I've noticed an explosion of roms in the Dev section the last couple of months. This is great new to all of us and a good sign that the Huawei X6 is alive and kicking.
Today the is a handful (or more) roms under development, all with different flavor, more or less developed, some more stable than others but all Android driven (yeah, of cause).
We've got Miui, Sharp, Mooke, BlackIce, BumbleBee and yet new ones coming every week.
The XDA Dev Section of Huawei X6 rocks and I'd like to thank all of you in contributing to us all. None mentioned no one forgotten
Me? No, I am not a developer but a big Linux fan. Have run Linux since 1998 and also was a professional in implementing the OS in office oriented environment while trying to get CEO's to kick out the NT4 which was the only running server at most places by then. I supported the system, marketed it and implemented it. I worked hard to get old school Windows users to move over to the good side by showing the great windowmaker KDE and so on.
No, I am not a developer and I'm pretty much a newbie even though I can manage most by myself by trail and error, google a lot and read miles of forum threads all over the place.
One thing has come to my mind lately. I'm not sure, but it feels like a thread. A trend spreading.
Aside from hardware comparability issues I have a feeling that most of the "roms" gives not much more than "a different windowmaker", another graphic user interface. GUI.
Sure, exciting too! But.. and here comes the but.
What is most important to you. 6 more GUI's in a month or one stable? I feel that somewhere focus got lost due to this.
Think about it. Gravity rotation to the cost of instable GPU. Instable GPU that eats more battery.
Soon the "new rom" is dumped for yet a new rom and we're back into the treadmill.
Also, I can see newbies (yeapp, I'm one too, remember) demanding quick bug fixes every day. Keep in mind that developers are not doing this as a full or part time job. This is their hobby and what ever effort is put in to this goes from their free time they could share with others. I KNOW there are people who wants more attention than their partner, father (or mother) or spouse sitting in front of the screen all the time being "un-social".
This is what has been on my mind for a while now. I didn't have any intention to hurt or discourage anyone. Just to lighten my heart a bit.
And while at it, here a light and simple GUI for you

sad part is few great devs left us as fast as rom development
but still we have new developers are coming in.
I think KDE or Gnome are just like launcher in android, while miui, cm,mokee, stock are just like linux distro/distribution (ubuntu, redhat, centos etc). And android is one of some linux for embedded device which has speciality on sensors. Am I right?
So the choice is just like if we choose a linux distribution.
Just my thought.

Oh that one. I think most of launchers almost have the same concept. Some different like TSF, Miui home, etc. I have used ssLauncher for about 3 months, the longest launcher I ever use.

+1 For GO Launcher, using it for about a year & it's getting better n better with time...!!

2)yes you can, hold the widget for 1 second release it and touch it.
3)you can change to "list view" in app drawer, so you can search your apps easily. I think it is more handy than search option, all you have to do is touch the alphabet on the right side so you don't have to type anything.
I just using it yesterday, and i like this home replacement (dx home) a lot.

Same like you, i've tried many launchers. Was using it for some time, then got borred by the same concept with most launchers. I looked for something different looks and ways. I use SPB for about 2 months, too heavy. TSF about 2 weeks, not easy to use. Then I found ssLauncher, just like dream come true, it's just the same with I imagined over a year ago for android launcher. I've tried Go launcher 2 weeks ago for a day, still the best for the same concept with stock. Tried some others but always went back to ssLauncher .

A new launcher called TSF Shell is released.
It looks very nice, but it seems very demanding on the resources.
Anyone tried this already?
And do you think the €12,50 price ok?

Yes, I have.
Load of balls.
It's a shame that I missed the refund window by about 30 seconds.
when was it out? i just went to the official website yesterday and it only shows Beta tester advertisement!

So they spent their development time working on the video?
Shame - looked like it could have been a winner (even if a bit of a resource and battery hog)
It looks alright but is confusing, not intuitive and left me feeling like my mind had been turned inside out.
I did. I like it so far. Exceptionally smooth. Music, weather widgets work as shown in the video. The memo widget is a joy to use, works exceptionally well with our S-Pen. just click on it and write away. Why don't you try it for yourself? 15 minutes is good enough to test it out. For me it's usually the feel of things. I either like it or I don't, right after the first touch. Also, the only way to change between homescreens is the orb at the bottom-left corner. Frustrating at first, but since it's so smooth and accurate, it feels natural after a while.
Pure eye-candy. I do feel the price is quite high.
Does it upset you that I don't like it? LOL
15 minutes was too long for me. I know what I don't like. But I'm pleased for you that you like it.

