hi everyone, i am about to give up trying to repair my sxl.
here is what i have done:
1. went to htcdev, unlocked bootloader
2. installed cwm
3. successfully rooted by installing supersu
4. phone was running fine until i installed vm heap tool and wrongly tweaked it
5. phone stops rebooting at htc word with white background
6. i have read and followed all the steps suggested to recover it in every threads in xda (install stock recovery.img, modaco's, anzhi's, vold.fstab, supermisc, etc.)
7. my only main problem is i can't mount the sdcard in cwm or using cmd to start recovering
i am totally stucked here, please help. i have downloaded stock & bindroid's modded rom but unable to install without the sdcard being mounted.
now running:
fardjadb
runnymede pvt ship s-off
hboot-1.25.0004
radio-3831.16.00.27_m
emmc-boot
oct 20 2011, 00:20:33
one issue that stumps me is installing the recovery, the only success cwm recovery that is able to run is recovery_for_1.28.img (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27019573#post27019573). all others are black screen but when i touch the bottom 4 bottons, i can feel the phone vibrates.
please help, thank you.
ps. even the -vol button is bruised over the frequent pushing to load recovery

Flash the ics hboot and SD card issues will disapear. Also pull build.prop from /system/ and find the line that says "VM Heap size" change the value to 32m.

hi, thanks for replying.
can you please give me a step by step instruction on the procedure of flashing back to ics hboot?
and where can i download the ics hboot?
does it involves adb push it into sdcard and use cwm to install it? if yes, i can only 'adb push' to sdcard but can never see it in cwm because i can't mount sdcard
when i upgraded ota, my hboot shows:
runnymede pvt ship s-on

i forgot to mention that all data has been wiped from my sxl, so i can't change the setting like you suggested.
thanks
Download an ICS RUU (anyone will do) extract the rom.zip from the RUU and upack it. In the extracted folder you will see the hboot file, change the extention of the file to .img, then copy it to the same folder as fastboot.exe. open a command promp and tap in "fastboot flash hboot xxxxx.img (xxxxx = whatever the file is called)

hi androhero, my questions:
1. how to detect an ics ruu?
2. i currently have BinDroid_RUNMED2.5_V1.6_FINAL, BinDroid Stock ASIAN 1 14 709 2 2 3 5 SXL and BB_P34 (from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1618648.html) but unable to find the file rom.zip you mentioned, where is it located in these ruu?
thanks
Look here
well, i am giving up trying to recover my sxl.
i have done extracting and flashing hboot but it gave me:
failed <remote: signature verify fail>
also i have downloaded several ruu and try installing but most gave an error of wrong version, error 131, error 155 or fails after sending signature stage.
btw, i can see most of the ruu posted here are mostly in file hosting website that are no longer accessible. in the process of looking for a cure for my sxl, i found 2 website that has lots of roms for download but unable to post here due to spam prevention. if anyone wants it, pls msg me.
thank you all for trying to help.
-----------------------------------------update 13june2012--------------------------------
i have finally managed to repair my htc myself but with lots of trial and error.
first off, i wish to thank all from unlimited.io :good::good::good: for their great s-off hboot that enable any ruu to be installed.
here's what i did before i soft bricked it:
unlocked bootloader via htcdev, flashed to fardjadb's hboot, applied zergrush's superuser, finally played with vm heap tool..... soft bricked.
sent to 3 party repairer after my above post, it came back with an xl_cn... rom that has some minor problem with google play (fixed) and re-bricked when i fooled around with faceniff that had my htc running slow and some icons in brown color square.
sent to malaysia sole distributor, sis (m) s/b, that told me i have to change my motherboard as i have damaged it with custom rom. (please do not follow this advise)
all these while i encountered the main problem with 'unable to mount sdcard' (i can see a lot of post here asking how to solve it). i found out that flashing the correct recovery file will have your data, cache, system folder seen in recovery mode but still no sdcard. i flashed the recovery for 1.28.
took back my htc and below is how i managed to make my htc boot up again:
1. flashed unlimited.io's protected hboot for 1.25 following androidhero's advise
3) Boot into fastboot, connect device to PC and flash recovery image.
"fastboot flash recovery recovery_for_1.28.img"
4) Reboot into recovery, connect device to PC again, Fire up adb and check device is connected. "adb devices"
5) Download unlimited.io "hboot_7230ddr2_Runnymede_6.25.4444.nb0" and copy it to the same folder as adb.exe
6) In adb command prompt type in "adb push hboot_7230ddr2_Runnymede_6.25.4444.nb0 /tmp" then "adb shell" and finally "dd if=/tmp/hboot_7230ddr2_Runnymede_6.25.4444.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18"

