[Q] 3g no longer working? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone. As you may guess from the topic title, I'm having a rather serious issue - my Captivate is no longer connecting to 3G or even to Edge - though it connects to Wi-Fi just fine.
It all started about a week ago, but has since progressed to a frustrating degree.
Basically, I was running Cognition 3.03, and everything was going fine - and then after hitting Flight Mode, I couldn't reactivate my data connections. I'd reboot the phone, and I'd be able to connect for about a minute or so after booting, and then Flight Mode would re-enable by itself; needless to say, it was very frustrating.
After looking around the Internet for some help, I eventually flashed what I presume is supposedly a stock rom - specifically I897UCKB1 - and thus we get to my current issue - no 3G access at all, no Edge, though I can still make and receive calls and send and receive text messages.
I guess it should be mentioned that I've had the phone about a year and a half (got it in November 2010, and therefore not up for a new phone until then), and generally put it to heavy use data-wise.
I had read somewhere that it might be an issue with my SIM card, but switching SIM cards with my dad did not solve the problem at all.
Could it be a problem with the modem or whatever that connects with the 3G network?
Thanks for your help (and for reading all of that!)

It does sound like you're having a modem issue. The easiest way to correct this would be to go to the Modems thread at the top of the Development section and find a modem that works with your ROM (KB1). Flash that from recovery and see if it fixes it.
If not, you may need to flash back to stock and re-flash Cognition.

Also, check your apn settings. There's an option to reset to default. Try that.

Sorry it took so long to reply - my home Internet access is... not good, so I have to go into the public library to do anything for the time being.
Anyway, my phone was being unruly and wouldn't let me do anything last night after I downloaded the modem that's supposed to work with my ROM - I couldn't even root it for whatever reason. I'm in the middle of downloading the supposedly official stock Gingerbread ROM (KK4) and I'm going to try from there later tonight.

Unfortunately I don't see anything about that. I go Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile Network, see Access Point Names, and it says it's empty and asks if I want to add an APN. I have no idea about what to do with that, so I'm not going to try right now.

once you Get to the screen asking if you want to add an apn, hit menu. One of the options should be reset to default. If you have no apn, that would explain why you have no 3g, etc.

Thanks for the quick reply.
When I go into Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks, it brings up a list of four items
-Use packet data (with the checkmark)
-Data roaming (with a checkmark, unchecked)
-Access Point Names
-Network Operators.
Clicking Access Point Names brings up a notification box APN Empty: Add an APN? Ok/Cancel. Hit OK, and it brings up a list of things for me to type in - hit menu and it only brings up Save and Discard. Hit Cancel, and it takes me back to the previously listed four items.
Clicking Network Operators shows Default Setup, but it's grayed out, and pressing the menu button does nothing.

Sorry for double post, but good news!
I flashed the 2.3.5 ROM I mentioned above, and it all works now!

[Q] Forgotten wireless network

Ok I'm a moron.
I accidentaly told my nook to forget a wireless network and now I can't get it back. I've looked all through settings and don't see anything that would allow me to reset this. I've tried scanning as well.
I'm running gingerbread the CM7 mod.
Sorry I tried searching but when you look for something like 'resetting' you get a lot of threads about resetting back to stock which is not what I want to do.
Is there a way to I don't know purge the wireless settings so it will search for networks that it has been told to forget?

When you tell it to forget it doesn't blacklist a Network, it just Removes it from your preferred Networks and forgets the Password. It should reapear on the list of Available networks if in Range.
If it won't show up even when standing next to it do this.
-Download Wifi Analyzer from Market.
-Open App Punch Menu and Tap View. Select AP List.
-Look for the Network and Tap it. It might prompt for a Plugin from Market. Just Download and continue.
-When Window pops up put in Password and hit Connect. TaDa it should now work.

Well I don't know if its a glitch in system or the mod itself but when I got home my nook wouldn't connect to my home network either. It kept saying I was out of range even when I was sitting in the room with the router.
So I ended up just reinstalling gingerbread. My instal was only a week old do no real biggie for me just annoying.
Ill just make sure not to ever forget a network again as it apparently Jones up my system
Thank you for the advice though.

