If you need testing or help, just ask.
Remember defy´s has a soft unlock solution, made by a russian team. It just replaces two files on /system, but need a specific cm7 build to work.

Droid early version

how can i root this droid. it's an early edition of the droid it even says "confidential motorola restricted property: not for sale" and where the meid is located it says
"motorola
engineering use only
not for resale
cdma sholes hw p2p"
I've tried to root the phone but it didn't work.
Not sure if this will work for yours but have you tried the rooting instructions for 2.1 android
There's a section for tutorial in this forum for it. The first part of the flashing process which uses rsd lite to install the Droid 2.0.1 sbf file actually erases the current version of android installed with all other info except for the sdcard and installs the 2.0.1 version from a blank phone. And from that point you can root to what ever you want but like I said I don't know if its possible with you device and not sure if will harm it but it maybe worth a shot. Also yours is an engineering version of the device so it may already be rooted or other ways to flash Roms that aren't known of. You might be able to search the Motorola site for developer software or something like that because HTC has a section of their site for their developers to download stuff for them to use so Motorola might have a similar site. Both are worth a shot if possible. Good luck.

Try this its a link to root a Droid with a voles signed file and a tutorial to tell you how. I'm not sure your version of test-keys but by doing a little creative searching I think you should find something. I just typed root Motorola voles and the link I gave you came up. There should be more if this don't help.

I also found this. Its a Google site where some one has similar problem with your version of firm ware. It tells the person some how he ended up with an test build or engineering version of android and says Giro Verizon to have them reflash a consumer version of android. It also in howardforums
Your model is called voles because it is the name Google used for Motorola Droid. So damn yours must be a dinosaur. Lol. That being said though you Havering an engineering version of Droid from Google can't be impossible to do anything with but there also might not be any current rooting roms. Or anything anyone else would have to help you. Your probably going to have to search for some developer firmware or software you can use to work with the phone. Its not I'm possible to find but wont be easy. Sorry for bad news. Good luck.

Is you Bootloader unlocked? That was my main question... if so - that could really help some devs out. Hold down your Up arrow of your keyboard down while booting up.
Email me if unlocked please...
Looks like you've got a very interesting handset there. Take good care of it, 'cause you could unleash a whole world of things (how the "real" Droid made it's debut).
Maybe poke around with ADB and then find out the CPU and such? It could be a early version with a 700Mhz CPU, for example. As for the android installation, it looks like it's using Android 1.5 or even 1.6...
BTW, how'd you get it? eBay?
I bought it in a flea market for 100 bucks

So have you contacted AdamZ or checked if the bootloader is unlocked? Before you flash anything it would be REALLY helpful to know if it is...as people have said it could really help out the developers. Seems we've had other engineering samples floating around but people flashed them to stock...locking the bootloader.

hi, i was just like you but if you follow the steps EXACTLY to the tutorial on here then you will be fine. one thing though, you dont need to update your bootloader 90.73 or 90.94 if you have those and when you flash vulnerable recovery, the tutorial doesn't tell you that when the phone restarts from flashing the first time, you must hold UP on the keypad (or X for bootloader version 90.78) as i had that problem. finally use G.O.T's open recovery as its much better than the original one (apps2sd is good as milestone has hardly any memory for games and stuff. if you need any help, then contact me on here. Happy flashing
Thanks I have pmed you but it's just if I root this phone and the phonw bricks then I'm screwed. I can't just go buy a new one. Is there a way I can totaly avoid any chances of bricking or just un-bricking the phone if necessery?

I just got a Galaxy Tab WiFi myself, but I did my research *before* I bought it. No Gingerbread is available, that I know of. There are not many alternative ROMs for the WiFi only model.
What did you use in your rooting attempt? The only two ways I know are with a Windows app or with z4root, an Android app. I haven't tried either one, here is a link to z4root on this forum.

EDIT: from other answers here the Sprint GB 2.3.4 ROM stock or rooted sounds the way to go, so it looks like this should work for you as it did for me on my Verizon CDMA tab.
It's hard to say for sure, experimentation is part of the fun, but killing the tab isn't. I didn't find any definitive answers on flashing a Sprint CDMA ROM on to a Verizon CDMA Galaxy Tab (for example), so I decided to try for myself:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255339
I suspect doing a FULL ROM flash would be a *very* bad idea (it seems doing that with a GSM ROM on other (non-GSM) tabs KILLS it). However, the technique I used was only to apply the kernel and filesystems, so I would *think* if you had a backup from before (always best to have a backup anyway, right?) you could always revert. You may want to look around and check to see if stock WIFI images are out there (I don't know for sure) but the Voodoo or CwM (ClockworkMod) recovery backups should be fine either way.
Then if you apply the filesystem and kernel files from 2.3.4 and they don't work you should be able to revert (I would assume, I can certainly flash back and forth on mine). I would *think* the kernel supports vanilla hardware + CDMA additionally (i.e. you don't need it, but it doesn't hurt), but may be fine.
But again, unless you're prepared to take the risk, I cannot say for sure, you can wait and see if anyone else chimes in, but that's my take.

