Hi,
big unsavvy discaimer here, yet I managed to root my 2.3.6.Note a few months ago (CWM also installed) needing the root for a backlight notification app which I'm not using after all (I currently have NoLED which requires no root I think)
Having now installed Kies on my pc and hooked up the Note, I am offered an update to 4.0.4 which I'd like to do
1.Is that safe in spite of the rooting? mind you, I don't object to the loss of root that I understand is going with this update method.
just looking for the least time- and effort consuming way to upgrade now, I am sifting through a lot of the technical info here but the wealth of knowledge to digest before I can safely juggle roms seems a bit daunting right now.
2.Also, don't quite remember if I flashed my kernel too at the time of rooting (i was following a comprehensive how-to sheepishly), is there any way I can tell? (phone info attached)
3.Last question, will the kies update leave my apps and settings untouched?
thanks much!
d.
pls delete this second post sorry
Just download a 4.0.4 rom from sammobile if you like stock and flash it via pc Odin..
If you like custom roms go development section, download a rom then go cwm do all wipes and flash it
Do not use Kies to upgrade.. Several things could go wrong and you will end up with a brick..

thanks for your reply, just a few follow-ups below

no further precautions necessary? and will it install the ics over my current apps and settings? the root is no issue here?

ok I'll read up on the wipes, maybe that's for a later upgrade

No precautions needed while going from gb to ics via Odin.. You will lose root.. (never wipe/factory reset from stock ics kernel or you will end up with a brick
For the custom roms.. Just be sure you are in a safe kernel (speedmod /notecore) before wiping because as I said before.. You will end up with a brick if you wipe from stock ics kernel
You can wipe and flash any custom rom from gingerbread because gingerbread kernels are safe to do so.. As notecore and speedmod are

ok thanks.
to abuse your generous helping disposition further, how can I tell exactly which kernel I have installed? and is there any benefit to flashing speedmod before upgrading to ics via odin?
and does the odin upgrade to ics leave apps and settings intact?
again, thank you.

If you are on gingerbread the kernel version does not matter.. To check it just go settings>about>kernel version
Speedmod its an ics kernel.. So you gotta be on ics to be able to use it... But if you are rooted in gingerbread and you want a custom rom you can use cwm recovery and flash the custom rom straight... Custom roms includes safe kernels.. So you will be safe..
I really encourage you to stay away from stock ics kernel.. And yeah flashing ics via Odin on top of your gingerbread will keep your apps

getting closer, bear with me. I am desperately trying to find out what kernel I am currently running. I have opened another thread just for that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856345
then, all the info I need to act on your advice is- can I keep that very kernel and just flash ICS (i will go with your recommendation to select a custom one) via cvm recovery? i.e. from a rooted 2.3.6. SGN on N7000XXKK9-CL725676 #2 (readout from the settings page)
I am obstinate at following up, sorry, but thats because the instructions come pretty casually to the novice, yet the warnings on not ommitting crucial steps abound.

Yes you can flash any custom rom ics(or whatever) from your kernel.. The new rom will flash in the process its own kernel.. You have a rooted kernel wich might have cwm.. Download the desired rom to your sd, backup all your photos /videos/documents to your pc... I encourage you to do a fresh install of your apps to avoid further issues when restoring them..
Then press volume up+power+home buttons until you get to the n7000 screen then release to boot up to cwm, once there wipe data and cache then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache... Then go back install zip from sd card and flash the rom you downloaded and reboot... That's it

I have chosen RocketROM v10 - ICS - 4.0.4 - XXLRK for this update (more or less randomly, but it is getting good reviews). In the instructions, it is mentioned that coming from a rooted GB-rom, i should install
abyss kernel 4.2. first, then do a FULL wipe (does that include the dalvik thing too?)
I mention this because these are steps not explicitly included in your last instructions, just trying to connect the last dots. If you confirm that process, I am going ahead!;
muchas gracias!

Do not flash abyss go straight from your current kernel
Coming from gb flashing abyss its an extra an unnecessary step that might gets you into troubles
Tho I gotta ask you if you know
What cwm is and if you have checked that in fact your kernel has cwm

yes, it even shows up on my apps list
THAT much I do remember from my first venture into messing with the note!
thanks for worrying though;
btw I now hear the stock ics is even leaner and as configurable (with tb) as the rocket rom I downloaded
would the flashing process for the stock ics (DL from the samsung site?) be exactly the same as for custom roms?
thanks!

