A friend wants me to root his phone - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So a friend wants me to root his phone for him and put a custom rom on it. Its the galaxy I9000. I assume from reading posts that I use super one click to root, then rom manager to flash I9000 recovery and I will then have root/custom recovery? When I rooted my Infuse there were a lot of extra steps like having a modded recovery file in order to flash in rom manager. Is this phone just must easier or am I off on some steps?

WRONG PLACE.

If im not mistaken then Super 1 click only works on Froyo and not with gingerbread but if your friends on froyo then that should work. If you can get into download mode then you could flash an odin stock rom like this one http://www.theandroidsoul.com/xxjvu/ then root with this http://www.theandroidsoul.com/root-xxjvu-firmware/ which adds root and clockworkmod then from there you can flash any rom you want. Or even just flash a CF-root which is compatable with whichever rom the phone is on

A friend of mine wants me to slap you.

It's easy to root the SGS, all you need is a rooted kernel for the version of Android you are using.
That being said, it is also easy to brick the phone if you are not familiar with proper flashing procedures for the Galaxy S.
There are a couple of good threads on how to flash the SGS, I advise you to read them.

[Q] Official Froyo XXJPO Root

Hi all,
Sorry to ask this but with all the various firmware versions I am confused about which is a good Rooting program for the Official JPO Froyo release. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thank you in advance

Actually I have the same question as was confused about which method to use as well. My phone is JPO/JPP/JP3. I have searched but all the root methods I found were for earlier versions of froyo and users reported problems.

Thank you glad to hear I am not alone
andrej.marinic:
Search is what started the confusion its hard to read all the threads to find out the end result.
I would also like to know if there is one that you can apply via the recovery method (like copying update.zip to sdcard) so I do not have to use a program like ODIN.
Thank you again in advance,
I did it using the CF method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
its very easy and pain free

Just make sure you use CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPO-v1.2-Busybox-1.17.1.zip
I have the official Germany Froyo. I will wait for the 3 Button fix and OCLF fix for the official Froyo.
I did tested other things and it made my phone slower and quickly out of memory. So I reset ( all data gone - but I did Backup my apps ) everything and it went normal
Just better wait until they find a solution for the official Froyo and not the unofficial Froyo.
I am using CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPO-v1.2-Busybox-1.17.1.zip flashed via Odin. Took 30 seconds and now I can use stuff like Titanium Backup and other useful apps. All on the official JPO through Kies.

Did you have any issues with 'un-rooting'??
EDITED:
What I am saying here is Kies totally bricked my phone and as such I won't use it again but instead Odin.
You however mention you are still using Kies. Did you have any issues in un-rooting when using Kies for the next flash... or have you not tried this yet?

Erm, not had a reason to un-root yet so haven't tried. But since this is flashed as a Kernel I presume I would have to flash another non-rooted Kernel through Odin in order to un-root. but don't know why I'd want to. If I wanted to upgrade to a newer version of Froyo, the root shouldn't affect it as far as I'm aware, it's only LagFixes really that are required to be disabled.
But to be on the safe side, you could re-flash a stock non-rooted JPO firmware from samfirmware.com through ODIN prior to going ahead with a Kies update, but this will mean you'll lose your data. I always go through this route anyway and then use Titanium backup to restore. (for which you'll require root!)

Just lag fixes need to be disabled in order to flash via kies, the last couple of flashes i did had root already on, flashed no problem.

Droid 3 update help please

just read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334704 and was really wanting the update. It is critical that I don't ruin my new phone for financial reasons, but I am obsessed with upgrading the damn thing. Can someone walk me through the process of getting the update without bricking it? I really need someone who knows what they are doing, no offense to others that would try to help but might not be as capable.
My Droid 3 (about 2 days old), is one-click rooted with the DARK DROID ROM. Also just downloaded and installed the camera fix (sorry, I looked for the link but couldn't find it). Here are a few screen shots for information. Would you or anyone else that really knows what they are doing help me out with this?
Here are some screen shots, hopefully they can provide info I forgot to mention.

You need to go back to a pure /system to flash the update. And I do not know if our current root methods work for it or not (I haven't read that thread yet).
BTW, you had the fixed camera when you flashed DarkDroid
If you are talking about the leaked OTA update, then you need to get back to the original Motoblur ROM, with all of the bloatware still on it. Then download the update and put it in the root of your internal storage. At that point, (don't quote me on this, im trying it tomorrow) you will power off your phone, and hold x and power at the same time, and the recovery mode will boot up (use the volume keys to make the menu pop up). At that point, scroll down to the install/apply update thing, ( can't remember exactly what its called ) then find the update file.
Im not sure yet if you need to change the file name to update.zip, and make sure your battery is above 70% when you do this.
Any other people that know how to do this, feel free to correct me or add on to what I posted.

Oh and remember to get a root keeper app. Because the update removes root and moto/verizon removed the root exploit.

I did the exact same thing, only I can't get past the MM symbol, and for the life of me cannot get into recovery either. The computer won't even recognize the phone. I think I'm screwed unless someone has a solution. The ONLY response that the phone has is to show the Motorola emblem if it is plugged into the wall, and afterwards turning it off is only possible by either letting the battery drain down or to pull it. I can't even turn it off and on.
Use my 5 min unbrick method. AP fastboot should never be broken.

