Hi
I have a question about charging the phone when I first get it. I wanna maximise the battery life. But usally when I first get the phone, the battery has a bit of charge. I've been told to charge 8hours.
So do i drain the remaining battery and charge 8hours with the power on
or
Do I charge it straight away even though its not low battery for 8hours
Or do I just charge it till the battery is full?
Thanks
drain it completely, than put it on the charger for like 8-12 hours
drain max again
charge it long time again
drain max again
charge it and your done
this will give u the max result of your battery
Thank you very much. I shall try that, Should I Leave it on while charging?
Is it okay to play around with the phone while it is charging?

1; There is no need to do that with current technology batteries.
2; Once the battery reaches 100% it doesnt charge or do anything else.. so useless to leave it in for 8-12 hours.
I second TimMun.
The process of charging the battery for 8 hours is for old batteries...
and i believe even that was a myth.. apparently the concept was that the acid in the battery needs to be charged for a LONG time for maximum efficiency.
I think you are good to go once the new battery shows full charge..
Hmm wonder what was in my study about batterys, well do w/e u like, i know a bettery has a memory which only can be reset by a deadly shock which can be fatal

Last friday purchased HTC Incredible S, since I'm kinda hardcore user of phones (previously had old crap Samsung Tocco Lite - was surfing on internet + listening music, without problem could survive 10-12hrs nonstop use), now when I tried same with Incredible S, it end up that after 2-3 hrs of surfing + some app using for awhile, I ended up at 30-35% from 100%. I did turned all syncs off, brightness to minimums, turned of almost everything and all tasks, so it was just like test for how long surviving it with no internet(wifi/mobile),any sync, any sound/vibration and low brightness - it survived 1 hour longer then before. Like srsly 400£ worth phone with battery what can't hold even 6 hrs?
P.S. first try with apps and such was record for 4 hrs, next test without any apps etc etc survied 5 hrs...
The battery gets better in time.

I see that you have Incredible too, how long your battery lasts when using atleast 2h of app/call/internet usage?
same here, I need to keep charging it. maybe upgrading the kernel and rom helps.

I'm seeing this aswell. The more i use my phone the better the battery gets.
my battery does last 1day 12-15hr. All sync on, mobile networks on, background sync on. Normal use, that is incredible.
well when i first got my IS, the battery life is ridiculously short, from 100% -> 20% in 2 hrs of intense use!
But the battery life is getting better at day 3 (around 5x full charge cycle), do the calibration thing, use till 1%, but make sure phone is not dead, and recharge to 100%, redo for like 5 times.
If battery life still sucks, i think you get a bad battery
My battery lasts 9 hours of intense use (Wifi,3G,Games,Surf net,Listen to music)
Hello
I have installed Battery Monitor Widget Pro to check battery consumption. You can see so which are the applications that drain more your battery, tipically the display.
My battery runs one full day, even one and half with Wifi and BT always ON and normal telephone usage but if I switch on 3G it decrease rapidly and sometimes cannot reach one full day.
So in my case the 3G connection drains a lot.
Stefano
I've had mine since late april and I get a whole day, at least, out of it. Yesterday, I actually went 24 hours without charging it and I still had 30% left. The only "syncs" that are on, are my gmail, weather and Whatsapp. I can definitely confirm it gets better with time!
has anyone ordered from Amazon.Co.Uk, I was wondering if they can refund for phone, so I can take instead HTC Sensation :/
Anyways, I got this phone like 3-4 days ago, now I'm trying to maximally drain it with apps/games to get that battery life up
sense drains your battery...
and also 3g drains it if you have a unstable connection
what i allways do is out of the box, drain it 100%
charge it 100%
drain it 100%
charge it 100% and your done...
might be a ghost story, but surely seems to work for me, however 12hours and mine is empty as fk, with gaming, bad 3g connection, wifi, gtalk etc.etc. aka daily usage..
but thats cuz im running cyanogenmod, which isnt 100% stable yet
Do people not read anything these days? You're complaining about battery life of a smart phone... None of them last longer than a day or two max. Not to mention it's a new toy and you can find yourself on it more often. Checking the battery constantly kills your battery. Tones of widgets kill your battery.

I do understand about 1-2 days of uptime for phone is ok, but mine doesn't survive even 6h +_+ , contacted HTC and they said that battery is fauly.
ANyways... I dont use widgets and actually turned of all sync and stuff like that to prevent battery drain, even in airplane mode, it drains from 40 to 5% (to complete dead) in about 1-2 hrs
I find battery life pretty poor. After charging to 100%, it can be down to 90% within half an hour - without really even using the phone. I can turn on the phone at 7am, and it will be down to between 50 and 40% by 11pm, never normally enough to get through the next day.
I'm going to try some overclocking to see if that helps.