Not at all
Personally, I dislike the mechanism to get to the app drawer, but I can live with it. Also, there are four homescreens, and that's about it. No settings menu either. You can change transition animation of the app drawer, though. There's a themes menu as well, but there are no themes online currently (doubtful, could be a connection error). Live wallpapers don't seem to apply too. You can select and configure them, but they won't apply. I think I'll have to watch the video again, it seems some of the app arrangement functionality is missing, or I can't get to it. I'll update with results.
Hated it, plus the price is outragous! Good thing I didn't miss the refune window

For everyone that wants a true launcher: GO LAUNCHER!
Using it now, its very complicated and confusing, but smooth, fast and pretty
Lacks too much options, and it's overpriced ...
Damn expensive little launcher !!
My god... I just checked on the market and my first impression towards the price was " RIP OFF ! " ... The price tag of $15.49 was just bit too much...

+1000000000000000000000000000000000 that !!
yesterday i tried it and i'm still getting used of it. by the way, after a day using it, i can say:
it's the fastest launcher i ever tried and it's perfect for the note.
graphical effect are very good and fluid, never had a lag.
it's widgets are wonderful (for me) and free
but don't forget that:
it has an interface different from any other launcher
it is possible to change pages only with the button down on the left of the screen
it is really expensive
do you have to buy it, in my opinion?
if you want to try something new and different, this is the launcher for you. the only thing i don't like is that the operation to change screens with one hand could be difficult, because the note's screen is very big.
P.S: i don't want to invite anyone buying the launcher, i'm only telling you my opinion, so, maybe, you can decide better what to do
I have to disagree with most of you here, the only thing I agreed is the price, come on $17 for a launcher? I personally don't care but $17 can't get the population of this launcher to nowhere. I think they should reconsider the price down to something like $7 or $8.
besides that. me thinks this launcher kick a$$. Yes, it's not completed YET but it's already the most intuitive, fluid(in terms of animation and work flow) launcher I've ever used.
some features are missing here and there but it's a beta, I am sure they will be there in some time and after few more months of tweaking, updating , more themes and plugins. This could be the BEST launcher out there. I totally see the potential out of this launcher.
I am not persuading anyone to get this launcher as the price is semi retarded and the supposed features are missing for most of the user's expectation.
But I do advice you guys keep an eye on this launcher for upcoming updates, hope TSF will complete the whole thing very soon and set the price right too. Then I am sure some of you will change your mind.

Echoes my thoughts since it was released. One to watch.
After using it for about a week, I feel ripped off. Other than a couple of fancy animations I can't see how this launcher is any better than any other launcher. Nothing at all special about it. Perhaps I am missing something but I doubt it. Like chameleon launcher overpriced and under featured launcher.
I searched with all sorts of answers, but nothing for what I'm wondering.
Is there 1 keyboard (APP) that is just the best of the best?
Is that thumb keyboard for 2.50 on the market the best?
Thanks
Rightnow I'm using swype, although its glitchy sometimes as far as resolution.
I don't know why the concept of a "best" app or rom is so stuck in peoples heads. Every thread asking for a best something or other gets the same answer, that it's a subjective thing based on personal preferences. Try a few out. Find one you like. That's how you find your "best".

Disagree, there is usually 2-3 most popular apps and tons that are horrible.
For a phone, its swype, swiftkey-x that's mostly recommended.
So why would it be different for another tablet (big phone)
?

That doesn't really disprove what I said, all I'm saying is that instead of asking other people for their opinions ,maybe you should try a few keyboards (you have 15 minutes to get a refund if you hate it) and find the one that YOU think is the best.
I tried all. Best to me is smart keyboard.

Thumb keyboard all the way. If u r a good typer with your thumbs on phones, then u will love this app. Always the 1st thing I install when installing a new ROM.
I like Hacker's keyboard, it works great, it's highly customisable, and most important to me - it supports multiple languages.
For bluetooth keyboard I use External Keyboard Helper - it allows me to set layout for USB or bluetooth keyboard (ANY and EVERY layout, as far as I can see).
I use hackers on my xoom, flyer and gnote.

