Hi, there(again!) ...
The more I read around your forum, the more questions and problems I see... my first encounter with mobile software issues, Android and never done rooting/flashing, etc...
so, I want to unlock my Note, so I have to root it and maybe flash it with another ROM.. I have no data/apps, whatsoever I am scared to lose, as it is just a few days old phone.
My Note was manufactured in May 2012 and came (bought used/just opened package and then sold as unwanted gift) locked to Vodafone UK (where I ma at) and it comes with 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6 kernel version...
Now, I pretty much understand what is involved in this process I want to take on, but I have questions not addressed yet:
- will this guide be good enough for my model http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJjh6gi0Spw?
is it possible that since my Note model is newer by production than some of the guides here, that there might be some incompatibilities during rooting and flashing?
-since my 2.3 stock Android is one of later version (and therefore not directly rootable!) , I need to downgrade to an older version stock ROM that is rootable, like N7000XXKKA ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000CPWKK3, available from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997, and then root it with this (easiest) method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehXcnqntsro and it should all be good?
-I understand that one can't update after having performed root/flashing, unless he un-roots the phone. I also read about all these great custom ROMs like Rocket, KingDroid, Check, etc. So, every time they are installed, the person performs a "clean install" like in Windows, right?
- for my needs and these purposes, do I need to install CFW straight away, before any rooting/flashing, and what elso should I do before attempting to do anything?
-32-bit XP vs. 64-bit Windows 7 laptop for doing this stuff? Which one is less likely to cause any mess?
-when reading about bricked Note(s), I saw also term superbricked being mentioned-what is that? Also, how can one avoid messing up that EMCC chip in Note, after which only Samsung can fix the phone?
sorry guys, for being a noob... But, I am trying to learn....

I have the same version of the Note. I used the method given by the website:
http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=unbenannt3bup1.jpg
After that I download the file:
CF-Root-SGN_XX_SER_LA6-v5.0-CWM5
http://download.chainfire.eu/142/CF-Root/SGN/CF-Root-SGN_XX_SER_LA6-v5.0-CWM5.zip
and run the already-rooted.bat to inject the CWM.
Just a curious question but have you seen different methods posted for different n7000? I dont see how its relevant?

No, I have not... But, I have seen people using same method on the same model(s) and getting different results, and it is not always that someone skipped the line in the instruction guide to rooting/flashing...

so NO to this

-Driver should be proper. you can use XP or Win7 Though in my opinion winXP is user friendly for perticular this stuff.
-Superbrick means you can't repair device yourself with just SW, you need to have change motherboard from service centre. This bug have NO any relation in Gingerbread ROM.
SO what option available for you to root is
- Downgrade to directly rootable ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
and root with zrgrush method (running not rootable yet) here is guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
OR
- Flash Prerooted ROM

BEFORE you judge me lol : I'm a new android user, and I've searched and read through the forum and FAQs alike.
Sorry if this is already answered. I've tried the search and read through the FAQs already but there's so much information my head will just explode from it.
Also I'm a fresh android user (just switched over from the iPhone, yay?). I was a very enthusiastic jailbreaker for the iPhone when I was still using that device. Hence my enthusiasm for all things "hackable" for the Android device as well.
All my blabbering aside, I'm just wondering this.
When the Froyo update hits the i9000, your root and everything with it(custom firmwares and stuff?) will be "broken" and be restore as the "stock" Froyo firmware/build right?
Am I even making sense to anyone?
for new firmware, you have to flash it, and so, everything will loss, storage in your internal and external SD will remain but all you app, mod, messages, call log, contact, etc will be lost
like you've partition your home PC with app data saved in C drive and all other documents in D drive, when you reinstall your OS, you wipe off your C and install it again and everything in D should remain (if you do it the right way )
correct me if i am wrong
We won't know for sure, but the way HTC handles Froyo updates, there is no data loss.
But to reply OP, yes, root will most probably be lost. But ability to flash custom firmware should still be available. Afterall, in the first place we don't even need root to flash custom firmwares in the first place, at least on the SGS.

So this does mean that we will be able to get the froyo update through kies even though we are running rooted custom ROM?
alright thanks for the speedy reply and clarification. i have a lot of new terms i'll need to learn for the android now. lol.
sorry, OP, are you talking about an official Samsung firmware update using kies or the one using odin3?

