[Q] (Bell) HTC Raider slow data connection - Any Suggestions? - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

I have been browsing through the forums for some time now and haven't had much luck.. So I thought i'd post my question here.
First off, here's the situation:
I purchased an HTC Raider from Bell mobility about 6 weeks ago. I ran some speed tests and was getting 10+ mbps, which I was quite impressed with. About 3 weeks ago (around the time of the release for the ICS with bell, and after I updated it) I started to notice slower connection speeds. I started to run some speed tests and to date I am getting about 3kbps download speeds, while maintaining very high upload speeds. I can still open webpages and use the internet, but things such as facebook can take up to 30 seconds to load a page.. and downloads are significantly slower. Instead of <1 minute downloads i'm expecting closer to 5 mins.
My Question:
Is there any way to fix this problem? Any suggestions as to how to establish a stronger connection and to increase my download speeds to what they were when i first got the phone? I know my phone and network is capable of much higher speeds, I just dont know what the issue is.
Thanks in advance! - all suggestions welcome!

Just so that everyone is aware, I have restarded the phone, tried different sim cards, contacted technical solutions, done factory reset, etc. Everything is up to date, and there is no reason that the issue would be on the provider's end of things. Have tried in a similiar phone running on the same network, and there are no issues all. It's something to do with the phone and it's current settings. --
thanks again!

any luck yet

Same Slow Speeds
I have had exactly the same problems. I have called Bell TS and went through the same proceedures, including a factory reset. The strange part of it is this started to happen right after the upgrade as well, but only seems to happen in an area near lake huron. As soon as i leave this area all my speeds come right up and everything operates normally. My wifes phone, HTC Desire, operates normally on both upload and download. Hers has not been upgraded to ICS (i am afraid that she will have the same problems). After a bunch of testing on my part, i beleive there is something related to the ICS update that certain bell towers dont like. I have relayed all this to Bell, their answer is to send me off to the billing dept to get a partial refund. I am running a stock Bell rom at the moment. There has to be something within the ICS upgrade that can be tweaked to fix this concern, since my wifes phone (on the same network) works perfectly.
Thanks for any help

Assuming you are on an LTE plan (yes?) and that you have an LTE sim card and all that...
1) Is there LTE coverage in the zone you are normally in?
2) Go to Settings, About Phone, Network. Under Mobile Network Type, does it say LTE or HSDPA?
3) Go to Settings, Mobile Network, Access Point Names. Are there many entries in the list, or just one? Click the one that is active (with the green dot or whatever) and compare it to below (I can't see this being incorrect because it's FROM Bell , but just in case?)

Also.. have you tried going to other areas (where reception could be better?) and trying a speed test there?

I have a Raider on Bell too. How's your WiFi speed? Min is pretty damn slow. Like worse than 2g speeds but on all WiFi connections.
Im in Vancouver BC Canada, if you want to cross reference your settings to mine I would be happy to read them off to you.

I'm pretty happy with my LTE speed. I get 30-40mbps usually... 15mbps on a bad day. But then again, I'm right in the city. Bell's LTE coverage outside the city isn't the greatest just yet. If you have a friend that is also on Bell LTE, compare your speed tests from the same location.
Or compare with a friend on Rogers LTE? My friend (on a Rogers Raider) doesn't get very good speed while at my place.
As for wifi... I don't know. Are you into trying custom ROMs/kernels? I wonder if they can help with better wifi performance.

Lol..really? I was getting way faster speeds on rogers LTE in Toronto..weird..