$10 is way too much for just a launcher I think... looks cool though.
It looks good, but I thought even $4 was to much for Nova...
I might be a little guilty about it, buy it is pretty good. The main feature that someone would want with this is the changing, which means it will take you to a home page at a certain time, depending on location
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
So what's the big deal about this?
I don't see anything special about this launcher. Plus $10 is way too much for a mere launcher, especially considering they used Kickstarter to gather their fund in the beginning.
It is just new. The main reason to buy it is because of the gos integration thing. So say you are a t school or work, it will take you to a customized place for those things

Awesome concept, apart from price, the only use provided widgets, laggyness and lack of customization is a big downfall but they should get fixed seeing that it's only v1
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I don't actually know how practical this thing is by putting on a whole bunch of auto-update widgets clunking on the home screen to suck the battery.
I'd rather keep my home screen as minimalist as possible.

It should have been fixed in beta. There's no reason to bring something out of beta if there are glaring bugs and lack of features. Especially with a $10 price tag. They should have just had an open beta instead of charging people to participate. I mean Kickstarter.
I use it, I love it, doesn't affect my battery doesnt slow the tablet down(only full storage seems to do that). Ten bucks for something that you have the potential to use for the entire time you use android is not much when looked that way.
To the other guy wondering why they went on kickstarter first then just to sell it later. Let me explain people need food, drink, and a place to stay and or work. So kickstarter to fund the app and be able to pay people to work on it. I didn't have to rebuy it or anything, so
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I got it earlier this morning and it's pretty nice, I dunno if I'll use it as my daily for a while though. I really wish it could use other widgets though... And they better not charge for new ones.

I keep my home screens bare or to a minimum for this very reason.
But the location thing is cool I guess for people who need something like that.
Personally, I'll pass... $10 is way too much foe an app like this, IMHO.

The developers probably got rich off he funding from kick starter and re now recouping their actual costs trough the ridiculously high play store price. I don't see the Point of such a radical launcher departure. The novelty will soon we're off.

it's a neat idea, but let's be honest, no one's gonna use that changing homescreen feature. And it doesn't auto change, a popup comes up and asks u if you want to change homescreen. Kinda defeats the purpose, especially when it's only a swipe away.
True. It isn't as great as stock, but could be useful

What do you think are the best features that your nexus 4 is capable off.
Personally I think the fact you can use it as a gaming console (ps3 controller and hdmi output) is a fantastic feature of the phone.
Also the fact I can use it as a tablet type device by reading pdfs (essential for work) and as a media centre with the music and films.
What are your favourite features of this phone and of android in general?
This could be a useful thread for people to learn about things they weren't aware of . So what aspects do you enjoy the most?

You meet some interesting folks, you have some great laughs, some not so great arguments, and more importantly constantly learning... If you're willing to listen.. There is always someone around here willing to help another person out.. All you gotta do is ask.. And if you get bored.. You can pick any thread in the development section, start from page one and just read.. You're bound to learn something new..
The best feature of Android is IMO that it is open source and the best feature of the Nexi is IMO that they run clean Android and have full fastboot support.
having used an Android phone since the OG Galaxy S (Captivate), i've really come to love that the Nexus isn't locked to any particular carrier, and has no bloatware. in the past, i've always felt like i had to root and ROM my phones the moment i got them, just to get rid of AT&T's craptastic pre-loaded apps. i've had my N4 for nearly 3 whole months and haven't found a NEED to mod it at all (i still may in the future because of a desire to, but the need isn't there).
that's why i love the Nexus...

I've been firmly entrenched in Apple's ecosystem for almost 30 years, and while most apps still exhibit more polish on iOS... Android is catching up.
Nexus 7 was the first Android device that impressed me, and Nexus 4 is more of the same. While I initially missed the ability to communicate via AppleEvents to my server, I managed to solve that problem and there is now very little iOS abilities I miss on Android.

Htc have never made a loss. Also the Devs love the device, so you'll get good support no matter what.
Love my One but up to you!

Lolz HTC is the only company who has been struggling amongst all telecommunication handset manufacturing companies. I don't know what u talking about.