Most probably not. You might have to return to stock firmware to get any updates from Kies.
But what's the point? The Froyo firmware will be available in the Odin form certainly.

i think the stock official firmware update. i'm also afraid that flashing a new OS for my current 2.1 will screw up any local settings. i need to do more research about this whole flashing, rooting thing...
shall spare you guys my questions. lol.
ironic from my previous post, i'll just like to ask one simple question.
since i'm a totally new android user, i should just wait for the OFFICIAL Froyo for the SGSi9000, update it and wait for some modified version of the OS, and i'll flash it over for a speedier, more accessable phone?
(i've read the FAQ a thousand times lol.)

the official one is somewhat released near September as i remember... so you have to wait till that time to do it.... i know nothing about flashing using Kies since I am a new user to android as well
but what i am thinking is: either you flash the current firmware (JP3, JP2, etc) using Odin3 or the official firmware using the Kies, the chance is if you brick your phone, samsung will also not responsible for it, so... unless you take your phone to the customer service, you are still risking
well you definitely know more than me lol thanks for the information folks. imma root my phone, don't think there's any risk ye. wish me luck lol.
I am gonna necro this thread since I am an absolute idiot.
It took me a few days just to understand that root is not the SAME as flashing. Finally got that through my head. Hence I can keep my stock JG4 firmware while having root.
But what happens when Froyo comes along. As someone already said, we are going to lose root if we update via KIES. Then what? Do we just use the One Click Root to root our phone again? (Right now I haven't found a reason to flash to a custom ROM yet.)
I am asking this since I am sick of losing all my data in my phone every time I have to upgrade my firmware, but if I can't root my phone afterwards, titanium backup won't work.

as backup tool I use MyBackup Pro (paid app). it backups all (SMS, MMS, Call Logs, Settings ...) and your Apps too.
good stuff.
I have an ATT Captivate which I managed to update from original Android 2.1 to 2.2 firmware, version I897UCJI6.
This was before ATT release their official 2.2 update.
I also managed to unlock the phone.
I have to admit I am totally ignorant of this stuff, and I was lucky enough not to brick my phone during those updates.
I am very unhappy with the battery life of my phone, and I read that the Gingerbread dramatically improves this aspect.
So, shall I upgrade to Gingerbread?
If yes, I am confused with the many sites which offer advice with how to do this, some contradicting with others. (One indicated to reverse back to 2.1 before upgrading to 2.3, other didn't say that, etc etc)
Should this upgrade be successfull, what happens to the lock/unlock status?
Do I need to unlock again?
Which is a trusted site?
Any advice?
Thank you for any help
UnLock stays after flashing.
As for a trusted site.... Ummm you found it. Xda...
Thank you
Will this upgrade really improve battery life?
If not I'll stay with 2.2
I got Max of 18 or so hours on froyo, I can go over 2 days now. Ymmv though.
Thanks again
I assume this would be the thread to follow, right ?

Which indicates the use of this file : I897UCKH3_noboot.tar.md5 (dated 8/24/2011, 305191 KB)
I did find another file somewhere, presumably doing the same thing - that file name is:
I897UCKH3_HOME.tar.md5 (dated 8/19/2011 298421 KB)
I stated before I am kind of ignorant, and easily confused with all those information.
Which one is the right file?
Am I on the right track?
If you going to use KH3 without bootloaders you need to flash This bootloaders first.
Is there a thread for novices, where all those terms are explained, or where the procedures to be followed are explained for somebody who who can follow indicated steps (without really knowing the meaning of all those terms) which could lead to 100% success?
I don't mind reading a little, but I don't have time to become an expert (and I'm sure many readers here are like me, looking for plain simple advice on how to upgrade their phones, without having the skills and knowledge to do it)
Reading those posts here can be sooo confusing...
Somebody recommends you to do this, somebody recommends you to do that, and the poor you have no clue what they're talking about...
Simple if you want Gingerbread you need new bootloaders (except Cyanogenmod and MIUI). Bootloaders are like the BIOS in your computer. If you mess up the bootloaders you can hardbrick your phone.
Got it
Next logical question would be WHY the person who indicated how to upgrade to Gingerbread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233620) did not tell in his post that you need new bootloaders.
Or at least I do not see that in his post.
Which means that a novice like me can ruin his/her phone very easy..
No bootloader ODIN packages are made for people that already have the GB bootloaders. So you don't get a hard brick.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232703
I believe this is what you want to use.

