[Q] Deep sleep issues G.Note N7000 - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Phone: Galaxy Note N7000 Blue/Black version
Does anyone know wat's causing my phone to not be able to go into deep sleep mode?
I already made sure not to pull the charger while it's screen off.
I have betterbatterystats installed.
what should i set to see what's causing it all; kernel wakelocks, partial wakelocks, processes, alarms?
and under settings, wakelock percent of time of what; time on batt, time awake, time awake minus time with screen on?

They say pull your charger out when your screen is on and unlocked...not when its off. I would also recommend restarting phone that usually helps. If that doesnt help. Turn on airplane mode, turn off phone, remove battery for 20 secs or whatever, then put battery back in, restart phone, turn off airplane. That usually gets you back to deep sleep but the issue will come back. At least that is what I experience in ICS.

what i said, I already made sure not to pull the charger while it's screen off.
what you thought i said, i already made sure to pull the charger while it's screen off.
restarting the phone helps but i have to do it everytime it doesnt go into deep sleep mode.? i've tried the other method you mentioned already too. does anyone know wat's the process multi_pdp and l2_hsic?

sorry for the mistake.
This is what I have now done after having bad battery issues.
1) Rooted phone using Dr. Ketans method.
2) changed kernel to Abyss thru CWM
3) wiped cache/davlik/etc thru Abyss
4) installed Criskelo v7
5) changed kernel to SpeedMods latest.
phone has been going for 24hrs with still 25% left in the tank. GPS Google maps for an hour or so. Texts...basically all the stuff I was doing before on stock except the difference is I didnt need to charge it once like I would have already needed to do.
Not sure if you are into all the stuff that I did but it has made a gigantic difference.

does anyone here in the forums who can work well around the problem if i were to post screenshots from my phone's betterbatterystats app??

[Q] Deep sleep issue in CM 6.3.2

Hi there,
i have a problem with my milestone and cyanogenmod 6.3.2 (and the same in earlier versions of this rom).
After flashing the rom, deep sleep works for a few hours, and after that, without doing anything special, my phone doesnt go to deep sleep at all.
When i take a look at the battery stats, there is "running" with 100 percent, and partial wake usage is fully accounted to "android system".
I tried to restart after charging the phone, but it doesnt help. With stock rom, i have normal deep sleep accounting for about 80 percent of usage time.
Anyone has an idea how to fix it?

What app you used to see this "battery stats"? If you have a SS or a LOG it would help us to help you.
it's the built-in battery history that can be accessed via spare-parts. i dont know if and where this is logged somewhere as a file.
more information to deep sleep problem

After updating to 6.3.3 I figured out that deepsleep worked until the first reboot. I also noticed that, after restoring 6.3.2 with nandroid, deepsleep also worked before I rebooted for the first time.
Anyone has the same problem or any suggestions (except 'dont ever reboot')?
I had the same issue on 6.3.2. After upgrading to 6.3.3 and playing with wifi settings the deep sleep started to work. One more thing I did was going into sleep mode with CMMod extended button (Zzz on notification bar)

thanks for your response. can you tell me what exactly you did with wifi settings? i also tried going to sleep mode with Zzz button in notification bar, but it doesnt work (screen turns black, but cpu runs at 250 mhz, and no deep sleep).

I had this issue too.
If (and only if) you're rooted and know how to use it... try setCPU. Recommended settings and ondemand + set on boot.. gonna try this for a few days and post the results

I had that problem initially and I *think* it was related to having WiFi enabled even while the phone was supposed to be asleep. Have a look at this thread for a few ideas which may (or may not) help....

Sorr to double my post, but...
So, I found the problem.
This is kernel wakelock, wlan_rx_wake.
Many people also suffered from this problem on Nexus.
The issue directly related to Dynamic IP/DHCP on your network. Due to kernel fault, wi-fi module can'to go into deep sleep, and therefore drains the battery. Not much, but about 2-3% per hour.
Goddamn Samsung devs.
So

Try the instructions below, fixed my deep sleep problem(thanks to Mister Jozo)
0.go to settings > sound and turn off touch sounds and screen lock sounds
These steps stop the kernel wakelock 100% problem:
1.turn on aeroplane mode
2.turn off device
3.take out battery for 10 seconds
4.turn on device
5.wait for everything to load
6.turn off aeroplane mode

Hmmm i dont have any kernel wakelock, deep sleep works how it should. Maybe you have installed any app which gives that wakelock