Nop.. It's not the same.. I'd say it's even easier but risky.. As if something goes wrong while flashing it you will end up with a brick..
If you do like stock feel less bloated with a decent performance and battery life.... Go for the cleanote rom.. HERE

ok I downloaded that one. Just to be sure, it says:
"Installation:
1.Install from any rooted ROM with a safe kernel (notecore, speedmod, franco, CF). Installation script will automatically wipe /Cache and Dalvik cache for you. You can format /Data as well if you want a completely clean stock rom install with full root and performance enhancements.
Install the usual way though CWM
OR
2.If you are on a stock rom, follow the following instructions
Flash stock ICS rom in PC odin
boot phone
reboot to download mode
flash Notecore kernel in PC odin
reboot phone
copy rom ZIP to sd card
reboot to CWM
perform a factory reset (format /data / cache)
install rom ZIP"
Do I fall under the first group (rooted rom with safe kernel)? because my rom itself is still stock
just making sure
thx

You are on gb that's a safe kernel so.. You fall in the first group and you can follow my instructions or those.

Before flashing the rom get the latest ics baseband (radios) here get the cwm flashable.. So first you flash the rom then before reboot flash the radio then reboot
If you already flashed the rom.. Download the radio to your sd, reboot to cwm then flash it.. No need to wipe anything for flashing the radio

From safe kernels wiping data its safe.. It will only delete your apps/system apps and it's data to avoid further issues with battery...
You can flash the radio after flashing the rom and before rebooting..
If you reboot into android without flashing the radio you gotta go back to cwm to do so.. Just the same way you flashed the rom but not wiping anything
Now go ahead and flash lol.. Want to see you happy with your note rocking ics already xD

ok ok just one LAST question;
instructions say the install routine performs the cache and dalvik wipes automatically.
that means I just do "install zip from sd card" right away, correct?
chronologically, where does the "wipe data/factory reset" which you recommend come in? before or after that?
it's coming, it's coming...;

Help please..my Note is stuck at the "Samsung" glowing word and can't finish booting
I have an international Note and I was still on the factory Gingerbread. After I chose to update my note since it states that it is available for wi-fi download in the setting, it would download the new firmware (I believe) and after it finished the installation, my note got stuck at the "Samsung" word and would not finish rebooting. Now I cannot use my Note at all.
Is there anyway to fix this?
Thanks.

hey, hope yr installaion didnt happen right way.
and please if you think you have downloaded installations and updated.
now u would be on stock ics rom. never ever wipe cache or data as this can triger "emmc brick bug" and hard brick yr phone.
what i would suggest is
1.go to sammobile and download latest available stock firmware for yr region.
2.get yr phone to download mode.
3.then using pc odin flash the rom.
this should get yr phone back to working.
---------- Post added at 08:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:12 AM ----------
or first what u could try is,
remove battery and insert and hold the power button for about 8 to 10 secs and then see yr luck

If he was doing an official upgrade i wont suggest him to do a factory reset in recovery as he may now be on a brick bug ics kernel. PC odin with an official rom from sammobile is the solution.
I would flash a safe kernel and then perform factory reset or at least clear cache. The update will certainly be ics 4.04 so you run the risk of a superbrick under ics stock ROM.

Since no body knows what state he is in.
And the OP also don't know what state it is in
I suggest to download a gingerbread rom and flash through odin.
If ur update not successful and u r still in gb, yes u can wipe.
But if it is successful and u r on ics with stock kernel, u will be in trouble if u wipe.
Just download a gingerbread rom, and flash through odin. Read dr. Ketan post first on how to do.
If ur phone run alrd, later on u can think of upgrade to latest ics.
Good luck!

I can second that. Go for a GB rom using pc odin.

I don't think this time Any place have a gingerbread update
Though just to confirm - Reboot to recovery
And select update zip from Ext Sd card
-If you need. To use Home button to select it - your recover is still GB, still safe side, flash stock GB kernel and wipe cache and data
-If you need to use power button to select
Recovery is ICS
Flash hydracore kernel and wipe cache and data
Just do recovery test as I said and if you have any query will write exact steps here.