[Q] Bought used phone, no signal / poor reception

Hi all,
I have a question to those more knowledgeable about GSM network/settings (I come from a CDMA background). I bought my girlfriend a Captivate on EBay for Christmas; everything is working OK except it cannot get any signal. As far as I know everything is set up as it should, it just won't show any bars. While using the ServiceMode app [*#0011#] it goes from NO SERVICE to GSM : LIMITED and back over and over. While using her old phone in the same spot it has full bars. We went to the ATT store and made sure everything was set up on their end. I think the phone is defective but I figured I would check here first. I'll attach some relevant (I think) screen caps and if anything jumps out or you have anything for me to try and fix this, please let me know.
edit/
Also does anyone know the exact location of the internal antenna? I opened the phone up to see if something came lose during shipment or whatever and I didn't really get anywhere. I wanted to try and jury rig a extended antenna to see if that helped reception.
You flashed that ROM/theme on the phone? Or it came like that when you bought it?
That is Serendipity 5.1.. I figure while she can't use the phone as a phone, she should still benefit from a nice rom and kernel. When I received the phone originally it had the stock rom. Before I flashed a custom I made sure to check everything out first and the problem was there since the beginning. Since then I've flashed back to stock, tried different radios, etc etc but the results are always the same.
I don't know what the person before me did to the phone though, maybe he/she flashed something incorrectly and wrote over important settings? I don't know what I'm looking at that's really why I am asking here.
Grabbed some more settings, anything seem strange or wrong?
Stupid question, but do you have an active AT&T Sim card in the Phone? btw, these phones absolutely, positively will not work on Sprint or any other CDMA carrier.

Yes I have her new Sim card which was activated at the store over the weekend. I can switch it between her two phones, old one full bars, Captivate no bars.
Check you APN Settings. Menu> Wireless and networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names and let us know what they are, and we can go from there.
Says ATT WAP
Tap where is says att wap and check the settings to see if they match these:
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username:not set
Password:not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
mms port - 80
mcc 310
mnc 410
authentication type - none
apn type- internet + mms
If not, adjust them accordingly and see if it clears up. If not I'd say you have a serious hardware problem.
Those settings look good to me. Thanks for the help I suppose my problem is more serious. Anyone know of anything else I can check to maybe narrow my problem down? I'm not afraid to try and replace a radio/circuit board/internal antenna.
enter *#2263# and check that band selection is set to automatic.
Yep set to AUTOMATIC - Select GSM & WCDMA All Bands
Is there something equivalent to a PRL for GSM phones? Something that tells it what towers it can connect to?
idk if its related but i have poor signal problems too with my phone sometimes only shows bars and no h or edge and sometimes just says no service or emergency calls only
Yeah same here, right now it says Emergency calls only. I know for a fact that there are at least 6 GSM cell towers in this vicinity.
Can this issue have something to do with a failed unlocking attempt? I've been trying to research all routes and I tried to "unlock" to phone by using SGS Unlock Tool (rooted method), it was never successful. It states "Sorry, no codes found unknown error", possibly meaning that something internally is screwed up? I'm just pulling stuff out of my bum at this point. Any help will be appreciated!
Last bump for the weekend. Any suggestions? Already bought a new one but I still have 30 days to return it if I can figure out how to fix this.

[Q] Note and ATT 4G

Hey guys I just switched from captivate to Gnote, and trying to setup the data network here.
I had the original 3g plan with att, and I read on gsmarena that this phone supports LTE 700 which is what att is using right now.
So I am just wondering, is this phone capable of using the att 4g? do I need to get a new sim from them in order to get on the 4g network?
Thank you very much in advance!
LTE version or hspa version
did you buy the Korean Note that supports LTE or have a regular HSPA note. the regular note only supports the AT&T hspa and needs an 4g apn.

