[Q] Trouble Downgrading Dream - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First I will explain what I have done. (I cannot post Links yet).
Following The CyanogenMod Wiki (HTC_Dream:_Rooting) I found out I could not downgrade to the RC7/RC29 (Spanish Phone). I was receiving the error message "Model ID incorrect! Update Fail!". After a bit of googling I was found that I should make a goldcard, this is where I start getting confused.
I created a goldcard following the instructions (First Google Result: goldcard on mac - mikesouthby) I was able to carryout every step without a problem. With the goldcard on my SD I Camera + Power booted the phone. After the same "Reading images.." bar completed and "Checksum Checking.." I got the error "Main Version is older! Update Fail!".
I have added some images which are just photos of the process, they show more information. This is my first Android device so yes, I'm a noob. On OS X by the way.
Information from device.
Model Number: HTC_Dream
Firmware Version: 1.1
Kernel version: 2.6.25-890662e5 [email protected] #12
Build Number: 1.56.621.4 PLAT-1.0_gms-141395 CL#19091 release-keys

the goldcard didint work, lots of people seem to have trouble getting the goldcard to work on a mac. if you have access to windows or linux try again. but i assume your purpose for downgrading is to gain root, there are other ways such as running an app. androot.apk never tried it but many have and say it works fine and there shouldnt be much of a chance for a brick. you would still have to flash new radio and spl and recovery

Thanks for getting back to me. I tried to use Androot but it seems to just crash when I hit root "The application Universal Androot (process com.corner23.android.universalandroot) has stopped unexpectedly". Though I didn't install it off my SD Card, but off a web server, as I can't find a working File Manager for 1.1.
Will try get hold of Windows or Linux, yeah I am trying to root the device to install FW 2.2.

I have used androot for my phone too on 1.6, no probs at all! Just ask a friend to lend their windows and try again to UPGRADE it to 1.6 and it would work.

I've gotten hold of a windows laptop, what should I do to upgrade to 1.6 though?
Sorry for the basic questions, first shot at all this business.

you can try to put an ota update on your phone and name it dreaming.nbh , boot into hboot.
but you may be best off just downgrading to 1.0 and following the old way for rooting then reupgrading

WAIT!!! I have just found a file manager for 1.1 : OI File Manager! Just go to the super old android market and try to get it or download it form the internet browser on your phone!

root for FRG22D

Hey guys,
Trying to help a buddy at work unlock his driod1 - he updated to FFRG22D - now any of the single click root methods do not work..
My phone is a nexus1 and did not have these issues: As I am not a Droid owner / user I am hoping people in the forums here help to get him rooted.
I would like to get him on to ClockWork - so we can flash CM6 on his droid.
Can someone point me to a good guide to rooting this?
Cheers,
hey if he is OTA FRG22D can you please post his build.prop file for me to take a look at, it can be found under /system on phone memory, i am working out a market fix for rooted frg01b users like my self, i wont update until after frg22d is rooted for real but i can spoof the version and fingerprint if i have that file contents
i found what i was looking for after a while, thanks.

Have you had any luck? My buddy had his phone replaced and the new one has this update, but he would like me to root it again for him.
can you not just download the old froyo, put it in the sd as update.zip, flash that then root?
FRG22D hotspot app
I have the OTA FRG22D stock unrooted. In-order to root it, I used the following procedure, from droidforums:
"Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version". After installing the custom recovery:
"MC1_A855_1282081087_Recovery-Only_SPRecovery_0.99.3b.sbf", I was then successful installing a wifi hotspot app

The one click root apps do not work with FRG22D. The exploit those apps used was patched with this release.
The FRG01B & FRG22B stock/odex/deodex only work for devices that are already rooted. Meaning that if you do manage to imstall them you will not have root.
You need to do a *sbf* back to 2.1 or2.01.

Super easy I actually downloaded using my D1 transfered file from my phone to Linux laptop and changed the Windows commands to Linux commands and it worked and then I went in to market and flashed Clockwork!!!! Oh and yes I'm on FRG22D the phone came as a replacement for my Eris and it already had this build on it... PM me if you have any questions...