You can save a flashable ROM in the sdcard. Then if the tab got bricked, you can insert the sdcard in and reflash again. But i don't recommend doing this because me myself never flashed my tab, only my nexus one.

I've heard the equivalent experience with the Droid Razr fastboot restore file used around here and other fora as support for the idea that the D4 restore should be leaking soon. What I've never heard was how long it took from release of the phone to a leaked usable restore. I'm deferring taking my bricked Droid 4 back to the store and playing dumb to try to get a warranty exchange in hopes I can just unbrick my phone sometime in the coming days or maybe weeks.

I'll in the same boat. I soft-bricked my D4 earlier this week and I feel like trying to swap it would be wrong. I messed it up, so I should fix it. I just have to play the waiting game.

I did a little google-fu and calendar math and came up with an answer to my earlier question about how long it took for the Droid Razr to have a leaked fastboot file.
That phone was released on 11 November 2011. Its fastboot recovery appeared here on 29 December the same year. That's 48 days.
48 days after the release of the Droid 4 (February 10th) was March 29th. That was 11 days ago.
So, the example of the Droid Razr leaked fastboot is interesting, but not necessarily insightful. It's already taken longer than it did for the Razr.
Sigh.
Here's a scarier thought. The Droid Bionic was released in September, and fastboot files didn't leak until February. Hopefully it won't take much longer! I'm very close to just using my spare upgrade to get a RAZR MAXX, or maybe the Droid Fighter that is supposed to come out soon.
Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
Not true, we had Bionic fastboot files for the stock release within a couple weeks.
This is actually very unusual that we have not seen them yet for this phone.
Ah, my bad. I should have looked into that further. The article I read about it made it seem like the ones that leaked in February were the first.

Download the update (do a Google search for the link) and put it on your SD card. Boot into recovery and apply the update. It will tell you where it's failing. You'll probably need to get a stock system dump and copy over any files that are missing/altered, making sure to change the permissions and owner if necessary.

Thanks...I would have done this but I don't have an external SD and for some reason the update won't apply if it's from internal storage.
EDIT: Got it working! Turns out my system/build.prop file was the culprit. I replaced it with a stock build.prop file, fixed the permissions, and then the update succeeded.

I will, later today. When I checked the link earlier, it was a 404 at the download site, but I have the page bookmarked at The Eternity Project and will give it a swing this evening (US Central time). My D4 is about as bootlooped as it gets, so I think I'm a prime candidate for this.

[JB] A hope to revert to ICS and get root!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2084935
Did anyone tried this?
Actually here is the hope:
When my JB on XT925 something went wrong, I was able to go back to ICS 4.0.4 with the utility 1.10.
However, it will install the Verizon version of 4.0.4 on your phone, so if you are with another provider, it will say that your SIM card does not mach the current network (Verizon).
But, it will let you update to JB of your choice & install the CWM-SuperSU-v0.99 (for root) on your XT925 .
So, as a the last resort reason, you can use it on XT925.

I bricked my phone :highfive: but only after I tried to flash the Verizon Motorola Droid RAZR HD VZW_XT926_4.0.4-7.7.1Q-144_VQW_S3-34-25_CFC files. I knew what was gonna happen. I was hoping for a miracle.

well, if you use it as a phone to make actual real voice calls, Motorola is just better than the others.
Some people are ok with the JB update but for myself with a lapdock, ICS was more suited for my needs; I would go back to ICS in a heartbeat.

well, if you use it as a phone to make actual real voice calls, Motorola is just better than the others.
Some people are ok with the JB update but for myself with a lapdock, ICS was more suited for my needs; I would go back to ICS in a heartbeat.

Trilogger, no luck?
I need the JB OTA AT&T Zip file from someone who is rooted and is in ICS and hasnt updated, ASAP, awaiting reply, i am trying to make a script to go back TO ICS from JB and i need a couple of files from the OTA zip.
The DROID RAZR HD XT926 CAN go back to ICS as the secure version did NOT increase in the Jellybean update.
On the Atrix HD, it has increased for the official Jellybean.