Flashing a GB ROM without GB bootloaders won't ruin your phone. May cause a bootloop, but not a hard brick. Cezar is super picky about things being safe. If you had hit the link he had for tips and tricks, it says something about bootloaders.
After reading all related posts, I am still confused - pls help:
I understand that if I follow Cesar's link, I need bootloaders first.
If I follow Przekret's link, I do NOT need bootloadres first (they are included)
So how do I decide which route to follow ? In the end I get the same result, GB 2.3.4 - correct?
I am currently on Froyo, UCJI6, rooted and unlocked.
Do I loose my rooting (I understand that unlocking stays)
Again, which method should I use (Cesar or Przekret) ?
Thank you
If you need bootloaders, don't use Cezars.
As these are stock roms, you will lose root. But if you flash any custom ROM, it should be rooted.
No method is incorrect. I would flash Bootloaders firs because there seems to be less chance to hard brick (I've noticed sometimes ODIN doesn't flash one bootloader after another). Thats my personal experience, but like I said neither of the methods are incorrect, I just never used the one with bootloaders included since I already had them when KH3 came out, so I can't speak for that package myself.
How do I know if I need bootloaders or not?
Unless you bought that phone modded with the GB bootloaders you need them. No real way to know except flashing a GB rom like cezars package. If it works You didn't need them, If it din't work then you soft bricked your phone and you might need a jig to get in to Download mode again.

Hello All,
I've read a lot of forums as to installing custom roms and I'm still lost. I haven't tried anything yet cause I'm too chicken to experiment and possibly kill my phone. Long story short, I still would like to install a custom rom to mainly get free wifi tethering.
I noticed in most of the forums that the only way to even begin the process is to downgrade to SPL 4.xxx. I don't have a restore point in Zuncee cause my pc crashed a month ago. Is the only way for me to downgrade from 5.xxx to 4.xxx, is by the goldcard method or is there a work around? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there,
I was in the same situation you are now! Last week on Tuesday I brought a HD7 from ebay and thought it would be as easy to install custom rom as my HD2.....after reading the forums here it was anything else! But still by Wednesday I had custom ROM on my phone (im using deepshining). The only method I tried and what worked was the Goldcard method. I made my own Y cable and followed the instructions on the Goldcard thread. I found this video on youtube quite useful as well!
Any questions just ask me ill try to help as much as I can. I did find it tough to work out at first but when you have a custom ROM installed its like a new phone!

There's nothing you can do, except gold card, it's safe and easy, no need to be afraid
Hi dcscorpio76,
I am currently also in the same boat as you.
I have SPL 5.12... and also want to downgrade.
I have no backup to revert to as i recently wiped my PC and never kept my old WP backups.
After lots of reading (and im still not 100% on the process so will likely read some more) I intend to downgrade my SPL and then flash an 'unlocked' version of UK trophy rom. From what i have read i think im going to have to use the 'gold card' method so i will be buying a few bits (cables, usb gender changer etc.) When i have all the things (i believe) i need i will write back here on what i do and where it gets me.
I have a £10 nokia that i still love and i wouldn't be all that bothered if i had to use it. Why not wait until i have flashed mine (over the next couple of days i think) so that you dont risk bricking your device that you may still rely on?
I dont totally dislike my WP, its just that i want to breathe a new lease of life into it. I would like to customise the UI and play with some homebrew apps.
One thing i dont really intent to explore is running apps that should be paid for in the marketplace as im a believer in paying a good price for good apps. So i wont be answering any questions on that.
If you have already gone ahead and tinkered i'd be interested in any info you may have.
Thanks

Alright guys,
So I am pretty much on the same scenario you guys are, I am coming from several rooted Android devices and expected this to be much easier
Here's my HTC info:
Name: HTC HD7
Model: HTC HD7
Carrier: T-Mobile
Software: Windows ® Phone 7.5
OS Version: 7.10.8107.79
Radio SW: 5.71.09.02a_22.51.50.21U
Radio HW: A.12.0.D4
Bootloader: 5.12.2250.0(135916)
I was reading this Thread but apparently I need to use a Y USB cable, in order to flash a Goldcard ROM since I first need to DOWNGRADE my Bootloader version. I am a bit more than lost when it comes to figuring out where to start. Just BTW: It is a stock build, the phone got the OTA update.
Ultimately I need to have a Custom ROM that supports Multiple Languages, as well as no carrier branding
Any suggestions, in plain english?