Overclocking will drain even more battery, downgrade better speed of it and it should save battery
I've found that for the first few weeks of having the phone, the battery life will be crap... cause you're generally always messing around with it.
Lately I've been getting two work days out of a charge (6am to ~6pm the next day). I rooted the phone, uninstalled a bunch of bloatware, and set it to underclock when the screen is off (although I'm having issues with that one at the moment).
I'm thinking to buy other phone instead of this (amazon is accepting this for refund/replacement now), so I was thinking if it's worth take Sensation instead of Incredible S?
Are there any disadvantages to having the phone plugged in a frequently as possible (e.g. charging over night, car charging, charging while at work)? I have been favoring 897 leaks over 9000 roms mainly because of battery life. I have been a fan of Apex roms and now that A11 is out I want to give it a try but I know I won't get the same battery life as Illuminance. Could I damage my Captivate from frequent charging?
Now i could be wrong, but frequently charging *may* reduce the life of the battery....i believe every batter has a certain amount of "charging cycles" it can have before the battery begins to lose charge quicker...again, i could be wrong..
True, batteries do have a certain account of charge cycles, but a charge cycle is a 100% drain and back up again.
So down to 50 then charge, 75 charge, 75 charge, is only 1 full cycle.
So whether you wait to charge til it's dead enough to not run the phone (it actually shuts off before true 0% to save the life of the battery) or you grab some spare juice when you can, your battery should have about the same life span.

Ya this is true but I find I that I get much better battery life if I do a bump charge. Ive charged to 100% on the phone screen, turned off the phone, plugged the charger back in, and had it charge for another half hour until it hit 100%. So I dont know what it is about charging in that fashion that works for me but it really seems to help. I also am pretty good about cycling my battery 0-100 100-0 so that may help.

bump charging will kill battery life long term..
Also, be careful with car chargers. Some of them are designed to charge faster which will also shorten the over all life of the battery.
Lithium batteries don't like to be drained fully. The best time to charge is 30-40%. Also lithium doesn't like the "fast" charge. Basically be easy on the drain/charge/level and it will last longer.
The 1/2 hour you're talking about is because the last 5-10% takes the longest. You can actually charge from ~40%-80%+ very shortly due to the way Lithium works.
As I said above, the phone shuts off before the battery reaches 0%. You notice it still has enough power to run the charging animations even though its too dead to boot.
the phone also stops charging at 100% let drain to 95 and back up, to prevent overcharging.
both are to save the lifespan of the battery.
Discharging below three volts will cause damage. Charging over four point two volts will cause damage. Charging at a greater rate than one C will cause damage. One C is equal to the capacity of the cell. Our stockers at 1500mAh should not be charged at a rate greater than one point five amps. I believe the stock charger outputs 800mAh, or point eight amps. Any damage to the cell will definitely shorten life. The more you use a battery the faster it will die, true with any type. Hope this helps someone.

I don't really see this as a matter of choice. My phone dies daily, so I have to charge it daily; I have to bite whatever happens with it anyway. If it helps, I got my phone on launch and have been using the same battery through my warranty replacements. My battery maxes out at roughly 15 hours of moderate use, 20 of light use.
frequent charging reduce battery life so it is better to charge when ur battery is left with 15% or below and charge it completly

This is very true of Lithium ion batteries. They like to be kept topped up constantly. Not letting it go to 0% consantly helps. This is very different from NiMH or NiCd, where the "memory" effect requires you to completely discharge the battery before next charge.
The best way is to just put the phone on charger whenever you are not using it - if ever - just plug it in and let it sit till you use next time.....
FFS how many times must I say it? THE BATTERY NEVER REACHES 0%!!!
There is ALWAYS some amount of charge even when the phone won't come on.

Very true. If you discharge a lithium cell below three volts, you run the risk of it catching fire or exploding.
Should've mentioned earlier that as the battery degrades, it loses capacity. This is what causes them to seem they're not "lasting as long" or "draining faster".

Is my charging routine bad? Here is my daily recharging
I let it charge over night. By the time I get home its normally in the 60% or so. So its left on all night until about 7am.
Then about half way through my day I charge it again while I'm at on my office. By then the phone is around 70%. So I let it charge to 100% then move on with my day.
So about 2 times a day I charge my phone. Is this healthy for the battery or does it not matter? I'm trying to get the most out of my battery. I seem to burn about 3-4% per hour with it just sitting on desk. Thanks for any advice!