It doesn't.
The method that RodNoc_eR just mentioned above just worked for me. Here's the link again: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/74028-root-droid-1-regardless-os-version.html
for those of you who are doing this the complicated way, THERE IS a ONE-CLICK METHOD, since I cant post links, Google SuperOneClick, download and find instructions, its pretty much as easy as downloading the .zip, extracting it to where ever you want, right click on SuperOneClick application and Run as Administrator, make sure USB debugging is checked, DO NOT mount as USB storage device, click root button on the program, let it do its thing, and wa-la!
You have acheived root! Be sure to download the Custom Recovery of your choice, which is as easy as DLing Rom Manager from the Market and flashing ClockworkMod, I just did this and am now happy I spent time searching and not typing commands into the SDK, super easy and it works for the DROID 1 FRG22d, I just did it.
Enjoy!

[Q] updated HTC hero software OTA and locked up root. help?

updated my HTC hero on sprint to the most recent OTA software update. not firmware, software. it was rooted before but I forgot to unroot before updating. root permissions are now completely jammed/locked up. tried to unroot, no good. tried to re-root, no good. I'm in a state of mid-rootedness. please help. I'm gonna go crazy trying to figure this out myself.

That works on the newest hero rom.
I don't know how to run all that stuff. how do you fix it without installing an extra ****-ton of software?
This is why you should read about rooting before you actually root the phone. Run the RUU like suggested, that is the only way you're going to be able to downgrade and root your phone.
Please post in the Q&A section next time when you have a question like this.
Run this:

Gingerbread network connectivity issue

Hi guys, I'm new to Android, swaped my 3Gs for a N1, I manually updated the phone to FW 2.3.3 (GRI40), the phone is stock, no root, no custom firmware.
The phone randomly loses network connectivity, (no network available message on display) I can't connect using 3G but I can with Wi-Fi, can't make phone calls, only way to fix this is to reboot the phone or switch airplane mode on/off.
I have radio version 5.08.00.04, kernel 2.6.35.7-59423-g08607d4.
I like this phone and don't want to swap it for an iPhone 4, but this issue is starting to get on my nerves, please let me know if there is a fix for this.

Ok, I tried everything and nothing seems to work, I reverted back to FRG33, but I can't root the device, everything fails, I can't go back to EPE76 or something else, I get the old version error.
I can't update to 2.2.1 or anything higher than that (including moded GRI40 versions) because I get the signature error.
Basically I can only install FRG33 or GRI40 (stock FW), the phone works fine on FRG33 but I would like to be able to install 2.2.2 (FRG83G i think), cause the 2.3.3 is just crap, reminds me of some older iPhone firmwares.
So, what should I do, cause i'm out of ideeas, please keep in mind that this is my first android phone when you explain something.
Thanks.
You can either root, or flash the updates one at a time:
FRG33> FRG83> FRG83D> FRG83G> GRI40...

I checked the archives, everithing is fine, I done a factory reset and tried again with the same result.
I am on FRG33 now (I flashed the rom using passimg.zip copied on the SD), trying to update to FRG83, I got the ROM's from here. I receive this error:
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
This sh**t is driving me mad.

Have you turned signature verification off?

I bought this phone from a guy, and I don't know exactly what he has done with it before but when I go into bootloader (trackball+power) I get a line that says unlocked, I don't know exactly what it means, it's like the one in the attachment.
It means your bootloader is unlocked. Basically, you now have the ability to install images to the phone through fastboot on the PC.

After a few hours of reading and rom download I managed to update 2.2 to 2.2.1 using this rom "766a101ae02c.signed-passion-ota-60505.766a101a.zip" not sure where I downloaded it from but worked like a charm and then I applied the the updates to get to 2.2.2 (FRG83G).
And now, how do I root? I tried SuperOneClick, I installed the USB drivers etc, the software runs, it installs superuser on my phone, the SOC SU test is OK but I installed Terminal on the phone and the SU command returns access denied, also I installed Root Manager and it doesn't start because it doesn't have sufficient permissions, I have no pop-up when opening to grant root access to Root Manager.
Any ideas?
I finally managed to root my phone thanks to Danger-Rat's super easy tutorial you can find here
Thanks for all the help.