2. run the ics ruu (i did this while in fastboot unlocked mode and i think any ruu will work this time without errors like 140, 155, etc.) RUU_RUNNYMEDE_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_2.31.401.2_Radio_20.70.30.0832U_3831.16.00.16_M_release_258303_signed and it starts to run till finished.
i am a happy man! :victory:

For maybe some more like me that want to go back to what it use to be with the hboot S-OFF, S-ON issue.
I had my phone S-OFF with alpharevx beta. Used CM7 -stable for couple days but decided i wanted to go back to all original. I first RUU my phone with the RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.22.405.1_Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed.exe file. Boot it up, made sured it runs, then did what is instructed below here;
To be able to do this you need HTC USB drivers installed. Install the HTC pakage, reboot, uninstall the HTC-
Sync software, keep the drivers! reboot PC again.
Power off your phone. Plug in your USB cable to phone. Press volume down and powerup your phone. After it
settle navigate down and choose fastboot option.
1. Unpack these files to your c:\fastboot
2. Open up your windows command promt (WinVista/7 users rightclick choose run as Administrator)
3. in command promt type CD\ then press enter
4. then your should be in C:\
5. type cd fastboot
6. then you should now be in dir C:\fastboot
7. Im bored to death typing, look below. Beware of each command ends with enter. After success, reboot.
C:\fastboot>fastboot oem mb 9C068490 1 30
... OKAY
C:\fastboot>fastboot flash hboot hboot_buzz_7225_1.01.0001.nb0
sending 'hboot' (512 KB)... OKAY
writing 'hboot'... OKAY
Files needed (Windows version): megaupload.com/?d=UO9L74I9
Works perfectly for me.
* NOTE: Im not responsible for your phone if you brick/kill it. These steps worked for me!
This should help a lot of people. Cheers for your post.
Tanks a lot man, this should be Sticky

After is better to avoid potential problems with Custom Recoveries and ROMs. Which is precisely what the OP says as well.
I first RUU my phone with the RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.22.405.1_Radio_13.55.55.2 4H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed.exe file. Boot it up, made sured it runs, then did what is instructed below here;
I had to triple check what I typed out of fear of brick, but alas, it worked like a charm!
Small Edit: This method also works with AlphaRev X (version 0.2pre5) that they just released.

Seems like no one tried it yet. For such a kind of thing, just after ruu, one should root the phone with superone click root method and then go for hboot flashing. But can't expect how the results will be. I think it will not brick since it is a fast boot flash. The possibility is the stock OS then becoming instable and unbootable. If so, just think there will not be alpharevx s-off option then, since it needs a full booted phone. And since there is no custom recovery, I think it becomes hard to make it normal (don't know if Su binary can be cleared from hboot menu through clear storage).
A better thing to try is retaining the custom recovery and flashing stock hboot. But still I can predict nothing. Ofcourse it might not brick the phone. But before doing anything, it is better to take the suggestion of the devs.

I install this rom: [ROM] Android Revolution HD™ 7.0.2 to a friend in INSPIRE htc 4g and it worked great, I was sure it was compatible with my htc incredible s. I do not check and made the mistake of installing this spectacular rom on my htc incredible S and now when I switch on it freezes on a white screen with the logo of HTC. My HTC Incredible S has S-OFF Revolutionary and was bought in Bell Canada. I can enter bootloader mode using: power button + volume button down, however, will not let me enter recovery. But, I may use the HBoot, however I haven't a rom that can be used from hboot, I think it has to be a stock rom rar compressed. just image files inside and called PG32IMG. I've searched and can not find it and I don't find the way to solve this problem, please help restore function to my htc incredible s.

you should download SDK tools from android.com , and work ur way out through the fastboot ... from ur PC ...
install sdk tools from here :
http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html
i'm not so pro myself with this , but here is what i did , and i recommed u do the same
download it , and then open it and click check on the following :
Android SDK Tools , Android SDK Platform-tools
then On the same program expand Android 2.3.3 and check on : SDK platform and Samples for SDK ... do the same for the Android 2.2 and 2.1 sections
after u check those , click install Packages .. then wait till finished ...
now On your computer create a new folder on ur C: hard drive , and name it "Android" and there you will be putting the following 3 files in this new folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
fastboot.exe
you will be able to find the files in the following locations.
1.
To find adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, look in C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
2.
To find fastboot.exe look in C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\tools
although fastboot.exe might be in the first folder aswell ... but u gotta find it there too
ok now ur ready to go ...
so now you have to download some recovery Clockworkmod or 4ext , the one u like more .. doesnt matter ... then open the zip file that u downloaded and copy the "recovery.img" file in it to the folder that we created on ur C: drive "Android" where u put the adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, fastboot.exe files ...
next ..
turn on ur phone and boot it into bootloader ... connect it to the pc .. and then choose FASTBOOT
Now ,Open up command prompt. ( Start > Run > Type CMD,). The window that appears is called Command Prompt.
now listen up .. u have to navigate to ur C:Android folder from there ... and thats how u do it ... just type the following
cd.. then press enter , then again type
cd.. again enter ... then type
cd Android now u r ready to flash the recovery so u can flash a new rom ..
so now type :
fastboot flash recovery "the EXACT name of the recovery file that u just copied to ur C:Android file" .. for example if its named clockworkmod .. u just type
fastboot flash recovery clockworkmod.img ( dont forget to type .img after the name )
now after u done that ... type
fastboot reboot-bootloader
now u have a recovery ... there u go ...
sorry for the sloppiness .. but this is the first time i post a guide it sucks .. i know but hope it helps

