How to ROOT Stock ICS - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Just got the Bell ICS 4.0.3 OTA and been trying to root for the last hour finally got it and want to share with others. None of the tricks available worked and i tried them all. They all installed superuser but could not update binaries.
I'm not going to bore you on unlocking boot loader etc. or how to get ICS. You can find that here and here.
Once you have ICS and have unlocked your bootloader use "HTC Vivid All-In-One Toolkit V2.1" to flash WCX's Recovery. One you have that boot into recovery and install "Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip", reboot and you now have root. Your might want to get SuperSU from the PlayStore which i think is a better root tool and goes with the ICS theme

Couldn't you just install a rooted rom and be rooted?

Yeah of course but if you want to stay with the stock rom (like me with bell for wifi tether) this procedure is better.

Yeah i'm to lazy to S-Off and find a ROM that works. I really just need CMW and root. I freeze all the bloat anyways so this is much better.
I don't think the Raider will see Jelly Bean and if/when maybe i will need to do the "wire trick" but for now stock rooted is fine.

[Q] Froyo 2.2.1 - Rooted Version?

Hi All,
Was just looking into the prospect of rooting and I came across a post that basically responded to a guy asking whether subsequent OTA/Official updates would revert the root. the response was:
this might well happen. To be sure that this won't happen, don't update, or wait for a rooted version of the update to be released

It's the bit in bold that's got me wondering. I have my Nexus running stock ROM but rooted (with locked bootloader). I have the problem with the WiFi which 2.2.1 claims to fix.....and I just wasting time thinking that this update might get released as a rooted version so I can just install and not worry about losing root?
Any help gratefully received.
Cheers
1. Already released as a rooted version (check the ROM section)
2. Really easy to root with rageagainsthtecage ...
Right I can ask you the question then......with the rageagainstthecage root method, is there anyway to install the update without flashing a new ROM...I'm ok with stock.
If you're rooted - install custom recovery and install pre-rooted ROM.
Or try to apply the stock update through stock recovery, if you have it.

Just install the OTA - it will unroot you.
then root with "rage"
check out modaco, he's got frg83 completely stock with root. just flash using custom recovery. I didnt do a wipe so everything stayed the same just updated to 2.2.1 and yes it seems the wifi issue was fixed.
Just get the stock rooted from geo411m's rom!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=559
The links here will also do it in 2 steps from custom recovery:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8419658&postcount=194
The geo411m link is a deodexed ROM and the one in the link above is not deodexed. Either way you get the fixes of the newer version.
Going forward, think of it this way with future updates:
If you apply the OTA, intending to lose root and then re-root, you always run the risk that all avenues of rooting (other than unlocking the bootloader) have been closed by the new ROM.
If you apply an update repacked for custom recovery, you don't have to worry whether the root exploit you used last time will still be valid.

Thanks for that - honestly not sure why I didn't think of it
Ahh found a flaw in my plan.....it seems that verification fails on my Vodafone Nexus One (UK). I'm guessing there isn't an upgrade path from Vodafone's Froyo update to this yet. Suppose I'll have to wait for Voda's 2.2.1

UnaAble to root Nexus One

im useing ota 2.3.4 and ive tried everything to root the nexus one universal,z4,gingerbreak i have the bootloader unlocked but it will not root however gingerbreak did install su i thought my G2X was a trip this thing is giveing me more grey hair somew one have a solution
I had this problem and just managed to figure it out today (through the power of google). Superboot, oneclick and gingerbreak all don't work for 2.3.4 as of right now, so you have to use the PASSIMG method to flash an older version and root from there.
I found a good guide, but given that I've been a lurker for the past couple years as opposed to a regular poster, I can't link it. In lieu of a link, I suggest a search query such as "root 2.3.4 nd1razor"
Your bootloader is unlocked. No need for all that crap. Put the su zip on your sd card. Flash custom recovery via fastboot. Boot directly into the new recovery. And flash the su.zip from the recovery. You're rooted. The end.
you just need to flash custom recovery via fast boot or rom manager.then you can flash custom roms (which mostly have root along with tweaks) via recovery

I also unlocked the bootloader!
I put this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084726
But I still do not have root permissions ... Why?
You have them, but probably don't know how to use them. How do you check for them?
How did you put the ROM? Did you flash custom recovery?
Yes, i flash recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img
Now my rom is: MIUI-1.9.16
The strange thing is that I managed to install the rom and recovery without having root permissions
Not strange. You don't need root. You have unlocked bootloader......