In short, GSMarena got it sorely wrong. The internationally available version of the Note, with the Exynos chipset, most certainly does not support LTE in any shape or form. It should also be mentioned that Verizon also uses 700MHZ LTE as well, but both AT&T and VZW use totally different blocks within that spectrum space anyway. So, I would find it strange that GSMarena may possibly claim that not only does the Note have support for 700MHZ LTE, but also every possible carrier block therein. Seems unlikely to me...
There are however carrier specific versions of the Note based off a completely different Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset designed to work on very specific LTE networks in other parts of Asia (mainly in Korea), and AT&T is rumored to have commissioned Samsung to build them their own specific LTE version of the Note as well. HOWEVER, I would fervently recommend AGAINST buying any kind of device commissioned and built specifically for any particular carrier. ALWAYS buy unlocked devices. By buying unlocked equipment, you are taking power away from the carrier that they would otherwise have over you when it comes to your consumer choice. Not to mention all the benefits and the freedoms you should enjoy by owning your own equipment, free of any carrier imposed limitations, bloatware *ahem*CarrierIQ*ahem*, and whatever other diabolical things carriers will inevitably do to our precious equipment.
Anyway, I'm getting side-tracked here...
To get your Note fully functional, and running optimally on AT&T, it's not quite as simple as just popping your SIM card in and off you go...
The three basic things you need to do are as follows:
1. Make sure you have the correct account provisioning.
2. Configure and use the correct APN('s).
3. Disable Fast Dormancy.
I'll cover these in more detail below, but first of all I need to clarify something: the Note supports 21mbit HSPA+, which if you want to call that 4G, OK fine. Personally I try to avoid marketing catch-phrases like "3G" and "4G" altogether, so henceforth I shall refer to the Note's mobile connectivity by what it actually is: HSPA+
Now, before you're able to fully take advantage of HSPA+, you'll need to make sure that your account is properly provisioned for that feature, otherwise you'll run into a virtual speed limit which will keep your device from reaching its full speed potential. So, in order to check that you have the correct provisioning on your account, you should call in to customer service and make sure you're on a proper 4G (not LTE 4G either!) plan. Ask them if you have the correct SOC code. In my case (grandfathered unlimited data user), my SOC code should be "HSDPB." If you're on a tiered plan, it'll be something else. Either way, you need to be on a 4G plan of some sort.
"Ok, how do I do that then?"
Easy. Go to you local store and get the IMEI from a similar Samsung device (from a connectivity standpoint anyway), like an Infuse 4G, or a non-LTE Galaxy S2. From the dialer, enter in *#06#, and the IMEI should show up. Make a note of that number (hehehe). You can probably find another IMEI on the internet, too, but either way you need that. When you call in to AT&T customer support, just tell the rep that you've upgraded your device to a *insert name of device from which you got the IMEI* that you bought on eBay or something, and you want to make sure that you're on the correct plan. Provide them that IMEI, and now your account should be provisioned for HSPA+ (YAY! WOO!).
Now that that's out of the way, you need to configure your APN or APN's if you're using more than one (this only usually applies if you're grandfathered into an older plan). Go to Settings => Wireless and network => Mobile networks => Access Point Names. From here, tap the menu button and select "New APN."
Populate the fields as follows (Case sensitive!):
Name: Doesn't matter, you can call this whatever you want.
APN: Phone
Proxy: <not set>
Port: <not set>
Username: <not set>
Password: <not set>
Server: <not set>
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMSC Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <none set>
APN type: internet + mms (if you're on a tiered plan) or just internet (if you're on a legacy grandfathered plan).
This APN info above is for achieving the highest possible speeds over HSPA+
The next APN generally offers slower data speeds, but depending on your area may not be any different in terms of speed after all. This is the old legacy Cingular APN, and you need to input these settings if you're on a grandfathered legacy plan, otherwise you may not be able to send/receive MMS properly.
Name: Doesn't matter, you can call this whatever you want.

Congratulations! You should have now successfully set up both your account and your APN's properly for making your Note fully functional on AT&T! You should now at the very least be able to get onto the internet and browse etc. Pat yourself on the back!
But wait! There's more!
You still have to disable a feature on your Note called Fast Dormancy. Fortunately, this is really quick and easy to do. But first, what the hell is that, and why do I have to disable it? Well without getting all technical, simply put, it's a feature which allows a device to very quickly switch from an idle data state to UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ and back to idle again, and generally work more efficiently, thus improving performance, and saving battery life. Problem is, in order for this feature to work, BOTH the device and the network that device is on need to support it. Unfortunately, AT&T does not currently support Fast Dormancy. As a result, by having fast dormancy enabled on your device, it'll have the complete opposite effect than what it was intended to have. Basically, your battery life will suck more, data connections will be erratic, slow, and unreliable, and you're basically wasting data overhead on a feature that, for AT&T, just doesn't exist. Disable it, and your Note will fly like it was intended.
To disable Fast Dormancy, from your dialer, enter in *#*#9900#*#*
This should pull up your SysDump menu. There, close to the bottom it should indicate your current Fast Dormancy state, enabled by default. Select that option, and it should indicate that Fast Dormancy is disabled. Exit and enjoy! Reboot the phone for good measure though. You generally don't have to, but sometimes it irons out any issues that may arise.
Hope this all helps! Enjoy your Note on AT&T!!
P.S. Hey Moderators!! Can we by any chance get this tutorial posted up as a sticky? Seems to be the best way to consolidate for AT&T users. Thanks!
Thanks for this! It really made clear what all the different APN's were about (since none of them seemed to work). Now getting 4100 / 1030 as compared to 1400 / 1000.

