Well i have Droid 3 phone! and i have no chance to flash a custom rom!!
I have rooted the phone i have installed safe strap!
I go into the SS menu and put my phone into Safe Mode... All fine till now!
Then i go to install zip etc.. i choose my zip and it seems to be installing! But the install procedure seems to finish very soon... in under a minute its says completed succesfully...
so i clear dalvik cache user data etc and reboot.. but nothing happens... the phone gets stuck with a black screen and nothing happens... i have to disable Safe Mode so that the phone can boot up in its old state! i have donwgraded the phone to the old sbf but nothings seems to work!
I really do not know why... so any advice would be very helpfull!!!
you are probably using rick#2's modded safestrap 1.08f
use 1.08e or hashcodes 1.08
I don't know if it will fix your issues, but you're supposed to do all the wiping before you flash, not afterwards. You could have wiped system as well when you did those wipes, so it would have completely undone the whole flashing process.

emm NO... actually i^m usng hashcodes 1.08 - official... but i also tried the modded one. but the same results occured!!!
i forgot to mention.. in recovery when i try doing a cwr recovery some kind of error shows up saying that this opperation cant be completed... i dont know if this has s.th. to do with the other issue! and also tried first deleting user data and stuff and than flashing... but no result at all!!!
After you enable “Safe System”, you must then go to the “Mount” menu and choose “Format System". Then Wipe Data & Cache, Install Your Custom Rom, Wipe Data & Cache, and reboot.
If the SKIP the step of going to "Mount" and "Format System", you will get stuck on a black screen upon reboot 100% of the time!
Hope this helps!

these are the steps i follow:
1. Make sure the ROM .zip file is on your SDcard
2. Reboot and access recovery as above.
3. Select Safe System
4. Turn on Safe System (this should take a few minutes as it is copying the userdata to an unused partition)
5. Power off and reboot into recovery (have not verified this is acutally necessary)
6. wipe data (in main menu)
7. wipe cache (in main menu)
8. Select mounts and storage
9. Format /system
10. Back to main menu
11. Select Advanced
12. Wipe Dalvik Cache
13. Main Menu
14. Install zip (your ROM) from SDcard
15. Reboot (should take a good while to boot, up to 5 minutes)

Pretty correct, although wiping data/factory reset isn't always so necessary, but still preferable and you don't have to restart after wiping/factory reset...you can just go back and flash right after!
Also, I would suggest you to do some NAND backups to get back to your old ROM in case you don't like the new one you installed!
So if its not nessasary to wipe/factory why do does it say in each rom thread to wipe?

1. Download rom, put on root of SDCARD.
2. Boot into recovery.
3. Depending on if your switching around roms, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache
4. back to root of recovery
5. select flash file from zip.
6. select name of rom file
7. reboot when finished

If you don't wipe the phone will run Thermonuclear-War.exe
Worst case is a stall at before the boot animation, most common case a boot loop at the animation.

lawl epic answer xD
Yeah well wiping is optional, but highly recommended (especially if you're new to the stuff as danger-rat said)
I wipe when switching ROMs completely, just to make sure I don't fall on bugs. I only wipe dalvik-cache and cache when updating to a new nightly/update of the same ROM.
Some people change ROMs completely and don't wipe and don't have problems, but meh...I don't want to cause useless conflicts!
You generally don't need to wipe between versions of the same rom.
But if i do the wipe data/factory wouldnt it delete the clockwork and nanodroid backup and ill have to flash clockwork again?

No, as long as you don't wipe sdcard...
Anyways, if that's all that worries you, make a copy on the computer of the whole "nandroid" or "clockworkmod" folder on your computer just in case...
Hi Experts,
I recently rooted my phone and installed SuperNexus ROM on it after CWM mode.
I want the Stock JB back on my phone and also unroot the phone. How do I do it ?? Any pointers or help ???
I found this link while browsing..please tell me is it safe to follow this procedure for JB stock rom too.

Yes, it's safe but I advice you to wipe everything before you go stock.
Flash one of philz's kernels for JB(latest I guess), reboot recovery and then wipe everything. My advice is to wipe cache, system, data, preload, dalvik and even emmc. You will ofcourse lose everything on internal card. After that do a full wipe/factory reset(the one which says install new rom).
Then reboot to download mode, press up and flash stock JB firmware via PC Odin just like in the link.
I followed the procedure in the link and its tuck after samsung logo..just keeps reloading again ad again samsung logo..
what do i do now??