I am waiting for my HD7 replacement so might be in the same situation. Would it not be possible to enter bootloader and them flash pre nodo original rom?
Goldcard by viperbjk is the easiest and the safest method so far to downgrade our bootloaders....i was on 5.11 and I did the goldcard method and it went on smooth like butter!! I'm currently on bootloader 3.1(HSPL) and flashed the deepshinig v7.6 and I'm loving my phone right now
Just follow the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893152
Good luck! And happy flashing!!
Hi there folks!
Im getting mighty confused about this flashing thing.
Im looking to change my ROM to something else then the ICS from Samsung.
Here is the deal.
I read the warning posts and it say (what i think it means) that my build "XLP9" ICS 4.0.3 from Samsung is not safe to do anything on.
I look around on the net to see if there is a way (despite what i read here).
It looks promising.
But all the things i find is ether a lower version of Android (like 2.3.x) or someone is telling me about tons of stuff to download and do before.
So this is were i ask you all.
Do (been searching for 2 days, perhaps my search terms are bad) anyone know if there is a working way to for me to change my version to AOKP for e.g without destroying my phone?
Like i said before, my Build is: XLP9, android version 4.0.3 (from Samsungs update service).
Phone is rooted using CWM.
Its a Note version for the .EU market bought like a few weeks ago (came with 2.3.x i believe).
If you know a thread that contains step by step instructions that will allow me to change the rom, please post it to me here.
Or if I´m screwed for updating to ICS just tell me so to
Cheers

But since i did the upgrade to ICS is the old rom still on the phone?
I mean to reset it back (same as thode recovery discs on a computer).
Any help or points in the right direction is helpfull at this time.

Now that you have upgraded to ICS. Those are the factory settings.
Easiest way to downgrade to GB Is by flashing a stock GB rom via pc Odin.
Most of the new ICS custom ROMs now just require you to install AbyssKernel 4.2, then select advanced options and select reboot recovery. Then you wipe your device (wipe data, cache and dalvik cache). From this moment you're free to flash. It all takes less then a minute if you hurry (joking, don't rush when flashing your phone), and it's not very complicated. Do it once and you'll know it's simple.
You need to have a root access first. Plenty of guides how to do it out there.
Hey guys, the thing is I tracked down a Note 1 running 4.0.4 unroot, but is running terribly at this point. I think it is due to so many apps install and present on the homescreen. It is available for 'bout $200 (all my budget, in South East Asian it's pretty big, so bear with me). If I get it, I'd definitely flash it to 4.1 or newer, as I can't bear the lag on 4.0 now.
So, any advice on whether I should get it? Is the thing flashable? I mean, I have an Galaxy tab 10.1 so I'm kinda familiar to flashing, but as the newcomer, I'd like to ask is there any difficulty flashing this thing, anything I should be aware of before bricking it?
Thanks in advance guys! All advice is greatly appreciated!
Yes, it very easy to flash Note

It's very very easy to flash Note..... Just buy it....:good: :highfive:
thanks! Well, done a little reading today. And I got something about the "super brick bug" which seems rather dangerous. Anyone cares to elaborate on this for me please?

If you follow the ''HOW TOO's'' then you should not get any brick or issues. I flashed so many Rom- and Kernel's and i never got a brick.
Alwas be on a Safe Kernel. More information is on the General N7000 Forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1347
The previous owner is a 10th grader I tutored, I doubt he knows anything 'bout root or flashing so I think that's not the trouble here. One thing on my mind is that in my country there's still no JB 4.1 OTA yet, at least not until some weeks ago. So, after some basic reading, I got something planned out:
_ Never factory reset while on stock ICS => I should push stock JB through Odin =>safe kernel => push CWM through Odin =>root =>flash some CM goodness
Hell, if stock JB is smooth, I might even stop at rooting.
Basically, that's the right order of this, right?
Somebody better stop me before I mess up something. Haha
Oh, I'm late to the party so what rom can you guys recommend, help me save some time shopping here.

I'd say don't take your chances by going the short way. To be sure you could flash a safe kernel through Odin and then use it's CWM to wipe and flash your stuff. That's what I've done when I got my note and never even got close to the brick bug.
If you really don't understand bullocks of android, just follow carefully the instructions on Dr. Ketans guide thread and you should be fine
Feel free to PM me if you need help

By "bricking", you meant soft brick or boot loop, didn't you? Couldn't imagine a device bricked twice in its life.
Well, let's just presume I'm on stock ICS unroot with unsafe kernel. First I can flash Philz's kernel and CWM (all in one zip file) in stock recovery. That means with that I'm rooted + safe kernel +CWM, then free to factory reset, wipe or flash anything, right?
Couldn't find back which thread says "Never factory reset on stock ICS", I swear I saw it somewhere in these N7000 box.
Oh, and I'm from Vietnam, but I don't understand what my location has anything to do with this, as most Android devices in Vietnam use US firmware.

Yup. That's a safe procedure. It's important you don't wipe anything while you are at your stock kernel. Only after you flashed the safe kernel AND REBOOTED TO THE NEW RECOVERY
