What's in your "bug out" kit? - Off-topic

Also known as a survival kit or 48 hour kit.
Even if an "undead apocalypse" never happens its still a good idea to be prepared for a disaster or war or even just a blackout. When the tornados hit here in Bama 500,000 people were without power for days to weeks. There was no gas, no food, and marshal law was declared: anybody caught out after dark could be arrested or detained.
Please, let's not turn this into a current events thread. Everybody should know by now about the stories in the news, no need to share them!
This is only a thread to post what you keep in your bug out kit, if you have one. Or suggestions of things. Keep in mind the idea is things you will need to survive for 48hrs and you will most likely have to carry it all in a backpack, so things like "a generator" are not helpful. I'll start..
Water (&/or water purification tablets)
MREs
Sharp knife(s)
Gun
Other weapons
Cash money
First aid kit
Bandanas (multiple uses)
Batteries (or a ZaggSparq or similar)
Bic lighter AND matches in water proof container

You gave me a great idea. I'm gonna put band-aids in my first aid kit now. Thanks.

I bought one of these for me, my wife and daughter
http://www.dailybread.com/index/emergency-supply/name/emergency-plus-kit
They have everything you could possibly need as far as survival besides protection and hunting supplies. I'm not trying to plug or endorse them, but it's the choice my family made, and if the fit hits the shan, I'm literally putting our lives in their hands.
Me - Reuger P-94 .40 caliber
Wife - S&W SW9VE 9MM
Child - Remington 870 Express Super Mag
Lots of ammo
Game cleaning kit
Wire for snare traps
Fishing line
Hooks
Duct tape
The important thing is not having the weapons and ammunition, but making sure everyone is proficient with all of them and that includes safety. My daughter is 14 and I dare say she is a better shot than me.

Does anyone like...

Beer as much as I do? .. What's everyones favorite beer? .. <yes I am bored>
Mine would have to be either Killians Irish Red or Sam Adams Octoberfest.
Ahh yes. Finally a worthy off-topic thread.
1. Newcastle
2. Pete's Strawberry Blonde
3. Arrogant Bastard (Stone Brewing Co.)
Hmm, I like almost every saxonian beer. And I won't leave my house without my beloved Hasseröder! Yay!
You know... as much as I love Killians and Sam Adams.. nothing beats a cold cup of cheap Beer Pong beer... lol.
Guinness
Newcastle Brown Ale
Boddingtons
Corona
Guiness just makes me wanna do Irish Car Bombs.. lol
I like marinating steaks in Guinness.. I'll tell ya, beer works with everything.
Hmmmm. Beer!!
Top one for me...
1) Speckled Hen
2) Newcastle Brown Ale
4) Boddingtons
3) Black Sheep.
Yorkshire pud with stout in the mix...well nice.
Also if you go for a beef in ale, black sheep riggwelter is the way forward people
Guinness, Black Beauty and Newcastle
Anyone tried 'kwak beer' ??
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwak
I stupidly fell for the myth that drinking it quickly from that weird glass makes a 'quacking' noise as the air rushes in......take note of the alchohol %.
Haun premium light. And that does NOT make me a *****! I just like the taste.
As for Kwak, I got pissed on it in Antwerp one night, and spent two days in bed. I now treat those Belgian beers with the respect they deserve.
I try and stick to Amstel.
Well not much of a beer drinker, but i do think i can hang with a couple of you guys. This is my drink of choice.

beer, redwine whiskey i'd drink it i'd like it
whiskey == most single malts really like bushmills from ireland though
beer == most kinds but mostly smaller not as mainstream lowest common denominator breweries
the rest of the flavours of alcohol i'd just drink
Worst beer of all time has to be this CRAP they are selling here in the states now, <not sure if its sold anywhere else> called Sparks .. damn alchoholic energy drink .. it taste like old beer mixed with redbull .. disgusting.
Maredsous
The only brew to make me gain 20 pounds for the first time in 20 years.
There must be enough calories in Maredsous to power a PDA.
I prefer #8 regularly, but drink #10 occasionally.
Other good choices:
1. Amber Bock
2. Corona
3. Boddi's Gold (when it was around - I must have drunk it all)
4. Caffrey's
5. Alka Seltzer
I don't drink as a rule, but I am partial to a sip of Mort Subite when I'm working in Brussels.
It looks and tastes like the waste products from a douche, but somehow it appeals to my non-alcoholic taste buds.
V
waste from a douche for some reason just made me throw up in my mouth.