Ok, great. Now you will wipe everything.
Go to mount and storage and:
-format cache
-format system
-format data
-format preload
-format emmc(it will delete your entire internal storage, I do it to really delete everytihng, you don't have to do it if you have important data but I advice it)
Then go back and go advanced:
-wipe dalvik
Then go to wipe/factory reset and select the second one(Install new ROM - this will again format everything).
Get back when you're done.
Yes done that ..what to do next

Now go to download mode. You can reboot to download somewhere in the menu. Maybe under advanced, or under Philz settings, just find reboot to download.
When it boots, press up and hook up the phone to your computer.
Run PC Odin and you should see a yellow coloured window that says that device is detected.
Now under PDA select your stock ROM md file. Check "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset time" and nothing else.
After all is setup, click Start and wait to complete.
I am doing that.. just a question was that the boot loop issue of stock ROM?
done with odin device is reloading.
Yes it started after taking a bit long time..
I am configuring it now..
I have few questions about it..
Is my device still rooted? If yes how to unroot it.
Is philz recovery still present?
everytime I flash a ROM I will have to wipe everything?

You are not rooted anymore and you have a stock recovery, everything is stock. You don't have to wipe everything when you flash a new
ROM, but it is very adviced, also it depends on the ROM you are flashing.
The bootloop probaly occured becouse you were coming from an AOSP based ROM and probably didn't wipe anything.

Not seeing your sim card has nothing to do with root.
Is your sim card activated? If yes, is it for the same carrier your phone came from? If not, is the phone unlocked?
If it's not unlocked and you're using a sim card from a different carrier than the one who's attached to the phone, you'll have to unlock it. There are guides in here on how to do it, that being said, you could also pay a small fee to get the unlock code.

All the information you need about Captivate is here on XDA. Just use Search and read. You don't provide any information about your phone. What ROM you are trying to root? What carrier you are currently using? What SIM card is not working? Is the phone unlocked? Is IMEI number correct after flashing custom ROM? What Android 4 ROM you have installed, etc.? How exactly you expect us to help you!?

Quickie guide to installing ROMs.
1. Grab the desired ROM of choice. Cyanogenmod 10/Slimbean is a good start
2. Get the gapps for the ROM. http://goo.im/gapps/.
3. Get cyanogenmod7 from http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=captivatemtd
4. Get CWM here: http://www.semaphore.gr/kernels/Semaphore_2.5.0c.tar
5. Heimdall here: http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/. You don't need to install anything extra with 1.3.1
6. Copy the gapps, CM7 and your ROM of choice into the internal AND external SD card. Some rom comes with a kernel that don't play nice with either SD card, so both is better.
Install
7. Extract Heimdall, go into the driver folder, open Zadig.exe
8. Pull the battery of the phone, put it back in. Hold Volume Up + Volume Down and plug in the USB cable
9. Once Windows detect your phone, click on option -> List all device. Look for Gadget Serial Control, Samsung Composite Device or similar. If it look like your mouse/keyboard/webcam/other internal component, don't touch it. Click on Replace Driver, and wait for it to install.
10. Go back into the heimdall folder, hold shift, right click the folder and select open command prompt here.
11. Using 7zip/WinRAR, copy the content of the Semaphore_2.5.0c.tar file to the heimdall folder.
12. On the Command prompt, type:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
13. Once your phone reboots, it should bootloop. No problem. Pull the battery, put it back in, hold volume up + volume down and press power until it turns on. You may need to do this a few time. It should boot into recovery mode.
14. Select install zip file from SD card -> Choose from Sd card -> the Cyanogenmod 7 file. Confirm with yes
15. It should reboot automatically, and bootloop. Do the pull battery trick from 13 to get back into recovery mode. Do 14 again. This time it shouldn't bootloop.
16. Go back to the main menu - Wipe Data/Factory Reset -> Reboot
17. Wait for it to boot.
18. Go back into recovery mode, and Wipe data/factory reset again. Install the ROM of your choice, along with the gapps. Newer ROM should ask you to flash it again to confirm. Do it.
19. After flashing, wipe data/factory reset again, before rebooting
20. Enjoy

Step 19, do NOT factory reset after flashing your ROM. Cache and dalvik should be wiped prior to flashing the ROM and gapps. Reboot after and let it rebuild it's dalvik. Finally, step 20.

