Hello there
After experienced many times upgrading rom from stock firmware to ICS custom, I have a trick for myself and want to share it to you all! That is how to boot into an ICS rom without appearance of kernel splash screen
** Note: This trick is useful with AT&T bootloader only, i've tested with i9k bootloader but unsuccessful.
What needed:
1. Eclair stock firmware: (needed if you're on any custom rom, if you're using stock then don't need to load this one) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
2. Speedmod kernel (to get CWM): this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880 ---> download speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz.tar in attachments box at the bottom of post #1.
3. Elite 10.1 for Captivate (must have): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567102
4. Your favorite rom, or if Elite is good enough to you, then you don't need to download anymore! Don't forget to put these rom into your Cappy sdcard!
Here's the sequence of work:
Again, if you're on stock rom without CWM, then ignore step 1 and jump to step 2!
1. Download mode --> Odin --> back to stock Eclair with AT&T boot loader
2. Download mode --> Odin --> flash Speedmod kernel to get Clockwork Mod Recovery, by putting the file speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz.tar you've loaded above into PDA box in Odin, then Start and wait till completed
3. Recovery mode --> Install .zip file of Elite 10.1 ROM, wait till finished and you can boot into Elite successfully. You can ignore this booting process if you don't want to use this ROM, by taking battery pack out!
4. Recovery mode --> Flash your favourite rom and kernel in your usual way (wipe cache, dalvik or full wipe)
5. Reboot and you will see, Cappy shows only the AT&T splash screen and never lets any kernel have a chance to show its own logo!
I've tested with these ROM: CM9 nightly, SlimICS, ICSSGS with exact steps above and the results are the same: great! I've not tried with AOKP yet, but I think it should work!
If anyone try this with AOKP and everything's ok, plz comment so that I'll update into this post!
Hope it helps many Cappy's owners!
this seems stupid
i would rather get rid of the AT&T logo from booting than the kernel splash screen
Ahh then you can use i9000 bootloader!

Here's your topic: [MOD] Custom Boot Screen (for Gingerbread ROM's)
I attached a param.lfs tar for UCKF1 stock rom
no Eclair for my replacement phone
Ever since I got a replacement phone (by AT&T warranty) I cannot install Eclair 2.1 using Odin into it.
I can only use the Odin for going back to 2.2 and 2.3
If I install 2.1 on it I get a bootloop and sometimes it bricks - only a jig can get it back to life.
Do you think this will work with 2.2 ?

I think it's possible. I used to upgrade to ICS from 2.3.5 stock rom with AT&T bootloader and this trick was useful that time. So firstly, u should try to do this trick directly on ur stock 2.2. I believe it will work! But if it won't, u need to upgrade to 2.3, then do the same process!

Thanks. Maybe it's better for me just to try is from 2.3 stock right away and not to bother with 2.2
Anyway, I'll try it if I ever have to go back to stock for any reason.
This kernel splash screen doesn't bother me it it's nice to know how to remove it

well, i have had some issues flashing my phone to 2.3, and it is currently on continuum v5.5 working fine for a few versions. so i don't want to rush into anything and mess it up again, but i want to try another rom. im a little confused to what all i need to do to get the new phoenix rom on coming from a talon kernel.
thanks!
Just use ODIN ONE CLICK STOCK (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 and then place the rom of ur choice and flash it in CWM!! tell me if u need anything else
Odin back to stock and follow instructions in the OP for the Pheonix thread.
You need to verify that your current installed kernel is compatible with your new rom of choice.
If not:
1. Find one that is compatible, install it via odin without rebooting - then boot to recovery and install the zip file in cwm.
OR
2. Odin one click to stock and go from scratch.
If going from GB to GB rom then the important thing is the kernel compatibility or you will likely go into bootloop. Other than that wipe, reset and install.
Hello,
I own a I-897 Captivate model, and I had a custom 2.3.4 gignerbread rom recently..
Latley I tried to move to cognition becuase the other rom did problems for me..
So I followed the guide, and when I first flashed the kernel I wasn't using any pit file..
So it's just stuck on odin with nothing happening, so I closed odin and rebooted my phone.
Then the phone showed me a logo with phone and computer with X between them.
So I flashed again using the pit then I got to the recovery, where I tried to install the cognition 5.2 without succes, it finished the install, but when I rebooted it just kept switching between the boot screen of AT&T and Galaxy S GT I9000..
So I tried to use my Nandroid backup, but it just won't work, I tried to install it manually and still it isn't working..
So I tried to instal my previous rom and succeeded, but now when I reboot it it just loading the Talon logo, finishes it and stuck on the end of the loading without any action...
So, I can use the download mode and odin.
What should I do?
Thank you very much.
What build number is your phone