Gotcha. Wouldn't surprise me that the pta APN wouldn't have worked, because if I'm not mistaken, I believe that's the LTE only APN anyway.
Great post !
Thx for the 4-1-1!!! This was great. However, one question, i got the skyrocket for Xmas, I put the sim in and used the 'pta' APN i found on this site. Is that OK? im gettting download speeds ~2 - 2.5. Is that what the non-LTE apn speeds are like? or should i change the IEMI number with ATT as you described and get a regular 4g plan (non LTE)? thx again

Honestly, I doubt you'll need to change your plan as such. However, I would avoid using the pta APN, mainly because it's monitored and regulated much more heavily than the other two I listed above. From what I read a few months ago on the Skyrocket forums, people on the pta APN were running into issues where they were getting throttled pretty badly, and in some cases, even if they weren't throttled, some websites were simply blocked outright. The solution was to fall back to the older APN's. Now I don't know if the issues with the pta APN have been fixed or not, but I would still avoid it on principle.
As for your average speeds on HSPA+, my understanding is that the Skyrocket falls back to 21mbit HSPA+ anyway when LTE is unavailable, so I would assume that your account provisions should already be set up to take full advantage of that on your Note. That being the case, yes, the speeds you are seeing are consistent with average/normal HSPA+ performance.
Feel free to read the link in my comment about 4 posts ago to understand a little more about what kinds of speeds to expect based on a number of environmental factors.
Thanks so much for this info. This needs a sticky!
After trying both APN's listed in this thread, im not able to fully receive MMS messages. I get a message with a download button, but the pic will not dl after touching the button.
I came from a skyrocket, in an LTE area, then used a cheap samsung gophone for a week (what misery!) while waiting on my GNote. I looked under message settings, and do have a retrival phone number, and checked "automatically download". Text mesaaging works fine. Any advice?

Get rid of all the MMS info in the wap.cingular APN, and set up a new APN with that info and call it "AT&T MMS" or something like that. When you set the type to MMS only, that APN will remain active always (no green button next to it) and you should receive MMS normally.

HTC One 64GB Developer Edition signal strength

I just received a Developer Edition 64GB HTC One. I also have in my possession the AT&T Store model. I was receiving 2 to 3 bars signal strength at home with the AT&T version, but when I started using the Developer model, I was receiving one bar.
Also noticed with the developer edition, I was moving between HSPA+ and LTE frequently and even lost signal when I went inside a store. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Is anyone having the same problem?
I don't want to return the Developer edition but signal strength is important to me and I may have to, if it comes down to it.
Bump
I am by no means the most knowledgeable person here but I was for many years an employee of at&t and in that role was part of group of people that tested pre-release devices as well as upgrades to those devices post release...
So with that I know that at&t is known to manipulate signal meters on the OS of devices as part of their "network optimization". So what that would mean is that the signal strength measurement of a device with non-at&t OS might show that -95dBm is one bar, the same device with the at&t branded OS would show two or three bars. Leading the consumer to think that they have better coverage than they do.
I am not suggesting this is for certain the case but you can probably find a reliable signal strength tool for free in the play store and load it on both and compare the actual dBm measurement and you may find that they are close to the same and that the signal meter is not as accurate.
MG
Edit: I downloaded Network Signal Info by Kaibits Software and it seems to have a lot of useful info.

