Now listen to this one...
OK, so after a lot of reading and surfing, I finally decided to root my Galaxy Note N7000, using the method described here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv2oGo1_yTQ and I did prepare all and myself mentally for all the variants of the failure.... except for one...
ok. so I download all the software needed on both my English/British Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium laptop and on a XP Home 32-bit laptop, just in case there are some incompatibilities, I'll have it all covered right??? WRRRRROOOONNNNNGGGG!!!
I put the phone in download mode connect it to pc and want to start Odin (1.85 version), but I get "Odin3.ini 000 000" (except the zeroes were square...) small pop-up screen with "ok" in the middle... So, I think "oh, ok, again asking for permission... GRANTED" and I press it and the screen/window of Odin flashes in the third of a second and disappears... I try again.... Same story... on both laptops.... with kies on and off... installed and uninstalled... SGN N7000 connected and disconnected.... same with the downloaded Odin from zedomax's link and from any other link I could find...
What is the problem???!!! Seriously, have you heard of that????
I don't even get to brick my phone, that is how the Android gods hate me!!!
I can't even start Odin programme... (yes, I did Run as Admin)
what is it?
I tried turning off antivirus and firewall... nothing...
Any ideas?
Try these methods :
Download a fresh Odin, maybe yours is corruptEd.
After the download extract the entire rar directly into a folder and then run Odin from that folder.
I got a similar error on Odin once when I placed the Odin icon on the desktop.it was a long time ago so I don't remember the error but I couldn't run Odin either.
And for Godssake don't use a 64 bit machine, we've already got enough trouble as it is on regular 32s.
i run 64BIT...and ODIN3 v1.85...it works flawlessly...just remember to run it AS ADMINSITRATOR....
I read somewhere that the odin folder should be placed on the root of c: drive. Works flawlessly on my 64bit win7 machine. I've also set it to run as administrator.
please hit thanks if i helped

i dont agree...i have placed it in F:.....
I bow to you, Masters of Android (or at least Samsdroid)
Hey, guys, you're a golden bunch really!
Turns out the problem wasn't any of the above mentioned meanies, but the fact that I extracted Odin to an Odin folder in My Documents and then copies that file/exe to desktop (I like my start buttons on the "main command frame", which is desktop for me ), and after posting this OP of this thread I went for a cold shower, and an early morning run and thought I'd try the whole thing one more time... This time I didn't put the Odin exe on the desktop, because I expected it to fail again... But, as it turns out, my lack of faith in Odin MADE IT WORK!!!
And, yes, the Note is rooted, and straight away (while luck is still on my side! ) I went for the Galaxy_s unlock and BusyBox apps to sim unlock my phone from the evil claws of UK Vodafone... And it worked as in 1.2.3.-DONE!
Guys, thanks for your effort and time invested in trying to help... I really appreciate it... It is great to know that if one gets stuck there will always be someone who has a solution, or at least will to find it through co-operation...
Now, find some good, useful apps, nice launcher (maybe tweak Touchwiz, if possible), good battery app, and research which ICS custom ROM based on a stable kernel is "da best"...
Glad it worked in the end. Check out paranoid android for a great and safe ics experience (based on cm9)