Omg! THIS IS THE LAST STRAW!

How can you ridicule Brian Peppers day in and day out? The guy obviously has problems, and the last thing he needs is a bunch of immature teenagers making fun of him and "photochopping" his head onto different pictures attempting to make a big joke out of the man? Were you guys born perfect? Do you all realize how pathetic that really is?

Fellaz, LISTEN UP. It isn't the feeling you get that makes getting your ass licked worth it. It's the idea that a ho would degrade themselves into licking a hairy beast of an area ( atleast on me).I mean licking a hoez ass is one thing, slightly more groomed, and usually us guys demand a shower beforehand. However, I have routinely gotton hoez to lick my poop hole without even a wipe to clean out. I don't know about you, but I get stripes in my underwear on a daily, so it gives you an idea of what these hoez have to deal with. And man they do it with a damn smile on their face. That is why I like it, I make these hoez believe ( brainwash, traumatize, call it whatever) that this is their sole reason to exist.
I live in the American Gardens Building on W. 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Patrick Bateman. I'm 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Photos that tell amazing stories!!!

There is just something so unique and pure about photography. Every photo tells a story, some good, some bad. I got this from another forum but anyway here are some of their stories.

This is one of my favorite photos. The guy who took it won the Pulitzer Prize for it and shortly after committed suicide.
picture of bullet casings carpet a street in Monrovia (the capital of Liberia), at the heart of the battlefield between government and rebel soldiers

Ok, the first photo of the african child. He didn't commit suicide because of the photo, he committed suicide because of something with his friend dying. I dont remember. And I'm surprised you didn't post Burning Monk, Flag Raising at Iwo Jima, or the most popular photo of all, Afghan Girl.

OK, are you even gonna write something? Or post photos of stuff.

Biafra 1969
When the Igbos of eastern Nigeria declared themselves independent in 1967, Nigeria blockaded their fledgling country-Biafra. In three years of war, more than one million people died, mainly of hunger. In famine, children who lack protein often get the disease kwashiorkor, which causes their muscles to waste away and their bellies to protrude. War photographer Don McCullin drew attention to the tragedy. "I was devastated by the sight of 900 children living in one camp in utter squalor at the point of death," he said. "I lost all interest in photographing soldiers in action." The world community intervened to help Biafra, and learned key lessons about dealing with massive hunger exacerbated by war-a problem that still defies simple solutions.
Earthrise 1968
The late adventure photographer Galen Rowell called it ?the most influential environmental photograph ever taken.? Captured on Christmas Eve, 1968, near the end of one of the most tumultuous years the U.S. had ever known, the Earthrise photograph inspired contemplation of our fragile existence and our place in the cosmos. For years, Frank Borman and Bill Anders of the Apollo 8 mission each thought that he was the one who took the picture. An investigation of two rolls of film seemed to prove Borman had taken an earlier, black-and-white frame, and the iconic color photograph, which later graced a U.S. postage stamp and several book covers, was by Anders
On July 22, 1975, Stanley J. Forman took this infamous photograph while working for the Boston Herald. He climbed on the back of a fire truck as it raced towards a reported fire at Marlborough Street. Just as the crew had arrived at the scene, a young woman and small girl fell from an apartment above. The woman died instantly, but the young girl lived. This photo earned Forman a Pulitzer prize, and in addition, convinced Boston and several other cities to introduce more comprehensive fire safety laws.

Bought and broken - Your experience?

More and more products are built so that they fail early. Because the consumer-protection is weak, helps one thing: be vigilant.
The screen stays black? Battery no longer charges? The washing machine goes on strike? The handle breaks off?
It's a phenomenon: Electronical devices and commodities go preferably a few weeks break after the warranty. So much bad luck no one can have, some buyers like to think - and apparently right: researches assume that manufacturers install intentionally vulnerabilities in their products in order to increase their sales in the long term.
The math is simple - more broken equipment, more need for replenishment.

