ICSSGS IS BACK! How do I update? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yeah, they're now team nyx. Apparently I can just like flash a from without clearing cache or formatting system or anything. Will this method clear everything on my phone? I'm really curious and don't want to lose anything. Thanks.

Just do a wipe cache and wipe dalvik and then install the rom, you won't lose anything.
Also, on safer side to nadroid backup first.

Pay attention because many people have bootloops. I think we'd have to wait for a new update..

Follow the THREAD there you will find all your answers from people who are flashing the ROM.
FYI every flash of a new ROM has a risk of loosing all data. That is why the DEV's say BACKUP before flashing

On their site, it says if flashing from ANY ROM, then you can just flash without cleaning or formatting anything. Have a look on their site. Team Nyx.

Is this kernel safe?

Okay, so it would appear that the kernel I am currently running (you can view it here) is affected by whatever bug it is that stock ICS kernels suffer with. But, what exactly is this problem and how does it effect me? So far, I've had no problems with ICS so what is the matter with it? What do I need to do?

Using this Kernel is NOT safe.

The stock ICS kernel has a code in it called MMC_Cap_Erase. It is bad with a faulty firmware (most Notes have 0x19, you can tell by downloading Chainfire's app called GotBrickBug). Do NOT wipe data/factory reset.
Also, you can flash franco or speedmod kernels if you are running stock ICS and be perfectly fine. But, I wouldn't do it in PC Odin like someone suggested. You can flash either kernel in CWM, just do not wipe. You don't have to wipe anything.
After you flash it, reboot the phone, go to settings and then About Phone and make sure the "Kernel" is Franco or speedmod, whichever you go with. After that, you can wipe data safely.

What do you mean wipe data safely? Like removing apps or just factory resetting the phone? Is this risk also a guaranteed, as flashing firmware seems pretty risky to me also.

You wipe data if you switch ROMs. Like if you went from stock ICS to CM9, you would wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache. You need to do more reading before you start doing this kind of stuff though. I don't want to see you brick your phone.
I never said anything about flashing firmwares. You can't do that. There's no guarantee you will brick your phone if you wipe on stock ICS kernel. But, I wouldn't suggest trying it.

If you mess with big files or delete a lot of files at once, it COULD but there's no guarantees. I would seriously look at Speedmod or Franco kernels and flash one of them in CWM just to be safe.
Edit:
I never asked, but are you rooted?

Stay where you are then. It probably would be covered if you bricked and not rooted. Don't do a wipe/factory reset in recovery OR settings/factory reset.

You SHOULD be okay. I can not say 100% sure though.
We don't know. There supposedly is a fix (from Google), but they have to have permission to release it from Samsung. Read the threads about it in the General section. Entropy is one of the guys working on fixes and working with Samsung.

So, all going to plan, Google should release a fix with Samsung's permission sometime soon and that will solve the problem for me so long as I don't reset or wipe data on my phone and brick it by that point?

No guarantees. More than likely the "fix" would be passed to Samsung for them to release IF they do. There are plenty of "safe" kernels now that have disabled the code to keep you from bricking (Franco, Speedmod, CM9 to name a few). So if you are that worried, read about them and choose something. But, don't choose CM9 kernel unless you are on a cm9 rom, obviously.
Please, your best thing is to READ, READ, READ.

Cant restore please help!

Please if someone can take the time to help me save a lot of time.
So I had to restore my Nexus 6 back to stock from CM12 to unlock the phone so I could start using Project Fi. So I went back set it up and was ready to restore back to cm12. Well every time I try to go back to one of my updates it runs for maybe a min and then the phone restarts and then just stays on start up screen without starting up.
this has nothing to do with the unlocking of the phone because 2 months ago when I needed to restore from cm12 it did the same thing!
So why cant I restore using twarp on my device and what do I have to do to get back my restore.
also when I try to just reload cm12 it fails .
PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE! LOL
CM is your first problem. LOL All that aside. Usually when it stops on startup screen the kernel is borked. Try fastbooting/flashing a compatible kernel.
Try wipe cache and dalvik from recovery. If it still doesn't boot, wipe data, then restore apps using titanium
Can you guys please look at clip I made of the issue. Thanks so much!

To start I would actually wipe. Dalvik and cache is not a wipe. This only affects apps saved in ram.. Wipe system. Your flashing over old system and data. It is different flashing images than it is flashing restores. Can have files that are not overwritten. Basically a full dirty flash. Can't go stock and then dirty flash rom over the top. Especially CM. Too much doesn't match. Your flashing different bases over the top of each other. This is why people need permission fixes. The UID's don't match between the different bases. Have never used fix permissions unless testing and then shows us need to fully wipe.

Backup may be bad. Wipe everything and flash a full image/rom. Stopping on the splash usually means corrupted kernel. Rom not booting. If get to boot animation it is rom related. Need to start fresh. Google saves your apps so it no big deal. Rather have clean working rom than worry about apps and resetup.

Just saying after years as a tester and thousands of builds. Was a big thing when they were porting roms to a different device. UIDs were broke all over the place. See the same thing if dirty flash different bases like Lolli over KitKat or a complete base change as an example ( L to M). Don't see mismatched UID's on updates made on same base.

[ROM][5.1.1] The Android Open Source Project by LuK1337

First of all sorry if by any chance I am opening a new thread in the wrong section. But as a new user iam not allowed to post in the original devs post. I flashed this rom and gapps and everything seems ok (this is my first time flashing a custom rom ). My issue is that with the stock rom rooted (5.0.2 xt1068) I had about 430-470mb of ram free at idle with no recent apps open and after flashing this rom iam having quite poor ram management about 280-300mb of free ram. Is that normal? Also already wiped dalvik cache and restart a couple of times. Thanks in advance.
PS. Also the GPS is not working as I just found.
edit: ( never mind the GPS i fixed it with the erase modenst1-2 in bootloader)

Another question is that I want to flash the latest update to this rom. What do I have to do? Reboot into recovery wipe cache/dalvik cache ,flash the updated rom and wipe cache/dalvik cache again? If yes do I have to flash su again? Gapps I suppose and everything else stays untouched.
If u want apps and other stuf just wipe cache and dalvik otherwise clean install means clean everything system data cache dalvik

I would try and flash without userdata first, but have your sdcard backed up because really a fresh install of a major OS is always best.
