OK, after following the well worn mantra of "If it ain't broke, fix it until it is", I have found myself in an odd position.
My phone only lasted in stock format for around 45 minutes when I bought it about 8 months ago. It was rooted and flashed straight away and has been working well ever since. However, last night I decided to fiddle about with a few things and found myself in a bit of a pickle where I was S-On with the **security warning** error at boot. After a few heart stopping moments and 5 minutes of reading I was able to resolve this and revert my phone back to stock running 2.3.3 and Sense 2.1. To be honest, this had been where I'd been planning to get to but not quite by the route I took but hey-ho, I got there in the end.
Anyway, I know I can simply re-root my phone etc and flash a new rom etc but I wanted to play with the phone in stock format for a while so I could get some comparisons against what I was familiar with in custom roms.
After the usual boot up and adding in gmail account details etc, everything was up and running. I launched Market and expected things to start happening but other than getting a handful of updates to stock items nothing else happened - more specifically, Market did not update to Google Play. No matter how many times I went in and out it stayed as the very old Market.
I then tried to get any OTA updates (of which I know for a fact there is at least one) but my phone reports that it is up to date and no updates are available.
So, while I know I can go back to custom roms I still want to have a play with a truly stock phone - but not quite such an old one. Does anybody have any suggestions about how I can kickstart my phone to get it to the state it 'should' be in with the latest version of GB and Play?

OK, I'm downloading this now and will give it a whirl. I'd still like to try and figure out why my phone won't update from its current state. It is a Virgin AU phone and I used their RUU to flash it so it is essentially back to the state I got it out of the box.

Ok so I got my hero about a month ago and upgraded to 2.1 last week. Terrible decision...wish I could take it back...but I hear that if you root your phone and use a custom ROM you can actually have a pretty decent experience with your phone using 2.1 I can't even list how many problems and how slow 2.1 is.
I do not know a lot at all about rooting a phone, I never have before, and the tutorials on unlocker seem to be out-dated with the 1.5 software so nothing is working for me. I have the ADP setup on my computer, I'm just wondering what's the easiest and most up to date way to root my Sprint HTC Hero so I can use a custom ROM. Any help is appreciated, thank you.
**If your software/build number (2.27.651.X) ends in 6, you must download and run this RUU first to be able to use the root exploit on your phone. If it ends in .5, skip this and click the link in the next sentence.**
Try this and if you follow it correctly, you'll be able to root your phone and be able to nandroid, and flash custom roms and what not.
Final note, all of the user data/settings on your phone will be reset, so it will be like having a brand new phone out of the box. Just an FYI.
Thank you I have successfully rooted my phone...but I'm having trouble connecting to the internet now. I cannot receive any weather data and have no internet connection at all.
I"m having the same problem, even after I set back to factory default. Not sure what I did wrong.

What problem(s) are you having in particular? Not being able to root?
I had my phone rooted and it worked great then my phone was stolen. When the replacement came in I rooted it first thing with fresh 2.1.2 but my phone would not receive or make calls.
So then I had to run the 1.5 RUU to get back to stock thinking I was going to have to get some warrant work. Well that bricked my phone getting the 110 error that many other seem to get too.
I found the fix, and opened command prompt and ran fastboot oem boot. This fixed my phone and I was back running 1.5
After testing my phone, I seen that it made calls with not problem and it was the fresh rom that was messing my phone up. I decided I would not root my phone again, instead just install the 2.1 update. I tried to update through the phone but it did not work so I downloaded the 2.1 RUU and ran it.
I've been using the 2.1 update now for a week and I am unsatisfied. It is incredibly slow compared to my rooted phone. I tried using fresh kitchen to root my phone but it says I have a custom room and fails. (I thought running the 2.1 RUU was like a factory update?)
Anyways, is there a way for my to root my phone again? I am stuck and not sure what to do.
Sorry for the wall of text.
so u found the fix for the 110 error but u cant see like the third topic here on how to root 2.1?
Damn, haha, Thanks for pointing that out.
I'm hungover at work, you got to cut me a little slack. My head is else where today.
I'm having a lot of issues with my phone running horribly and whenever I plug it into my computer it tells me that my internal storage needs to be scanned and fixed. So either my card needs to be formatted or it's going bad. I'm assuming this could also be the cause of my phone some time taking ~10 minutes to turn on. So I have a few questions:
1) can I completely format my card and still have stock experience for exchanging it? *I went ahead and did this because I'm impatient. seems to be working and I'll keep testing it and go from there*
2) I did root and flash custom roms on it before but the rom i'm running now is a flash of the original rom on my phone but rooted. Then I updated to JH7 and it got rid of the root. When I went into the store previously and had issues with it, the guy mentioned that I had a different IMEI from what they had registered. I'm not sure if this is due to the fact of flashing or if it's from having to get the first captivate exchanged for another one. Are there any steps I can take to ensure that everything is in correct order and there's no way to see that anything has been tampered with.
Any other advice on things that should be done before going to a ATT warranty store would be greatly appreciated.