Please I beg you to stop what you're doing and just Read, Read like your life depends on it and keep reading till you can flash with utter confidence least you permanently brick your Cappy.

I have read tons of time,
I tried to install Cyanogenmod, but it seems when I get to the recovery it doesn't work..
I flashed the recovery through CWM, but its very limited and blue not bright green or yellow as always.
I only got 4 options:
Reboot
Re-Install packges
Wipe user data
Wipe cahce
How do I get my recovery work properly?
That's not CMW that's the regular 3e recovery. You'll need to flash a kernel with CMW built in or one with an alternate recovery (I usually use an Onix kernel)

I've flashed a full gingerbread stock rom, with boot loaders and it works fine,
but now I can't get to the download mode, so I cant flash the rooted kernel..
I'm stucked unrooted, How can I root it?
It's Gingerbread 2.3.3 UCKF1 Build stock rom.
Pull out your battery, Sim, and SD card. Plug your usb cable into a usb port on the back of your computer then plug it into your phone. Hold volume up and down then reinsert your battery, should boot into download mode.

Hi guys,
i just got a Galaxy S (international, germany) and wanted to flash Clockwork Mod so i can flash a custom rom (miui). I got it with version 2.2 so i rooted it with z4root 1.3 and then tried RomManager to get CWM on it. But it did always reboot into Samsung stock recovery mode. So i tried this Odin3 1.7 and flashed a Kernel and got into a bootloop (First this one, then i used the one promoted in this video (YouTube Video, description XDA Thread with promoted Kernel. Phone now stuck at booting (isn`t even bootlooping, just stuck at the GALAXY S GT etc. logo. I still can reach the Download Mode.
Can anyone please help how to get at least the phone working again I`m really desperatly.
Greetings from Germany & Merry Christmas

Install a new Rom with odin will make your phone boot again.
2.2 is probably too old now.
Upgrade to Gingerbread Stock using Odin. Turn on Repartition and follow the instructions to flash.
Download a Custom Kernel for the Gingerbread firmware that you flashed. Every Kernel except the stock comes with CWM Recovery.
Copy the MIUI zip file to sdcard and flash it with recovery. It should boot right up.
If you are still having bootloops, try doing a factory reset and then boot MIUI.
Don't try things that you aren't experienced with.
Anyway, download odin 1.85, flash stock Froyo, launch Kies, update to official Gingerbread, launch Odin, flash Semaphore Kernel and GG.
Merry Christmas!
How can i flash Stock Froyo/Gingerbread trough Odin? Can`t find anything usefull @ google
btw i can reach Recovery Mode (CWM / Speedmonk something)
(Kinda experienced by flashing around with my N1 for around 2 years now, but never heard about this Odin Program)
thanks for help anyway

I am not going to help you with this one. You need to get comfortable with the forum and its contents first. Read all the guides and stickies before proceeding with Firmware flashing. There are many different types of firmwares with Bootloaders which are often dangerous to flash and few without bootloaders. Hence, first go through the guides and go with the flashing only when you are confident that you are doing everything in right order.