Hey I have the same problem going on right now. My system wont connect to anything. The wifi status just keeps saying connecting and then will eventually turn off. I think I am going to use this as an excuse to try out Deeper-Blue's Honeycomb preview.

USA ATT Thrill Running Gingerbread with 4G (Success)

Hi there,
There has been a lot of discussion about how to get the USA ATT version of the P925 Thrill4g up and running fully with 4g enabled and working.
I have upgraded my LG Thrill 4G from stock froyo direct from the AT&T store to Android Version: 2.3.5 with Baseband: L620_MODEM_SIC_01.1042.00 showing Model Number: LG-P925g with Kernel Version 2.6.35.7 and Build Number GRJ90. I assure you, I am too stupid to make any of this up, so if you are interested in reading the easily enough accomplished, very descriptive method, read on.
After many a try due to the numerous blind alley posts and dead links, here are my findings:
Ingredients: Tip: Download and extract these BEFORE following the process:
The flashing tool that I found here
The flashing tool fixes 1 & 2 that I found here
The driver that I had to use (attched) named "LGAndroidDriver_Ver_1.0_All.exe".zip
The rom/kdz that I found here
The program to root the rom that I found here
The cleanup program to remove the unwanted programs from the new rom that I found here
Fine Print:
1. Back Up Everything - This will wipe your phone, which isn't that big of a deal if your most important data is in the cloud with Google.
2. I created NOTHING. I just failed until I found exactly what works and could perform the tasks with relative ease, precision, and get reliable and predictable results. All the links and downloads here....please follow those links and give those people some love.
3. Yada Yada I take no responsibility if you roger your phone but good. I can help you, but I assure you, there are many other people here who are more experienced who would be happy to do that for you.
4. This post is intentionally verbose so that everyone can participate in unscrewing themselves from AT&T, please feel free to comment on your findings with this process.
5. Unless explicitly otherwise specified, run all programs as administrator, and, if you can, in XP SP2 compatibility mode.
(Relatively easy method): Read ALL instructions completely before proceeding.
A. Install Small Server And Modify It
I went here and followed the instructions - they are basic:
1. Download http://smallsrv.com/ - the latest version will do nicely
2. Install and Run program as an administrator (right click on program)
3. Go to Settings (right click on the top menu bar of the program)
4. Go to HTTP Settings
5. Change Port to 9002
6. Extract the Content of the zip file named "www.zip" into C:\shttps\www
7. Edit C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host in notepad and add the following line:
127.0.0.1 csmg.lgmobile.com (click here for screenshots of all of this)
8. Save and close the file
B. Drivers, Parsers, and COM-Phone Connection
I followed the instructions here . Follow along!
1. Install Drivers (attached) and msxml.msi (found in the flashing tools you downloaded), then reboot your computer
2. Open Server Program, leave it running
3. Remove your phone battery
4. open your pc device manager (in control panel) and look at COM and PORT section
5. hold volume up button (only) and connect your mobile to pc through USB while pressing this button, and keep pressing until you see a new port has been added and installed in your COM and PORT section (about 15-20 sec), now you can release the button, be sure that port will stay apparent after releasing the button, or repeat this step (with longer press on volume up button)
6. At this point, you may/will need to point your COM/PORT (LGE MOBILE) to the newly install drivers (found at C:\Program Files\LG Electronics) so that the computer knows what device you just plugged in)