1: flash a Philz kernel for ur rom and reboot into CWM and do a facotry reset.
OR

ppl will have their backup data in a nandroid backup.. so its very unlikely that someone will post it.. more over a stockrom backup is about 1 GB

Did you do the 3 wipes in recovery ?
If ODIN passed then all is good, it should be booting.
try the above method of going back to GB and then 3x wipes and watch it come alive
Then start the whole procedure again to get back to where you want to be :good:

Hi all,
I currently have CleaNote and Notecore 14.1.
But, I just upgraded to the Note 2, so I want to wipe everything on my Note 1 and reinstall the stock ROM to sell it.
Is the best way to do this the following:
1. Go into CWM and format cache, system, and data
2. Select reboot, then take out the battery when it fails to boot. (I don't think you can power off from within CWM...)
3. Put battery back in and reboot into download mode.
4. Flash stock ROM via PC Odin.
From what I understand, I can't do a wipe once I've flashed the stock ROM in case I get the emmc brick bug.
Thanks,
Rich
Personally I would flash a stock GB ROM with mobile Odin setting it to wipe... call it a day

Second that, when it comes to internal storage wiping, connect to pc in mass storage mode and manually delete all files within, don't rely on stock format sd card, it quite often leaves files in there.

I did :
1. Format usb storage.
2. Go CWM safe kernel nd wipe evrything.
3. Flash a stock Rom.
4. Connect to pc, and check all my files whether deleted or not.
Finish!
Just a good advice on a good deeds.
If u sell to user, help him/her to flash safe kernel. Take philz, easier to flash.
If u sell to Samsung, no need to flash safe kernel. They will redo ur phone again anyway.

Kernel is: linux version 3.0.15-CM-g8e3d42a
Rom i flashed: N7000XXLRI---4.0.4/12.07.17-N7000NEELP4---Download--- Nordic countries
I first went into cwm and did full wipe, then i used odin method like it said in that thread. I loaded the md5 file and put note in download mode. it said "Pass" and note rebooted.
I also now tried to flash the same rom in cwm (I put the .rar file in root of internal memory), i get an error right away says (bad) and failed. is it wrong rom?

I downloaded the hydracore kernel, but when I now try to go into cwm I get Android System Recovery, how can I flash the kernal without cwm and I cant start phone?
DO THIS - it will work. Download Philz kernel (it is safe to wipe from)...it is essentially a stock kernel with cwm and removes brick bug...
You can flash it from android stock recovery.
wipe data dalvic and cache... reboot you should be good..
If you want to remove root...install mobile Odin and ref lash your stock ROM with wipe and don't check root

NOTE- Im pretty sure flashing philz from Odin will give a yellow triangle...so flash from stock android recovery if you can. Otherwise you will have to use triangle away

I flashed philz safe kernel from stock android recovery. When I rebooteded it gets to the first samsung logo I see white lines on screen and it turns off. So cant do anything now.
Did u use the correct philz kernel for ur built number?

Not only what antique says (which is CRUCIAL).can you boot into recovery with power volume up home?
If none of this works you are going to need to download dr.ketan's prerooted GB ROM and flash that. With PC odin..because since its GB you can do a factory reset in stock recovery and there is no risk of bricking your phone... then use mobile Odin to flash LRI

No I just used the latest: PhilZ-cwm6 v3.65 with CWM 6.0.1.9 based recovery
On back of phone it says N7000GSMH
I can enter download mode, but not android recovery.
I have no idea what to do or what of the Philz kernal to use. :/

Is it the roms in STOCK ROMS THREAD saying "Older Gingerbread ROMs (Directly Rootable)
These all are stock ROMs and this can be flashed using PC odin without exclamation mark or raising flash counter"?
I am not sure about the triangle for those... can anyone else chime in on this please? Nokia spyder do u guys know?
If you want you can flash a stock kernel ICSand get recovery back..or ref lash LRI and then get the proper philz flashed through stock recovery...
I mean I have used triangle away many times without a problem...but definitely avoid the triangle if you can...

Phillz kernel won't raise counter, and yes if you need to go back to stock kernel you can just flash with pc Odin without raising counter.