Just do what dhiru1602 says. after you flashed it with the latest Gingerbread ,
flash the cf-root kernel with odin . than download the latest galaxian/semaphore kernel, copy it to your internal sd-card and flash it with the app SGS Kernel Flasher . you can find that app on the market. good luck mate !
Thanks guys, u really saved christmas for me Just booted up the latest Miui Rom!
Happy Holidays

[email protected],
after successfully flashing CM9 to my Defy I convinced my friend to go to ICS as well...so far so good/bad!
I followed the guide to install CMW recovery and did a backup of the stock ROM.
After this I copied CM9 nightly and the google apps package to the internal memory...apperantely the zip package of the google apps was bad, so i tried to boot into CM9..it took a damn long time, so I removed the battery (OK, bad move...but so be it don't bit*h about it!)..CM9 booted but said someting about "encryption of the storage failed..please do a factory wipe"......I did so, using CWM recovery...which ended me up in a boot loop without having access to CMW recvry.
So I thought, flashing the zImage again with heimdall will have the bootloader rewritten (maybe the 2nd bad move this day) so I can access recovery again...I imagined zImage was kinda like a BIOS of a PC...apparently it is NOT
After some google-f00 I found out I have to flash an official FW from samsung, with repartitioning, using odin, am I right?
But the probel is, that they tell me to do a *#7465625# to find out details about the stock firmware...but this is not bossible because the phone hangs at the galaxy s boot logo.
So my question is...what can I do to access either recovery or the stock firmware with a phone stuck at boot logo (i can boot into download mode) and having only a nandroid backup of the stock rom?
Can anybody tell me what to do without spending 200 coins to obtain another SGS for my friend (Yeah, I told him that the risk is to brick the SGS, but I have a kind of guilty conscience.
Hope someone can help...
Thanks a lot!
Odin doesnt care about whats currently on your phone . Just go to samfirmware. Com, find a nice stock rom (2.3.3) for i9000, and flash it with odin. If you dont know how to use odin: use the search button in the i9000 section ''how to use odin''. keep us updated / or if you have any other questions

hey
when i screwed my sgs, odin + darky ressurection rom helped
i can't post a link , google "Darkys_v9.2_Resurrection_Edition.zip" ,though i can't remember if i used that version. some got removed, try to look for a sourceforge link. That still works
and see the reply above how to use odin
Hey,
There are also lots of tutorials on youtube, and other sites to show how to flash an original rom. I also screwed up my install of CM9. And then I followed this guide to get the original rom running again.
w w w.theandroidsoul.com/download-install-xxjvs-firmware-update-galaxy-s-i9000-to-android-2-3-5/
After that, use this link for rooting + CWM:
w w w.theandroidsoul.com/root-xxjvs/
Greets from Holland !
PS: can't link -_- so you have to copy and paste the URL.