Yes after you flash the ROM in CWM, you need to manually flash the boot.img file that is contained in the custom ROM zip file in FASTBOOT USB mode.

You're not f***ed, dude You can get your recovery back by flashing a new one trough a PG32IMG.zip. To unroot your phone properly it's not enough to just flash a RUU. I once found a great guide on the internet but it's in German. But it worked for me, so it's definitely possible

The red triangle with the exclamation mark is the 'fail' indication in stock recovery, it seems that your ruu has written the recovery but has not written hBoot which is why your hBoot reads 6.xx (revolutionary). My advice is to get a goldcard micro sd card and re flash the ruu using a pc (provided that your inc s can go to hBoot USB). Then you will be unrooted to stock.
Edit.
Downgrade from pc using goldcard and USB mode. Use a gingerbread ROM, preferably from your region, or English WWE and not the ICS Chinese ruu, unless you're from China.

How'd you get s-off using revolutionary? Didn't you make a goldcard for it? There's an excellent tutorial in the sticky section on how to make a goldcard. If I remember right, it takes just the 15 min including the time it takes for the revskills site to email you the IMG file. Best of luck.

OK, here is what you need to do:
1. Boot the phone into FASTBOOT USB mode and then flash ClockworkMod recovery image using the command:
fastboot flash recovery [path to recovery.img]
That will restore ClockworkMod.
From there you can either restore a previous nandroid backup you made or flash a new custom ROM.
Here is the link for ClockworkMod recovery image:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-vivo.img

I've been having some problems recently. I've been wanting to update to Kitkat but I have replaced the stock recovery software with CWM, and thus it doesn't work.
To solve this problem I've figured out that I need to get my claws on an RUU, which I have. Hopefully I've grabbed the right one. It doesn't seem like the RADIO serial-thingy matches though. Device has
Code:
4A.21
whilst the RUU has
Code:
4A.23
.
I've tried using the RUU in fastboot but later figured out that I need to have S-OFF for that. That is currently not the case. I've tried using both Firewater and Rumrunner. According to the instructions I'm required to have the phone on in the usual way. As in, not in the bootloader. The problem is that my phone is stuck in some restart loop. When reaching the PIN-screen it will automatically restart/crash after a few seconds. I can however use the phone as usual during this time. Sometimes, it alerts me with an error.
It also seems like the battery completely empties itself sometimes. This is when trying to restore it, getting in and out from the bootloader and the like.
Here's some software info:
CID: HTC__Y13
MIDN0710000
Bootloader info:
Code:
M7_UL PBT SHIP S-ON RH
Code:
HBOOT-1.55.0000
Code:
RADIO-4A.21.3263.04
Code:
OpenDSP-v32.120.274.0909
Code:
OS-3.62.401.1
Great thanks in advance and pardon my useless formatting (and my lacking knowledge of this forum as there might be some rules I'm not following), I'm damn tired of this device.

If the RUU is an .exe file, then try placing it in the same folder as your ADB/FASTBOOT files. Plug-in your phone to your PC so that it is recognized on the PC then double click the RUU.exe file. Follow the on-screen instructions. You don't need S-OFF to run an RUU for your phone with the correct CID & MID providing the RUU is the same version or higher.

The RUU crashes when launching it, "InstallScript Setup Launcher has stopped working". I'm quite sure I have the required stuff to run it. Running it as admin didn't help.

It looks like a PC issue. Check out this post Installscript setup launcher has stopped working! In the reply they list two methods it looks like you did the first one. Sometimes, I just have to reboot the computer to get everything set correctly.

Unfortunately, none of these methods helps. The device is supposed to be in Fastboot USB mode when the RUU is launched, yes?

what is the ruu version you are trying to use (complete file name)?
easiest way: download this guru reset file, its exactly the same version you have on your phone now.
http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_3-62-401-1-zip/
put TWRP 2.6.3.3 (recommended) recovery on your phone
copy the zip to your SDcard
Enter recovery and flash like you would do with a custom rom
in the Aroma installer, select wipe data, install stock recovery, install stock radio when prompted.
This file will put you back to fully stock.