1) yes
2) Flash back to 2.1 using ODIN and you should have everything stock including your IMEI. Not JH7 but JF6.
Hopefully you backed up your stick settings prior to flashing. Sine custom roms change your product code and imei. Flashing with ODIN will not fix the product code. I'd the imei is correct I highly doubt that the tech and the DSC knows about checking the product code but you never know. Search around XDA there has been plenty of posts surrounding this topic.

So I got fed up with the phone as it was and updated it to the info above. I have never done this before and just did it following the info instructions on droidhive. Didnt do anything more than back up contacts and downloaded the ICS leak and installed it with out bootstrap this or bootloader that or anything. Probably did more than I should have as I dont undertand anything about rooting or ROMS or anything else.
Now my understanding from reading here is when and if Verizon does a OTA upgrade I will not either 1) recieve notification nor 2) be able to download it is that correct? I also cannot go back to my old build since I didnt , insert magic special thing I should have downloaded or installed prior to me updating, is that correct also? Can I do further upgrades that I have been reading about on this forum as written and in theory if I follow the instructions should be ok? or do I need to go back to the old build (if possible) then work my way back up?
I probably should have left well enough alone but I was getting so pissed with my phone and I tell you since I upgraded to that leak it runs very nice with a few hiccups when I try and run different apps. Figure if I screw it up too bad I can always get the Samsung Siii...and not mess with it...thanks for entertaining this newb!!
Take a look at this thread. It shows how to get back to .905, or to go to newer versions without losing your data. As of right now, I suggest going with the .232 leak, which is the latest you can go to while still being able to return your phone to gingerbread.

I agree.. if you are running 223 right now.. i would stick with it till the ota. You might not recieve notification but either way, you will be able to dl the image and load it the same was as you did with 223. seeing as how it will be signed it shouldn't be a problem. I have been running 223 for a few days now and overall i'm very happy with it. i just wish that i could turn the 4g off sometimes because it's a beast on the battery in my area..
I'm Loving the .223 update. It has made my Bionic into the phone Verizon should have provided me from day one!!! It isn't perfect, but it is darn good, miles, yards, acres, even years ahead of Gingerbread.

Guys still running above on the phone but have read of some upgrade/ROMs that I'd like to do, but it says I need to be rooted and I never rooted even when I did the upgrade shown above. Everything Im reading on how to root is assuming Im on the stock GB does it matter that Im not on GB and I still can do it on ICS the same way? Please advise on steps to root it now so I can continue upgrading and installing ROMS...thanks!
ok I'm new to android I mucked around with the cw recovery methord for rooting a while back and have have forgotten what exactly I did to the device. Ie I had added a few apps by side loading before i took the back up , however that pc died and I remember it was a real pain setting up adb to do it.
I have a couple of questions if I do the hard factory reset does it go back to being completely stock?
Also was there a 2.6 upgrade for the British version? mine says 2.5 , if so is there anything worth having in the 2.6 and how do I force it to do an ota upgrade to it? The default stock rom version on the dev thread seems to be an american one as it has services that are not available outside the USA.
Its not important that I will lose all the content etc.
Thanks

If you don't care about content, then the easiest way to get the latest is to force a reset by stopping the boot 8 times in a row. It will factory reset to 2.0.0 and then update to the latest when you register. Then you can add root or Play Store with my CWM zips linked in my signature.
