I hate to be the one to tell you, but it looks like you were hit by the "Encryption Unsuccessful" bug that sometimes happens with ICS roms. Hopefully you didn't have anything on your phone's internal SD that you didn't have backed up somewhere else, because it's very possible that you will no longer have access to it.
You may have a small chance if you try flashing back with a stock rom from Odin or Heimdall, but it's a small chance. There's a sticky in the Development section with stock roms, or you can look at the one in my signature (assuming you already have Gingerbread bootloaders).
Take a look at the "Encryption Unsuccessful" thread in the Development section for things that you can do at this point.

It's possible, but since he's showing a screenshot of Corn Kernel, it makes me think otherwise. I'm pretty sure the ICS filesystem won't work very well with corn kernel.
Try flashing a stock 1-click through download mode. Preferably no bootloaders if possible.

Ah. I assumed it wouldn't be Corn Kernel, as he said he flashed an ICS rom, but now that you mention it, the android in the back isn't the usual one you would see on ICS kernels.
That is the stock Android recovery for Samsung. I can't see the version of Recovery (2e or 3e). That could be the EU bug or it could be he used an incomplete ODIN/Heimdall and flashed his phone...

Good point. For me, seeing the mmcblk0p2 message immediately brought up the Encryption unsuccessful bug.
I only said the incomplete ODIN/Heimdall flash because that has happened to me before

hi, I hope someone can help me with this. I was helping a friend to flash his stock X8 to a custom ROM.
I was going smoothly throughout the whole process, until I'm stuck here now.
What I did was unlock the bootloader using this guide.
Then I rooted his phone and installed xRecovery.
Next thing was I tried to install GingerZaraki, I formatted the microSD card before placing the ROM file into it, then proceed to flash it. I skipped a step (which I really shouldn't) which is flashing the kernel 1st, because I assumed that the kernel would come with the ROM.
Now apparently I'm wrong with this assumption, as the phone cannot boot pass the splash screen (Sony Ericsson screen), and I can't boot into recovery.
I tried flashing the kernel using FlashTool, but apparently there is an error while flashing

Turns out I had to restart my PC first, after that the flashtool works properly.
I have now flashed back to stock and restart the whole root and flash process.
Thanks for being so helpful though!

Right now I've rooted stock ROM, unlocked bootloader, installed CWM, and trying to flash nAa kenrel, but I keep getting this error.
Any idea why?
btw, I'm pretty sure I've unlocked the bootloader, considering the "r" is a small letter, or is that not it?

You don't have to format sd card.
Maybe you havent unlock the bootloader, reread, carefully this time, the guide.
Also don't forget to full wipe/factory reset in cwm before installing the rom,but first you have to flash the kernel with flashtool. Btw why don't you flash a rom for stock kernel,I'm smelling trouble for you,I see you don't follow instunctions carefully :/

Hey, folks.
First-time listener, first-time caller.
My Galaxy SIII GT-I9305 originates from Hong Kong.
When I bought it (used, on Kijiji) it was running 4.1.2
When 4.3 finally became available for this model a couple of weeks ago I bit the bullet and installed it using Kies.
I knew 4.3 had issues but I went ahead anyway because I live dangerously, dontcha know.
Today I decided I wanted root so, instead of taking my time and reading the sage advice of kind people like you I jumped right in with ODIN and Chainfire using Instructions I found on these forums and elsewhere.
The rooting procedure seemed to go off without a hitch. Then the phone booted up. Then this started happening:

Selecting "Update" brings me to this:
And anything I do that requires root gives me this:
I tried re-rooting using a different version of ODIN to no avail.
Posters in other threads suggested re-installing SuperSU.
I tried executing superuser.apk using ES File Explorer and got this:
Incidentally, in Download Mode I can see that I've triggerd the Knox Void Warranty Flag, not that I have a warranty.
At this point I just want to get my phone to work as it did with stock 4.3.
What's my quickest route there?
Upgrade SuperSu
Fails in recovery format system cache data and sdcard.
Boot to download mode flash stock rom via Odin.
I don't think the root operation was successful; the Root Checker apps I downloaded hang when I check. I tried launching Titanium Backup and it hangs, too, at "Asking for root rights".
In fact, any time I launch any app that needs root I get the Security Information warning as in my first screenshot.