Hey there, i am feeling somewhat overwhelmed with all of the advice going on out there and need someone who can give me the answer to my specific problem hardware wise without breaking a sweat...
I flashed a froyo 2.2 rom onto my phone a while ago, recently all of my apps stopped working, and i could no longer install any apps.
Couple days ago i tried openning gmail and the screen went black and gave me the bzzzzzz...............................bzzz...bzzz...
vibrating error that you usually get when an app crashes.
Now the phone continues doing that even when booted up and stuff
It starts right after the S screen and repeats until the battery is removed.
My phone can't get into download or reset mode using the 3 button method so i bought a jig off of ebay, works like a charm.
however NOW, i cannot get the computer to see the phone; both when it is on and attached and in download mode and attached. Odin can't see it, neither can Kies.
If i can get either to see it, i can look up the flashing process to make sure everything is right.... but as of yet nothing i am doing is making a difference.
Thanks for any help
Ok, I'd focus on odin so disable Kies (in task manager processes - all the kies processes).
Then I would 1) reinstall the drivers (standalone ones) 2) Have a few versions of odin to try (like 1.3, 1.7 and ez odin) 3) Clean your usb port on the phone (and computer maybe too - whats the harm?).
Usually if you are sure the drivers are Ok then you should be able to odin working with a nice clean port. They are more sensitive to dirt/moisture or whatever than they should be.
Try that and let us know...
BTW Some people think that the order is important but I've never noticed that. I always have odin open and then connect it but cant hurt to try the other way around too.
Hey thanks alot,
I am at work right now but i am optimistic about trying that out lol.
Just so i know for when the time comes and if Odin works, what files do i need to flash it? .pit, .tar and anything else specific for Bell Canada?
I only ask because you are with Bell so it is probably a very simple answer for you. Otherwise I am sure i can find it elsewhere.
Thanks,
I'll keep you updated
Josh
Download the complete jl2 rom from link I posted yesterday (search my posts) with repartition ticked, then flash the kc1 rom from stock rom link on xda or at samfirmware.com and flash without repartition if you want the latest. You could just try the kc1 step but I you need to repartition.

Hey man,
my phone has never been sent in for repairs or replaced...
I was reading one of your other posts and you advised another member to send it in and maybe they will replace/update hardware?
I have still had my phone for less than a year so sending it in will be no problem at all...
Should i flash to the latest myself or return to stock and send it in?
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks
Well he knows his is broken as he can see that his internal memory reads 0 (which means its cooked - ask me how I know...) and he was trying to fix it in a round about way. Or there was the guy who flashed a captivate rom - that was just a big no-no.
You might just have a corrupt partition or some other corruption in the file system. I seem to get that all the time and its a pain but very fixable .
Alright, sooo
-uninstall Kies
-install drivers only
-try to connect to Odin
-If succesful flash with Odin
-dance with joy
Got it, I will update you later when i get home.
Thanks
installed drivers on my work computer (32 bit windows xp) and nothing... I've tried phone off, phone on, phone in d/l mode... It doesn't pick up anything...
I can try it on my Windows 7 comp at home and see if that works but i'm wondering what the worst case scenario is just bringing into Bell and having them fix it... Am i looking at charges, warranty voiding, etc.. etc... to have it fixed or could i BS my way out of it?
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
pretty sure i flashed the wrong firmware on my phone, when it boots up it says GT-I9000 not GT-I9000M.
It worked fine for like 6 months so i never questioned it... damn damn damn
Not to be completely devious but i got an extended warranty that replaces the phone due to water damage, theft, etc. etc...
If there is no other way should i take advantage of that?
I would hate to jump to one of those actions but i am somewhat panicking becuase i made a super-noob mistake and effed up my phone....
I9000 firmware is completely compatible. The text you see is from the kernel which are always for i9000 unless you have one of the three bell firmwares. So that's not the issue.

I would keep trying. I have gotten warranty before and I was in the same predicament as you almost except I knew that the internal memory was dead. But that was also around the time when most of the I9000M models were dying. They might be checking more now.
If you get odin to flash a stock rom then you can go for it but by then you should be able to fix it.