Agree with you. Really a widespread bad what Ihave heard. Personally no negative experiences so far.
Problem with your theory, if a product breaks so early, I will not be buying the replacement from the same manufacturer. So, in the end, I'll backfire. There is more profit in making durable, reliable products, then trying to pull sneaky moves like this.
Sent from the phalanges of my hand to the facet of your cranium.
The worst culprits are car manufacturers. After 8 to 10 years the gleaming pride and joy that somebody drove off the dealer's forecourt, is now a worthless piece of junk.
As soon as the warranty runs out, so does everything else. Reversing sensors pack up, switches develop flakey faults unless percussive maintenance is applied every few weeks. Sound familiar? Behind the clever lifestyle TV advert they have just sold you a piece of crap.
Have a browse through some of the owners forums, at least you'll know where to hit the switch!
No, the difference is the immense competition.
Companies are being pushed more and more into fast, cheap productions to keep up the war against the competition. As such, they end up manufacturing things in low-end countries, with cheap materials in a far moe limited timeframe.
Back in the day of our 'indestructable' Nokias, there was no Apple-Samsung-HTC worldwar going on. There weren't so many cars about. The demand on washing machines wasn't as high, and there were nowhere near this many brands.
Already forgot discussion about hidden "Sony timers" synonymously for precise timing of product failures, means a product break down just outside warranty.
Arrggghhhhh!!!!!! Washing machines!!!!!!
Don't get me started about washing machines!!!!!!!!!!!
When the spare part costs half that of a new machine, or you have to line the pockets of the anointed acolyte i.e. the official manufacturer approved repairer. He turns up to cast the runes, or consult the chicken entrails in order to find out what has actually failed. (Some manufacturers don't even publish what the controler error codes mean. No names, but I'm sure you have heard of them. In some cases he needs a PC and dongle just to get at the code. The code may say a £10 inlet valve or pressure switch has failed, but you have already paid the man for a call-out.)
It is easier and/or cheaper to throw the old one over a wall, and buy a new one.
The opening scenes of Wall-E are getting nearer by the minute.
I'm sorry, I'm going to have to go and have a lie down now. I'll be alright in a few minutes.........

Waterproof Case

I was wondering if anyone knew if any manufacturer was making quality waterproof cases like the Lifeproof or Seidio Obex line cases...
This is one thing I am always jealous of iPhone users.. the wealth of accessories available to them.
I usually go w/o a case, but when I go on a trip, hiking, beach, lake, etc.. I like to have some extra protection for when I take my phone out for some pics/videos..
Alas, it is always difficult to find a quality case in this respect.
I doubt it. No Nexus has never had one that I know of

Just kidding, I'm hoping too. I use my phone for rifle competition and at least a rain and dust proof case would be great. The ol' ziploc "case" gets old.

LOL! Well, you have to do what you have to do. I never thought about using ziploc bags. I will keep that in mind. As for a regular case, I won't be using one. I think the phone is grippy enough to not slip too much if it's like the N5

I've had a friend try using a ziplock bag and water got in and his phone stopped working, for what it's worth.

Noted. I may do the double ziplock bag method to be extra safe

Reviving this to see if anyone had found anything.
I do use the ziplocks for the beach and whatnot but that is really "splash proof"
What I would like is a diving case, something that is good to a few meters.
This is by far the best option out there IMO
Liquipel
Thanks but I was hoping for a case instead. It doesnt even have ot be hard like a fitted Otter, but if it were a small baggier or something I would want it to be truly waterproof and be able to trigger a camera shutter
What about something like this? My girlfriend use something similar when she went hiking around a river with some small waterfalls with some friends. She said it was great and kept out all the moisture. She was even able to take pictures with it because the bag allowed the touch screen to work.
I may pull the trigger and hope that the fingerprint scanner works through it (it does through a ziplock) because our buttons being on the side makes it really hard to wake the phone.