Mounts and storage? What do you mean by that?
Format? As in I should boot into recovery and choose "wipe data/factory reset"? Can't I do that from stock recovery?
Is this something I have to do before I flash the stock firmware? After?
I'm really confused.

Root problem
I too had root problems-rooting OK and then losing it on a restart. This is a GT-I9305 LTE,XXUEMLl5 EE UK firmware and Cf Auto root downloaded from Chainfire's site.I did find 2 versions of the Autoroot file slightly different sizes but both work (up to a point-read on).
So,initially installed 4.3 firmware with PC Odin and Autorooted with same setup. Here's the first catch. As stated by Chainfire, the phone should reboot into stock recovery. If it doesn't you need to do this "manually" and then just reboot-see Chainfire thread.2nd catch.I read somewhere that "Fix permissions" could upset the rooting process,so I wouldn't do that whilst in stock recovery at this stage.
You now should have a rooted firmware but my problem was that if I restarted I would lose the root
My solution was to use Mobile Odin Pro.I know it costs but it did work for me and that make's it worth every penny.Read on.
Whilst you've still got root install the firmware again with MO Pro.This installs root and SuperSu using Everoot.Reinstalling the Supersu or upgrading will possibly tell you that your SU Binary needs updating. When I tried "Normal" it didn't work.At the moment you don't have custom recovery installed,so using MO Pro again install TWRP using their "Open recovery tar" and try updating SU by selecting TWRP/CWM.When script has installed reboot and no more prompt to update binary.I didn't try CWM.Read somewhere it might not work.TWRP does.
Now I have a rooted phone with stock 4.3 on it.Root survives a restart and much use removing all the bloatware that Samsung provide for us.
But that's another story.
I hope this post helps those with root problems.Going through the stages above, working, not working, took a long time but I do now have a rock solid fast 4.3 phone.
Anyone fancy a KitKat?
P.S.Just booted the phone into TWRP and tried fixing permissions.Thankfully still have root but it had a think about it!
Good news:
I managed to update SuperSU— not through Play store but using the superuser.apk file from Chainfire's 1.89 update. It's funny because the version already installed was 1.89.*
I extracted the apk from the package, put it on my external SD card and launched the file using ES File Explorer.
What's also interesting is that I had to try this several times before it worked. Somewhere along the way I also wiped the phone's cache in (stock) recovery mode, although I can't, this morning, recall whether I did that immediately prior to the successful update, although it was definitely some time prior.
*I guess it's not unlike in Windows, when, say, a NIC stops working suddenly, usually a quick driver reinstallation does the trick.
Firstly , my phone suddenly became no services and baseband unknown .

I'm not sure, but maybe you could use adb in Download mode to get the backup files. I'm only not sure if you are able to use adb in Download mode.

I think adb cannot be used in download mode . It can only be used in normal , recovery mode or while boating (I dont know if it is real) . But must not in download mode .Download mode only can be used to flashing with odin .

Hello all
I have an old Samsung Captivate, my kids were using it. Now they've new phones, so they left this aside.
Anyway, my son put cyanogen mod on this phone. But I want to put this back to stock. I tried the methods at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, but that didnot help, as I cannot yet go into download mode, as well as Odin or Samsung Kies does not recognize this device. It goes into recovery mode and shows CVM-based Recovery v6.0.3.1. There is no download link on this. I've tried vol down+power, then vol up+vol down+power, then just both volume buttons, but nothing helps.
The device is reconized by my laptop, and it is there under android devices in device manager, just doesnt get recognized by either samsung kies or odin.):
My all other samsung devices are working fine with the drivers I have.
I'm on Windows 10.
So please help me get this phone back to stock.
thanks