7. put your battery back and don't touch your phone again (edit: It took me a bit to get the COM/PORT to register, but when it does - LET GO OF THE VOLUME+ BUTTON. Alternatively you can, while holding the volume+ button, right click on the COM/PORT error you see and then start pointing the computer to the appropriate driver) Do not proceed until your computer recognizes the device. If you would like, you can map the PORT/COM to COM41 by clicking on ports, right click on the LGE USB, select properties, click on the tab port settings, click on advanced, change port to 41 and click ok
8. As an aside, you can also begin the flashing process below without completing the above steps by putting your device in debugging mode. That post is here but it did not work for me that way so I provided the instructions above for those of you who need a more certain method
C. Flash Phone
Open/unzip/extract the flashing tools to begin the flashing process with screenshots here
1. Install "B2CAppSetup.exe" and run LGMobile update - the ONLY error you should encounter is that LGMobile update can't find an internet connection. Good! The Server is working and LGMobile won't kill the update process.
2. Run as administrator "windows enabler.exe" and switch to the "ON" position( left click on icon in icon tray)
3. Your phone is already connected, so you need to Start "UpTestEX_mod2_marwin.exe", select and browse to your v20c KDZ file.
Set options emeregency, 3gQCT as pictured and press "NORMAL WEB UPGRADE TEST"
4. On the next screen, hit upgrade start
5. On the pop-up, hit clear registry, other country in the dropdown, and your language of choice (presumably english) and select ok.
6. The program will start the official LG Flasher - have a 5 minute coffee break.
D.Clean Up
Your phone is now flashed.
1. Hit exit on the LG Flasher and unplug your phone.
2. Press and hold the 3D button and the Volume- (down) button, and the power button until you feel a vibration
3. Once the wipe screen comes up, go ahead and clear out everything one at a time (the volume keys are up and down and the 3d key is enter)
4. After that, select the reboot phone option
5. Reinstall SIM card and External SD
6. Power phone on
7. Skip or exit all prompts
8. Set phone in debugging mode (settings/applications/development/debugging)
9. Connect phone to computer - device manager should still be open - make sure it picks up the COM/PORT - you don't have to hold down any buttons
E. Root phone
We're getting close - almost there!
1. You downloaded Megatron from here - open run.bat
2. It will root your phone for you (one of the easiest steps ever) by pressing enter.
3. The phone will restart many times. When run.bat is all finished, it will ask you to press enter to exit - do not remove phone due to the next step - just press enter and the window will go away
F. Clean Up
Clean up Rogers Bloat referenced from post here
1. In the Remove Roggers File folder, click run.bat and make your selections
2. I chose 1 and 3 and leave the APN alone
3. Then, press 4 to reboot your phone
4. Finally, disconnect phone from computer
G. Enable Data Connection
Set your APN to enable data connection (you should already see 4g, but you won't yet have data or MMS
1. On your phone, go to Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile Networks -> enable Data Enabled -> Access Point Names -> menu button -> New APN ->
2. Place these values in manually: excerpted from post here
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:[email protected]
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
Leave the rest of the fields blank
APN Type: leave blank
3. Save and Select APN
4. Reboot Phone
---At this point, you should be all finished with a working Gingerbread AT&T Thrill4G getting 4G on your phone, receiving MMS, etc. so go ahead and set up your google account and finish that pot of coffee.
I believe the last method for 4g works to get data enabled, but not at 4g speeds ( or at least their h+ speeds)
There's a method to update/replace the flex provider.HTML, I'm still not 100% clear on how to change that so i stuck to the method you laid out and have had no problems.
Besides, i keep my antenna on 2g mode only to save battery life, I'm on wifi at home and at work so i hardly have a need for their faux g.