Hi, I'm a newbie and I was supposed to post a thread regarding a problem I'm facing similar to this. So if it's alright, I'll post it here also and ask for your advice. I recently unlocked my HTC One w/ 4.4.2 amd Sense 6.0 a few days ago and was also able to flash CWM custom recovery and root it. I then tried flashing the latest Android Revolution HD, when I rebooted the phone after intallation, it just stays on the first spash screen. I forgot that I needed to S-off my device. So now, I can only access the bootloader and recovery. The status of my device currently is *Tampered*, Unlocked and S-On with 1.57 Hboot. Also, I can't copy files from my PC to the device. I don't know what to do. I've been reading around but I think I need some concrete advice. Thank you in advance.

Best to start your own thread, but on a quick fix, your problem is CWM, you need to use TWRP recovery to flash that rom, also recommend 2.6.3.3
Tampered and unlocked is normal, nothing to worry about, and you don't need s-off to flash custom rom's, just an unlocked bootloader

Bugger, I have it renamed to RUU.exe and it's md5 doesn't match any file from the site I remember I downloaded it from. I am, however, currently downloading
Code:
RUU_M7_UL_K44_SENSE55_MR_O2_UK_4.20.206.16_Radio_4A.23.3263.28_10.38r.1157.04L_release_353143_signed_2.exe
CID and MID matches, but I didn't buy it in the UK. It was bought in Europe.

Thank you, I appreciate your advice. I tried flashing TWRP recovery but when I go into TWRP recovery, my touchscreen doesn't respond. Any thoughts on why? It works when I'm on CWM though.

Did you name that file yourself, that's the wrong file, that one is O2 "206", hence 4.20.206.16 you need 401, 3.62.401.1 which is WWE, the same number under your os information in your first post and the same as the guru reset I linked.

with your phone booted in twrp main menu, and the rom.zip in the same folder of adb.exe and fasboot.exe:
Code:
adb push guru_reset_m7_3.62.401.1.zip /sdcard/
wait for the file to transfer (5-10 min) (there is no progress bar just wait adb to tell you the file transfer is complete)
then in twrp hit "install" and then choose guru_reset_m7_3.62.401.1.zip

Alright, so my step-son boffed my wife's phone when he tried to root? upgrade? god-knows-what to it.
i've been fighting with it for over a week now. i have made SOME progress getting out of soft-brick
but i seriously am banging my head and need help.
This is my first time trying to deal with a phone. so please, talk to me like i'm 4 years old.

Hardware:
Phone: HTC One S
SD Slot: NO
Carrier SIMM slot: Yes
Carrier: straight-talk simm, T-Mobile phone

Hboot with Fastboot installed
Bios? options:
Recovery
Factory Reset
Clear Storage
Sim Lock
Image CRC
Show Barcode
Recovery Mode:
Team Win Recovery Project V2.7.1.0
OpenRecovery-TWRP-2.7.1.0-fille_u.img
ADB, ADB-Sidebar, Fastboot all are getting recognized.
I downloaded and installed Viper_One_S_3.1.3.zip
instillation went fine.
it was freezing on the load screen (after the animated viper logo completed it just stays there.)
did more googling and found out i need to copy the .img files to a boot partiton:
from the viper_one/kernel folder i fastbooted the .IMG
fastboot flash boot boot_hboot2.15.img
(did hboot2.15 instead of hboot2.16 because it matches the hboot in the bios screen?)
no good.
i still have full access to adb, adb-sideload, twerp, etc...
i just can't get Viper One S to run.
(NOTE: the VenomRoms website said nothing about taking the boot .IMG out and fastbooting that separate. i deduced that from another thread. am i wrong? )
While i wait for help i will be toying with trying to make ViperOneS v3.2.0 work.

4. How do I install the rom?!
ViperOneS Install Instructions
Download the the latest ViperOneS full ROM zip from the download section
Place the file somewhere on your phone storage.
Confirm the MD5 on the download page matches the MD5 of the file on your phone (ES File Explorer will show the MD5 of the file)
Reboot to Recovery (we recommend TWRP 2.6.3.0 for users on 2.15 HBoot. Users on 2.16 HBoot MUST use the modified 2.6.1.0 TWRP recovery from @LlabTooFeR)
Backup current ROM if desired
Install ROM and select wipe during aroma install if coming from another base or rom
Reboot and Enjoy

What I gather from the instructions, it's the same as a HTC One. You don't have to flash the boot.img separately.
But it is Critical you use the exact recovery they call for or else it won't boot. So go find and flash that and you should be good. also do the Wipe they suggest.
What happens with different versions of recovery is scripting is handled differently in different versions and the Developer may use a Script that's not handled correctly in a different version of TWRP ( thus the need for a specific version )