hmmm... i read from another site there are some custom rom that requires the phone to be in a rooted stock rom or another custom rom...
example:
to install Galaxy S GT I9000 with Orange Amestris v7.3 ROM Custom Firmware you need to be on stock XWJW1 or XXJVU Firmware since the baseband of "amestris" would be on xwjw1 or xxjvu or custom rom with the same baseband...
what stock rom/firmware the phone was in anyway?im guessing gingerbread stock rom? you still got a chance to update it right since you can access download mode...
from what i can remember, i updated my boyfrnd's s2 from gingerbread to official ics from "sammobile".com (remove quote)
then updated it to a custom rom...
well this might be irrelevant but this is how i updated my galaxy s:
well on my galaxy s i updated it from gingerbread stock rom rooted to gingerbread miui then to ics miui andy's version, since im on ics i have successfully tried different ics custom rom like darknight, slimics, elite etc...
hope this kinda help =]
Thanks a lot...I flashed the original firmware (it didn't start properly, but I don't care) and with this was able to flash the zImage again...then I was able to access bootloader and reinstall CM9
hello,
i bought a fresh n7000 with stock ics firmware on it. i wanted to go to paranoid android.
1. i rooted the stock ics
2. found out that i need gingerbread to flash custom firmware
3. installed sdk, driver on ubuntu
4. installed heimdall, as its the odin for linux
5. downloaded N7000XXKJ4 from samfirmware.com
6. extracted it to have the single images to flash with heimdall 1.3.1
7. booted in download mode, attached the phone to usb and hitted detect device in heimdall
8. device was found
9. started flashing, first without repartition
boot.img as BOOT
param.lfs as PARAM
factoryfs.img as FACTORYFS
cache.img as CACHE
zImage as KERNEL
Sbl.bin as SBL1
hidden.img as HIDDEN
modem.bin as MODEM
10. flashing went all thru, the phones screen showed the progress also
11. phone did a reboot, after all flashing was done
12. stuck at bootscreen
13. found in the web that its normal and i should do a factory reset in the recovery (its not cwm)
14. stuck at bootscreen
15. repeated step 9. with pit file and repartition
16. same bootscreen
i know the phone is not dead, just not booting, but i have absolutely no chance to find out what to flash exactly and how to do it.
hm could i now just flash the abyss kernel and cwm recovery.bin or so and install a custom rom?
if you are now on GB then flash a kernel, either in CWM or odin and do a full factory reset along with all caches and dalvik cache.
i wouldnt recommend flashing a custom ROM until the stock rom is booting, you dont want to be covering up any underlying errors.
Also, Why did you re-partition ? Did you re-partition using a 3 file firmware (PDA, CSC, Phone) or just a single firmware - PDA ??
hm i dont know on what i am, because it doesnt boot.
i thought i eventually had to repartition because i changed from 4.0 to 2.3.5 ... i used the n7000 16gb pit file.
Well what did ODIN say ? Did it complete or did it get stuck and fail ?
You can flash a kernel in ODIN which should allow you to enter CWM and do a wipe, However you might get issues if you flash a GB kernel over ICS Firmware and vice versa
heimdall ran complete through, said its all fine and the phone rebooted at the end of flashing as it should be. seems all perfect.
the issues i get can not be worse?! if i would now flash a gb kernel, even if there is ics under the hood, the phone would also just not boot?!
I dont know really, Ive never tried, nor do i intend to lol.
But i imagine GB is now on your phone considering it all passed without fail So i guess you should try to flash a kernel and then do a full wipe and see if it boots then
chances are there are some ICS files left on the system preventing it from booting.
and following the guides on xda im not allowed to flash the other kernel with heimdall/odin.
i should use the cf-kernel for my firmware and flash it with the bat-script, is this correct?
Just flash this in ODIN and you will be fine
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69014495/GingerBread-speedmod-kernel-n7000-k2-12-Odin.tar
boot into recovery, do a factory reset, then clear cache partition, then go to advanced and clear dalvik cache, then reboot
then report back
ok. now i have the yellow triangle. i wanted to avoid this.
BUT it looks very promising. clockword mod is starting. did the wipes. and when i reboot it boots directly in cwm. i think this is good atm.
i have to leave at work now. tomorrow morning i can flash a rom with cwm right? and if i flash an ics rom, then i have to flash a ics kernel, too?!
Dont worry about the triangle, Use this app to remove it https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69014495/eu.chainfire.triangleaway-47fe5bbd55070e4eddce741c0ef13110.apk
Like i said above, Make sure the phone boots before flashing any other ROMs. If you want to upgrade to ICS you will need to flash ICS in ODIN, Unless you want to use a CM9 / AOSP based ROM like Paranoid Android, In this case you will stay on GB, Just full wipe and flash ROM in CWM
EDIT: I mis read your post, Your phone is not booting, But only booting into CWM, In this case, try a custom ROM, Nothing to extreme just a simple GB ROM and see if it boots properly then
thanks so much!
flashed checkrom notehd via cwm. boots clean and nicely up.
i flashed/rooted some phones before htc hero, hd2, zte blade. but none of them, even the hd2 with its windows conversion was as unclear as the n7000. i think because in former times the developers wherent as many as actual, and there were much less guides/tuts/howtos which made an user less unsecure.
nevertheless, your support is gorgeous: friendly, fast and ultracompetent.