Thank you! I had tried the modify flex.xml post and was met with force close errors. I experienced fauxG when I enabled flex as well. I know that it is different for everyone, so take this with a grain of salt, but my speeds were back to where they were out of the box when I followed this method. For me, that meant my speeds were doubled compared to when I used Flex.
As to the method to change flex.xml, I got a file explorer from the market specifically for rooted phones. Found the flex.xml file, edited the permissions and then edited the file per the post. Then I rebooted and lo and behold, it said 4g, but that was simply not the case in terms of the speeds I experienced.
The OP is a method for USA users that worked for me to get my full 4g working again. I also tested that with netspeed (i realize it is flawed, but that's what I use).

Ghosting is not a known issue on v20c. Can you specify?
A lot of people are experiencing ghost calls on v20c and I'm willing to bet that those who think they aren't don't realize when they do. I tried everything and still got ghost calls and missed texts. My wife would call my office and ask why I'm not answering my cell phone.
Oh yes. Durden - I remember your post. You are referencing, I believe

The majority of the complaints tend to center around using roms that were not in some way stock. This puts your phone out in stock Rogers, which I can't find any explicit issues with. I haven't put that in there because what you do with your phone after you flash is isn't covered in the post. I'm describing the method and providing the links, as stated in the OP.
The other type of complaint is from people using some form of 21. The posts I link to also have downgrade explanations. While there are several complaints, there are many happy folks. Here as well.
Interesting, thanks for the guide. I'll give this a try in a few days.
No problem. I posted this in general so everyone could take a look. I posted my findings in the OP - let us know yours so we can edit the guide for readability if need be.

I never rooted my phone or flashed anything but stock KDZs. No matter which one I tried I always got ghost calls. Most of the articles and public complaints come from others on stock GB especially since root for v20c has only been around for a week or so. This is a really good tutorial (albeit found a couple other places), it's what I did back when Rogers first released GB and I posted my own little tutorial. I honestly hope you guys don't miss any calls. I'm tempted to even try it again cause Froyo is slow as hell and freezes up on me a ton but at least I'm not missing any calls or texts. I would be very interested in hearing from all of you after several days. It seems like I went a couple weeks on Rogers GB before I realized how bad of an issue I was having.
BTW when you said "Hold Vol Down+3D+Power to get the recovery menu and wipe everything one by one" did you mean all of these?
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe cache partition and package recovery
clear nv dynamic partition
I have been running v20c for almost two weeks and can assure you I am not getting any ghosting. How do I know? I use youmail, and get e-mails when I miss calls and/or get voicemails. All the missed calls I see in youmail are also on my phone as missed calls-usually happening while I am asleep. Seems pretty solid. As for my APN, I only set mine up for data as I could care less about MMS. My APN setup is
Name-ATT HSDPA
APN-phone
The rest are left blank.
Speedtest.net app confirms my data speeds run comparable to my SGS2 Skyrocket speeds (to be fair, I live in an area with 3G, and no HSDPA or 4G LTE as of yet). So all in all, I am very pleased with the Rogers v20c on my AT&T LG Thrill. Lord knows AT&T is never going to get around to releasing an official GB for it. As far as official releases go, you are probably more likely to see ICS before GB. Although, both are probably just pipe dreams. Thank goodness for XDA devs.
I use youmail too. Sometimes the person calling me got my voicemail. Sometimes they got "the subscriber you are calling is unavailable"
Thanks for this writeup, I followed it to flash over the Rogers gingerbread from the European open one. The only thing I did different is use drivers from Adixtra's writeup for the KDZ, for some reason the ones you provided wouldn't recognize the phone correctly. All I can say is wow, I totally forgot how nice it is to have the 850 MHz band lol. I never get less than 3 bars now, while the European one I would barely get the 3G/4G signal most places and would be flaky even on the EDGE network. And just a note to all the people confused about the whole "4G" speeds thing on different basebands: The only thing different about the European baseband is that you lose the 850 MHz band. From my experience, it provided the same 3G/4G speeds whether I was on the North American baseband or the European one, the only difference was in the coverage. But losing the 850 MHz band sucks, that's the one that penetrates buildings better I think.

NP - that was a biggie for me too. I am glad you found a working driver. No one has really been able to isolate the ghosting issue, although it has been demonstrated that it is not a hardware issue. I would recommend using the driver provided to standardize the results of this writeup, though, for the others who are looking to give it a shot.

