I was trying to root/upgrade a captivate for a friend...
Had trouble, ended up restored to 2.1...rooted it and got into cwm, tried to load NYX ICS and phone would boot then black screen and I could hear the boot sounds...
Tried restore back to 2.1 and now I have the phone dots computer screen. I can get to download mode, but odin doesn't seem to want to work...
Any tips/tricks/ideas?

Sounds like to me you didn't have gingerbread bootloaders installed, instead had enclair bootloaders, you need to be on 2.3 gingerbread bootloaders to flash ICS. Try doing an odin one-click flash from here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
Using the kk4 odin with bootloaders, I would remove the external sdcard and the sim card first, just to be sure.
But flashing bootloaders you can hard brick your phone and it will need to get jtagged.
Read the forums and understand what you are doing.
As always, I am not responsible if this messes up your phone.
Good luck
Thanks, downloading now...Yeah I figured out the bootloader part afterward...guess I needed to do more reading before I jumped in...
Odin recognizes the phone, but then seems to hang on DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!. It does setup connection, initialization, then set pit file first...so it seems to be working...I am going to leave it for a long while and see.
How long should it take?

Read the instruction in the op (original post) as to what to do. You will need to flash a kernel with clockwork mod.

I am confident following those directions. I was basically wondering if I was at the point of being able to follow them?

Assuming you are running gingerbread with gingerbread bootloaders and you can get CWM, then yes.

Hi, I have a SS/ATT Galaxy S. It was working fine. I made the mistake of running an update to change the ATT splash screen. The device boots to the ATT splash screens and stays there. You can hear the SS start up sounds as though the unit booted ok.
I've tried various Odins they all hang on file analysis. I've tried using different computers per the recommendations in the various threads. I've tried many of the one click and also separate file updaters. They all hang on file analysis.
I am able to use Droid explorer to view the device. I've also put a new update.zip on an sd card but nothing seems to change the splash screen.
I'm not sure how to tell what version the unit is currently on.
I can get to the 3 button state. It says Android System recovery <2e>.
I have the options to reboot, reinstall packages, delete all user data and delete cache data. I've tried each of them, no change.
I have tried to read many threads before bothering anyone. Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks
if you have the update.zip on your phone, in the root of your SD card.. then from 2eRecovery, select reinstall packages.. may have to do it twice. That will boot your phone into clockworkmod recovery.. and from there you should be able to mount storage- put a ROM on your device, flash and be good to go.
Reply to thread
Hi, Thanks for the fast response. I've tried update.zip on both an sd card and also via droid explorer, about 5 times. If I reboot, same thing, the ATT splash is there, and the Galaxy boot sound. I can get into recovery and droid explorer works. If I try Odin it hangs on file analysis. Anything else I can try? Thanks again.
Are you in dl mode when you try this, or recovery?
The phone is now bricked. I was in recovery mode as I saw the 3 button posts on holding the up/down and pwr. I just tried it with dl mode and odin3 and bricked it.(based on another forum's input to check repartition I think). Now it won't boot at all but I'm still able to get to dl mode but not sure what to run to fully recover.

If you can get to dl mode try using AIO Captivate to flash back to stock 2.1. I've had success as I flashed with the partition checked and had to go all the way back using ODIN contained in the AIO Captivate program. Found here

Yeah if you can get into download mode than you are not bricked. I would Odin or Heim back to JF6 and go from there. What happened when you tried reinstalling packages from 2e? I know you said everytime you reboot- but what did it say when selected reinstall packages?

Now on to some real ROM flashing!! Glad you got it working. I did almost the same thing and was sweating bullets.
Yeah, it was quite scary. I actually purchased some 100k resistors on Ebay but didn't need to make the jig.
Can you recommend a good set of f/w to load? Is it worth it to move to 2.3?
Cheers...

+1.
I had to make a jig when I soft bricked it. Not fun. Since then I purchased one and am glad I did.
Well, that means I won't have wasted my $2.00.
I saw this and thought it worth to try. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8
In your footer, it says you're using mosaic.
e.g. ROM: Mosaic III, ¤Kernel: Xcal's #14, ¤Modem: JK4, ¤Launcher: ADW Ex
Can you point me to the correct files/process? I guess I'm scared of screwing it up again. when I look on the forum there's almost too much info for a noob to choose which is best. Cheers...

If you can get to download mode, you're not out of luck. Go to the ODIN3 One-click and you should be able to get yourself back to a stock state where you can start clean.
Quick warning - if the rom you were trying to flash had the GB bootloaders, be extremely careful. The one-click above will overwrite the bootloaders, and if something comes unplugged during that time, you will be in need of JTAG service.