Alright i will keep trying.
As far as the firmware goes, my gf and i both have the same phone, but she kept heres official and i put custom roms on mine (just the 2.2 because it wasn't available)
We are both on bell canada so i asked her to boot up her phone and the beginning message on hers says GT-I9000M so it freaked me out lol
I will try on my home computer,
keep your fingers crossed for me
Alright, so Odin can now see my phone (it was the damn cord, my Win 7 comp couldnt see it but my xp work laptop can)
Which firmware would you recomend flashing? Stock gingerbread or a slight variation?
I am at work right now so i can wait a bit for a good response. It'd really help me out if you could provide links and tips to the best firmware out right now (i have no problem flashing a custom ROM if it is good).
Thanks alot,
Josh
Succesfully Flashes Gingerbread 2.3.4
Thanks for all your help!!!
how did you manage to see it in odin?
i have te same problem with restarting just after first screen (after flashing to gingerbread) but i cant see it in odin so i cant flash it again?
when i connect it when turned off, a small icon appears with usb connected sound but its still not visible.
Is it maybe my win7?
help, anyone please
Did you start in Download mod? Did you kill the Kies processes in you Win7 task manager ?
If yes, sometimes Windows takes time to install the drivers (be sure ton be connected to the internet), you should also close and relaunch Odin.
i launched download mode with sdk, and now i cant start it.
i went to another pc with xp. it installs drivers but odin cant recognize it.
Well i did it on my work XP computer becuase WIN 7 wasn't recognizing it. But it turns out the whole time the cable i was using would connect to charge, but not act as a pc connection.
I've rooted several times... But i gave my old Galaxy note to my bro and it had an older rom, so it was easy enough to zergrush root it.
Anyway, my new Galaxy note has La6, which i understand can't be rooted, unless I downgrade.
So I downloaded some older Stock ROM's from Dr.Ketan's thread, but it won't, for the life of me be recognised by Odin. I try to unzip it and it comes up saying its not a proper file extension or something, i try moving the .tar file inside and an error comes up. It's not a bouched download either, as this has hap[pened with other older roms ive installed recently..
Can anyone help?
Have you tried taking back your old Note from your bro and giving him the new Note? Let him worry about rooting!
Na the new one is sexy and white.. just isnt liking odin!
Have you tried re-installing the Samsung drivers on your pc? Just a thought.
When I moved from Dell Streak 5 to Note, I spent about 2 hrs trying to get the pc to see the Note. I finally tried deleting the Dell drivers and re-installing the Samsung drivers and it worked immediately. Last night I plugged the Dell into the pc at the same time as the Note. Unplugged them both when I was through. Tried to reconnect the Note later and the pc didn't see it until I re-booted the pc. All good after that.
I don't know enough to offer any better help. Hope this works for you.
kraz
unfortunately its all recognised mate.
the issue is odin doesnt recognise the .tar files and so i cant load it to pda..

go to 2. I dont have direct Rootable ROM
Before ppl start asking me, this is what happened. I gave my Cappy to my daughter and after months of running Dlev Rom, I decided to upgrade to ICS. She was not happy with the rom and wanted to go back to gingerbread. I tried downgrading via recovery but had issues with the downgrade. Long story short....ignorant me, I used Odin and end it up with eclair.
Now here is where the problem started. The phone was succesfully flashed with eclair but button combo wasnt working at all. So, I rooted first and then with adb, I adb reboot download, then once in download, I flashed ginger bootloaders and thats how i end it up with the infamous phone /!\ comp. soft brick. Since originally i had no button combo working, I cant get into download mode. My comp just wont recognize the Cappy.
I have searched for hours and tried all ways possible to get into DL mode but "nada"! Even with Odin opened or heimdall, batt out, batt in, all combinations of buttons...nada (nothing), no luck. Also tried the program by Adam to unbrick the Cappy (that I've found searching) but still nada! I have windows 7 with java and that program by Adam just wont work on my comp.
Can someone try to help me on what can I do without sending my daughter's Cappy to a shop...lol?
Edit: In this post I explain what got "me" out of the softbrick after 2 days of trying! It might not work for who ever falls in a similar situation and even mayb is not a proper way of doing things, but it worked on my end!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26305016&postcount=23
You can use that screen as a download mode.
Remove Java. And then go download Java JRE.
Java JRE 32 bit
Java JRE 64 bit
Try going and grabbing the Heimdall KK4 1 click. Or you could try any of the Gingerbread Heimdall packages in the OneClick Master Collection
I think you'll be fine to run Heimdall after the Java reinstall.