APN settings are neither saved nore displayed in list

I don't understand it. I cannot save a APN into the list. I enter my APN, MCC, MNC and give a name to the APN and save it. It won't appear in the list. I had this issue often. In former times I used ROM Manager and did "fix permissions script" but I cannot use ROM Manager anymore, because I have safestrap installed. So, is this is a file permissions issue? How can I fix that? I am not able to use 3G anymore :/ why the hell are the APNs not saved?
any help appreciated.
Hi. I had this problem.
On the stock rom, I had to disable and re-enable airplane mode for APNs to work.
If it still doesn't show up, add it manually to apns-conf, disable/enable airplane mode, then go to APN settings > menu key > reset to default. This will re-read the apns-conf.
If it doesn't work I suggest getting a new sim-card. The first 2 weeks I used my (couple of years) old sim card and the droid 3 couldn't read the MNC/MCC from the sim.. even though other phones could.
The airplanemode bug was also solved by using Mavrom, it's a great ROM either way

You're welcome. Note that the problem kept re-appearing for me every once in a while. When leaving WiFI area it wouldn't go back to 3G, and I had to switch airplanemode. Mavrom fixed it for me, but maybe you're lucky
Ok. As I didn't try any custom ROM I cannot tell you. I am running stock. Maybe you can tell me as you are already using Maverick ROM 3.0. Does BT AUDIO (listening through Bluetooth my mp3 through my Droid3) and camera/video work 100% with Droid3 ?

Using 4.0 btw .
I haven't tried BT audio, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Since there have several releases before 4.0 I assume someone would've noticed if it didn't.
Camera/video works 100%. The rom doesn't really kill any essential features.
Either way, if you install the rom with safestrap, your original rom will be backed up. It allows you to swap back to your stock rom with a click of a button. (and vice versa)
switch airplane mode - ok

Helped too, but I think it's mistake of (old) SIM card. But it does not work only in Motorola Droid 3, I have tried Samsun, and it was ok ... strange.
The slot with contacts in Droid 3 is not holding the SIM card fixed.
I found a solution for saving the APN:
This worked for me:
- Go to Dial Number and type *#*#4636#*#* for the hidden (info)menu in Android
- touch 'phone information'
- search for 'Set preferred network' or something like that (I'm from Belgium so my phone is in the Dutch language)
- change 'WCDMA preferred' to 'CDMA auto (prl)'
- you're good to go and you can save your APNs now (after changing, they worked without the need of manual editing)

[HELP] Wifi & Bluetooth gone, no longer functioning (Found BT AND Wifi MAC in CP!)
Just throwing this out there, I've actively used the hell out of my Thrill, and flashed it many times. However, the Bluetooth went out on AT&T's v20p, and Wifi went out after an OC'd crash. I was just wondering if there was some way to reset the chip itself as it seems the on/off for both do nothing, each stays permanently off now. I really want BT back, but I NEED Wifi back... Can somebody help?
I have flashed back to V20P in an effort to get both Wifi and BT working again, but still dead. I will sit on V20P for now, and hope things work eventually.
Trying to enable Wifi comes up with "Activity Wi-Fi settings (in application Settings) is not responding." leading me to believe that the hardware has to be fully reset.