I don't know...very same set of apps, as it was on lp5 and lp6 repacks, and there the battery life was significantly better, than now. There is deep sleep, just in "kernel-wakelock" I'm seeing this wi-fi issue. And it not happens on mobile network.

that worked perfectly for me!!! Many thanks!!!
Left my WiFi and Latitude/Maps running and apps and FB updating over night..
100% charge.
7 hours 38Min 85% remaining
Running odex stock rooted German LPY ROM. Flashed from mobile Odin Pro with injected SU and everrott and ALL wipes checked.
By some standards this may be poor. I am extremely happy with these results given I run everything all the time. I usually am charging every night. I decided to leave it off charge last night to see if I had excessive drain.

the solution posted by OP worked for me thanks!!
I seem to have a problem with the calendar storage... whatever that means. Restarting, taking battery out etc. didn't help. And the problem is that the phone is getting hot too. Any suggestions please?

I seem to have a problem with the alarm amanger not letting mine go into deep sleep.
3545 wakelocks over a 2 hour period!!!
I have 2 daily alarms set in the stock clock.
Surely this shouldn't be preventing the phone from sleeping?
Or is it related to some other app?
Well one of the things i've noticed is that while charging my phone never goes to deep sleep, it remains on 200mHz. If i take it off the charger it will go to deep sleep.
I've read about a similar problem with the original samsung car holder /charger. As it seems while charging in landscape mode and receiving a call gives a problem. Without the charger all seems to be fine.
In my opinion i think it's rom related (wow, did figure it out myself) but i think it's also related with the usb port. Try it and you will see....
Hope this helps someone.

[Q] problem of 4.0.3 ROM German version, unrooted

I have encountered a problem and need some help pls...
I recently flashed to 4.0.3 official rom German version (not leaked version), unrooted. I downloaded the firmware from samsung-updates.com, upgraded the phone, everything worked fine.
However, i found out recently that sometime if i left phone idle, the battery drains really quickly. say if i charged it up to 100% and left it over night, next morning, it will only have 60% left.
firstly, i went to Settings, then Battery, i found out even when the screen is OFF, the is still keep on "awake" -ing, i then downloaded CPU spy, i can see that when the battery drains quickly, CPU was constantly operating in 200MHz, something must be running in the background all the time.
I also downloaded betterbatterystatus, i have checked the wakelocks, everything worked fine.
I wonder if any of you guys have the same problem.
This does not happen often, and i believe restart the phone can "cure" it temporarily, but it will come back you dont know when...
btw, i have turned off google+ services.
please help and excuse my English.
Thanks
bump
You have Wifi on? Or added a new app recently? I usually reboot my phone when I install a new app since last time I installed a new app there was battery drain issue.
This helped making my phone deep sleep and decreasing battery drain

I had the same issue and solved it by doing the following steps:
1. Allow a charge to 100% to occur
2. Before you unplug the charger, unlock your phone to the homescreen
3. Restart your phone
After doing this, I noticed my phone goes into deep sleep and my battery lasts longer throughout a day.

Mine did that, but I did the charge up, airplane mode, shutdown trick and it
fixed it.
Got a friend on an older galaxy captive, he finally got around to upgrading to GB,
and his was rooted before the update and he forgot to unroot before the update.
After the update, part of the old root program was running all the time sucking his battery down. After he figured out a way to get rid of it, the problem with battery drain stopped.
If the charge, airplane, shutdown trick doesn't work, download something like CPU Spy and see what's taking up the battery. Could be something left over from GB still running.

This was fixed after following the above steps.

Phone call going a-wall

Hello,
Ive been really annoyed at something my Cappy has been doing lately. I recently installed Helly Bean and have been flabbergasted at how fast this thing moves. I am BLOWN away with how beautiful this OS is on my phone! However, whenever I make a phone call and go to take my head away from the phone it for some reasons goes either idle, or completely dead. I cant power up the device in any fashion without a battery pull. The phone is as if it is dead and then starts right up after the battery is replaced back in. I have the Devil kernel installed so I was thinking that perhaps the kernel might be up to something. I have had issues with the Idle before on my cappy. Deep idle isnt working... if the phone sits for five minutes with the screen off its goes idle to the point where it wont turn on without a battery pull. Could someone PLEASE help me. It would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have deep idle enabled in your settings? I did that once by accident and a battery pull was the only solution. If so, try disabling that.
Hm.

No deep sleep -> how to identify the cause?