Ive never worked for AT&T but this is very true. As someone who always has the latest phones (me) its very apparent when you go to CM or any other non carrier ROM that you notice how they manipulate the signal meter.
The real answer here is that there is no difference in reception, only in signal bar representation. I believe the developer edition has a bug because the range represented isn't quite correct, it bottoms out at -113 dBm while 10 MHz LTE like on ATT should bottom out at -125 dBm.
Same situation but signal is in fact lower.
I actually found this posting searching for this exact problem. I have the ATT and the Developer edition. I noticed the bar difference but as everyone has been alluding to, I just wrote it off as how signal displayed as being wrong. However, when I turned the WiFi off and was trying to use the mobile media only, it was so slow to non existent in LTE but it changed to non LTE and did have some throughput but as you experienced it kept changing around. Again, the ATT version had great throughput and speed and stayed solidly on LTE. I am sorry I do not have the solution as I am also trying to find out what is going on and as you, I do not want to return the unlocked phone. Hope we find the solution soon.

Although the ATT One did have one test with DL speed of @21 mpbs, subsequent tests were @ 5mpbs, which were the same as the Dev One.

FYI: I also ran Network Signal Info app which showed both devices picking up same signal (-85dbm), but each had different number of bars (ATT One had 4, Dev One had 2)
I have the same problem in Massachusetts. I have both phones At&t and dev. The dev can barely keep an LTE signal. The At&t is fine. Any thoughts on how to extract the radio from the At&t model and flash it on the dev model?

hmm, that's what I have. I am in NYC this week and the LTE IS pretty fast. 16mb d/l
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
No need for an app. Go to Settings > About > Network. Compare the dBm there. I am getting great LTE on my unlocked edition. Got 37 Mbps down, 18 up when I tested yesterday.
-105dBm
8.33 up
6.57 down
inside my house with ATT LTE
I work in a large office building and my previous phones had a very difficult time holding an AT&T signal.
The worse for me was the Nexus 4. Up until yesterday, I was using the Samsung S3 and it did quite a bit better.
The HTC One is doing a FANTASTIC job for me. Much better reception and 2 or 3 dBm better than the S3.
So far, no complaints.
This is making me feel a bit uneasy... I hope I don't have any problems with mine! Glad to know people are aware of it, I guess...

The signal strength is the same on both devices I have (ATT and Dev). The only difference is the way it's presented or each device's interpretation of a "good signal".
Some people were saying they have the AT&T and Developer edition and the Developer one actually dropped connections where the AT&T one held strong and was very fast. That is what scares me.
I want to make sure people are not getting caught up with signal levels in dB. I have personally spent a good amount of time testing both phones. There is several times that the DEv unit was not operating in LTE frequencies and the At&t unit was working perfectly. So I called HTC to complain. I would like everyone else to complain to HTC. They are blowing this off. There needs to be as many complaints to get this escalated. Please do not dispair about complaining to HTC thinking your phone is OK.
I had both phones for a day and, while I didn't compare signal strength (only one sim), I haven't noticed my Developer edition having any issues with signal since I took my AT&T model back.
Speeds are right where they should be and I have had no dropped calls. Maybe it's a placebo effect.
I have to say, though, even if I knew for a fact that the AT&T model consistently got better reception, I would still choose the Developer edition for the lack of bloatware, wireless tether, and factory unlocked bootloader.
We're bound to get a firmware update eventually that includes a new radio. I'm sure it will get better. Assuming that it's worse, I seriously doubt that it's hardware.

Stop spreading your lies, Walternate, or we'll take out a chunk of your brain!
My developer edition is pulling down 43.6 down and 12.8 up inside the house on AT&T LTE. Current signal strength is -81 RSRP and -7 RSRQ.
I had a problem with the Dev edition not working properly with my AT&T SIM card yesterday when the phone arrived. All the phone functions worked fine, but Data did not work at all. It gave me a message that the APN was configured wrong. (Even though it was the stock AT&T settings.)
I stopped at my local AT&T Corp store this afternoon while I was out and they swapped me into a new LTE SIM Card for free. They also checked my IMEI and I believe they added it to my account info. A quick reboot and things were working fine and flying along. Apparently some of the SIM Cards are set up for the HSPA + "4g" network and do not have something authorized for the LTE. Both my old SIM Card and the new LTE card looked exactly the same as well, so there doesn't seem to be an easy way to tell if you have the LTE Enabled card. (Obviously if you were using it with an LTE phone before you know.) I was using a Nexus 4 prior to getting my One so HSPA+ was all I had available before.