Found an odd way to "trick" it into CWM, but it won't stay in it. I think this could be a battery issue.
I would be very cautious as you say you have to keep this thing in good shape for financial reasons. There is an sbf but make sure you know how to use it and what you are doing before attempting the update.

Samsung kies not going to upgrade due to so many reason. My fren g.note also faced the same prob before. He failed to upgrade thru kies as well. But after 2days tried, kies suddenly appear ugrade available. My another fren using s3 also same, mrn his phone detected update about 93mb available while at office, but he decide update thru kies at home. But nothing happened and kies appeared no update at all.Even he use ota thru his s3 also no more update available. But surprisingly he did manage update his s3 thru kies at second day. Weird right?..ha..
For 2.3.6 custom firmware litening rom will be my best choice.
For ics 4.0.4 custom rom, classic rom will be my choice.

You need to read and understand the whole original post. It looks like you might have a failed download of a rom - your phone was on android éclair or Froyo before flashing, right?
You need to get to gingerbread kk4 stock rom, including bootloader, then root the phone, then install Corn 7.06 kernel. You need to complete all those steps before you try to flash any other, newer roms.
When you are sure you have a good usb connection, then go to this additional thread and install GBKK4 stock. In that thread you will also find links to root phone and to Corn kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912
Use the one that includes the GB bootloaders when you first flash Stock KK4.
If you cannot get the phone to be seen by the PC or Mac after trying all the tips in the connection issues thread from my earlier post, then you will need to get or make a usb jig.

Need you to provide more info and to read the threads carefully.
The links to drivers are in the threads I already posted, if you really read through the thread, you will find them. If English language is not easy for you, find a local friend who can help you read the threads.
What ROM were you running when you started to flash a new rom that ended up with the download screen that you posted in your first message here?
What flashing tool, for example, Odin, were you using.?
What ROM and version were you trying to flash?
Were you already rooted or trying to root the phone?
What computer, with what operating system were you using?
Which drivers?
What cable did you use? Samsung original or other?
Did you try different USB ports?

Try Odin 1.85, not the one click variety, but the full Odin. With the phone in download mode as you originally posted, does Odin see the phone?
If you cannot get into download mode, you probably need a jig.
Sent from the wholly ROMin' empire. SGH-I897 CM10.1
As laughingT said try the full version and If it doesn't work buy a jig (they are very cheap and will come in handy if you plan on flashing in the future) or just make your own, I made myself one and it didn't take long at all, here's a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604707
Ok what kind of jig i kinda need can some one put one on ebay? trusted sellers plz

There's 1 kind of jig. It's a jig. Just make one you're better off and the satisfaction of seeing it work is amazing. IF you really don't want to you can buy them from pretty much anyone on ebay, it's pretty cheap no one would bother ripping you off. (You can make one for under $10)
A Jig will force your phone into download mode.
When flashing my ROM sometimes it would fail flash even tho Odin exclaimed success and get such a screen you did. For me, I just pretended it was in download mode still, reconnected my USB so Odin would recognize the COM port, and flash it again.

It basically will put your phone into download mode, so when you get it turn the phone off, plug in the jig and then boot it up, once you see the yellow triangle and it says downloading you can take the jig out and plug in your usb cable and flash.

Status 0 on every Cyanogenmod, help needed.

I've got this phone that I sold to a person, but he couldn't get the camera working and the gallery. Only the contacts and calling worked but before I sold it to him everything worked perfectly fine, now the thing is he says that he got some kind of message and just pressed some buttons.
And now this phone has this issue that the internal SD isn't working or won't see it.
I told him to give the phone to me and I would try and fix it by just wiping it in CWM 6.0.3.2 it was running on Cyanogenmod 10.1 nightly, but now I got this error that it won't install any of the roms anymore of Cyanogen, it gives me this error report :
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
It will just boot to CWM now as I wiped the entire thing so no rom is on it anymore.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Issue has been resolved thanks to xsenman
I have several ideas:
Firstly, you should try mount the phone to PC through 'mounts and storage' option, copy new ROMs and Kernels. You can then try installing different kernel (Semaphore, CyanCore) for JB4.2, reboot to recovery, full wipe and install ROM. If you still get same error, try it with external SD.
If that method won't work, you can try using Odin (but be careful!) - install 3-file JVZ ROM with repartition
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
hotfile. com/dl/136940891/b232b26/I9000XWJVZ_I9000OXAJVT_OXA.rar.html
then JVZ kernel
Code:
www.semaphore. gr/kernels/Semaphore_kernel_JVZ_2.1.1.tar
- and now you should be able to install custom ROMs again.
PS. Remember to take EFS backup if you didn't before.

I'll report back if this method worked.
Solution:- Most likely you have a incompatible CWM, or your Zip files are corrupted or you have mounted /system or /data

That's what My Android Solutions say about error "Status 0" in point 26.
For me wiping everything and installing stock rom + kernel with working CWM did a trick when I had similar problems.

There are 20 versions of Galaxy S, and their ROMS may not be compatible with each other, so make sure you know which model and which ROM should be used. CWM version 6.0.32 is much advanced version for Gingerbread ROM and used in S3 and S4 models, most likely the reason for your problem

I followed it and now I'm at the point where CWM is no more on the phone, my only last resort is Download mode now. I need the files in order to continue further though, but I have no idea which files I would need for Odin?