Very true. I've seen several people use the wrong one, and the naming convention of ODIN3 and ODIN 3-Button doesn't really help that.
How can I know which bootloader I have. I'm on the latest CM7 nightly, but I have no idea if I have AT&T froyo, GB, i9000 or whatever...
Is there any way I can know which one I have?
Have you ever flashed bootloaders or KF1 or an I9000 rom? If not then you are on eclair/froyo boot loaders.
Well when you boot up the phone do you have the ATT screen? That would narrow it down to either the froyo/eclair bootloaders or the i897 gingerbread bootloaders. If you have a i9000 bootscreen then you probably have the i9000 gingerbread bootloaders.
Second the froyo/eclair and i897 gingerbread bootloaders use the Volume+/Volume- plus Power to get into recovery screen. And Volume+/Volume- plus plugging in USB cable while connected to comouter to get into DOWNLOAD mode.
The i9000 bootloaders you would use Volume+ button and Power for recovery and Volume- and Power button for download mode.
SO after these hints you would need to KNOW if you EVER flashed i9000 or i897 gingerbread bootloaders ever. I would THINK you would know as it is a different method kind of when flashing the bootloaders.
There is no other way to confirm one way or another really easily, other than either of the gingerbread bootloaders will let you flash froyo roms, i897 gingerbread roms, and i9000 gingerbread roms. Which you would not be able to do if you were on the stock froyo/eclair bootloaders.

Well I bought the phone from ebay, and it had CM7 already, all I have been doing is just updating the nightlies, but I have no idea which bootloader it has.
When I boot it up, an AT&T screen shows up, then a screen which says "Galaxy S Cyanogen(mod)" and then the cm7 animated boot.
Because I bought it from eBay, I have no idea which bootloader it has.
Id recommend flashing to stock (if you are changing roms) flashing ATT's gingerbread bootloaders and then flash w/e you want. Thats what i would do.

HELP!
I successfully did the Odin 1-click to STOCK eclair, and it booted to eclair.
Then I tried to install the GB bootloaders from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129821
But when I clicked start, it said FAIL at boot.bin and I thought I had hard-bricked it (OMG) but I ran the odin 1 click to stock and it revived.
So why did that error happened, what should I do then to install the GB bootloaders?

Nonono, I mean that I actually got into Download Mode with the method you said, and then I flashed the bootloader with Odin, but after that, the phone booted into recovery mode, I clicked on "Reboot system" and I'm again on the stock eclair. I should have the gingerbread bootloader now right?
Should I now install the stock KH3 (no bootloader), or how can I check that the GB bootloaders installed correctly?

I’ve got an AT&T Captivate got stuck in a boot loop running CM7. I re-installed éclair to take advantage of 2e recovery. Rooted it, and intended to put a version of UCKB1 without 3e recovery, so I could install unsigned files to prep for a re-install of CM. Apparently I flashed the wrong one, because the phone is now stuck in 3e recovery. It won’t let me use the power button to select reboot, etc. I can’t get it into download mode, even with a jig, or with one-click unbrick. I can’t even use ADB, since it is in recovery. I’ll take any advice with or without included insults. Thanks!
Does the phone immediately go into recovery on boot? If so, try using the soft buttons. depending on which CWM ur on, they may or may not work
flash to stock using an Odin 1 click, or regular Odin using a pit file, you must re-partition the device after coming off of cm 7
dude....drop the double SIG. thats straight up vulgar.
Thanks for the advice. I can't use Odin, because the phone won't get into download mode no matter what I try (see above.) soft buttons don't seem to be working either. Any other thoughts?
Fixed it!
Re-tried with a newly made jig. Must have blown a resister last time. Works now. Thanks for the advice.

Hey all,
I'm new to this rooting business, and to make a long story short, after I finally figured out how to root 2.3.5 Gingerbread, I tried flashing a ROM or two to see how they work. I messed up while flashing, and resorted to using Odin3 One-Click downloader to completely clear everything on my phone. This brought me back to the 2.1 Eclair version, and now I am wondering how can I upgrade it back go 2.3? I tried using Kies, but it gets stuck at the MTP stage on my phone. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'd rather not be stuck on 2.1 even though it was my own fault
you need to go under the development section and look for the sticky with Odin one click and download a gb version that has cwm injected into the kernel

Is there a kernel you can flash for 2.1 that has an extended power menu? That would allow you to select a reboot into download mode. But I have no idea if that kernel exists since 2.1 is a long long time ago. (what a miserable time that was)

that is in the framework-res.apk, the framework.jar and the android.policy.jar. which is contained in the rom, be it stock or custom.

just grab a stock gingernread package from HERE since you used odin one click to 2.1 (that flashed eclair bootloaders, which is why your button combos were mesed up) you will need a a gingerbread package WITH bootloaders.

Yes, you can still use Odin.
You may need to uninstall the heimdall divers, then reinstall the Samsung ones first.