Hey guys --
I did a search and while there is much discussion of deep sleep problems, there is no clear way I could easily find to identify the cause.
I have CM7.20, the MiRaGe latest build on my NC, with the settings listed in my thread (see the sig). Recently I noticed that it is not entering into deep sleep, indicated by losing ~20% battery while it is asleep overnight in about 8 hrs. Battery results tell me it's "WiFi" taking like 30% of the battery, which seems quite odd, since I had it set to turn off WiFi while the screen off unless connected to the charger.
Any clues on how to identify the problem with deep sleep?
As for usage, I am using my NC 99% of the time with the following apps:
Moon+ Reader (probably 70% of time)
YouVersion Bible app (most of the rest of the time)
Dolphin Browser HD (maybe 2% of the time)
Enhanced Email and MailDroid - very occasionally but they are checking mail on 15 min intervals when wifi is on.
I have a ton of other apps installed but I almost never use them except for these.
Any help on how to determine what is causing the NC to not go into deep sleep will be immensely helpful. I have a 2-week Euro business trip coming up next month and I would really like to solve this before then.
Thanks!
Better Battery Stats might help. Try turning off sync before bed and see if you still lose 20%. If so, it's definitely some app that's the culprit. Grab something that will tell you what program is using data and how much/how often and you should be able to isolate it pretty quick.

OK, but it should be turning off wifi, and therefore sync for ALL apps, when it is asleep. Can an app override this setting? That's my guess, is some app is doing this. How can I ID that?

Like envygreen said use that app to track wakelocks. Even if wifi is off, some app may be applying a wakelock to try to sync.

Alright, I'm on it
So last night I finished charging it and read for a couple of minutes, then put it to sleep to see how it went overnight.
My Wi-Fi sleep policy is set to turn off wifi when the display is off.
When I got up this morning I checked it and it had lost over 10% battery over night, and I checked BetterBatteryStats and I think it is going into deep sleep but maybe not shutting off wifi.
I have attached the screenshots from BetterBatteryStats, and I think I need help interpreting them and finding the cause.
ok, so here I am replying to my own thread... If I am reading this right it seems to be looking like my wifi is on the entire time, not only when the screen is on. Is this the right way to read this? In this case, it looks like "Wi-Fi sleep policy" being set to "When screen turns off" is not actually working... right?

It sure looks that way to me too. It says wifi on 8 hours. Did you try toggling the setting a few times? Also you are on Mirage and he may have done something in his tinkering that messed that setting up.

yeah I did toggle the setting on and off, and in fact before I had it set to "On during sleep if plugged" for a long time, recently changed it, thinking maybe this was the cause.
But it does appear that maybe this is what is killing the battery. There doesn't appear to be any network activity when the screen is off, just looks like the wifi radio is powered up.
Any advice?

Hmm. that seems like an extreme step, but maybe ... wonder how much of the snappiness I will lose.
EDIT: OK I switched to CM7.2 stable. Nice I didn't seem to lose any settings. Let's see how it goes. Thanks for the advice, I'll report back here if it still does the same thing.
Also uninstalled beautiful widgets... figured maybe that could be causing an issue.
Oh, and I probably had a SOD kernel patch applied... perhaps that was the problem too
guess I should change only one variable at a time for a good test, but in reality I just want to get it fixed and not really diagnose it.
I was having a similar problem...what I did was run the V6 supercharger script, granted i am running CM9 atm but it took care of any problems I had with battery life and wifi signal.
Question: does having WiFi on keep the phone from going into deep sleep at all?
I have found that my phone is not going into deep sleep. I checked what is holding wake locks, and the time with wake locks is way less than the time the phone has the screen off, so it appears it is not deep sleeping, even though there are not wake locks.
I have an extended battery, so I get good battery life, but always interested in improving it. But I also have this thought that if I have to turn everything off, and only synch when I turn the screen on, that is not ideal either.

Get CpuSpy free on play store. It will tell you exactly how much deep sleep you are getting.
Having wifi on all the time should not prevent deep sleep. Only when things use it does it come out of deep sleep.

I have CPUSpy Free, and that is how I know I am not getting deep sleep. My challenge now is to identify why.
OK, so it seems that CM7.20 stable definitely fixes things. I didn't flash the SOD fix, so maybe the SOD fix was preventing deep sleep before, or maybe something else in the kang build was preventing deep sleep with wifi on when the screen is on.
However the better battery stats still seems to say my wifi is never actually going off. I am not sure I am interpreting the results correctly. It looks like the wifi is on all the time even though it's set to turn off when the screen is off. But I can let the NC sit on my night stand overnight and lose only a couple of % where it was like 10+% before. I still think my problem was due to some app that updated and not the ROM because the problem started weeks after I last updated the ROM.