Did you pull the battery before attempting the button combinations for getting into download mode?
If you did that, this thread may provide another way for you to get to download mode.
Is there a specific reason you are going back to stock Eclair, android 2.1, instead of using one of the newer one-click stock roms?
Others are available here. But then, that may be where you found the link to the rom you tried.
Which bootloader and modem were on the phone while it was in use? Which version of CM?
I've not used CM on any of my devices, I always use stock rom, even after I root.
Secondly, I am loaning this phone out to my friend, and she's not very digital savvy. I want to give her the phone with as little customization done as possible, because that's what she'll be most comfortable with.
I'll try the methods on the thread you posted above.
thanks
Hello
Nope, nothing helped, the phone just booted into the home page.
thanks

I must have misunderstood what you said in the original post.
I thought you stated that the phone in question had cyanogenmod rom on it at one time, installed by your son. I also thought you said it currently had CWM Recovery, v6.0.3.1, installed. This could be important because some versions of CM ROM would require an update in the bootloader from the Eclair bootloader. Those versions would require an upgrade to the Gingerbread bootloader. This includes a re-partitioning of the internal harddrive. Supposedly the GB bootloaders will work with the Eclair roms
So far AT&T GB bootloaders have been backward compatible with all I897 (even I9000) Froyo/Eclairs ROMs. I have used I9000 based ROMs with AT&T GB BLs. Someone in CM7 thread claimed to use AT&T GB bootloaders with CM7 without any problem.

but if you are on the GB bootloader, why not try the GB stock rom, android 2.3.5?
Since you can get to the home screen, is the current rom fully functional?
What rom, and version, is it that you can boot into?
If it is CM, there should be an app named Terminal Emulator installed. If it is present you can run these two commands to determine the bootloader and modem that are on your phone:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
getprop | grep version.baseband

for bootloader, it says unknown.
for version.baseband it says [gsm.version.baseband]: [T959TLJL3]
When the phone bootsup, it shows cyanogen mod, then when I boot into recovery, it shows CVM Recovery, v6.0.3.1(and it says CVM, not CWM). So now I am confused what do I have on the phone?

You may have just given a valuable clue.
That baseband is from the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, a T-Mobile device, not the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate, an AT&T device.
Either someone flashed T-Mobile software on your Captivate. Or, you are trying to flash AT&T software on your Vibrant. I don't know if these devices and their software are cross compatible.
Could you remove the battery and check on the underlying label the model of the phone?

Thanks for chiming in. That sounds vaguely familiar, but I have had no experience with Kies in years. I use Linux and Kies will not work on Linux based computers. (I think I used Kies for my first upgrade on my Captivate, back when I was still dual booting Linux and WinXP. That was the upgrade from Eclair to Froyo.)
Yes, @tahrang those pics help answer some of the other questions I asked. They show that you have the a Jellybean ROM installed using a Gingerbread kernel (GB). I think it is the PACman ROM. Hopefully removing Kies, as Dennis suggests, allows you to get to download with one of the many methods suggested in the thread I linked to works, then you can flash a stock rom. I would suggest one of the Odin-One-Click methods that installs a stock Gingerbread ROM. I think they final three identifiers begin with K, ones like KH3, KK4, etc. Use a one-click that does not install bootloaders, it is not needed at this time.
still not going into download mode. always goes into recovery ):
I can access the phone via my laptop. From recovery, if I have a rom zip file on the sd card, can I flash it that way? Where would I find such rom(stock) zip file?
thanks

Yes, you can flash roms from CWM recovery. The One-Click files will not work for this. You will need to use a recovery flashable zip. You can find stock and custom roms in the Development sub-forum. With the Captivate and CWM recovery you need to put the flashable zip on the root of the internal sdcard, IIRC. I don't think it will flash the rom from the external sdcard.
Since your laptop will access the phone, did you use either of the adb methods to boot into download mode? They are described in one of the other threads I linked.
Also, you could use adb to flash the portions of a rom, whichever type it is - recovery flashable or Odin one-click. But you would need the adb/flashboot tutorial threads to understand that process and the commands involved.
can you send the link to the flashable zip files?
thanks

The link in the previous post will lead to them. The early posts in that sub-forum are to the one-clicks. The custom roms on the first page are flashable zips. It may take going through several pages to find a stock rom that is a flashable zip with a valid download link. I am on a slow connection with limited data, I can't test the downloads for you.