Thanks, you're very kind!
How do for get root permissions ?
The ROM includes them. When you're inside the ROM, you have root.
You are right !!!!! I just had to change the parameters with superuser
thanks
P.S.: Sorry for my ignorance

[Q] OTA updates and root

So,
My HTC Incredible S is rooted, and the bootloader is unlocked (what the point of unlocking the bootloader is I still don't know as I can't install custom ROMS... but back to the point at hand...), and the OTA update to 2.3.5 arrived 2 weeks ago.
Needless to say, the update would not install. Despite researching the issue, I'm still confused as to what exactly is preventing the update from working. Is the the fact that my device is rooted? Or is it the unlocked bootloader? I tried relocking the bootloader and that had no effect, so I'm assuming rooted devices for some reason are rejected by the update.
So considering I can't install custom ROMs (I'm HBOOT 1.16 and the downgrade guide didn't work for me, so no s-off), and I now can't upgrade officially, I'm feeling a little stuck.
Is there a way to force an official update to install on a phone in my 'condition'?
Note: My recovery is custom - Revolutionary CWM - and I can't find (and therefore cannot flash) an original recovery image... would this affect the updating process?
Thanks guys/gals,
G
Root won't stop an ota but an unlocked bootloader will. You can check in your boot screen if its still unlocked or if its relocked.

You need to replace CWM with the standard HTC recovery (you simply need to extract the recovery.img file from a RUU/ROM.zip file) and then relock the bootloader before the OTA will install correctly.
At hboot 1.16 and rooted all you should have to do is install Cwm and than you can flash custom ROM's..... Not sure what your problem is.

@itsbeertimenow - yeah, unlocking the bootloader never did anything for me in terms of being able to flash custom ROMs... I guess 's-off' is required
@tpbklake, nonverbose
Yeah, I had a feeling the custom recovery had something to do with it. As I mentioned before, even relocking the bootloader had no effect.
Does the recovery have to be a specific version? I'm running Android 2.3.3, so will any 2.3.3 recovery work or does it have to be a recovery for an HTC Incredible S running Android 2.3.3 - that's a little harder to find. Any suggestions for an ruu/zip file to extract a recovery img from?
Thanks again for the helpful responses.

Instead of trying to install the OTA update for Sense 3/2.3.5 why don't you flash the stock, rooted version of 2.3.5/Sense 3 ROM that I posted in the Dev section. With the unlocked bootloader and CWM you can flash this ROM and then manually flash the boot.img in that ROM's zip file and you should be good to go.
@tpbklake
I think I'd already tried that and the update process aborted pretty early on. I'll give it another go and check out troubleshooting threads related to the process. thanks again.

Update: I'm following the instructions as per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105

Here is the 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 stock, rooted ROM built directly from the OTA you were trying to install. You would flash it in CWM just like you did for CM7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430535
Thanks for the link, will come in handy when I want to go back to a 'stock' setup... wasn't very impressed with CM7 so I then tried the Virtuous Affinity ROM (2.3.5/S3.5) - fantastic. Thanks again for your help!

I can't obtain root on vivid?

I have unlocked the bootloader and flashed the CWM with the All-in-one-tool-kit. I am on stock and I want to remain on stock but I want to have root access so I can just get rid of all the bloat. I have gone through the all in one tool kit and ran the perm root and still nothing. Also went into CWM and went to developer and chose install su and superuser and still no luck.
What am I doing wrong exactly?
Have you posted in the all in one thread?
I rooted mine with WCX recovery didn't have any problems very easy to do....

Hey Why do you want to remain on STOCK???
If you would like to go full fledge on your phone with custom ROMS, OC , ROOT. Look for my thread here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1676977
You will not regret!!!!!! Because I did the same, I have root access, my phone is OC and a sexy DarkRaider customer ROM with Beats enabled, Swype to unlock and many more features!!!!!
Check it out, this might help you!!!!!
Make sure you have the HTC drivers installed, and HTC sync uninstalled.
You shouldn't have any issues, just make sure to follow every excruciating fine detail to the letter.
I ended up following the instructions here and got root. Running stock OTA Bell ICS with unlocked bootloader and root. Still S-ON.

I know about that method. Just haven't had the need to S-OFF yet. I'm going to be travelling later this summer so I'll just let the dust settle with the ICS update first and then deal with S-OFF so I can use another provider's SIM.

Hey, S OFF is just needed to make sure that if you install custom ROM so that the kernels get flashed properly, it is not gonna affect anything else.
I have my Vivid fully Sim unlocked, rooted, S OFF and with Dark Raider Rom with Kozmick kernel OC at 1.4ghz with Swype to wake and its awesome!!
Just posted, felt like all who has vivid needs to get the full fledge of it!!!!!
gotta fix root on it. For now, download SU from here\

put it on your external sd card. flash it in recovery.

how to root with stock ICS

I know there are stickies but I am still unsure of where to start.
My phone is stock ICS + Sense 3.6
I want to root it so I can install root only apps. Further down the road I want to install CM9 or another rom.
I rooted my Desire with unrewoked last year, which was really easy, but for the Incredible I can't figure out where to start.
I am not sure if the stickies apply to ICS as well?
Help please

You are in uncharted waters my friend. ICS/Sense 3.6 introduced a new HBOOT 2.02.0002. Your only hope is that the Downgrade script that uses 'tacoroot' exploit stills works. Here is the link if you want to give it a shot and then report back on your success or failure.

The way I rooted mine was firstly unlock the bootloader via HTCdev, then flashed 4ext recovery via fastboot. I was then able to flash Superuser via recovery and finally installed Busybox from the market

Thanks for this post. I forgot that this was an option because so many people dismiss this option because they don't want HTC knowing that they unlocked their phone.