Original G1 owner need unlocking help

I have the G1 since it came out on T-Mobile. Since then I have moved on to Samsung Vibrant, original Galaxy Tab and currently on the international Galaxy Tab 7.7 as my phone and tab. I would like the xda community help in unlocking my G1 for a backup phone on my current sim. One thing to know, I am no longer using T-Mobile, I am on Straight Talk. I have been looking online to find a way to get it unlocked but all I come up with is, steps to unlock using the unlock code from T-Mobile (again I am no longer with T-Mobile) this is no use to me, or just follow links to websites where you pay for the code (would not trust them).
Is there a way to unlock it without the need of an unlock code? The original Galaxy Tab was able to be unlocked using Terminal Emulator by a member here on xda, would this be possible to do on the G1? Another option that is not good for me is ADB as I have no clue how to use it, I am okay using terminal emulator if given the correct code. I greatly appreciate your help and looking forward to your suggestions.
solved.......
Ok, since i was not getting any info here i decided to go ahead and pay for the unlock code. I used http://www.unlock-htc.com/unlocking-HTC.php, even though i was a bit sceptical, they accept paypal so at least i could fight the charge if any issues came up. Also i was able to root my G1 using this site http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/23/how-to-root-the-htc-g1-dream-androot-method/. So now i have an unlocked and rooted G1. Next up flashing a rom, maybe.
yeah unlike some other phones no one has been able to sim unlock these phones without a code, at least to my knowledge. the only other way I know off for you to have gotten a code for free would be to try and contact htc directly or have some one you know with tmobile get it for you
I have rooted many g1s over time but never used androot, I have heard it works fine
you will definetly want to try out some newer roms, so many better than stock. and look into upgrading your radio/spl as well as a custom recovery to make all the new rom flashes easier

well if you rooted with androot you should be ok, you now need to flash a custom recovery, I suggest amonra (also there is an app in the market that checks for root, I suggest use it to make sure) if you are rooted and have the sdk package on computer proceed
get a terminal emulator from the market as well as superuser and linda file manager, amonra image, put it on the root of sd card and rename it to recovery.img (if on windows it may auto put extention in there so name it just recovery)
open terminal emulator and type
su
then type
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
wait a minute or so
now reboot into recovery

you will need to get adb.exe and fastboot.exe and the proper drivers for those programs installed on your computer to do a full upgrade of your radio/spl.
there are ways around this but it will be much easier and faster in the future if you have this.
also safer to flash firmware via fastboot as apposed to recovery

find a thread called adb for dummies or something along those lines, it has a mini package in it with all the required programs and files to do minimal work (adb, fastboot, drivers, etc) it also explains how to use these functions (just a quick basic idea anyway)
the sdk package is big if you download everything, and unless you start learning to develop roms and or apps most of it will seem usless to you
your other option is to just root the phone the old fasioned way, following the cyanogen wiki completley starting with the downgrading with the dreaming.nbh file
I've used this method o so many times, the first time took me manybe half an hour because I had to read up on it and understand it. now when I root a g1 I'm done in about 10 mins with rooting, upgrading to the latest radio/spl and installing a custom rom and recovery. so in other words it isn't too hard or time consumming and you may have less issues

Ok so I figured out where I was going wrong, I needed to downgrade to RC29.
So I followed cyanogen wiki and did the following:
Downgraded to RC29
Installed Amon_Ras latest recovery image
Upgraded radio to 2.22.23. 02
Spl 1.33.2005
Then I tried to install cm 5.0.8 (the links for cm 6 are not working) it flashed properly but then it just gets stuck on the G1 screen. I redid all the steps and still same issue. Any suggestions?
PS I did noticed that my original radio is the same as the one I installed using cyanogen wiki, is this correct?
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda premium