Try this:
Take out battery
Plug in usb cable
Hold volume+ and volume-
Pop in battery
This should take you straight into download mode. Just have to flash a new ROM/Stock Image

The [Phone /!\ Computer] screen is another method of Download Mode. You should still get Odin to recognize the phone. If Odin recognizes the phone, you should flash KI2 from This thread, since it has CWM injected. Once you have CWM, you have a clean slate to install any ROM you desire.
If Odin does NOT recognize you phone no matter which USB port you connect the phone to (as it happened to me once), you could try what I did. I downloaded Windows installer for Ubuntu Desktop, and that got me Linux. Once I had Linux, flashed KB2 from the ROM thread linked above. Why Linux? Because I never got Heimdall to work on Windows, but I did on Linux. After my phone was completely stock, I followed the instructions on TRusello's Guide to Flashing ANY ROM to get my phone set up the way I wanted.
I'm sure there are faster ways than the one I just gave you, but I can vouch that my method works, and you might get your phone sorted out while you wait for a better response. Good luck!
That will teach me to edit my post without refreshing first!

Short and sweet...i installed ubuntu last night on my pc and I thought i lost windows. Did some search and I can choose when my pc start up either W7 or ubuntu. Went to bed at 4am trying to install java to ubuntu with no luck. To b honest, i'm about to quit trying to get this phone in DL mode. My daughter hates me and my husband told me, u messed it up...u fix it! Agh!!!!! I'm trying again but if I cant get it to work I rather just buy my kid a new phone....and thats a shame because that Cappy has been a warrior!

Did device manager not recognize it or Odin/Heimdall not recognize it? I know my system wouldn't show it was connected but Odin/Heimdall still would.

Neither one recognize the device. With Odin you're supposse to see the yellow light meaning its connected...but nothing, and with heimdall clearly says disconected. I am sooo exausted looking for an answer as to what to do to get this phone on DL mode! I've used both programs in the past but the phone just dont want to come alive!
I understand how frustrating it can be to get a phone to respond.
I went back to your first post to make sure I didn't miss anything and I realized what the issue might be. Since the phone was upgraded to ICS it wouldn't be using the standard captivate drivers any more.
Let's try this:
Download and install the Android SDK
Add the Google USB Driver
Try ODIN/Heimdall again.
I think I had a similar issue when I was reverting a phone from CM7 back to Stock captivate.

Well...thank you! Don't know if i should keep DLing stuff to my pc. Now I have ubuntu, sdk manager, hemidall, dont know how many odins, etc. My husband just ask me for a new pc because he tried to uninstall ubuntu and he was unsuccesfull at it. Now this softbrick is gonna cause me some major issues family wise. This really sucks! But hey, me been a female, I just learned that nothing is impossible for us. If my hubbie dont wanna help me...I'll get it done one way or another. I will see my daughter smile....believe that!!!!!
Thank you!
I have a 2.5 year old daughter and would do anything to see her smile.
Here is a guy here on XDA who makes the jigs. However, I still believe you just have a driver issue. At this point I can only say to take off all the drivers, odin, and heimdall and start fresh.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=500006
I used his kindle fire cable and it was great.
Hey XDA, it's been a while. I tried to flash stock JF6 on my cappy last night and things went to hell.
The phone now only starts up for a forced download mode (inserting battery while holding volume buttons). When attached to Odin3-One-Click, it can begin the reset but crashes to a solid grey/pink/red screen when installing factoryfs.rfs, and then refuses to start up again for a couple of minutes. The previous ROM was cognition 4, I believe, alongside the CogKernel. I'm working with Windows 7 x64, which I understand can cause problems, but I don't really have a choice here.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Samsung drivers from the official Odin3 thread, restarting between each step. I've tried changing USB ports. I've also tried to flash with Heimdall, but it only sees the device as "Gadget Serial" and can't work with it.
What do I try next? When the phone comes back to life I'll be trying Odin with compatibility mode, but I don't know what else to do. Please save me!
Are you flashing with or without bootloaders? If without, try flashing a stock rom with them.
Also, look in my signature for the "Captivate Connection Issues" thread. That has some additional things you might be able to try.