You didn't need to give AT&T your IMEI. In fact, I try to avoid this with unlocked phones. You did, however, need an LTE Sim card to get the full benefit. You could have used your old card, but you would have had to enter a different APN manually and then you would only get HSPA speeds, which would be a shame.

Slow Download Speeds on T-Mobile

*** Caution***
I may have found a bug in the 4.4 software... I am not 100% sure, but it has T-Mobile perplexed beyond belief!
So, here is the issue. Without being on Wifi try downloading any file from the app store or any large file in general that is 100MBs and up.
From what I have noticed, my HSPA+ Speeds and LTE speeds are insane. Insane enough that I can stream Netflix in HD like its nothing - Over the phone.
So, in a way that makes things look even more weird. --- Here is the issue at hand, whenever I try to download a file that is over 100MBs or more the download will start out fast
and after a few minutes of download slow down ( basically get totally reduced to Throttling-Like speeds.)-- Same case with the tethering too! ( I tested this) This does not make sense, --- Comedy Here. http://youtu.be/6Xywqv1cDH8
So, I called up T-Mobile and they tried very hard to help me... it was actually insane because the customer service was so damn good. I got all the way up to American Tech Rep... guess it was that interesting, the guy reset my connection to my phone while we ran multiple speed tests. --- End result was that he could not figure out what the hell it was, and since NEXUS 5s are so new they don't know a lot about them. The tech had to send a trouble ticket to google or what not and I won't hear from the tech for 3 days.
It doesn't make much sense because I just got on their network like on the 9th... only used less than 3 GBs... -_- and IF they throttle its after 5GBs.
So if you are with T-Mobile or with a company in America and NOT on a Grandfathered plan post a quick result or kinda verify that your unit is or is not performing the same way. This is a very annoying issue.
ALSO, I am on the Unlimited verified Post-Paid plan too... so monthly and this is supposed to give cell tower priority.. or something.
If anyone has a way for me to fix this or is having similar issues let me know!
I'm having similar problems on giffgaff (o2) in the UK.

BUMP! Seriously I can't be the only one.
I am getting the same great speeds that I got on 2 other phones. And I use about 5-8 gigs a month without any throttling. On T-Mobile.

I ran these tests, but that won't help you unless you really pay attention and watch your download slow down.
You need to try downloading an app or any file above 100 MB and see if it totally slows down within the first few minutes.
Mine does this ALL the time.. Meaning, It won't do that if I am on Wifi.
As stated, I stared my service on the 9th of this month... so its Bull DOO DOO!

I've had this problem with tmobile ever since I used the LTE hack on my N4 well over 6 months a go. I noticed it when i was on the APN with fast in it. The old HSPA+ one I was using before the LTE APN didn't have these problems. I know this doesn't help, but I've just accepted it as working as intended.

I might have the same issue and I'm on T-Mobile. I'm downloading a 221MB game app at 23% completion with 7 hours left to complete the download
That 23% downloaded quick and now it's slowly downloading.
With one bar of LTE, indoors, (where my galaxy nexus couldn't get HSPA) I pulled 4.57Mbps down with two notable spikes on Ookla speedtest. I got 0.00up. I'll re-download 3d mark when I'm out and about. (It's 155mb) I also contribute background stats to Root Metrics Coverage Map. If your phone is rooted, consider playing with your TCP congestion control in Trickster mod or the like.

Same issue here OP so you're not alone.
Nexus 5 on T-Mobile, I have a super strong LTE signal at work but downloading anything from the playstore, like you say starts out fast 1.5-2MB/s then it goes down to a crawl after 70-100MB and basically seems to time out. I have to wait to go home to finish downloading on my WiFi connection. It's terrible and inconvenient to have to wait to go home to update a large application.
I am on T-Mobile and just downloaded Dead Trigger 2. Had the same speed through out the download and completed very quickly. I am not running a stock rom and maybe that is the issue?
I am on pre-paid. I noticed with tests it'll get to like 30Mbps at start, lag spike a few times, then finish at 4Mbps. I can't get upload to finish.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yep i have this exact issue, i can have full bars on LTE and it starts out at 30mbps then slows down to a crawl, like 2G speed. The only way i found to kick it is to switch to a wifi network then switch back to LTE, and it starts out fast again then slows down again. I'm on a postpaid plan with unlimited 4G.