I prefer the one. I work at a store and I sell both but for me the One is better.
I prefer the ui and find it smoother. Especially with Trickdroid. That Rom is beast. Actually development in general is awesome so I am not leaving anytime soon.

its not worth losing money over changing imho. the only s4 flaw that worries is me is potential burn in if you are heavy user in bright environments. Check the s3 screens on demo at your local store. nasty burn in on them...
The one all the way man. The s4 may have a bunch of cool features but how many of them do you use? And just look at it... It's freaking beautiful compared to the plastic crap...

Its tricky but if possible spend a little time with One. Not just couple of minutes but little more than that.
There are niggles with even One. Those who own the device will most of the times give you biased opinions. As owner of both, I would not feel it will be sound advice to tell someone to ditch S4 in favour of One and on top of that lose money in the process.
Rather than make another long post about it, I will link to my previous post in locked thread. That thread had to be cleaned because fanboys on both sides just made it ugly in there. And in the end mod had to delete all but OP and my post
Anyway here is the link to it : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41699179&postcount=2
Think twice before making a move. One is beautiful device, but S4 is equally good(not in terms of looks) and probably more functional with more traditional way of doing things which are universal to most android handsets. One takes completely different path.
Development for both phones wont be an issue. S4 and One both have great development work going on for it.

Not true apart from quick toggles its missing nothing from traditional Android...there is virtually no roms on s4 all the top developers have the one that should tell u something...the interface on Samsung touch wiz is horrible ..sorry imo the interface just ruins that phone for me

This is what I am talking about. Blind one sided view of things. Nothing on One works like stock android by default unless you change the Sense 5 launcher with something else. Not even simple wallpaper changing or creating shortcuts and dragging tray icon apps etc. Even these basic things are done differently. HTC specifically have gone their own way about almost everything with One. Some people love it, some hate it. I dont like it.
And development will not be an issue. S4 has been out for less than a month. One had shortages but it was in hands of lot of developers early.
S4 already had Omega and Wanam ROMs, two top recognised developers for Samsung phones. More will jump in eventually. It is just matter of time.
TWUI is more functional than Sense 5. It may not look as elegant as our sense to look at, but it works just fine. It might have colour scheme that represents brazilian rainforest, but it is functional and most actions work like stock android. So even if someone is coming from likes of Nexus 4 or older Samsung phones or even any old ICS or JB and even gingerbread, they will feel right at home.
S4 may not be as good looking, as well built phone as One, but it is no slouch. Definitely not something that is worth less than One or something you need to throw out to get One and lose money in process.
It has its share of problems just like we have our own share of problems with One. And that is something lot of people here wont accept (that One really does have issues ).
I still use One as my primary phone, that does not mean I am ready to tell someone to ditch his perfectly fine S4 to get One.

Is this another fan boy post?
I like One, but I would not pay $100 to switch. Both are the best phone available. I believe S4 is more functional in certain area too. But I really can't take the Brazilian rainforest colour scheme which has no style at all, it's just trying to target all kind of audience including 15 years kid. I like the Sense style, it's elegant and classy, undeniable best speakers, best low night camera, etc...

Disable the gimmick apps, those are for marketing. Use the phone instead.
Thanks a lot guys for your honest thoughts. From what I read. I'm guessing its smart to stick with my S4 for a little while still. It's plasticiy and it has a bit of lag time after time. Hope it will get better. And than maby I'll wait until next spring. I only used Htc for a long time maby it's ok with a bit of change for some months.

The One is only okay.
I've extensively used both the One Dev. Ed. and the GS4 and you're not missing out on anything. I am currently using the One and trying out various launchers. IMHO the GS4 had a better phone, calendar, email app, and I really miss 4.2.2. Don't be fooled by the unlocked bootloader: I've literally installed every custom ROM on the One. The difference between the screens is negligible, yet the autobrightness of the One is more functional and CM 10.1 has excellent autobrightness (unfortunately, the screen would go black every time I made a phone call. I like Blinkfeed, but am disappointed by Sense. The GS4 and the One are my first Android phones and I would readily choose the GS4. I have every intention to sell my One and buy the 32gb GS4.
Disable the s4 gimmick features and the phone will speed up