Nothing wrong with that
You are charging twice a day though so you will half as many days until your battery dies. Still a couple of years until it reaches 80% capacity though

Well yeah, but don't worry about it. You'll get another phone by the time you notice a battery drop on this phone.
Ideally you should be charging the phone when the battery gets down to around 40% and charge it to almost full, 97%-99%

I've always felt that the less you charge s phone, the better in the end. And once its done charging, unplug it. So don't leave it charging over night. I have a timer set up so my phone charges only for a few hours a night then shuts off. When I wake up, my phone is usually in the 90%+ range

That's simply not true.
Lithium-Ion batteries are designed to be used - not to be used as permanent storage (thats why batteries in always-coorded laptops die faster)
(storing li-ion batteries should be done at 50% charge, never 100% nor 0%... )
Li-ion batteries should never get below 30% and likewise never hit 100% - The reason why, is because you are stressing the battery the most in the extreme ends... an almost empty cell is stressed when it has to deliver .. and an almost full cell has to charge at higher voltage to reach 100%.
So the best thing you could ever do is to charge from 30% to 95% if possible.
Regarding the amount of charges... with Li-ion you shouldn't think about the AMOUNT of charges, but the SUM OF HOURS that your charge..
so lets say you charge 500 times a year and you in total charge for 500x4 hours = 2000 hours of charging..
the battery usually last for 5.000-10.000 hours of charging ..
The reason why it is so, is because charging li-ion burns the Kathode (or Anode, can never remember) -- and when its all burned off, the battery wont charge anymore ...
Discharging too fast, also burns the Kathode (Anode) !!
Everyone is all over the place in this thread. The two things I will tell the OP to do is not leave the phone plugged in over night, and stay away from 100 and 0% and you will be fine.
But even if the OP keeps treating his battery the way he says, it will be okay. Not ideal, but still okay.
I personally try to keep the phone between 30-80%.

you found the right source... its were i get my facts from...
Does the HTC One battery stop charging after it hits 100%? There for no longer having the issue of over charging?
Hey all.. Picked up a Verizon Moto X yesterday and am absolutely loving it. I did have a quick question concerning the battery and am trying to figure out if I need to take this one in and exchange it. Yesterday when I was using the phone out of the box it drained fairly quickly. When the battery hit about 18 percent I got a warning that the battery was getting low... less than 30 seconds later I was getting another warning that the battery was at 13 percent and another 30 second I was at 3 percent battery.. I plugged the phone in, charged it to 100 percent and chalked this up to just a weak charge out of the box.
After the phone was off the charger I played a game of dots, watched about 40 minutes of man of steel and went to bed at 86 percent battery. When I woke up 7 hours later battery had drained to 67 percent. I went about my day and wanted to see how the battery served me at work.
Same thing happened this evening where the battery hit about 18 percent and within a minute I was getting a 3 percent warning. I used the phone for about another four minutes and it died completely.
I'm not really complaining about battery life... All in all I had around 21 hours with 2 and a half hours screen on time. I did notice that Google services had the phone "awake" for almost 20 hours. I'm mostly concerned about the sudden drop in battery and was curious as to if anyone else has experienced it. I'm currently letting the phone charge powered off in hopes that it helps. Thanks in advance guys.

Try doing a battery calibration. Check if there's any app sucking the battery that much.
My Moto X today kept 2h and 30 minutes on 1% battery (i've put it on charge before dying), and took like forever to get from 20% to that.
Maybe you got a defective unit.
No cuz it drops quickly to 1% but just like u that last 1% easily goes for half hour to hour. Idk my actual problem is it'll say 14% left then in 10 minutes 4% left!
Sent from my XT1060 using xda app-developers app
Same here except I have the at&t version
I have the Rogers version and I've had it drop from ~25% to 15% pretty quickly. From 15% to 0 it lasts ok, but it has never stayed on 1 or 2 for very long. I've only gone through 3-4 charge cycles so far. Overall the battery life seems pretty good.
dsuctf which
While mine doesn't drop that quickly, I did go my first day with the phone for 18 hours, and then the next day in pretty much the same conditions it only lasted 11. Going to try again today and see if it does it again.

interesting. mine got to 3% last night and i got "nervous" and plugged it in. has anyone actually killed off the battery yet (shut the phone down)? seems like previous DROID phones would shutdown long before it got to 1%.
had the same issue for weeks. the fix: let phone die completely. then charge phone back up to 100%. I left the phone off while charging (not sure if it is necessary but I did it anyway to ensure that the phones software wasn't causing the phone to charge weird). Once i did this, the phone never dropped from 15 to 1% again and it also doesn't charge from 80% to 100% instantly like it used to.
I ended up taking the phone and exchanging it.. New phone did the same thing.. I let it die completely and charged it overnight while powered off.. Today it was prefect.. Actually have had to try to kill it. Also got my kit kat ota... Absolutely loving this phone. Thanks all!