Depends on your recovery really, factory reset usually wipes the ROM (or at least used to back when I used cwm). Whether it still does or not though, it's repetitive and unnecessary.
Edit: ok just made sure. It's actually just unnecessary.

hi guys, i know it's kind of rude to register and the first post to be asking for help but like i said i am kind of stuck...
i tryed a guide from androidlegend website (would post the link but i am a new user so i can't) to flash CM 10.2 to my 4x
i rooted it succesfully, and came all the way to 3 steps before succes but got stuck on the part where it says:
"Select wipe data/factory reset & subsequently wipe cache partition to wipe the data & caches respectively from the phone memory. Wiping cache partition is not necessary though, since Wiping data / factory resetting phone itself wipes many partitions but still it’s recommended"
i've done that and on the next step it says Now select install zip from sdcard & then on next screen select choose zip from sdcard. It will list all the files & folders located on internal / external storage of your device (depending upon the option you’ve chosen). Navigate to the ROM file that you’ve copied earlier , select it using power button (unless you’re using touch recovery) & confirm the installation by pressing on ‘Yes – Install ____’. This would start the installation process.
but i don't see these options all i have is:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
wipe data/factaroy reset
wipe cache partition
wipe nv partition
toggle console part log
any ideas what i might be missing?

it was a guide for the 4 x...
now i don't understand your question?
you need to unlock the bootloader, root it, then flash a custom recovery before you can flash .zip files
Hi guys,
Need your assistance in this. I downloaded the 4.4.2, the Gapps (stock version), and the CWM Touch 6044. Flashed successfully the 6044. Rebooted, and flashed omni 442 and then the gapps. Did a wipe data/factory reset. Then pressed reboot device. The phone will restart and stay stuck at the Omni Logo. No progress from there at all. Did a few other reboots and different combinations to the above but to no result. Stuck there. Finally, did a restore from my backup just to have a phone again..Any idea what I did wrong from the start?
How long did you wait at the first bootup? It took quite long for me, so I'd suggest waiting up to 20 minutes before turning off the phone. Try flashing with the most lightweight Gapps package, that's what everyone seems to be using. You could also try wiping cache and dalvik cache.

Well, did the Dalvik cache but later on, when I was experimenting. I had waited at least 16/18 minutes till my patience ran out...
Decided to have one more go right now. 1. Did a wipe data / factory reset. 2. After that, wiped Dalvik cache. 3. Presently installing Omni and then will install gapps. 4. Will reboot and leave it to boot until I leave work. (couple of hours from now). And will see what happens.
- Forgot to add thaty in all instances, I selected YES in the "root" question in the end. -
Thanks for replying!
---Update
Nothing changed. Stuck at the Omni logo for about 50 minutes..

So don't flash gapps and ROM back to back. Flash ROM then reboot and after waiting 5 mins reboot and flash gapps again.

Maybe format /system in addition to the factory reset (it's under mounts and storage). So you get a completely clean install

Thanks for your advice guys - Unfortunately I don't see any results
I booted in recovery and in this order: Wiped data / did factory reset - then wiped Dalvik - then did format /system - then flashed successfully Omnirom and at the end select YES in the "root" question. Did not touch the Gapps.
Same result - has been in the Omni Logo for more than half an hour.
Can someone tell me the absolute prerequisites needed to install and boot normally? Apart from CWM Touch 6.0.4.4 that is?
Thanks in advance
I really don't see any more required steps to install OmniRom. Did you try another downloaded OmniRom? Maybe something is wrong with your used version.

That shouldn't do any damage (I tried both ways and didn't notice any difference )
I really think your downloaded ROM zip is corrupt as nobody else having problems with it

all I did under mount & storage is the "format /system". Did not mount anything any other time. Is this part of the procedure too or are we shooting blind here? - Cause directions in the post say flash rom, flash apps, wipe data & reboot, let alone the 15 other combos I've done.
Haven't tried anything yet cause I need to re-download the ROM and presently I can't get any of my 3 PCs "see" the LG's contents like a flash drive. Can only do it in my work's laptop. Beats me why..
If you don't have important data, format internal storage too. No idea for 4.4, but if you flash kdz, this is a must.

It is important to mount everything as far as I know. In my old device's forum it always a step that is specified, I never see it in these forums though.
Try it, you don't loose anything.