EVERYONE I made a video with proof!
See it here! : Everything I am talking about is there..
http://youtu.be/2i3_lWWCJwg
The issue isn't just the app store, but downloads in general!
Another thing you will notice is if you are watching a movie via the Netflix app you will have super high quality meaning the connection isn't loosing speed.
Still want to point out that tethered downloads have the same issues.
Testing this right now by starting a download of Dead Trigger 2.
Well that didn't take long. At the 24mb mark I got throttled down to 0.02 mb/sec.
I have the exact same issue and am so glad you brought it up. Now I know I'm not alone.
I came from a htc one s and had similar issue. I thought it was the phone modem itself because the radio on that phone is a POS. Now with the Nexus 5,whenever I download a big file, it would start out with around 2 to 3 mb/s. And after a minute a two it would drop to low speed ranging from 15 to 150kb/s, constantly fluctuating.
Has anyone tested this on another phone? Maybe it's a t-mobile issue and not the phone itself.

My Galaxy S6's data speeds are terrible

So I've had the S6 since release and I've been on T-Mobile since January 2014. I've had the Xperia Z1S, Nexus 5, LG G3, iPhone 6, and now the S6, and I never had problems with my data speeds/reception till I got this phone. It drops more calls, has 5 bars but has barely usable data speeds, and it just outright sucks. I never really noticed because I'm on WiFi usually, but this time I went on vacation to Clearwater, Florida which has great reception for T-Mobile customers, and having no WiFi was seriously painful using this phone. I should also note that I have to constantly re-send messages even when I have 2-3 bars as they fail.
Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do to fix the issue?
I'm running the stock ROM with no root or anything other than using Nova Launcher Prime btw.
Thanks.

Last month 1 GB (I have a 3 GB plan) and this month I used 3, but I started using data from my data stash so that shouldn't matter. It's not throttling, I would know the difference.

If you think he is being throttled, remember he also has to resend messages, which sounds like a radio problem. Some devices simply have bad radios, and there is nothing that can be done besides exchanging it.
If you were on a custom rom (especially based on the international S6), this would be sorta expected because some roms don't have the correct T-Mobile APN. But rooted stock should not be having these issues.
This is what I would do. Go to your nearest T-Mobile store and explain the situation to a rep. Then ask the rep to do a network speed test on his phone, then do the same test on your S6 and show him the crappy results. Then ask him if he would be happy with the results. When he shakes his head no, ask him to exchange the phone.

Oh okay, I was thinking you had the unlimited plan and went over the 10 gb mark. A few months ago Tmobile started "prioritization" which means if you used 10+gb and it's "peak hours" they kick you to the back of the line to get data. Sorry I can't help you hope you find a answer.

Let's pretend he is being throttled or prioritised just for this question. Would having volte turned on change your answer? I think volte kicks on based on 4g reception not data speeds.

If so, then every person with a T-Mobile S6 with VoLTE enabled should have crappy download speeds and problems sending messages. I don't see that being the case.

Not really, it's only the major offenders in high usage areas getting hit right now but I could see somebody slipping through the cracks. Obviously this isn't the case for the op because he doesn't have unlimited.

Not sure about the radio but you can reset the apn, you might need to create a new apn before the option is avaliable. I have the default apn and a ipv4 apn, if I click on more in the apn selection window I have a reset option.

Sometimes after creating a apn you need to reselect lte/wcdma/gsm under network mode.
*edit*
Should probably note that dun is no longer needed in the apn and hipri probably won't help data speed in fact it might hurt speeds depending on how tmobile handles it.

same problem here, on original s6 and replacement s6 :-/
I'm not sure if it's because the 5.1.1 update is rolling out or not but today my service is HORRIBLE. Everywhere I usually get full bars full 4G LTE...I'm getting either EDGE or no service at all. Rebooting, toggling airplane mode, etc... no fix for me. Any one else?
