. Any clue on whats happening?

Hello,
Since my Galaxy S is coming very soon, I was wondering if anyone here has successfully added Hebrew/Arabic language so that we can see it in the browser and in SMS.
Any tutorial?
Thanks.
I did with Hebrew fonts and it is working fine. Delete the fonts under /system/fonts and copy the new fonts to that folder. I used root explorer to do this.

For me
I rooted my SGS then copy tahoma.ttf from windows to /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf and it read arabic but reversed and it should also read Hebrew
So Hebrew is ok.. no problem.
For Arabic, I read somewhere that its reversed and they are not attached to each other (like space is between each character).. is it right?! Whats the solution to this?
Where can I download those fonts?
there is a full Arabic rom with the phone in UAE this is the proof but with out market we trying to dump that rom or wait until the rom uploaded to

you can dump /system folder that what we need by writing this to adb shell or terminal in your phone (your phone should be rooted and busybox installed)
su
tar -cvf /sdcard/dump.tar /system
you will find dump.tar in you scard (size ~268MB) and you can compress it and upload it to Rapidshare or mediafire or what ever you like
I will make it installable through update.zip or Odin3
Thank you

Mumtaz Hani, Great work man, I am downloading it right now !
Can I use JFF CSC file rather than the JG1 with your ROM ?
Hani, the link for downloading the ROM seems to have an Issue!
Indeed amazing work Hani,
I was wondering if you mind sharing the font files only, and if it will work if I install only them without the whole ROM since I already use another one. Will there be problems?
Thanks.
I have JG1 with JFF CSC, I'm going to try to install the update.zip only and see if it works !
I just went to that forum and noticed that there is someone that already asked the same question and Hani told him that he have to use Hex Editor or else it wont work.
Any one knows something about Hex editing that can make a mini guide on how to do it?
Thanks.
Hani amazing
It maybe a good idea to post this in english in xda...what do you think
I rooted my device and i pushed the market but unfortunatly i cant see protected apps anyone able to?

Hello there,
It seems to me that I need to root my N1 2.2 in order to get RTL languages readable. My question is that is there a way to do that without rooting? If no is it possible to only do it without *flash* my ROM just root access? Yes = How
I am not asking for a specific language as I need the answer for 3 oh my friends who needs Farsi, Arabic and Hebrew ..... Any thing please
RTL
The answer is both yes and no.
If you don't want to root you phone, there is an app (I wrote it ) called persian browser that you can see persian/arabic sites on it but only on Android 2.2.
if you want/can root your phone, the first this I can suggest is to root it without voiding your warranty (without unlocking the bootloader) it is a little hard to do that but it is possible, after that you don't need to flash a new rom and by adding the update for RTL languages (A project at google code called arabic android) you can fix RTL problem and they are keyboards on the market that you can get and use at least for arabic and persian. but you still need some tweaks, for example for persian you need to replace system fonts because one of the letters are not showing up correctly.
So, if you don't have time for these, just get my app it is just a temporary solution until android 3.0 came out.
Thanks for the reply but I believe your app only work with Farsi not all RTL languages however I like the idea of root but not void warranty Can I do that?????
So basically I have to change the font only and everything will work fine.
As for the Arabic one in Google code, I have no idea about Arabic but my Arab friend told me he has to flash it with custom ROM and has to pay 7 bucks for activation or something is that right?
RTL
yes, you need to flash, but it is not a ROM its just an update to some libs, and I didn't see any activation fee, maybe its for keyboard app or something.
refer to this post for rooting without unlocking bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710842
and yes, my app is for persian/arabic, maybe other people can write the same fix for other langs.
To make Arabic and Hebrew readable (in anything but Gmail's headers), you don't need anything. They're already readable in 2.2. You need something only if you're looking for RTL direction (alignment to the right) in messages, Gmail etc.
AnySoftKeyboard will allow typing them.
By the way, wrong section. This thread doesn't belong in Development, but in Q&A.
Rooting
Well, wondering around, found this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736271
and easy easy way to root your phone without voiding warranty and without cutting battery or do any phony stuff. I love this openness of Android that let people do this amazing things.

Use the kindle app and convert your Vietnamese books to .mobi. It works for me.
Hi Guys,
ive started to translate MIUI to my own language norwegian,
i am using apktool to decode and compile the apk's
creating a new dic called values-no and place my own strings in there.
everything seems fine, i use root explorer to place my apk's in the system/app/ dic reboots my phone and absolutely nothing happends!
(I've even checked on settings -> system -> language & input settings.
i think i must be missing something crucial!
please help, i understand english well and have no problem with it really, but it would be cool to finnish it and make it happend.
I figured that my lang prefix must be wrong, stumbled upon it when i installed ubuntu yesterday.
Going to try 'nb-no' instead of 'no' tonight
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Nobody seems to care, but if someone should care for future referanse the name should be "values-nb"

No one may have responded, but don't take that as a sign that no one cares. Someone, somewhere, will eventually stumble upon this thread looking for an answer to something you already know. I always suggest to post a fix for a question you asked. It'll help someone out eventually.
hehe, yeah thats why i postet it too.
and a tips: if you are working on translating an apk, and your'e not sure wich prefix you should use on values-xx simply decode Vending.apk(Market)(or another apk you know to contain your language) go into \res\ and you will find a values-xx folder with your language.
Hi,
Manage to come across your post... Did you finally make it? I'm also translating miui for my phone, in my language, i tested translating the mms.apk. However i didn't seem to see the changes.
How do you add your language as a separate language in the settings menu? Cause what I'm doing is changing the /values which shows the changes, but what i really want to do is a separate /values-xx so that i can go back and forth to the default and my own language.
Hope you could help. Thanks in advance.