Ok, my question then would be - Bootloaders or no bootloaders? (I'm assuming I should go with bootloaders unless told otherwise)
EDIT: Bigger problem - the phone is taking longer and longer to recover from crashes. Last time I only waited a matter of minutes before it could get back to download mode, this time I've waited 20 and it still hasn't fixed itself.
U may have some hardware issues then.
But if it gets going u will need the GB Bootloaders in order to run GB.

Damn, it's really unresponsive now. 50 minutes wasn't enough this time. I'm getting worried, I can't remember how many tries it took last night, and I really need my phone back. A failed flash during the transfer of factoryfs.rfs shouldn't hardbrick anything, should it?
Nope. That should not at all. Just a failure during the boot.bin and/or sbl.bin would cause a hard brick...or mismatched bootloaders between froyo and gb.
Which specific Odin3 one click did u use ?? Gotta link to it or the thread ??
BTW I haven't even tried GB yet. I'm still waiting for it to "cool down" from the last crash. I don't know why it's doing this now, since I had it in download mode an hour and a half ago and didn't crash it or anything.

I don't think it's the battery, though just before I flashed I had a 0% battery level erroneously detected.
UPDATE: The device is starting again, but now it only shows up in windows as "unknown device" and windows reports that it's malfunctioning. I'm restarting now.
Sorry for the double post, I think this is relevant though.
Now that the phone powers on to the download screen, I can plug it in to the computer but now receive an "Unknown Device!" error. Honestly this is just ridiculous, especially since I had no trouble transferring some of the Odin files. I'm downloading Puppy Linux now to see if Heimdall will pull me out of this.
UPDATE: The first time I started Heimdall on Linux it was able to detect the phone, but failed after the LOKE handshake part. Now it no longer sees the phone. I'm beginning to think there's something wrong with the USB port, even though it worked fine for file transfers just 2 days ago.
UPDATE 2: Good news everyone! The same linux install on a different laptop was able to see the device, and Heimdall could get all the way to "rebooting device" using the cyanogenmod kernel. However, the CM package doesn't seem to include bootloaders, so I can't actually start up the phone after downloading. I just realized that 4-2 also linked to Heimdall compatible bootloaders, so I'll be trying those now.

UPDATE 3: It turned out the problem was with the first laptop's USB setup. Every port is attached to an internal replicator, which I believe was the problem. I hooked it up to an old Toshiba and the Heimdall version of UCKK4 installed flawlessly. Now I'm running CM9 and it's amazing. Thanks 4-2ndtwin!
Hi all. Thought I'd check if there is a newer method to root the phone on the Mac.
I can't run Odin on a Mac and I don't have enough space to bootcamp into Windows. I've tried Parallels in the past but it didn't work.
I understand Heimdall is not maintained now? I've tried that in the past too but couldn't find the PIT file for my phone anyway
So I've been stuck and now the phone is acting up. So much junk on the stock rom.

I was in the same boat with a new MacBook being my new computer. I ended up boot camping windows 10. I tried to figure out jodin with no success. Maybe someone who has done this recently will chime in. Good luck.
You need to download the heimdall, that is compatible with your operating system. For me, I am on El Capitan, so I downloaded the one from here. Once I installed that, I ran the heimdall frontend app first. I went to the "utilities" tab, connected my phone, and then clicked "detect." Once my phone is detected, I just saved the pit file.
Not for Nothing Folks, You can get a windows computer/laptop very cheap now a days. If you are planning to do a lot of flashing on android phones, nothing beats a cheap windows computer. MicroCenters, Amazon, Ebay, Best Buy have cheap computers that will be able to do what you need for flashing your phones. I know you can do it on a mac ( and some say it is easy or fast), but you have to make sure it is setup correctly or you can do damage to your phone than it is worth. I used to run Mac, and I got tired of trying to get things that run on windows and not on mac, to work correctly. I cant remember the last time i even started my mac book.. LOL
Just something to think about..
****And no reason to argue with me or prove that mac is the best out there, or you will never buy a windows computer. ***
Google and try jodin. It's a Web based java program. Ive successfully flashed my N910T and G900T with it.