I've tried V10K, V10D, V20A, V20P, V21D, and V21E, none of them restored the bluetooth (original issue), and so far V10K, V20P, and V21E have not restored the Wifi.
On V21E under settings, it's always showing as "Turning off..." under Wi-Fi. So it's definitely a hardware lockup. Is there anyway to do a full hardware reset on these things? I don't care about opening it, I'm not with AT&T anymore so the phone is mine, and frankly, I just want it to work.
I'm thinking of following some of the instructions for the lost IMEI, see if redoing the Communications Partition restores/fixes the BT and WiFi, I know stuff is getting corrupted when I crash while OC'd, and that's the only thing I haven't touched. I'll try it here tonight and see what I get. I still have both my WiFi and BT MAC addresses (WiFi stored in my router, BT in my computer when it was paired). So... I'll be trying that out soon as I get home today. Think it'll help?
So after fiddling around, I followed these steps from the reset your IMEI/SIM Unlock your phone thread, and started inspecting the CP payload that had to be flashed. I found a couple settings that I think people might find interesting:
1. Connect phone by USB
2. Activate USB debug mode
3. Enter 3845#*920# in dialer if that doesn’t work try 3845#*925#
4. Select Port Settings -> Select CP Image Download
5. A new device should appear at let it install
6. Open Tutty and select serial protocol. Click on open
7. Type AT if response is not OK, change port number (it is possible that when typing you don’t see any letters)
At this point, in order to check your Bluetooth MAC address, type AT%BTAD, this should display a string of 12 hex characters. IF you need to change your BT mac (such as putting it back in like I had to), use AT%BTAD=123456ABCDEF where "123456ABCDEF" is your Bluetooth MAC address (I had mine saved in my computer).
For Wireless MAC address: AT%MAC, same thing if you need to change it AT%MAC=123456ABCDEF. So far this has NOT restored my Wifi or Bluetooth, however it MAY help others who have suffered this loss. You will only need the Flash driver from that thread and tutty, so download the IMEI tool package, but don't worry about the CP unless you absolutely need it. Also, this is great to replace those MAC addresses once you flash (as they're likely wiped with the entire CP wipe).
I'm requesting some assistance with getting my Wifi and Bluetooth operational again if possible, maybe it's kernel modules, I'm not 100% sure, however, in the debug menu (3845#*<MDLNM>#) there is logging options for certain sections of the system. I'll be more than happy to provide logs if requested, I just want my Wifi and BT back and I feel like I'm onto something maybe. Here's to hoping!

What ROM are you currently on? Baseband as well.

Currently running V21E baseband & Prometheus ROM v1.5, I've managed to make the phone stable again, however still no Wifi or BT. Inside CP, AT%IMEI, %BTAD, and %MAC show correct, thanks for the assist.
If I was on AT&T, this lack of Wifi would be absolute murder, but thankfully, T-Mo's got 5GB of 4G so I can still use my phone, just not half the apps (like Netflix (it checks Wifi status and locks up), or XBMC remote).

I would say that you should try going back to FroYo and checking those addresses again.

I've gone back to FroYo without any change to Wifi or Bluetooth, but I'll go back to V10K and check the CP again.

Please Explain Tutty. I get into the hidden screen and tried the download and nothing was downloaded, this is my first smartphone and do no that there is no MAC address for the bluetooth device. it is the only thing not working. Thanks in advance for the help.

[Q] (Assistance Please!)Can't Establish A Reliable Connection to Server

Ok ladies and gentlemen I am in need of some assistance.
Today I received a previously used Galaxy Note 3 from someone on Swappa.
The device functions perfectly in just about every way and I love how zippy it is compared to the original Note that I just got out of.
The main problem I am encountering right now is the message telling me that the phone could not establish a connection to the server.
While I see that there are other forum posts that address this issue, I would rather talk to other Note 3 owners about this matter and what steps I should take to remedy it.
I've been reading that a root method may be the best way to go, I just need to be pointed in the right direction and instructed properly.
Hope to hear from you all very soon, cheers!

Try Another Data Connection
Attempt to connect to a different network and see if that clears up the problem. For example, if you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, try connecting to the mobile network instead and vice verse. Some users have reported fixing this problem by simply resetting their wireless router.
Check Date & Time
The date and time must be accurate for things to work. Wait for your wireless carrier to update the time automatically, or set it manually under “Settings” > “Date & time“.
Reset Google Apps
Sometimes, simply clearing Google Apps resets things just right.
Go to “Settings” > “Applications” > “Manage applications” > “Google Apps“, then tap the “Clear data” button.
Go to the Home screen.
Select “Settings” > “Data synchronization” > “Google“.
Enter your Google credentials.
if all above go not help try to re flash stock firmware .

I have tried all 3 of these methods and none of them have worked for me.
I am currently trying to root my device right now to see if that will help the issue.
Do you have any info regarding that process?

Here is info how to root and here is stock rom
I don't think rooting will help you, i will try to refresh with stock rom.
Ok I'll try it out and see if that remedies my issue.
I forgot to ask, is this method compatible with the Baseband N900AUCUCNC2?
